Emphasizing the role of every state in the journey of making India ‘Viksit Bharat’ during the Amrit Kaal. PM Modi recalled the role of ports in India’s erstwhile prosperity in earlier times and envisaged a similar role for ports now when India is taking new strides and becoming a major center of global trade. In such a scenario, the Prime Minister said that the government is engaged in improving the strength of port cities like Kochi. He listed an increase in port capacity, investment in port infrastr ucture, and improved connectivity of ports under the Sagarmala Project. He mentioned the country’s largest dry dock that Kochi received today. Other projects like shipbuilding, ship repairing and LPG import terminal will also give momentum to development in Kerala and the southern region of the country. He also noted the honour of building ‘Made in India’ aircraft carrier INS Vikrant with the Kochi Shipyard. New facilities will enhance the capabilities of the shipyard many times.
The Prime Minister highlighted the reforms made in the ports, shipping and waterways sector in the last 10 years and said that it has brought new investments in India’s ports and created new employment opportunities. He informed that the reforms of rules related to Indian Seafarers led to an increase in the number of seafarers in the country by 140 percent. Within the country, the Prime Minister said that passenger and cargo transport got a major boost by making use of inland waterways. “Sabka Prayas yields better results”, the Prime Minister remarked highlighting that Indian ports have achieved double-digit annual growth in the last 10 years. Till 10 years ago, the Prime Minister recalled that ships had to wait quite long at the ports and the unloading took very long. “Today, the situation has changed”, Shri Modi said, informing that India has surpassed many developed nations when it comes to shipturnaround time. “The world is recognizing India’s potential and position in global trade”, PM Modi said, throwing light on the agreements made during India’s G20 Presidency regarding the Middle EastEurope Economic Corridor. Shri Modi underlined that the Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor will further strengthen the creation of Viksit Bharat by giving a boost to the coastal economy of India. The Prime Minister also touched upon the recently launched Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision which presents a roadmap to reinforce India’s maritime prowess for Viksit Bharat. He reiterated the government’s efforts to build mega ports, shipbuilding and ship-repairing infrastructure in the country PM Modi said that the new dry dock is the national pride of India. This will not only enable big vessels to dock but also make shipbuilding and ship repair work possible here, reducing dependence on foreign countries and will also save foreign exchange. Referring to the inauguration of the International Ship Repair Facility, the Prime Minister said that it will transform Kochi into India and Asia’s largest ship repair center. Drawing the analogy of multiple MSMEs coming together in the manufacturing of INS Vikrant, the Prime Minister expressed confidence in the creation of a new ecosystem of
MSMEs with the inauguration of such huge shipbuilding and repair facilities. He further added that the new LPG Import Terminal will meet the LPG needs of Kochi, Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Calicut, Madurai, and Trichy while also supporting industries, other economic development activities and creation of new jobs in these areas. The P rime Minister noted the foremost position of Kochi Shipyard’s green technology capacities and its primacy in making ‘Make in India’ vessels. The Prime Minister also praised the electric vessels made for the Kochi Water Metro. Electric hybrid passenger ferries for Ayodhya, Varanasi, Mathura and Guwahati are being made here. “Kochi Shipyard is playing an important role in modern and green water connectivity in the cities of the country”, he said. He also mentioned zero-emission electric cargo ferries being made for Norway and the work in progress on the world’s first hydrogen-fueled feeder container vessel. “Kochi Shipyard is further strengthening our mission of taking India towards hydrogen fuelbased transport. I am confident that very soon the country will also get indigenous hydrogen fuel cell ferry”, PM Modi added. The Prime Minister highlighted the role of the fishermen community in the blue economy and port-led development. Shri Modi credited the manifold increase in fish production and exports in the last 10 years to the development of new infrastructure projects under PM Matsya Sampada Yojna, subsidy provided by the central government for modernized boats to carry out deep sea fishing and Kisan Credit Cards for fishermen along the lines of farmers. He said that the government is giving impetus to boosting India’s contributions in the seafood processing sector which will lead to a huge increase in the income of fishermen and make their lives easier. The Prime Minister concluded by wishing for continued rapid development of Kerala and congratulated the citizens for the new infrastructure projects. Governor of Kerala, Shri Arif Mohammed Khan, Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal were present on the occasion among others.

goals and will meet all the targets in time while meeting the requirements of a growing economy. He was speaking at a CII-EY Breakfast Session on ‘accelerating India’s energy transition towards sustainable economic growth’ on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2024. “I don’t think we need to wait till 2028 to become a five trillion dollar economy,
and if you look at what is happening, it should happen much before 2028,” he said while listing various macroeconomic parameters.” “I also think that the transition has to be orderly because transition by nature has to have both a clear roadmap and it must have in place all the safeguards that will ensure that there are no knee-jerk decisions taken,” he noted.

