JN Port Authorities hails BMCT Container Lines set to topple quarterly profit records (again) for its swift co-operation N AV I M U M B A I : J N P o r t recently hailed the PSA Mumbai (Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals) for their efforts to facilitate unobstructed movement of medical supplies to help the Nation turn the corona tide. The PSA Mumbai Terminal at JN Port handled 4 containers of medical supplies in the vessel MV COSCO THAILAND with a Cont’d. Pg. 6 total quantity of 25.216 MT.
CHATTANOOGA: Maersk and other ocean carriers posted their best numbers ever in the first quarter, but those records are almost certain to be quickly eclipsed. Early disclosures from carriers confirm that the second quarter will be an even bigger blockbuster for liners. During the first three months of this year, congestion negatively impacted volumes for several liners, yet surging rates more than offset any decline in loadings. Cont’d. Pg. 17

Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurates Medical Oxygen PSA units at ‘Sir T Hospital’, Bhavnagar in presence of Sarbananda Sonowal Deendayal Port Trust through its CSR has installed 2 nos. of large Medical Oxygen PSA units at ‘Sir T Hospital’
Cont’d. from Pg. 3 Shri Sonowal said that Prime Minister has given the agenda of development of the country and we need to work together and round the clock to achieve this goal. He said the facility installed at Sir T Hospital will help in the fight against Corona. The Deendayal Port Trust through its Corporate Social Responsibility has installed 02 nos. of large Medical Oxygen PSA units at ‘Sir T Hospital’, at the total cost of Rs. 2.53 Crores. The installed PSA oxygen generator unit is of having a capacity of 1000 litres per minute each, i.e., 60,000 liters/hr. at 5-6 bar pressure of each unit totalling 1,20,000 which can be utilized for the treatment of COVID as well as other patients at the hospital. The system will eliminate the hardship of frequent refilling the cylinders for treatment of patients, and will ensure a smooth and continuous oxygen supply to the hospital. The PSA Oxygen generation unit generates pure oxygen gas by the continuous process of pressure swing adsorption & desorption methods through imported Molecular oxygen sieves in pressurized & de-pressurized states in the unit and finally delivers oxygen of minimum 93% purity. Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Union MoS for MoPSW and Tourism, Shri Shantanu Thakur, Union MoS for MoPSW, Smt. Vibhavariben Dave, MoS for Women & Child Development, Government of Gujarat, Dr. Bharatiben Dhirubhai Shiyal, MP, Bhavnagar, Ms. Kirti Danidhariya, Mayor, Bhavnagar and Dr. Sanjeev Ranjan along with the senior officials of the Deendayal Port Trust were present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Mansukh Mandaviya said, “This facility is dedicated to the people of Bhavnagar. Similar such facilities inaugurated recently would help the country in times of crisis.” Reiterating Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision for the country, Shri Mansukh Mandaviya said that the country is working in the spirit of Lok-Bhagidari through a “whole of society” approach to keeping the country safe from COVID. The Union Health Minister noted the cooperation people showed during lockdowns in maintaining COVID Appropriate Behaviour and social distancing norms to beat the first COVID-19 wave. “It is an evidence of sheer cooperation among different stakeholders from both public and private sector that we ramped up our oxygen capacity that was mere 4000 MT (metric tonne) to more than 12,000 MT in a short span of time’, he stated. On the continuing challenge of COVID-19 in front of us, Shri Mandaviya mentioned that “We have learnt a lot from the second wave like oxygen supply, hospital beds and medicines. We have now ensured adequate funds in every district for buying critical care medical requirements in an emergency. The Cabinet has recently approved Rs. 23,000 crore package for Covid-19 emergency response. We have made adequate provisions for paediatric care in all hospitals to provide the most effective healthcare for children. We are also developing a system of buffer stock at State and centre level that can be used in case of any health crisis. Thus, a comprehensive plan and capacity building in next 6 months is being taken up through this COVID package.”
JN Port Authorities hails BMCT for its swift co-operation
Japan’s 1st Containership recognized for its historical contribution to Maritime Transportation Efciency TOKYO: Hakone Maru, a container c a r r i e r f o r m e r l y owned and operated by NYK, has been recognized by the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE) as “Japan's first new container carrier that realized efficient maritime transportation." This honor is given to vessels that have historical, academic, and technical value, promote public understanding, and are seen as symbols of cultural heritage for future generations. Another NYK vessel, Hikawa Maru, a historic ocean liner permanently berthed as a museum ship in Yokohama, was certified in 2018.
