Adani Ports’ revenue projected at Rs 50,000 crore in next four years
AHMEDABAD: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. surpassed its guidance for cargo, revenue, and Ebitda in fiscal year 2024. These metrics continued to grow in the fourth quarter, with net profit rising by 76 87% to Rs 2,014.8 crore in the January-March quarter. The revenue target for financial year 2025 appears to be attainable, given the increasing volumes. A look at how the company has beat its own growth guidance and expansion plans.
Geographical Exposure
The company currently operates 1 5 p o r t s , w i t h t h e s h a r e o f Mundra—previously accounting for the majority of volumes—decreasing from 89% to 44% of total cargo volumes This shift has brought about parity in the West-East coast share, with the East’s contribution rising from zero in 2014 to 43%.
The recently acquired Gopalpur Port will further boost revenue from the East Coast.
Five-Year Performance Review
In fiscal 2021, the port operator projected cargo volumes of 500 million metric tonnes and revenue of Rs 30,000 crore by the end of FY25. By fiscal 2024, its revenue had already reached Rs 26,700 crore, surpassing expectations Meanwhile, cargo volumes stood at 398 MMT in 2023, representing a higher growth rate than initially projected at the start of FY21 cargo volumes grew by 20% compared to the anticipated 17% CAGR. Similarly, the revenue achieved a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 29%, outpacing the estimated 24%.
Furthermore, this exceptional performance was accompanied by strong operational results, with Ebitda margins reaching 59%.
2030 Target
The company aims for robust cargo volume growth, targeting 1,000 MMT by 2030. As per its investor presentation, this goal is projected to drive revenue to Rs 50,000 crore by FY29, growing at a CAGR of 16% from FY24—doubling the
current levels. The growth will be fueled by Ebitda, with targeted margins reaching an impressive 64%.
Currently approaching 400 MMT, the company operates at a capacity of 627 MMT, allowing for incremental capacity expansion at its own pace Adani Ports anticipates cash flow generation of Rs 34,500 crore by FY29, achieving an 18% CAGR.
International Operations
In recent years, the company has strategically expanded its international operations. It oversees Israel’s largest port, Haifa Port, in partnership with the Gadot Group a significant venture established in 2022 that holds strategic importance for India In July 2022, the company secured a tender to privatize Haifa Port for NIS 4.1 billion (approximately $1.18 billion), with Adani Ports holding a 70% stake and Gadot retaining the remaining 30% under a concession period until 2054.
Additionally, the company holds operations and maintenance contracts in Australia and Tanzania. In Australia, it manages the Abbot Point Coal Terminal in Queensland through a 99-year lease.
The company’s latest international project involves constr ucting a container terminal in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This agreement, signed in 2022, includes partners John Keells (34% stake) and the Sri Lanka Port Authority (15% stake). During its recent earnings call, the company noted that operations in Sri Lanka will commence this year, although initial volumes are expected to be modest.
India’s Largest Port Operator
The company is India’s largest port operator, commanding a market share of 27% in cargo volumes, a significant increase from 10% in 2013. Growth has been fueled by operational excellence, cargo diversification, and business model transformation, according to company statements.
The company plans to enhance capacity across all ports, especially those acquired in recent years,
and is focused on commissioning the Vizhinjam Port in India.
Logistics Business
The ports business contributes 85% to the company ’s EBITDA, while the logistics business is also experiencing significant growth.
The company’s current assets include a rail track network, trains, grain silos, warehousing, trucking, and more. It has demonstrated substantial growth across these assets and has set ambitious goals for eight-fold growth in these verticals.
In fiscal year 2024, revenue from the logistics vertical reached Rs 2,100 crore, up from Rs 600 crore in FY19. EBITDA has increased from Rs 100 crore to Rs 500 crore, with a margin of 23%. The company anticipates achieving a 45% CAGR in revenue and EBITDA by FY29.
Debt And Credit Rating
The current net operating cash flows exceed annual loan repayments, as emphasized The objective is to reduce the current foreign debt of Rs 6,135 crore to a negligible level by FY27 and then increase it thereafter This strategy will significantly boost return ratios until FY27 and beyond, as projected, with net operating cash flow from operations expected to surpass debt levels until FY41.
