BANGALORE : Snowman Logistics announces the launch of Fifth-Party Logistics or 5PL services in India. “We are the first company to introduce this service in the cold chain logistics and supply chain management sector in India,”saidamediareleasefromthecompany.

2M Alliance merges two services, suspends one in Asia to Pacific Northwest trade

As 2M Alliance’s TP1/Maple and TP9/Eagle services have been inconsistent in terms of departure frequency and extended transit times, according to 2M Alliance of Maersk and MSC, the two container giants have decided to merge themintoanupdatedTP1/Mapleline.

The first sailing of the new consolidated TP1/Maple service will be on 28 October and will begin from the port of Xiamenwiththefollowingrotation:

Xiamen (China) – Yantian (China) – Ningbo (China) –Shanghai (China) – Busan (South Korea) – Yokohama (Japan)–Vancouver(Canada)–PrinceRupert(Canada)–Yokohama–Busan.

“This change will remove the current waiting times in Vancouver and allow us to offer stable week-ly departures from Asia, improved environmental efficiency and

competitivetransittimes,”pointedoutthetwopartners.

Meanwhile, 2M Alliance has also decided to suspend its TP7/Lotus service, while Maersk has announced updates in itsTPXservice.

The 4,500 TEU Container ship Maersk Baltimore will be deployed on the first sailing of the new consolidated standalone TPX service with an estimated time of arrival (ETA)atHaiphongporton23October.

The new rotation of TPX service will be Haiphong (Vietnam) – Yantian – Ningbo – Shanghai – Seattle (United States)–LosAngeles(UnitedStates)–Yokohama–Xiamen.

“DuetotheirregulardeparturesofpreviousTP1,TP9and TP7services,theabovechangeswillcauseminimalchangeto ouroverallofferedcapacity,”commentedMaersk.

MSCnotedthatSeattleandUSinlanddestinationsoffered through Seattle will continue to be served by its Chinook service.

The company reports that the need for 5PL services has grown incrementally in the last couple of

years due to the development of e-commerce businesses, the rise in international trade activities, and the increased complexities in supply chain. The post-pandemic rise in the ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook foodcategoriesisalsoamajorreason for the boost in the 5PL service segmentinthissector.

Leveraging this growth, Snowman Logistics now provides distribution and consolidation services, including sourcing on behalf of its customers, in addition to the existing bouquet of 3PL services of transportation and warehousing. In this model, we operate as an integral part of the client’s organisation, develop suppliers, negotiate pricing on behalf of customers, audit manufacturing

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) plans to hold roadshows, car shows, product demonstrations and free product trials for products tagged with Geographical Indications (GI), aspartoftheplan.

"This is a part of a larger plan to explore the export potential of GI products," a Government official said recently.

As of July, 420 products were granted GI registration, of which around 150 GI-tagged products are

agricultural and food products, and almost 240 are handicrafts and handloom.

TheDPIITwantstopromotethese in a focussed manner and an extensive plan is being drawn up on the lines of One-District One-Product scheme to provide much-needed supportfortheirexports.

PM flags high import bill of edible oils and fertilisers

NEW DELHI: Amid a spike in fertiliser subsidy bill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, 17th October called for reducing import dependence in edible oil and

soil nutrients, as imports of these critical items have gone up, pressuring the country’s exchequer aswellastradebalance.

The Government would be

spending as much as Rs 2.5 trillion in fertiliser subsidy this fiscal to protect domesticfarmersfromsoaringglobal prices of the soil nutrients, especially inthewakeoftheUkrainewar.

IR Class expands footprint in South-East Asia with RO authorisation from Philippines maritime flag administration

NEW DELHI : Leading classification society, the Indian RegisterofShipping(IRS),hassigned a Recognised Organisation (RO) agreement with the Philippines maritime flag administration. SeekingROstatusfromkeymaritime flagsispartofIRS’strategytoexpand its presence around the world. An office has been established in Manila which will be followed by deployment ofasurveyoratalaterstage.

Asia Pacific region has been identified as a key region for growth

by IRS and over the years the classification society has strengthened its presence in SouthEast Asia. It has earlier received authorisation as a Recognised Organisation from several maritime flag administrations in the SE Asia region including Malaysia, Thailand, VietnamandMyanmar.