Hakone Maru, Japan's first containership, was completed at the Kobe shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in August 1968. Through advancements in the ship’s hull form, main engine, and propeller, the vessel was able to realize a significant improvement in the efficiency of maritime transportation. In fact, the ship’s enhanced speed shortened the trans-Pacific route round trip from 80 days to about 30 days. On February 3, NYK released the NYK Group ESG Story, which aims to further integrate ESG into the company’s management strategy. We will continue our efforts to preserve historical materials and contribute to the availability of maritime history to future generations through the NYK Maritime Museum, a related facility.

Container Lines set to topple quarterly profit records (again) Cont’d. from Pg. 3 Even though congestion worsened in the second quarter — due to the Suez Canal accident and the COVID outbreak in Yantian, China — freight rates were much stronger than in the first quarter, setting the stage for new highs in revenues and profits. OOCL OOCL, a division of China’s COSCO, revealed data on Q2 liftings and revenues. American Shipper analyzed the changes versus the first quarter and calculated O O C L’ s r e v e n u e p e r t w e n t y - f o o t equivalent unit (TEU). The carrier’s total liftings dropped 1.5% quarter-on-quarter, including a 4.2% decline in the congestion-stricken transPacific. However, revenue per TEU jumped 16.6% in the second quarter versus the first, to $1,780 per TEU. There was a particularly sharp rise — 20.6% — in revenue per TEU in the trans-Pacific. As in the first quarter, rate tailwinds trumped congestion headwinds. OOCL’s overall shipping revenue in the second quarter rose 14.9% compared to the first three months of the year, to $3.47 billion. COSCO Group The COSCO Group announced preliminary Q2 profits recently. COSCO disclosed that first-half revenues will be approximately RMB 37.093 billion ($5.7 billion). This means that Q2 2021 net
profit will be RMB 21.641 billion, up 40% from the previous record period in Q1 2021. During the first half of this year alone, COSCO will post profits that are 3.7 times the profits earned in full-year 2020. Matson After market close on Thursday, Matson (NYSE: MATX) released preliminary results that trounced analyst expectations. The consensus forecast was for Q2 2021 net income of $2.21 per share. Matson said that net income will be $156.9 million-$163.6 million or $3.58-$3.73 per share — 62%-69% above what analysts expected. “ We WAY u n d e r e s t i m a t e d t h e earnings capacity of Matson once again,” admitted Stifel analyst Ben Nolan in a client note. Matson CEO Matt Cox stated, “Currently, in the trans-Pacific trade lane, supply chain congestion continues and consumption trends remain elevated. We expect these conditions to remain in place and lead to a high level of demand at least until Lunar New Year in the first quarter of 2022.” Evergreen Taiwan-based Evergreen has not prereported profits, but it has just posted its monthly operating revenues through June. Last month, Evergreen posted alltime-high operating revenues of 37.72
billion New Taiwan dollars (NT$). For Q2 2021, operating revenues totaled NT$99.89 billion ($3.6 billion), up 11% from Q1 2021. Carriers’ public relations decit U.K. consultancy Drewry estimated that the ocean carrier sector as a whole could post aggregate profits of $80 billion$100 billion this year. “Carriers’ only account in deficit is public relations,” said Drewry. “Lines are in danger of being cast as profiteering villains, unsympathetic to the needs of their customers.” Recently, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Biden administration will use an executive order and urge the Federal Maritime Commission “to confront consolidation and perceived anticompetitive pricing” in ocean shipping. According to Stifel analyst Ben Nolan, “From our perspective … ocean shipping pricing has been consistent with overall market supply dynamics. Furthermore, virtually all large container shipping companies are not U.S. domiciled, listed, etc., so there is very little influence that could be brought to bear.” However, Nolan warned, “Despite no meaningful means of intervention, we do expect the risk of increased regulatory oversight to be negative for containershipping equities.”
