Sohar Port to explore Investment Commerce Ministry extends Opportunities in the Indian Market time limit for filing claims under SOHAR: SOHAR Port and Freezone, in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), has launched a series of five online webinars to explore opportunities between SOHAR and the Indian market. TMA scheme NEW DELHI: The Commerce Ministry recently extended the time limit for filing claims under the Transport Marketing Assistance (TMA) scheme for specified agricultural products. In March 2019, the government had announced the scheme for providing financial assistance for transport and marketing of agricultural products to boost exports of such commodities to certain countries in Europe and North America. Under the TMA plan, the government reimburses a certain portion of freight charges and provides assistance for Cont’d. Pg. 13 marketing of agricultural produce.

Kerala Port Minister moots cargo service to Lakshadweep COCHIN: Visiting the Cochin Port recently, a primary by a State Minister, Port Minister Ahamed Devarkovil mentioned there’s a necessity for a barge service to Lakshadweep to transport items like gasoline cylinders, and in addition a roll on-roll off (ro-ro) service between Kollam and Azheekkal ports. Ports would do nicely to have multimodal transport with the assistance of delivery transporting companies. “ O n c e Vi z h i n j a m h a s b e c o m e a n i n t e r n a t i o n a l transshipment gateway, all ports in Kerala, including the Cochin Port, could connect with one another for cargo movement, and Kerala Maritime Board could coordinate this,” he mentioned, urging the Cochin Port to suggest to the Union Shipping Ministry due assist for the coastal delivery incentive scheme being carried out by the State authorities.

Lift & Shift India Handles World Heaviest Reactor - 2300 MT Cont’d. from Pg. 1 Lift & Shift was contracted by Larsen & Toubro Heavy Engineering Division (L&T HED), Hazira for movement of 5 equipment including 3 critical reactors from their Hazira (Gujarat) yard to HPCL Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The scope of work involved movement of 5 equipment from L & T HED fabrication Yard to the Jetty in Hazira, Roll-on to the Barge, Barging from L & T jetty to Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) Jetty in Visakhapatnam covering 2100 nautical miles, Roll-off from Barge to HSL jetty and Road movement from HSL jetty to HPCL refinery. The equipment weight ranges from 650 MT to 2313 MT per piece. The length of the heaviest reactor was 72 m with width of 12.2 m and height 7.7m, the transport was done on 96 axles using 3 PPU (total of 768 tyres). The complete cargo was shipped in 3 voyages using Lift & Shift 280 class barge 2 voyages and a 330 Class barge 1 voyage from L arsen & Toubro Jetty to HSL jetty, Visakhapatnam. The critical and challenging was the last-leg movement from HSL jetty in Visakhapatnam to HPCL Refinery for moving 2760 MT including trailer weight the heaviest ever equipment
transport on roads of India. Due to the dimension of the job the road transport required dismantling of all road fixtures over 5 kms including shifting of power lines poles, complete removal of center dividers, even the walkways and other smaller fixtures on the road. Lift & Shift in consultation with the authorities decided for late night movement from HSL jetty HPCL Refinery in order to have less inconvenience or difficulties for the common public in view of Covid restrictions with regards to public gathering. Lift & Shift organized mobile light vans to lighten up the road as the entire 5 kms would have no street lights working due to power shutdown being taken. Lif t & Shif t thanked all the authorities, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, Andhra Pradesh Power Distribution Company and Local Police for their cooperation extended during the night movement. Lift & Shift’s expertise team was involved in meticulous planning from the beginning to optimize the land and marine movement from Larsen & Toubro fabrication facility to HPCL refinery which is one of the keys for successful execution of the project. Lift & Shift is known for safe and efficient delivery.

In addition, the number of containers handled rose by 1.9% to 1.9 million and the total vessels visiting the port rose by 13.7% to 843 vessels as the Port continues to expand operations.