BPCL to run New Liquid Terminal at J N Port on interim basis N AV I M U M B A I : State-run oil refiner Bharat Petroleum Corporation ltd (BPCL) will start operating a new liquid cargo berth adjacent to the facility it already runs at Jawaharlal Nehru Port as an “interim” arrangement till the port authority finalise the tender to pick an operator which is currently awaiting security clearance for bidders from the Union government. BPCL is one of the seven bidders to place price bids to equip, operate and maintain the new liquid cargo berths 3 and 4 at the port located near Mumbai. The price bids are opened only after the port authority receives security clearance for all the bidders, according to the process followed for privatising cargo terminals at major ports (owned by the Union government) on public-private-partnership (PPP) mode. With the security clearance for Aegis Logistics Ltd, one of the seen bidders, getting delayed, the port authority reckons that the new berths will be rendered idle if an operator is not found soon. “So, what we decided, here is a public sector undertaking (BPCL) who is one of the bidders and is also operating the liquid berths 1 and 2. We called them and told them that you can invest some Rs2.5 crores in a pipeline to start the facility. They have agreed to invest that amount, operationalise the new terminal and run it till the successful bidder is selected,” said a port official. Seven entities including Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Ltd, JSW Infrastructure Ltd, Ganesh Benzoplast Ltd, IMC Ltd and Aegis Logistics Ltd are competing for the
30-year contract that will add 4.5 million tonnes (mt) of petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL), edible oils, chemicals, molasses, and any new product/liquid bulk capacity at J N Port. BPCL, according to the official, is expected to start operating the new berths later this month or from early February, on the “same terms and conditions” as the liquid berths 1 and 2 which it is operating, because it is a government run company. “This will ensure that the asset will not remain idle till the tender is finalised,” the official said. BPCL will be able to run the new berths as an interim arrangement for at least 6-8 months, the timeline by which the successful bidder (if selected in the next few days) will have to comply with the conditions precedent, sign the concession agreement and achieve financial closure before starting operations. The port official said that BPCL will make “enough money” in the interim arrangement that it would be able to recover the investment in the pipeline in 1-2 months.
COSCO SHIPPING strikes deal for Construction of Two 325,000-DWT Methanol-Powered Dual-Fuel Mineral Ore Carriers BEIJING: On December 29, COSCO SHIPPING Bulk entered into a contract with COSCO SHIPPING Heavy I n d u s t r y Ya n g z h o u t o construct two 325,000-DWT methanol dual-fuel powered large ore carriers, marking another significant milestone in the green, low-carbon, and intelligent transformation of their fleet. As per the agreement, the first vessel of this category is scheduled for delivery and operational deployment in the fourth quarter of 2026, making it the world’s first large methanol dual-fuel ore carrier to be operationally deployed. Under the continuous promotion of the group’s joint innovation studio, COSCO SHIPPING Bulk and COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry have jointly developed this ship type that is currently the world’s largest and most advanced methanol dual-fuel ore carrier. This vessel boasts high technical content and exceptional green environmental performance. The ship measures 339.9 meters in length, 62 meters in width, and 30 meters in depth with a design draft of 21.25 meters. It features a main engine that meets Tier III emissions standards and is equipped with a high-
power shaft generator, desulfurization tower, and various high-efficiency energy-saving devices. Designed for large capacity, it is capable of handling the loading of bauxite, iron ore, and other goods of varying densities. At the outset of its design, this ship type takes into account actual usage needs and thoroughly considers the requirements of different stages of CII. Innovatively, it proposes a methanol dual-purpose tank design scheme that allows for flexible compliance with carbon emission indicators across various stages.

Notably, Mawani achieved its highest-ever monthly container handling statistics in May 2023, with an 18.80% increase in the number of handled containers. Additionally, Jeddah Islamic Port recorded its highest monthly handling statistics in October 2023, with a total of 511,348 TEU handled, while King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam also achieved a record number with 211,202 TEU handled in a single month in July 2023.
Ahead of Budget, here’s what India Inc wants on Customs front NEW DELHI: India awaits Interim Budget 2024 with a sense of overriding national confidence and resilience amidst global headwinds reflected in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) views projecting India to be the fastest growing major economy in the world. To sustain and build upon this growth momentum, there are significant expectations that the Interim Budget may include
measures to rev up the export engine by improving the quality of trade facilitative environment, focusing on fostering domestic manufacturing along with a larger slice of the greater value chain (GVC). There is widespread recognition of the significant progress made in streamlining cargo clearance processes, as reflected in implementation of all the commitments made under the
World Trade Organization’s Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) and quantified benefits reported by the National Time Release Study of 2023. However, the fact that the actual performance has fallen short of average release time targets included in the National Trade Facilitation Action Plans (NTFAP), indicates the need to focus on improving the quality of measures, in particular, extending digitization drive to Customs dispute resolution and litigation processes.
