MUMBAI : Deendayal ( f o r m e r l y K a n d l a ) port was the b e s t p e r f o r m e r a m o n g t h e government-owned ports, recording almost double of the national growth. Cargo handled by this Gujarat port, which lies close proximity to Adaniowned Mundra, India’s single largest port, grew 9.88 per cent to 71.39 MT compared with 64.97 MT in H1FY23.
Ports at Kolkata and Haldia underperformed major port peers in the first half of the fiscal by a wide berth, with the duo recording a deceleration of 8 7 per cent on a combined basis in terms of cargo handling, compared with a 5 per cent rise recorded by 12 major ports.
Coking coal, which accounts for the largest chunk of cargo handled by the duo, recorded a sharp 33 per cent fall during April-September of FY24 compared with the same period of the last fiscal.
Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) handled 28.54 million t o n n e s ( M T ) c a r g o i n A p r i lSeptember 2024, compared with 31.26 MT a year ago. However, the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) showed a sharper cut of 15 18 per cent with tonnage slipping to 7.11 MT from 8.38 MT. In contrast, Haldia Dock Complex recorded 6.34 per cent drop to 21.42 MT against 22.88 MT a year ago.
A p a r t f r o m S M P K , o n l y Mormugao in Goa recorded a drop in cargo handling where tonnage slipped by 5.67 per cent. However, all major ports together handled 413.74 MT cargo in six months compared with 393.9 MT in H1FY23.
A major reason for SMPK’s fall was diversion of coking coal cargo f r o m r i v e r i n e a n d l o w d r a f t Haldia/Kolkata to nearby deeper drafted sea ports at Paradip and Adani-owned Dhamra by traders and end-users. Compared with 10.22 MT coking coal, which is mostly imported
from Australia and used by blast furnace-based steel makers, handled by SMPK in H1FY23, the volume dropped to 6.86MT in H1FY24.
Paradip’s coking coal tonnage increased by about 1 MT to 8.4 MT in H1FY24 from 7 37 MT in H1FY23 SMPK officials had earlier said coking coal volume would pick up from October, which signals the onset of the fair weather season, allowing big ships to anchor at Sandheads.
Due to the spike in seaborne bulk cargo rates, led by the Red Sea crisis, importers avoided anchorages like Sandheads and Sagar under SMPK. The fall in anchorage cargo traffic of coal has in turn affected the handling of this cargo by barges within the port and the Haldia floating jetty, amplifying the traffic loss.
Lower draft does not allow big ships which carry larger parcels to come to Haldia, increasing the cost of logistics for importers who miss out on economies of scale.
NEW DELHI : India’s trade deficit narrowed to a five-month low of $20.78 billion in September 2024 as goods exports grew a nominal 0.5 per cent (year-on-year) to $34.58 billion, after a two-month consecutive fall, and import growth slowed down to 1.6 per cent to $55.36 billion.
“In merchandise, which is one sector that has been impacted globally, India is doing much better than the global average Both in terms of merchandise and services exports, India is doing better than the rest of the world. Our exporters,
despite so many difficulties, have been able to keep our head high,” C o m m e r c e S e c r e t a r y S u n i l Barthwal said.
Trade trends
In April-September 2024-25 exports grew by 1 per cent to $213.22 billion, while imports increased by 6.16 per cent to $ 350.66 billion. The trade deficit during the first half of the fiscal was $137.44 billion, which was higher than the trade deficit of $119.24 billion in the comparable period of 2023-24.
Indian exports had grown despite
global uncertainties driven by sectors s u c h a s e n g i n e e r i n g g o o d s , chemicals, plastic, electronics and ready-made garments, Barthwal pointed out.
Last week, the WTO had lowered its global trade growth projection for 2025 to 3 per cent from the previous 3.3 p e r c e n t w h i l e i n c r e a s i n g i t marginally to 2.7 per cent for 2024 from 2.6 per cent earlier and had warned that geopolitical tensions and policy uncertainty, largely due to the West Asia crisis, posed a downside risk to the forecast.
NEW DELHI : China has emerged as India's top import source with USD 56.29 billion worth of inbound s h i p m e n t s d u r i n g t h e A p r i lSeptember period of this fiscal, according to the commerce ministry data.
During the period, the US emerged as the top export destination for the country with outbound shipments increasing by 5.62 per cent to USD 40.38 billion.
