Export incentives & sops failed to boost shipment, feel experts NEW DELHI: Even as India’s export promotion schemes have been under attack for several years in multilateral forums for their subsidy content, these have also been a disincentive for firms to grow. Consider the latest variant, the Merchandise Exports From India Scheme (MEIS), which is already on its way out. Between FY17 and FY19, while exports covered under the MEIS grew just 14.2% in rupee term, non-MEIS shipments rose at a much faster pace of 31.6%, according to an analysis. The below-par performance of the scheme can also be gauged from the fact that while MEIS beneficiaries comprised a vast majority of the exporter community (86% in Fy18), their exports stagnated at just about half of the overall outbound merchandise shipments. The overwhelming number of MEIS beneficiaries has obviously been on account of the scheme’s misplaced focus on small and marginal ones in ‘jobsensitive sectors”. It is worth noting that MEIS benefits (export scrips) more than doubled to Rs 39,298 crore in FY19 from Rs 18,117 crore in FY17. Not for nothing that the government is shifting away from the long-standing
MSME bias in its export strategy; its new product-linked incentives (PLI) – which are estimated to be worth Rs 2 lakh crore over a five-year period – are targeted mainly at large corporations in 13 critical sectors with massive export potential. Exports from seven key labourintensive sectors, ranging from textiles & garments to agriculture and gem & jewellery, barely grew — from $120.6 billion in FY17 to $124.6 billion in FY19. In FY20, these exports, in fact, dropped to just $114.1 billion. The Niti Aayog has argued that the MEIS is a “highly-fragmented” scheme that doesn’t incentivise high-volume and high-value production, nor does it boost exports significantly. Finance ministry officials, too, have endorsed such a view. The lacklustre performance of the MEIS has warranted a change in the way the compensation structure for boosting exports is designed. The government has already announced that it will roll out the so-called Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) scheme from January 2021 to replace the MEIS and make the outbound shipments zerorated. The scheme is essentially aimed at reimbursing even embedded taxes (that are not subsumed by the GST) paid on
inputs consumed in exports. The production-linked incentives are aimed at promoting manufacturing and exports in 13 sectors, including electronics/mobile phones, auto, battery cell, pharma, telecom networking, food and textiles. Through the PLI schemes, the government also marks a renewed focus on Make in India and a shift away from a long-standing MSME bias; while local manufacturing is the ostensible objective, there will be implicit impetus for large-scale exports. The Niti Aayog, which has mooted the PLI concept, has been pitching for boosting exports through the creation of champion sectors under the PLI schemes. The broader export community, meanwhile, feels that while a focussed approach may be desirable, the government must not leave out a vast number of exporters in the lurch by scrapping incentives to them once MEIS is phased out. Therefore, the RoDTEP must not just be launched once the MEIS is scrapped but its coverage must not be narrowed. After all, exports must be zerorated, in sync with global best practices and the incentives, be it under the MEIS and the RoDTEP, aren’t strictly subsidies, they argue.
Revised Policy for CFS/ICD/AFS will address overcapacity concerns in the Industry and is credit positive: ICRA The revised policy for se ng up CFS/ICD/AFS tries to address the issues of geographical disparity and concentra on and aims to align future developments with projects like rail freight corridor and inland waterways NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Indirect Tax and Customs (CBIC) has notified revised policy and guidelines for setting up of Container Freight Stations (CFS), Inland Container Deport (ICD) and Airfreight Stations (AFS). The revised policy aims to boost investment in CFS/ICD sector in underdeveloped regions in India, while the approvals in regions where already high concentration is there will be discouraged except in exceptional cases. The locations will be classified as Green, Blue or Red. While, the green zone will be the locations where the ICD/CFS concentration are low and will be open for new proposals, in case of blue zones the proposals will be accepted only based on specific trade generating locations and in red zone, the new proposals may not be accepted, except in exceptional cases. Further, there are also distance norms between two facilities and from ports. The approvals will be in consonance with national logistics policy/action plan.