Since March 2022, the average maturity has decreased by seven years to 4.6 years by the end of FY24, and the fund from operations to gross debt ratio has risen from 18% to 28%. Similarly, the FFO/interest coverage has improved from 4.5 times to 5.6 times during the same period.
The net debt/Ebitda ratio has decreased from 3.3 times in fiscal year 2021 to 2.3 times in FY24.
CARE Ratings assigned an ‘AAA’ rating to the company the highest credit rating in India—making it the first private corporate infrastructure developer to achieve this rating Additionally, S&P and ICRA upgraded the company’s outlook from ‘negative’ to ‘stable’ during the year.

Container Terminal Sector resilient in face of Global uncertainty
The 2020s have so far proved to be anything but uneven ul for the container sector. If a global pandemic wasn’t already enough of a shock to industry, the post-Covid period has presented ongoing challenges for both lines and terminal operators.
LONDON: Despite a change in Government, US-China relations have remained strained, and this has accelerated the pre-Covid trend t o w a r d s s u p p l y c h a i n diversification, driving strong container growth in (among others) the Southeast Asia, South Asia and Mexican markets.
The blockage of the Suez Canal by the Ever Given in 2021 may now be
c l a s s i f i e d b y s o m e i n d u s t r y c o m m e n t a t o r s a s a m i n o r inconvenience compared to the impact of the Houthi rebel attacks on commercial shipping in the southern Red Sea, which has resulted in rerouting of mainline services between Asia and Europe via the Cape of Good Hope.
However, the market conditions in 2024 are vastly different to the way they were three years ago and the sector has adjusted quickly to the
effective closure of the Suez routing on mainline services.
Container Lines ended 2023 with their backs against the ropes – freight rates were heading down, and financial losses were looming large. The latter duly manifested with carriers losing money in 4Q23 for the first time in over five years, but the narrative has shifted due to the Red Sea crisis that has squeezed capacity on trades previously linked by the Suez Canal, in turn priming freight rates for an unlikely recovery. While the change in effective capacity arising from Red Sea diversions masks the structural overcapacity within the container shipping sector, and spot rates are retreating once more, it is fair to say that the outlook for 2024 is brighter for carriers than it once was.
In contrast to their customers, terminal operators have shown
greater resilience in the face of the various post-COVID challenges Sector revenues surged on the back of increased storage revenues during the pandemic which undermined efficiency and increased operating costs, and terminal operator earnings received a major boost in 2021 that carried through into 2022.
The steep slowdown in demand experienced from mid 2022 coincided with a surge in global inflation that pushed up both labour and energy costs. While earnings have fallen back from the peak levels recorded in 1Q22, operators have successfully locked in a significant proportion of the gain via inflation-linked tariff increases and this has been further supported by r e s u m p t i o n o f n o r m a l v e s s e l schedules As a result, Drewry’s Global Container Terminal Earnings Index was up by almost 11% YoY in 4Q23.
April 2024 exports show positive growth, however continued buoyant order bookings remains the key for its renewed growth: FIEO
N E W D E L H I :
Reacting to the April, 2024
m e r c h a n d i s e e x p o r t figures, FIEO President, Mr Ashwani Kumar said that starting the new financial year 2024-25 on a positive note with US$ 34.99 billion and growth of over 1% compared to US$ 34.62 billion of April 2023 is good sign even during such challenging times. This not only shows the determination of the resilient exports sector but also efforts and hard work, which the exporting community is putting together The ongoing RussiaUkraine war coupled with various major geo-political tensions including the Red Sea crisis and Israel-Hamas c o n f l i c t h a s a l s o m a d e t h e international trade scenario much tougher for the Indian exporters, added Mr Kumar. We further hope that exports will start showing better growth numbers with improved demand in the European Union, UK, West Asia and the US, which has given boost to the order bookings by
over 10 % and has come as sign of recovery for labour-intensive sectors of exports including Leather & Leather products, Footwear and Apparels With fresh orders also expected to show some positive b e g i n n i n g , F I E O P r e s i d e n t Mr Kumar reiterated that tariff war between US and China may come as an opportunity for the country’s exports sector
FIEO Chief said that key sectors which have shown positive growth during the month of April 2024, include electronic goods, drugs & pharmaceuticals, organic & inorganic chemicals, petroleum products, p l a s t i c s & l

71.07 billion compared to US$ 63.03 billion in April 2023 increasing the trade deficit to US$ 6 51 billion compared to US$ 2.62 billion of April 2023, said FIEO President. Mr Kumar also added that though there is increase in imports mainly due to petroleum products, gold, pulses and vegetable oil but the increase in petroleum products and gold import will lead to increase in exports of petroleum products and gems & jewellery with a time lag.