The imports from China rose by 11.5 per cent during the first half of this fiscal. The imports stood at USD 50.48 billion during April-September 2023.
During the period, the top
10 import sources of India were China, Russia, the UAE, the US, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Korea, Switzerland and Singapore, the data showed.
Imports from Russia rose to USD 32.18 billion during April-September this fiscal from USD 30.43 billion a year ago.
Similarly, the inbound shipments from the UAE rose to USD 31 46 billion from USD 20.70 billion in the first half of the last fiscal.
During the period, the top 10 export destinations of the country w e r e t h e U S , t h e U A E ,
Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh,
Germany and South Africa.
Exports to the UAE rose from USD 15.47 billion during AprilSeptember 2023 to USD 17.24 billion during April-September this fiscal.
Similarly, outbound shipments to China increased to USD 6.91 billion from USD 7.63 billion in the first half of the last fiscal.
In 2023-24, the US was India's largest trading partner, followed by China.
China was India's top trading partner from 2013-14 till 2017-18 and in 2020-21. Before China, the UAE was the country's largest trading partner The US was also the largest partner in 2021-22 and 2022-23.

N E W D E L H I : R e s p o n d i n g t o t h e monthly merchandise exports of USD 34.58 billion, which rebounded back in positive territory with an increase of 0 5 percent, FIEO President, Mr Ashwani Kumar said that even such a marginal increase in merchandise exports, amidst rising geopolitical tension coupled with economic uncertainties and logistical challenges is good sign of revival.
Mr Ashwani Kumar added that the o n g o i n g i n t e r n a t i o n a l t r a d e disruptions along with the volatility in crude and metal prices have also played key role in bringing down the value of exports to some extent. Mr Kumar also said that rising tensions between Israel-Iran led to logistical c h a l l e n g e s w i t h r e g a r d t o international trade getting impacted as most of our trade to Europe, Africa, CIS and Gulf region happening through the Red Sea route or the gulf
region. President Chief also added that in spite of putting in so much of h a r d w o r k b y t h e e x p o r t i n g community in exports, the challenges with regard to trade finance still remains the key for the MSMEs as it is really impacting the competitiveness of Indian products in the global markets.
FIEO Chief added that imports increased by about 1.6 percent to USD 55 36 billion in September 2024 bringing the trade gap to USD 20.78 billion during the month, which needs to be looked into. Gold imports also edged up to USD 4.39 billion in September against USD 4.11 billion in the same month last year, Mr Kumar added.
However, good growth in exports of engineering, chemicals, plastics, pharma, readymade garments and electronics etc is an encouraging sign for job growth in the country.
FIEO President, Mr Ashwani Kumar further reiterated that the urgent and immediate need of the
hour is to take steps on the liquidity front with deeper interest subvention support and extension of interest equalisation scheme for at least 5 years, creating a predictable business environment for the exporters.
The imposition of cap of Rs 50 lakh p e r c o m p a n y i n t h e I n t e r e s t Equalisation Scheme has hit many MSMEs and they have lost order with non-availability of further subvention. P
Intertest Equalisation Scheme with a cap of Rs 10 Crore for all MSMEs and 410 tariff lines for a period of 5 years.
Besides, Government should extend the RoDTEP benefits to all sector of exports as available during pre-Covid times. Conclusion of some of the key FTAs including UK, Peru, Oman and Sri Lanka should soon see the light of the day, which FIEO have been urging to the government for q

The bill proposes to do away with the requirement of trading licenses for Indian flag vessels for coastal trade. Regulation for international trade ships is also expected to be aligned to global standards.
The Bill also proposes to integrate coastal maritime transport with inland waterways. The Centre aims to create a conducive environment to reduce transportation costs and, at the same time, encourage competition in the sector. Steps could also be put in place for Indian vessels to increase their share in coastal shipping.
It proposes to create a secure, robust framework for regulation of the commercial activity of coastal trade and to create a national database of coastal shipping with information regarding licenses issued.
SEOUL - HMM has taken delivery of its 11th large container ship this year, marking a significant milestone in the company’s fleet expansion plan.
The 13,000 TEU-class vessel, which was part of a 12-ship order placed midway through 2021, leaves just one more ship to be delivered.