Mr. K Ravichandran, Senior Vice President and Group Head, Corporate Ratings, ICRA commented on the policy “the new policy considers the issues faced by the sector; including regional disparities in concentration of facilities, with high concentration of CFS in Western and Southern regions and the adverse impact of new initiatives like Direct Port Delivery (DPD)/ Direct Port Delivery (DPE) on the CFS sector. While, the impact on volumes due to DPD implementation has stabilised to some extent, the margins have witnessed pressure and with growing investments in warehousing space, only CFS players with larger logistics offerings allowing them to re position their services will be able to continue in the long term. Hence, the zoning and distance rules in the revised policy will aid in more balanced development in the sector and prevent concentration of facilities which will improve the viability of existing/upcoming facilities by reducing competitive pressure.” ICRA notes that the revised policy has
factored the developments in the sector in the last two decades, including the growth in volumes during this period; geographical concentration of CFS/ICD; implementation of schemes like DPD/DPE and other automation and efficiency improvement measures; and also, the infrastructure developments like Direct Freight Corridor and inland waterways. On the forward looking aspects of the policy, Mr. Sai Krishna, Assistant Vice President and Associate Head, Corporate Ratings, ICRA added “the policy also aims to encourage development of facilities along infrastructure corridors like railway freight corridors and inland waterways, which will complement Gov’t aim on improving multi modal transportation and logistics in India. These coupled with the zoning and distance guidelines should aid in more rational and balanced capacity additions in these segments going forward, which should also be favourable for the credit profile of the companies in the sector in medium to long term”
Transporters claim they have not hiked freight charges MUMBAI: Rubbishing the reports of a hike in freight charges of surface transport due to non-operation of goods trains, transporters have claimed that they have not hiked even a single rupee in the existing freight charges. According to the businessmen, the manufacturing of goods in Ludhiana factories has slowed down due to unavailability of raw material because of which there has been a drop in the demand for trucks. They are also of the view that the government should introduce a special relief
package for the transporters as they have suffered huge losses during the lockdown and moreover, during the last few months their costs like salaries and wages, fuel and insurance costs have also risen sharply. Charan Singh Lohara, Chairman of All India Motor Transport Corporation (AIMTC), the apex body of transporters, said “The freight rates of transport services have remained same for months and not even a single member of ours has hiked the freight charges. All these are all rumours. Why will anyone hike the freight
charges when already there is no business and there is no logic for it since the demand is same as it was before the rail services were stopped. The simple logic behind no change in the demand is that when the factories do not have any raw material or have short supply of the same, they produce 50% of the goods which they used to do normally. So, in such a situation when the production has fallen drastically the quantity of goods coming to us for booking is almost the same as compared to the period when trains were running.”

ZIM to boost Alibaba.com’s cross border e-Commerce Shipping using startup Ladingo’s Technology HAIFA: ZIM recently teamed up with Alibaba.com, and the two signed a strategic agreement for the direct purchase of sea freight. ZIM introduced Ladingo’s technology which is expected to improve logistics services to both sellers and buyers on China’s largest e-commerce platform. Alibaba.com is the largest B2B e-commerce platform in the world, and recent improvements will probably solidify its position at the top for the foreseeable future. The improvements include tools that can help buyers find the right suppliers using reviews, transaction history, and a very useful trade assurance buyer protection coverage. ZIM is a global player in ocean freight shipping, with substantial market share in China’s main export trades. ZIM has been targeting the e commerce sector by making strategic investments in companies that aim to streamline B2B & B2C cross-border logistics. One of ZIM’s investments, initially made back in 2019, was in the Israeli logistics startup Ladingo, which developed a groundbreaking technology that combines optimization of cargo and routes, while enabling taxes automation as well as E2E shipment management, for small and medium importers eager to focus on increasing revenue and decreasing shipping costs. As part of the collaboration between Alibaba.com and ZIM, Ladingo’s innovative logistics technology will simplify
the shipping process while powering ZIM’s full door-2-door service through cloud software. Ladingo’s system can be used by both sellers and buyers. Its shipping rate includes taxes and duties, and all customs clearance is taken care of by Ladingo and is seamless to users. All parties agree that it’s “the full DDP solution”. Ladingo technology will enable Alibaba.com’s sellers and buyers to take full advantage of its optimization and consolidation capabilities, thus ensuring that they enjoy highly competitive rates. The full DDP solution is already operational. Eli Glickman, ZIM President and CEO, said: “ZIM leads the way in the introduction of advanced new technologies within the shipping industry. This is especially important nowadays, since COVID-19 changed the way we live and work almost overnight. Aligned with our vision, ‘Innovative Shipping Dedicated to You’, our unique tailor-made solution powered by ZIM Logistics China and Ladingo will enable Alibaba.com to stay ahead of the curve”. “B2B cross-border e-commerce should be as easy as classic B2C. When one wants to make an order of 2 pallets or even a container, there is no reason why the shipping or shopping experience should be any different”, says Ladingo CEO Hagar Valiano Rips.