FIEO President, Mr Ashwani Kumar further reiterated that the need of the hour is to take steps on the liquidity front with deeper interest subvention support and continuation of interest equalisation scheme. Besides, addressing the Middle East geopolitical situation, Red Sea crisis challenges by ensuring availability of marine insurance and rationale i n c r e a s e i n f r e i g h t c h a r g e s The sector also needs easy & low cost of credit, marketing support and conclusion of some of the key FTAs with UK, Peru and Oman soon.
Carriers finally restructured networks with new rotations in view of the Cape routings : Alphaliner
LONDON: Alphaliner outlines the current capacity shortages in the trades between Asia and Europe and in doing so also reveals the extent of the potential overcapacity that could affect the industry if the Red Sea crisis is resolved.
The broker’s weekly report shows a chart with the capacity required for the trades to Europe via the Suez Canal in May last year and comparing that to the requirements a year later and the actual vessels deployed, showing a shortfall of 36 ships.
“Despite the fact that already 1.14 million teu of new capacity has been delivered this year so far, the members of the three mega-alliances still lacked 36 ships to fully staff their 25 Asia –Europe loops as of Friday 10 May,” said Alphaliner
However, should the Red Sea diversions end this month and Suez Canal transits resume, the carriers
would have some 54 vessels, of an average size of 14,150 teu, to redeploy, a total of around 764,100 teu.
Stefan Verberckmoes, an analyst at Alphaliner was recently quoted as saying: “Indeed, there would be a large overcapacity if the Red Sea gets solved. However, this is not expected to happen soon. Carriers have finally restructured their networks with new rotations in view of the Cape routings.”
The analyst added that another 2 million teu will be delivered this year, “which will help to reduce the current 10% shortage on Asia-Europe My analysis focused on the Far East –Europe trade only and the alliance services in particular.”
Verberckmoes also points out that extra tonnage is needed in services from India to Europe or from Asia to US East Coast, which will reduce the overcapacity equation, as will the 3% growth in volumes that is also expected.
“I hear from carriers that they expect a strong peak season, which means that the additional capacity is still more than welcome for time being,” added the analyst.
The current shortage of vessels in the trades, as of 10 May, 340 container ships were deployed in Asia–Europe services of the three main alliances, 36 short of the number needed for 25 loops, meaning thatlinesneedtocancel9 6%ofallweekly sailings According to Alphaliner data the situationvariesforeachalliance, withthe OceanAllianceshortof20ships,while2M and THE Alliance both require an additionaleightvessels.
2M, however, already operates 125 vessels compared to THE Alliance’s 110.
Vessel shortages for the European trades has already seen Maersk and MSC return to vessel sharing to help cope with the discrepancy in necessary capacity for the Cape diversions.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges launches the World's first methanol-powered tugboat
and an important step in the transition to a climate-neutral port by 2050 The project is being financed by the European research programme Horizon 2020 and is part of the FASTWATER project, which aims to demonstrate the feasibility of methanol as a sustainable fuel for the shipping industry
First methanol-powered tugboat
Methanol is one of the fuels of the future and produces lower emissions, an important factor in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges' ambition to be climate neutral by 2050. The world's first methanol-powered tugboat, the Methatug, was unveiled in Antwerp. Methanol can be produced from renewable sources, is a clean fuel and can be used for both brand-new ships and retrofits because it is liquid under ambient conditions. For the Methatug, the engines from an existing tugboat were converted into ‘dual fuel’ engines, which means that they run on a mixture of methanol and traditional fuel. The 30-metre-long tugboat has a traction force of 50 tons and can store 12.000 litres of methanol, enough for two weeks of tug work.