The newly delivered vessel, named ‘HMM Opal’, is set to begin service soon. The ship will be deployed on the Pacific South Express (PSC) route, which serves the West Coast of the United States.
In June 2021, HMM placed orders for six container ships each with Hanwha Ocean (formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, totaling 12 ships.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries completed its portion of the contract earlier this year With HMM Opal now delivered; Hanwha Ocean is in the process of building the final vessel in the series.
HMM’s decision to place a large-scale order for ecofriendly container ships was made in the midst of the global logistics crisis triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic.
This move aimed to strengthen the company’s competitiveness in the green shipping sector and diversify its fleet.
The first ship from this series, ‘HMM Garnet,’ constructed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, was delivered earlier this year. Once the final vessel is completed, HMM’s total fleet capacity will expand to approximately 1 million TEU.
With ultra-large container ships of over 10,000 TEU accounting for more than 80 percent of HMM’s fleet capacity, the Seoul-based company expects to significantly improve both cost competitiveness and operational efficiency.
This scale of fleet expansion is unprecedented in the global shipping industry and positions HMM as a leader in eco-friendly, large-capacity shipping.

…At APM Terminals we’re very aware that the life of seafarers can be hard. We’re here to help our shipping line customers as well as landside stakeholders experience ease of doing business. But we’re also keen to help the communi es in which we operate.
THE HAGUE : APM Terminals standards of corporate social responsibility mean we prioritise the safety and w e l f a r e o f c o l l e a g u e s a n d partners, but we go further – to boost livelihoods, support education and provide essential infrastructure We do this not because it's better for business but because we want to be the best terminal operator in the world – for all stakeholders. Lifting the standard of responsibility for our stakeholders means we care for children, the environment and animal life in our CSR outreach, with a special focus on supporting entrepreneurship for women, small businesses and artisans.
Fishing for improvements
Community efforts in and around Pipavav include the 425 fishers in nearby Jafrabad who recently received solarpowered fish dryers, giving these independent workers a cleaner, more efficient and eco-friendly means of drying their haul. To help them boost their incomes and better support their families and the development of their communities, we've also supported the fishers to gain better market access & to improve their bargaining power through theformationofSagarmitra,aFisheriesProducerCompany.
Beyond this – at Shiyalbet, Divlo and Thavi – APM Terminals Pipavav has distributed 827 first aid boxes, 227 ice boxes, 256 pairs of gloves, 230 sets of solar boat lights, as well as protective boots, crates, vessel GPS units to enhance safety at sea, and more. It is estimated that the equipment and the impact of the project has increased the yearly income of fishermen and -women by 10-15%.
Schools and Training
Other CSR activities in the region include the provision of sanitation units at a girls' school in Rajula, the construction of three classrooms at a boys' school in Sanghavi, software for a medical centre, participation in
household water connection at Mota Liliya as well as disaster relief and rehabilitation work for poor and marginalised families.
To help eradicate poverty, APM Terminals Pipavav has helped 24,000 villagers and 4,000 students in Rampara-2, Bherai, Kadiyali, Pipavav Dham, Shiyalbet, Padar, Devpara, Thavi and Diwlo by providing outdoor and indoor playgrounds, a mobile science and mathematics lab, library support in 28 schools, Smart classrooms in 10 schools – all of which has contributed to a 31% increase in school enrolment from 50% to 81% In addition, community satisfaction relating to the projects has been scored at 9.43 out of 10 – and we'll keep working to earn those last 0.57 points.
While we offer helping hands to our communities, we applaud the individual effort shown by students who take every opportunity to achieve results, improving their lives and prospects. To date, 2,585 young people have gained skills, work placements and completed leadership training at Gujarat Maritime University, in customs related roles, nursing, electrical and computer training. Of these, 1,305 were women, who are often under-represented in the employment market.
This year, APM Terminals Pipavav has also supported the deepening and desilting of water bodies and the construction of check dams and has participated in beach cleanups An annual kitchen garden project provides support to more than 300 underprivileged households, all of which has resulted in a 15-20% increase in the income of small and marginalised farmers. Small farmers also benefit from the mobile veterinary unit supplied by APM Terminals Pipavav, which has treated approximately 26,000 livestock in a single year. All of these initiatives at Pipavav reaffirm our global commitment to sustainable development & community empowerment in our 60 terminals worldwide.