APEDA inks MoU with NAFED for strengthening export linkage of Farmer Cooperatives & FPOs NEW DELHI: For harnessing exports potential of agricultural and processed food products of cooperatives as well Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED). According to the MoU, the key areas of cooperation include facilitating APEDA registered exporters getting assistance under all the Govt. of India schemes implemented through NAFED. The MoU also envisages ensuring sustainability and growth of exports by Cooperatives by addressing issues such as technology, skill, quality products and market access. The collaborations between APEDA, which functions under Ministr y of Commerce & NAFED, registered under the Multi State Co-operative Societies Act, also support engaging Cooperatives involved in agricultural production for improving the quality of agri-produce and its consolidation for better price realization to the farmers. APEDA would facilitate exports by the Cooperatives, FPO’s, partners and associates identified and promoted by NAFED. APEDA and NAFED will also facilitate participation of Farmers’ Cooperatives in global trade including B2B & B2C fairs to be organized in India and abroad and also to mutually cooperate in international business development & promotions. The MoU also entails providing
assistance towards capacity building of Cooperative Societies, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) for their social & environmental compliances and skilling as per international standards. Both the organisations would organize awareness programs Skill Development Programmes and Workshops at Regional, State and National levels. APEDA and NAFED have also agreed to work in close coordination towards sustainable Cluster development of the clusters in various States notified under Agri Export policy. The MoU was signed by Dr. M. Angamuthu, Chairman APEDA and Mr. Sanjeev Kumar Chadha, Managing Director, NAFED. The MoU was signed for utilising both the organisations’ expertise by mutually working together to synergize the activities in the interest of agriculture and allied sectors for bringing better value to the stakeholders. APEDA has been focusing on collaborative approach to bring synergy with number of organisations and institutions having inherent professional and specialised expertise in different areas for capacity building of various stakeholders and providing solutions for addressing some of the identified interventions for the development of Agriculture and its export enhancement in consonance with the objectives set under Agri Export Policy (AEP) announced by Government of India in 2018. AEP was framed with a focus on agriculture export oriented production, export promotion, better price realization to farmer and synchronization within
policies and programmes of Government of India. It focuses on “Farmers’ Centric Approach” for improved income through value addition at source itself to help minimize losses across the value chain. The exports policy therefore suggests to adopt the approach of developing product specific clusters in different agro climatic zones of the country to help in dealing with various supply side issues viz., soil nutrients management, higher productivity, adoption of market oriented variety of crop, use of Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) etc. APEDA has been engaged with State Governments for the implementation of AEP. The States of Maharashtra, U.P., Kerala, Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Manipur, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, M.P., Mizoram and Meghalaya have finalized the State specific Action Plan for exports while the action plans of other States are at different stages of finalization. At present, NAFED is creating a network of honey FPOs across Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Around 65 FPOs will be part of honey corridor linking north-west to northeastern regions. NAFED is aiming at bringing all the FPOs associated with honey production for creating requisite infrastr ucture under the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission, NAFED’s subsidiary Federation of Indian FPOs and Aggregators (FIFA) is currently partnering with FPOs and private sector.

E-way bill generation gathers pace in July NEW DELHI: E-way bill generation for goods transportation has gathered pace in July, indicating a graded pick-up in economic recovery, as the impact of the second Covid wave wanes. In the first 11 days of July, the average daily eway bill generation stood at 19.24 lakh, 5.6% higher than the average for June and 49% higher than the May-level. Between July 1 and 11, as many as 2.12 crore e-way bills were generated. Higher e-way bill generation will reflect in goods and ser vice tax (GST) revenues.
Gross GST collections, after remaining above the Rs 1-lakh-crore mark for eight months in a row, came in at Rs 92,849 crore in June (May transactions), reflecting the blow to the economy from a localised lockdown. Thanks to the reduction in Covid-19 cases and easing of the lockdowns, e-way bills generation by businesses rose to 5.5 crore in June, from 3.99 crore in May, indicating a smart recovery of trade and business. About 5.9 crore e-way bills were generated in April.
With the impact of the second Covid wave waning and vaccination drive making progress, some parts of the economy are expected to look up from July. In recent months, the government’s GST revenue has been robust, thanks to steps taken to curb evasion, increased compliance and also a shift of business a w a y f r o m t h e i n f o r m a l s e c t o r. A nascent economic recovery that appears to have been quickly disrupted by the pandemic’s second surge, also helped.