FASTWATER project
The Methatug is part of the European FASTWATER project, which aims to demonstrate the feasibility of methanol as a sustainable fuel for the shipping industry, and was financed by the European research and innovation programme Horizon 2020. In addition to Port of AntwerpBruges, various other partners from the FASTWATER consortium are involved in this project: the Swedish ship design agency ScandiNAOS, the Belgian engine manufacturer Anglo Belgian Corporation, the German company Heinzmann responsible for the methanol injectors, Ghent University for the emission monitoring programme and the Canadian methanol supplier Methanex during the trials. In the FASTWATER project, the conversions to methanol propulsion of a pilot boat in Sweden, a river cruise ship in Germany and a coastguard vessel in Greece are also elaborated. De Wit Bunkering will supply the Methatug with methanol via truck-to-ship bunkering at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges Nautical Operational Cluster (NOC).
Green eet and multi fuel port
This world premier forms part of a comprehensive greening programme for Port of Antwerp-Bruges' own fleet which strives to systematically integrate the most
environmentally friendly technologies available. So far, the Hydrotug 1, the first tugboat to run on hydrogen, and energyefficient RSD tugboats have already been added to the fleet. Another electrically powered tugboat will follow later this year, as the first in Europe.
As the fifth largest bunker port in the world, Port of Antwerp-Bruges also aims to become a full-fledged multi-fuel port, in which seagoing and inland vessels will be able to bunker, not only conventional fuels, but also alternative, low-carbon fuels, such as methanol, hydrogen or electricity. In early April, the first methanol bunkering with the deepsea vessel Ane Maersk took place in Antwerp, a new milestone in terms of this ambition.
Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of Port of AntwerpBruges: "Together with our partners, we are pioneering with innovative technologies for the transition to alternative and renewable energy sources. The Methatug is a new and essential step in our efforts to make our own fleet greener and become climate neutral by 2050. Thanks to projects such as this, we are paving the way and hope to be an example and a source of inspiration for other ports.”
Annick De Ridder, Vice-Mayor of the City of Antwerp and President of the Board of Directors of Port of Antwerp-Bruges: "The fact we are able to announce another world premier today in the field of clean energy is fantastic news for our port and for the shipping industry in general. Just like with the Hydrotug, the world's first hydrogen-powered tugboat, this project confirms our pioneering role in the field of energy transition The ecosystem of our port platform forms an ideal, large-scale testing ground for this."
Prof. Sebastian Verhelst, Project Coordinator FASTWATER: “Methanol has everything to become the fuel of the future and play a pioneering role in the greening of the shipping industry. Thanks to the expertise and efforts of the different partners from the consortium, we are now able to take important steps with the Methatug to demonstrate its feasibility.”
Methatug specications
• 11 meter width, 29.5 meter length
• Weight of 584 tons
• 50 ton bollard pull
• Storage of 12.000 litres of methanol
• Two ABC 8DAC dual fuel medium-speed engines.

CONCOR – CMD highlights its robust infrastructure to Maritime Stalwarts of Taiwan
Cont’d. from Pg. 3
He also highlighted the company ’s comprehensive logistics services, aiming to explore opportunities for mutually beneficial relationships.
The meetings were held with Mr. Kuang-hui Wu, President of Evergreen Marine Corporation (Taiwan) Ltd., Mr. Bryan Ma, Vice President of Wan Hai Lines Ltd , Mr. Richards Yeh, Executive Director of International Ocean Freight Forwarders & Logistics Association-Taiwan, and Mr. Jason Kuo, CEO of Panda Logistics Co., Ltd., focused on strengthening collaborations and exploring new opportunities for mutual benefits
During these interactions, Shri Swarup also p r o v i d e d a n o v e r v i e w o f C O N C O R ' s commitment to green logistics initiatives such as the adoption of LNG trucks. He also spoke about the MoUs signed with prominent stakeholders like Indraprastha Gas Ltd, IOCL, and NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam, which are aimed at facilitating the operation of LNG trucks and developing solar-based infrastructure at CONCOR’s terminals.
Further highlighting CONCOR's role in adopting technology for logistics, Shri Swarup pointed out the introduction of digital solutions to streamline operations. These include the launch of a logistics app designed for efficient first/last mile services,
management initiated at ICD Tughlakabad and plans to extend this AI solution to other terminals
Other technological advancements mentioned were KYCL (Know Your Container's Location) for real-time container tracking, automated billing for vendors, and the implementation of an e-Office, all contributing to enhanced productivity, customer-centric services and Logistics efficiency