PSA Antwerp advances supply chain transparency ® with launch of CALISTA P!NG+ ANTWERP: PSA Antwerp has launched CALISTA® P!NG+ which allows shippers and freight forwarders to receive detailed data on the status of their import containers on terminal. ® Users of CALISTA P!NG+ will not only receive information on the expected moment of discharge of their import containers but they will also be kept up-to-date in real-time on the actual unloading and the release statuses from shipping lines, customs and inspection authorities. This level of transparency provides shippers with a double win - saving of operational time when picking up their containers and significant simplification of the administrative follow-up associated with the import of containers. ® The CALISTA P!NG+ service has been tested extensively and is already operational at PSA Antwerp’s Europa and Noordzee terminals, where the exchange of information can be done via Excel uploads or through direct API integration. Interested parties can sign on to the service today and immediately benefit from the added transparency in the operation of their logistics chains. The level of information and data made available through this platform is a significant improvement over what is currently provided via the PSA Antwerp ePortal. Whilst CALISTA® P!NG+ is already in production with its first satisfied users onboard, PSA Antwerp is actively engaged in discussions with NxtPort to align this service with the CPU initiative to further secure the container release process in the Port of Antwerp. One difference between CALISTA® P!NG+ and CPU will be that CALISTA® P!NG+ is also available to shippers who are not directly involved in the release process but have partners taking care of the release process for them. Jan Van Mossevelde, Managing Director, PSA Antwerp, said: “With the official launch of this digital cargo solution service, we want to meet the market demand for more transparency in the logistics chain. This is only the first step as it is our intention to gradually expand CALISTA® P!NG+ with new
functionalities to help in the optimization of our customers' logistics flows.” For Wim Gijbels, Manager Global Freight Forwarding at Essers, "CALISTA® P!NG+ offers an easy-to-use dashboard which provides a clear picture at all times of where our containers are and their corresponding status. The direct integration with our freight forwarding software is also an important added value.” According to Maurits Jongens, Manager Operations at inforMore, CALISTA® P!NG+ creates a win-win for the users and the port: “Complete visibility of our import containers means that we can plan the onwards hinterland transport more efficiently which is important for the timely delivery of fresh fruits to retail shelves for example. Our containers are being moved faster on location at lower costs.” Raf De Keersmaecker, ICT Manager at Elite Digital Logistics, agrees: “CALISTA® P!NG+ shows the status of the containers at a glance. This makes it easier to coordinate followup transport and get the containers to the consumer faster. It’s an ideal tool to speed up the flow of goods in the logistics process.” CALISTA® is a global supply chain platform that brings together key physical, compliance and financial activities of ® cargo logistics on a digital eco-system. CALISTA serves the community of cargo owners and logistics service providers, and aims to improve efficiencies, facilitate trade and enhance the experience of moving your cargo to market. PSA International is partnering Global eTrade Services (GeTS) in the development of CALISTA®. Cabinet nod likely on Coastal Shipping Bill in Dec; to boost coastal cargo movement: Mansukh Mandaviya Cont’d. from Pg. 3
Mandaviya said once the legislation is enacted, it will give a big impetus to coastal cargo movement and reduce logistics costs. “The Bill at present is under circulation for interministerial deliberation,” the Minister said. He added that once approved, the coastal infrastructure will be augmented and necessary changes will be done in rules and regulations pertaining to Coastal Shipping. As the shipping sector grows and
evolves in the country, a need was felt to have a separate legislation on coastal shipping and recognise the policy priorities of the sector to meet the industry’s demands, the Minister said. The Ministry has drafted the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2020, in lieu of part XIV of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958. The Bill also proposes integration of coastal maritime transport with inland waterways. Mandaviya said the Government will focus on creating a port grid in the countr y besides development of
water ways and Coastal Shipping. “We have a coastline of 7,500 km which can be harnessed to fuel economic growth and employment,” he said. He said 1,400 km of waterways have been fully developed and an additional 1,000 km of water ways are being developed on a priority basis. Last week, the Minister said, “We are also focussing for creation of a port grid, encompassing various smaller ports like fisheries port, agriculture port and mineral port, so that port development and port-led development take place in the country.”