Aegis Logistics and Royal Vopak of the Netherlands to form a major joint venture for LPG and chemical terminals in India MUMBAI / ROTTERDAM: Today, Aegis and Vopak announced that the companies have decided to join forces in India with the aim to grow together in the LPG, chemicals storage and handling business. The new partnership, Aegis Vopak Terminals Ltd (AVTL), will operate a network of terminals that are currently located in five strategic ports along the east and west coast of India. With a total capacity of around 960,000 m3, the partnership will become one of the largest independent tank storage companies for LPG and chemicals in India. LPG is earmarked by the Indian government to provide cleaner and safe cooking fuels for households. The partnership is well positioned for further growth, which targets mainly LPG and also chemicals and industrial terminal opportunities. This investment is another step for Vopak towards its strategy to allocate capital to grow in gas markets. “This joint venture with Vopak will accelerate the growth of Aegis in the terminals business and has the potential to allow Aegis to diversify into new areas of gas storage such as LNG and other
energy projects including renewables, in partnership with the world’s leading independent tank storage company. We expect the deal to be significantly earnings enhancing for Aegis shareholders due to the deployment into growth opportunities of the combined financial firepower of the two groups and management in the terminals business.” said Raj Chandaria, Chairman of Aegis Logistics Ltd. "This is an investment in a growth market and by joining forces with Aegis we aim to deliver growth over the next ten years in line with the new joint ventures and India’s ambition for LPG.” said Eelco Hoekstra, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Royal Vopak. “We are very excited for this new partnership. Commerce Ministry extends time limit for filing claims under TMA scheme Cont’d. from Pg. 1
“The claims for assistance under the TMA scheme for the quarters ending on March 31, 2020 and June 30, 2020 can be
filed up to September 30, 2021," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a public notice. DGFT comes under the commerce ministry.
The scheme covers freight and marketing assistance for export by air as well as sea (both normal and refrigerated cargo).
CONCOR records 35.35% rise in volumes handled during Q1FY22 N E W D E L H I : Container Corporation of India (Concor) has announced physical volumes handled for the first quarter ending
June 2021 (Q1FY22). The company handled a total volume of 9,91,746 TEUs in Q1FY22 rising by 35.35% compared to the previous year of the same quarter.
Of the total, the company handled 8,15,077 TEUs of Export Import increasing by 29.81% yoy. While, it handled DOM of 1,76,669 TEUs skyrocketing by a whopping 68.57% yoy.
India's services exports on rebound after COVID shock: Commonwealth Report LONDON: India's monthly services exports have largely rebounded after an initial COVID-19 shock, finds a new Commonwealth trade analysis released in London recently. The 2021 'Commonwealth Trade Review' concludes that the Commonwealth countries are estimated to have lost up to USD 345 billion worth of trade in 2020, including USD 60 billion in intra-Commonwealth trade. As a result of COVID-19, India's overall merchandise exports and imports are estimated to have declined by 11.4 per cent and 11.9 per cent, respectively, between March and November 2020. However, even pre-pandemic, a large
share of India's information and communications technology (ICT) services were exported via Mode 1 - or cross-border supply enabled through digital means - and thus were relatively more insulated from the adverse effects of the pandemic, the report said. "India is a major driver of intraCommonwealth trade and all parts of the Commonwealth need to work together if we are to recover swiftly and effectively from the COVID-19 crisis," said Baroness Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. "India along with all Commonwealth members can harness the 'Commonwealth advantage' to provide a
post-pandemic tailwind that supports a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable recovery," she said. The relatively high incidence of COVID-19 in India, in terms of numbers of infections and deaths, is a key explanatory factor for the trade figures, based on the Commonwealth analysis of raw World Trade Organisation (WTO) and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data. The abrupt recession caused by COVID-19 further dampened India's trade growth, but it found that monthly services exports have "largely rebounded after an initial COVID-19 shock in the first half of 2019, supported by exports of ICT-related services".
Multipurpose vessel charter rates surpass 2008 peak with further to go : Drewry LONDON: The continued easing of lockdown restrictions across the globe, combined with the capacity constraints in other sectors, mean that charter hire rates for the multipurpose and heavylift fleet are expected to continue to rise from their current peak for the remainder of t h e y e a r, a c c o r d i n g t o D r e w r y ’ s Multipurpose Shipping Forecaster published recently by global shipping consultancy Drewry. According to Drewry’s Multipurpose Time Charter Index, average annual one year period rates for July are expected to be some 65% higher than July 2020, almost 50% higher than July 2019 and surpass their last peak of 2008 (see chart). Drewry’s Multipurpose Time Charter Index is a weighted average of time charter rates across the breakbulk and heavylift fleet which is updated monthly and published free of charge on the Drewry web site. Breakbulk and heavylift charter rates have seen historic lows over the last ten years, exacerbated by container carriers
moving further and further into this sector. When utilisation is weak in the competing bulk and container sectors, breakbulk cargo is stuffed into containers and project cargo carried by a wider variety of vessels. This increased competition has kept rates weak for much of the past decade, however currently the reverse is true. Capacity constraints in the competing sectors due to container equipment shortages, port congestion and the release of pent-up demand post the global pandemic, have combined to provide a perfect storm for the multipurpose fleet. Drewry expects demand for multipurpose and heavylift tonnage to rise by some 11.5% in 2021 compared to 2020, before slowing to a steady 3.5% per year to 2025. This strengthening demand has been led by the recovery in global container traffic in 2021 due to a rise of over 7% for dry cargo global trade post the pandemic. China’s strengthening economic activity is driving crude steel production in the region and consequently both manufacturing and bulk demand.
Add to this the US fiscal stimulus and improved health conditions that are producing an unprecedented rebound in consumer spending and housing activity in the US. Inevitably there are still some caveats around our forecasts. In particular the speed of the global recovery is dependent on both the vaccine rollout and the extent of economic policy supporting growth in any given region. This is prompting increasingly divergent recovery paths, widening the gap between developed and developing countries, compared to prepandemic expectations. For the multipurpose sector, this divergent recovery could have a weakening effect as the need for breakbulk and project cargo tends to be led by renewed construction and investment in the developing countries. However, Drewry’s optimism for this sector is significantly improved, even from just three months ago, and we believe the current strength in the market will ride out the remainder of the year and beyond.
Customs duty waiver for anti-fungal drug, Covid testing kits NEW DELHI: With the third wave of Covid around the corner, the Union government on Tuesday exempted basic customs duty on imports of specified API (active pharma ingredient)/excipients for Amphotericin B till August 31 and raw materials for manufacturing Covid test kits till September 30. APIs for anti-fungus drug Amphotericin B attract 10-15% basic customs duty while the rates vary for raw materials for testing kits. “This (customs duty removal) is a well
thought exemption being granted by the Indian government to fight the Covid crisis and is a step to make the domestic industry self-reliant while fighting the pandemic,” said Abhishek Jain, Tax Partner, EY. Among other Covid-related relief measures announced on June 12, the Goods and Service Tax (GST) Council had exempted Amphotericin B from 5% GST and slashed the GST rate to 5% from 12% on Covid testing kits. The latest move will help bring relief to
common man by way of more affordable medicines/medical gear amid threat of third wave of Covid-19 pandemic. After Covid-19 broke out last year, India has seen a steady rise in fungal infections also. On June 12, the GST Council slashed rates for Covid drugs, testing kits, medical equipment and even ambulances to provide relief to people amid the pandemic, but kept the tax on vaccines unchanged at the lowest slab of 5%. The new rates will remain effective till September 30, 2021.