Rupee settlement to raise exports to Russia by $5 bn

NEW DELHI: India’s shipments to sanctions-hit Russia could grow by an additional $5 billion once the rupee settlement mechanism becomes functional, partially offsetting the demand slowdown in key Western economies, according to a study by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations(FIEO).

Thestudyshowsthatfarmproducts, food, drugs and engineering equipment are the key areas where India could see a boost in exports to Russia, with supplies from the European Union nearly coming to a halt, especially for industrial and engineering goods, thereby creating opportunities for India.

“India’s exports to Russia can grow by $5 billion once the rupee settlement mechanismcomesintoeffectinthenext one year. While our exporters want to ship to Russia, the exchange rate risk is holding them back. Once the rupee mechanism is in place, a slew of sectors can gain, especially industrial equipment and food and agroprocessing. There is immense potential there,” said Ajay Sahai, DirectorGeneralandChiefExecutiveofFIEO.

Currently, exports to Russia are beingsettledineuros.

“Now, export orders to Russia are picking up with supply partnerships in place for at least the food items,” Sahaisaid.

A slew of Russian companies has tiedupwithIndianbuyersforsupplies.

India’s exports to Russia have seen the contraction ease to 4.72% in August onayear-on-yearbasisfromadeclineof 13.1% in July. New Delhi’s exports to Moscowsawa24%declineintheAprilto Augustperiodto$992million.

“With Russia, our imports are ten times the imports. But there is a very good chance of increasing our exports toRussia.That’sbecausewhentheyare holdingmuchoftheIndianrupee,either theywillwanttoinvestincapitalinIndia or they would increase our exports,” aGovernmentofficialsaid.

Export-Import Bank of India Managing Director Harsha Bangari said in an earlier interview that INR invoicing will be very process-driven and that there would be RBI oversight over the entire process. RBI has approved the mechanism, but banks which will open Vostro accounts will have to take due permission. So we are talking about RBI oversight over the entire process, she highlighted.

Exporters are also urging the department of commerce to ask the Reserve Bank of India to expedite the rupee settlement mechanism through the special Vostro account. Besides, it has asked the Government to also extend the export benefits from incentive schemes like Remission of Duties and Taxes of Export Products (RODTEP) and Export Promotion CapitalGoods(EPCG)tobeavailablein casetradeissettledinrupee.Currently, it is allowed only in case settlement is in freely convertible currencies like the dollar,euro,andBritishpound.

Nevertheless, imports from Russia grew by more than fivefold in the first five months of the current fiscal to $17.23 billion. Although crude oil imports accounted for 85% of total imports from Moscow, shipments of sunflower oil, fertilizers, silver, printed books, coriander seeds, and furniture items reported a sharp spike, suggesting that New Delhi was steadily expandingtradetieswithRussia.

Container-ship logjams off US ports finally easing as imports fall

WASHINGTON: The good news is that there were fewer than 100 container ships stuck waiting off North American ports as on last week. The bad news is that there were still 99 container ships offshore and the pre-COVIDnormwasinthesingledigits.

There’s still a long way to go to clear the backlog. But the current tally is now back to June levels and 35% off recent highs.

The number of ships waiting off NorthAmericanportspeakedataround 150 in January, with waiting vessels almost entirely off the West Coast. The queue fell through the spring as Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, improved their cargo flows. It rebounded back to over 150 in late July, propelled by traffic jams off East and Gulf Coast ports.

Assuming U.S. imports continue to fall month on month, ports should continue to bring down ship backlogs throughtheremainderoftheyear.

Data from Descartes and Panjiva showed that U.S. imports fell 12% in September versus August. Data from PIERS showed an 8.2% month-onmonthdecline.

As port queues wind down, vessel capacity that had been tied up waiting is released into the market.

This increases effective vessel capacity and the number of slots available for cargo. To the extent this is not offset by carriers “blanking” (canceling) sailings or suspending services, declining port congestion creates downward pressure onspotrates.

Over the past week, Drewry’s index for Shanghai-Los Angeles spot rates fell another 13% to $2,619 per forty-foot equivalent unit. Its Shanghai-New York index declined 8% to $6,321 per FEU.

Rates have held up better on the East Coast trans-Pacific route, where port congestion has supported pricing to a greater extent than on the West Coast route. Drewry’s ShanghaiLos Angeles index is down 76% year on year,whileitsShanghai-NewYorkindex isdown55%.