Congestion at Colombo Port boosts Transshipment business at Cochin Port Trust COCHIN: The congestion at Colombo Port has turned out to be an opportunity for Kochi at least in terms of gaining transshipment business following the diversion of some ships. Of late, the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam has started receiving additional mainline ships on ad hoc basis with transshipment volumes following the diversion of MSC Lines to Kochi. The rising number of Covid cases among port workers in Colombo, has aggravated the existing congestion in that port. Besides Kochi, Kamrajar Port near Chennai has also received one mainline vessel from Colombo with transshipment cargo, highly placed sources in the shipping fraternity said. Advantage Kochi The pandemic condition has not yet eased and this coupled with an earlier strike by workers at Colombo has worsened the situation, resulting in the delay in turnaround of many mainline vessels prompting them to look at
alternatives, the sources said. Cochin Port Trust received first vessel MSC Stella on November 7, followed by MSC Qindao (November 9) and Anton Schulte (November 11) and ER Yukohama (November 14) Calls for two more vessels during this month have been finalised. Discussion are on for bringing more vessels. Kochi has so far handled about 2,856 TEUs (Twenty-foot equivalent units) of foreign transshipment containers. The anchoring of these vessels has translated into a revenue earning of Rs. 2 crore by way of vessel related charges apart from 33.3 per cent of revenue sharing from DP World, the terminal operator, the sources said. Volumes up According to a source in DP World Cochin, the terminal has been seeing a steady increase in its transshipment volumes due to diversion of vessel calls from Colombo. These transshipment cargoes from MSC’s trans-continental services are to destinations such as Beira
( M o z a m b i q u e ) , M e r s i n ( Tu r k e y ) . “We are equipped to deal effectively with the customers’ needs and are constantly striving to create the competitive advantages to attract both gateway and transshipment volumes to Kochi”, he said adding that the terminal has clocked a 16 per cent rise in transshipment volumes in the first 10 months of 2020. M Beena, Chairperson, Cochin Port Trust said that, “the handling of these mainline vessels will definitely boost Kochi’s image in wooing transshipment cargoes especially at a time when the port is positioning itself as a transshipment hub of India to reduce the dependency on foreign ports for transshipment of Indian cargo”. During the difficult and challenging periods of Covid-19, box traffic was down by five per cent. However, the difficult period is over and traffic started picking up after the easing of lockdown, reporting an all-time high monthly traffic of 62,472 TEUs in September, port officials said.
Mormugao Port Trust extends concessions on port dues till June 2021 PANJI: Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) has announced concessional port dues for iron ore handling for the ongoing shipping season till June 2021, MPT announced in a trade notice. The concessional tariff is applicable for vessels involved in import and export of iron ore through MPT. Though an administrative matter, Goa Mineral Ore Exporters had asked MPT to extend the concessions as had been done in 2018 and 2019.
MPT’s traffic department issued the notice last week, informing vessel agents and exporters that the concessions in port dues, anchorage charges and transhipper charges offered to iron ore exporters are being extended till June 2021. “This is a flexibility given to MPT to offer concessions by the tariff authority,” said a stakeholder. MPT’s board of trustees met on October 29 and passed a resolution to
extend the concessions for handling iron ore west of the breakwater. The concessional tariff is applicable from October 1 and will be applicable till the arrival of the last vessel during the 2020-21 export season. Though along expected lines, the concessionary tariff will benefit iron ore exporters as it will reduce the overall cost for the sector.