China-India trade keeps high growth in H1, but down from January-May gure BEIJING: China’s trade with India in the first half of this year showed an upward trajectory but edged down 7 percentage points from the JanuaryMay period, probably due to the easing COVID-19 situation in India and a decline in iron core trade, experts said. China’s foreign trade with India grew 62.7 percent from January to June in dollar terms compared with the same period last year, making China-India trade growth the second highest among China’s trade with other trading partners, after China-South Africa, continuing a growing momentum seen in the first five months, according to data from the General Administration of Customs (GAC). China’s exports and imports to India reached $57.48 billion in the first six months of the year, with imports increasing 69.6 percent year-on-year and exports growing 60.4 percent year-onyear. The increase in bilateral trade is largely spurred to an extent by India importing medical goods from China to combat the second wave of the pandemic, Zhao Gancheng, a research fellow at the Shanghai Institute for International Studies said. According to the data released by the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, China exported more than 26,000 ventilators and oxygen generators, more than 15,000 monitors, and nearly 3,800 tons of medical materials and drugs to India in April. The growth of two -way trade between China and India, however, edged down slightly from that in the January-May period which saw the bilateral trade growth hit 70.1 percent in US dollar term to $48.16 billion, with Chinese exports to India up 64.1 percent and imports up 90.2 percent on yearly basis. The decline in the growth rate is probably due to an easing pandemic situation in India and a drop in iron ore trade between the two countries, Liu Zongyi, secretar y-general of the Research Center for China-South Asia Cooperation at Shanghai Institutes for International Studies told on Tuesday. From January to April this year, China imported a total of 20.28 million tons of iron ore from India, an increase of nearly 66 percent from the same period of last year, accounting for nearly 90 percent of India’s total iron ore export, according to market data. “The growth of China’s iron ore imports from India in the January-April periods triggered worries from steel
manufacturers in India on the shortage of domestic iron ore, who have called for a reduction in exports to China,” Liu said, “On the other hand, it may also be due to a reduction in China’s imports due to sufficient domestic supply.” In the first six months of this year, China imported goods worth $14.7 billion from India and exported that $42.6 billion to India. If this momentum can be maintained in the second half of the year, China is expected to maintain the position as India’s largest trading partner, Zhao predicted. However, it should be noted that this wave of growth may lead to further expansion of India’s trade deficit with China and promote the county to take measures to suppress Chinese products from entering the Indian market as it did in the past years after seeing a widening trade deficit with China, Zhao said. Bilateral trade in 2020 declined 5.6 percent to $87.6 billion, the lowest since 2017, data from Chinese customs showed. But even amid such a complicated environment, China still overtook the US to become India’s largest trading partner in 2020, according to a recent report in Global Times.
India to sign MoU with Bangladesh to export 10 lakh bales of cotton annually NEW DELHI: The Indian Government will soon sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bangladesh to export 10 lakh bales of cotton every year. “The MoU will facilitate a governmentto-government transaction. The memorandum will be signed soon,” said Pradeep Kumar Agarwal, Chairman-
c u m - M a n a g i n g D i r e c t o r, C o t t o n Corporation of India Limited (CCI). The CCI will handle the exports to Bangladesh, Agarwal said. “The MoU was scheduled to be signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh earlier this year. But, due to elections in States such as Bengal,
the MoU could not be signed,” he said. Bangladesh is one of the largest buyers of Indian cotton for its expanding textile industry, particularly garments. The neighbouring country has always wanted India to ensure uninterrupted supply of cotton, and the MoU is a step in that direction.