India’s rice bran oil imports from Bangladesh are set to double in 2020-21 PUNE: India’s rice bran oil imports from Bangladesh are set to double in 2020-21, leaving the local industry located in the eastern parts of the country with only diplomatic options to try and cap these zero-duty shipments. Imports of rice bran oil from Bangladesh have already hit 60,000 tonnes during the April-October period compared with 75,000 tonnes during 2019-20. “With the peak season of rice bran
processing starting post-Diwali – as it is the harvest season for paddy – we expect that total imports of rice bran oil during 2020-21 fiscal would stand at 1 . 5 lak h t o nne s, ” sa id BV Me h ta, Executive Director of the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India. Unlike palm oil, which was earlier being re-routed into India via Bangladesh to avail of a duty advantage, rice bran oil originates in Bangladesh and is protected under the
South Asian Free Trade Agreement. Rice bran oil is one of the fastestgrowing categories among edible oils and their imports have been increasing over the past four years. Bangladesh has even imposed duty on export of rice bran to India, industry officials said. India produces about 1 million tonnes of rice bran oil, although output can go up to 1.6 million tonnes if all the rice bran available in the country is used for this purpose.

Gujarat Maritime Board may invite fresh bids for Nargol Port GANDHINAGAR: The Gujarat Government is weighing the option of inviting fresh bids for developing Nargol port. The state maritime regulator, Gujarat Maritime Board, has cancelled the work awarded to Cargo Motors for the Rs 4,000 crore port project. A consortium of Cargo Motors Pvt Ltd and Israel Ports Co was selected as the developer for Nargol port in August 2012. While Israel Ports soon backed out from the project, the development of the port has been stuck for quite some time n o w, s a i d s o u r c e s i n t h e s t a t e government. “Cargo Motors was given enough time to build the port but due to some reasons it could not be done in the stipulated time frame. Gujarat Maritime Board terminated the Letter Of Intent (LOI) awarded to the company last year. The government is now
exploring the option of inviting fresh bids,” said a Government official. Nargol lies about 120km south of Surat and 140km north of Mumbai. It is a multi-purpose port capable of handling solid, liquid and container cargo. Nargol was finalized as a port site after another port project at Maroli, about 10km away from here, was abandoned in the face of resistance from local fishermen who feared their livelihood could be affected if Maroli port was to be developed. Israeli firm Zim Integrated Shipping Services had won the Maroli port project but backed out later. The proposed port was to have an initial cargo handling capacity of 1.2 million twenty-feet equivalent units (TEU). Plans were also afoot to set up a car terminal by setting up a roll-on/rolloff (ro-ro) facility in future. This allows
wheeled cargo, such as automobiles, to be rolled off or on to vessels without the need for cranes. During the bidding process in the past, at least two dozen companies had initially shown interest in developing the port but only four, including SterliteVedanta combine and Gammon India Ltd, qualified for the final round. Cargo Motors and Israel Ports won the bid by offering high waterfront charges of 171%. GMB levies a royalty charge on per tonne of cargo to the port developer for using the the state’s waterfront. These charges depend on the type of cargo handled. As the earlier port project at Maroli faced problems of land acquisition, the Nargol project was proposed to be developed on reclaimed land measuring around 75-100 hectares.
Indian Exports to West Asia decrease by nearly 50% during April-August Period (YoY) NEW DELHI: It’s not just a Covidinduced slowdown in key markets — the US and the EU — that is troubling Indian exporters. The oil revenuedependent west-Asian nations, traditionally the third-largest destination, contributed the most to India’s export contraction this fiscal. The country’s outbound shipment to West Asia crashed by more than 46% on year in the April-August period of this fiscal to $11.9 billion, way above a 27% contraction in its overall merchandise exports to $97.7 billion. Similarly, exports to politically-sensitive South Asia plunged by 35% from a year before, show the latest DGCIS data. Consequently, the share of West Asian nations in India’s exports dropped to just over 12% in the first five months of this fiscal, against 17% a year before. Even south Asian countries made up for only 6.1% of India’s exports, against 6.9% a year earlier. If the situation persists, it can potentially delay an export recovery. As such, merchandise exports, which grew in September after seven successive months of decline, lost the
momentum again in October and recorded a 5.4% fall, highlighting fragile external demand. Exporters say the Covid outbreak accentuated a demand slowdown caused by subdued oil prices in the West-Asian region, mainly the UAE and Iran, while frosty political ties with Nepal and Pakistan has hit supplies to South Asia. Interestingly, a 27% year-on-year jump in exports to China in the AprilAugust period, despite the pandemic and a border clash, has driven up India’s shipment marginally to North-eastern Asia, which has now replaced the EU as New Delhi’s largest export destination after the Americas. Exports to the EU dropped by almost 32% to $15.9 billion up to August this fiscal. In West Asia, exports to the UAE plunged the most, by 59% to $5.2 billion until August this fiscal, while those to Iran dropped by 49% to $907 million and Saudi Arabia by 13% to $2 billion. India usually supplies basmati rice, textiles and garments, capital goods, automobiles, gem and jewellery and organic chemicals in large volumes.
In South Asia, Nepal, which usually depends heavily on Indian supplies, cut down on purchases amid a row with New Delhi even as its leadership cosied up to Beijing. Exports to Nepal crashed by over 47% to $1.6 billion until August, while those to Pakistan, unsurprisingly, declined by 85% to just $93 million. Trade with Pakistan has taken a massive beating after New Delhi stripped Islamabad of the mostfavoured nation status unilaterally granted by it, in the wake of the Pulwama terror attack and the Balakot airstrike last year. Of course, exports to Bangladesh dropped at a slower pace of 19% to $2.5 billion between April and August. India exports a broad range of items to South Asian nations, including petroleum products, cereals, cotton, organic chemicals, phamaceuticals, steel and capital goods. India’s exports had witnessed a record 61% crash in April in the wake of the lockdown, although the contraction subsequently narrowed to 12.7% in August. However, the contraction in October after a rise in the previous month, reflected the bumps in the path to recovery.
Indian economy may be recovering faster than anticipated: Oxford Economics LONDON: The Indian economy is seen recovering faster than expected and the Reserve Bank is likely to have come to an end of the rate easing cycle, according to global forecasting firm Oxford Economics. It further said that inflation is expected to average significantly above 6 per cent in the fourth quarter of the current fiscal and the RBI may hold policy rates in December monetary policy review meeting. “Consumer inflation rose back to pre-virus highs in October, with
almost every broad category other than fuel experiencing a rise in prices. While Q4 is likely to mark the peak for inflation, we have turned more cautious on the trajectory over 2021,” it said. Costlier vegetables and eggs pushed up retail inflation to a nearly six-and-ahalf year high of 7.61 per cent in October, keeping it significantly above the comfort zone of the Reserve Bank. Retail inflation stood at 7.27 per cent in September 2020. “At the same time, robust bottom-up
activity data suggest that the economy may be recovering faster than we anticipated. As such, we see an increasing possibility that the RBI’s easing cycle has ended,” Oxford Economics said. Moody’s Investors Service has also revised upwards its GDP forecast for India to (-) 8.9 per cent contraction in the 2020 calendar year, as the economy reflates after a long and strict nationwide lockdown but added the recovery is patchy.

CMA CGM launches ACT with CMA CGM+, a full range of value-added services enabling its customers to reduce their environmental impact • ACT with CMA CGM+ comprises four services, enabling its customers to analyze, reduce and offset the environmental footprint of goods’ transport. • The complete range is available throughout all the Group’s shipping subsidiaries and in all the markets it serves. MARSEILLE: A p e e r l e s s CMA CGM Group offering, helping its customers to embrace the push for cleaner energy solutions in the shipping sector The CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, is launching ACT with CMA CGM+, an array of solutions, helping its customers lighten their environmental footprint and make their cargo carbon neutral. Available throughout all the Group’s shipping subsidiaries, this new offering consists of four services, enabling its customers to analyze their environmental footprint, use cleaner alternative energy sources and to offset the emissions generated during the transport of their goods. CLEANER ENERGY LNG and CLEANER ENERGY B I O F U E L : Tw o s o l u t i o n s d e l i v e r i n g r e d u c t i o n s i n environmental footprint CMA CGM made the groundbreaking decision to power 26 of its containerships using liquefied natural gas by 2022, and seven of these are already in service. Thanks to the CLEANER ENERGY LNG offering, customers will be able to choose to transport their goods using LNG, a novel technology that helps to preserve air quality by eliminating almost all atmospheric pollutants. Through its greater energy efficiency and the use of renewable biomethane sources, this offering also delivers a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. CMA CGM was also the first shipping group to successfully use biofuel on its containerships. Thanks to the CLEANER ENERGY BIOFUEL offering, the Group’s customers will be able to opt for a transport solution for their goods using biofuel generated from used cooking oil.
These alternative fuel-based solutions can unlock reductions in greenhouse gas emissions of between 15% and 85%, providing CMA CGM’s customers with a wide range of solutions to decarbonize their cargo. ECO MONITOR and POSITIVE O F F S E T : Tw o s o l u t i o n s f o r analyzing and offsetting environmental footprints Thanks to ECO MONITOR, the CMA CGM Group’s customers will be able to keep track of their environmental footprint in real time and take action more easily using this data. This service will be rolled out from 2021. With POSITIVE OFFSET, the CMA CGM Group’s customers can offset their emissions by contributing to Gold Standard carbon sequestration projects involving local communities. By mixing and matching the various solutions available in the ACT range, the CMA CGM Group’s customers can make their cargo carbon-neutral, while helping drive forward the energy transition in the shipping sector, which accounts for 90% of international goods’ trade. Marc Bourdon, Senior Vice-President, Commercial and Agencies Networks, CMA CGM Group, commented: “The CMA CGM Group has always considered its business performance as intrinsically linked to its social and environmental per for mance. We have made groundbreaking decisions advancing the shift to cleaner energy and helping push the whole industry forward. Through ACT with CMA CGM+, we are sharing our energy transition solutions for shipping and providing our customers with effective solutions.”
BIC and DCSA collaborate to standardize container facility identication BIC releases API to enable universal digital access PARIS / AMSTERDAM: BIC (Bureau International des Containers) and DCSA (Digital Container Shipping Association) today announced completion of their collaboration to standardize the codes used to identify facilities such as depots, container yards, M&R vendors and other supply chain container facilities. Thanks to the active participation by DCSA member ocean carriers as well as several of the largest leasing companies, the organizations have achieved a clean, machinereadable database of over 11,000 facilities in 160 countries. Each facility in the database now has a structured address, GPS coordinates and a 9-character BIC Facility Code assigned to it that can be easily consumed by existing IT systems to facilitate adoption. Machine learning techniques were used to sanitize and align nearly 30,000 facility codes from 10 major carriers and lessors, resulting in high-quality, harmonized facility names, addresses, GPS coordinates, and the standardized code the industry was looking for. DCSA Track & Trace standards, for example, now refer to the BIC Facility Code to identify places for supply chain events without ambiguity. The API, currently available on SwaggerHub, will enable supply chain participants to ensure their systems are utilizing a unique, standardized code for every container facility. Those wishing to host their own version can subscribe to automatic synchronous updates to ensure they are always up to date. In addition, the API serves both the BIC Facility Code and the SMDG Ocean Terminal code lists, meaning the industry can access a one-stop API for the 11,000+ BIC Facility Codes and 900+ SMDG Ocean Terminal Codes. The BIC Facility Code, or “Locode”, was originally developed under international standard ISO 9897, assigned to the BIC in 1997 and is now a listed “child code” of the UN/Locode.
Adoption of the harmonized codes is expected to result in smoother communication between parties, quicker identification of facilities by third parties such as motor carriers and telematics providers, more efficient lessor-leasee communications related to on/off-hires, and better visibility for BCOs. Looking ahead, geo-features (geo-fencing coordinates) are planned, which will make the database even more valuable for operators of smart containers or assets looking to automatically confirm the facility in which a container is located, or to enable location-based automation. “Over the last few years our industry’s data silo mentality has rapidly given way to a new appreciation of standardization and the efficient sharing of data. This new focus has allowed us to conduct a global facility code harmonization we have long wished to complete, thanks in large part to the DCSA’s assistance in actively engaging the major carriers. Moreover, the participants are eager to embrace the API, which will ensure the harmonized codes are widely available and in sync going forward. We see this as an important enabler for digitalization efforts underway in the industry,” said Douglas Owen, Secretary General of the BIC. “At the outset of DCSA, our Chairman André Simha pointed to the non-standard facility code as a simple yet effective example of the kind of standardization where the industry needs to play catch up with other industries, such as air travel, which utilizes a standard airport code worldwide,” said Thomas Bagge, CEO DCSA. “With the standardization of the BIC Facility Code and the API, the container transportation industry is one step closer to this goal. This is a good example of the foundational work required to make digital transformation a reality in container shipping, and we are pleased to be a part of this important collaboration with BIC.”