India’s coal import rises 20 % in May; volumes may be subdued in monsoon MUMBAI: India’s coal import rose 20.4 per cent to 19.92 million tonnes (MT) in the month of May. The country had imported 16.54 MT of coal in May last fiscal, according to data compiled by mjunction Services. “On a year-on-year basis, however, India’s coal and coke imports in May 2021 were up 20.4 per cent as against 16.54 MT clocked in May 2020,” it said. Import volumes of dry-fuel, it said, are expected to remain subdued in the ongoing monsoon season on account of lower demand, firm prices and high freight rates.
India’s coal import also rose 25.4 per cent to 42.19 MT in the first two months of the ongoing fiscal, against 33.63 MT of coal imported in the corresponding period of previous financial year, it said. Of the total import in May, non-coking coal was at 13.64 MT, against 10.54 MT imported in May last financial year. Coking coal import was at 4.41 MT, up against 3.18 MT imported in May last fiscal. During April-May, non-coking coal import was at 28.96 MT as compared to
22.82 MT imported during April-May period of the last financial year. Coking coal imports were recorded at 9.15 MT, higher than 6.41 MT imported during April-May of previous financial year. “The firm prices in the seaborne market coupled with higher availability of domestic coal led to a drop in imports in May on a monthly basis. Import volumes are expected to remain subdued in the ongoing monsoon season due to lower demand, firm prices and high freight rates,” mjunction Services MD and CEO Vinaya Varma said.
Bangladeshi Vessels set sail using it as a trade route between Assam-Bangladesh NEW DELHI: During this critical pandemic period, as many as seven Bangladeshi vessels visited Dhubri using Indian waterways as a trade route. The Inland Waterways Authority (IWA) of India has begun the International Trade from the river port of Panchughat in Dhubri town as a positive sign. All seven Bangladeshi vessels are fully
loaded at the Dhubri wharf to transport some tons of rocks exported from Bhutan which will be sailing soon for Bangladesh through the river Brahmaputra. According to Nurul Islam, Bangladesh Vessel Sailor, once the ship’s crew has completed all relevant papers, the authorities will allow the vessel’s crew members to sail from Panchughat,
Dhubri, India to Chilmari River Port in Bangladesh. On July 12, 2019, the river port of Dhuburi’s Panchughat, which was a significant river port during British rule, was restored for international trade, ushering in a new horizon. This was the beginning of the International Trade by river from Assam and the North East.
India poised for double-digit growth this fiscal; disinvestment climate looks better: Niti Aayog VC Rajiv Kumar NEW DELHI: With India’s stor y remaining “very strong”, the economy will register a double-digit growth in the current fiscal and the disinvestment climate also looks better, said Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar. He also asserted that the country is prepared in a far better manner in case there is a COVID wave as states have also their own lessons from the previous two waves. “We are now hopefully getting past our (COVID-19) pandemic… and the economic activities will be strengthened as we get into the second half of this (fiscal) year given what I have seen for example various indicators, including the mobility indicators,” Kumar told PTI in an interview. The Indian economy has been adversely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and the recovery has been relatively sluggish in the wake of the second COVID wave. Against this backdrop, the Niti Aayog Vice Chairman exuded confidence that the economic recovery will be “very strong” and those agencies or organisations which have revised their GDP estimates downwards for this fiscal may have to revise them upwards
again. “Because, I expect India’s GDP growth this (fiscal) year would be in double digits,” he said. The economy contracted by 7.3 per cent in the financial year ended March 31, 2021. Among rating agencies, S&P Global Ratings has cut India’s growth forecast for the current fiscal to 9.5 per cent from 11 per cent earlier, while Fitch Ratings has slashed the projection to 10 per cent from 12.8 per cent estimated earlier. The downward revisions were mainly due to slowing recovery post second COVID wave. Indicating the possibility of a strong rebound, the Reserve Bank has pegged economic growth at 9.5 per cent in the current fiscal that ends on March 31, 2022. Asked when private investments will pick up, Kumar said in some sectors like steel, cement and real estate, significant investment in capacity expansion is happening already. In the consumer durable sector, it might take longer because consumers might feel a little hesitant due to uncertainty on account of the pandemic, he said. “Full-fledged
private investment recovery, we should expect by the third quarter of this (fiscal) year”. Responding to a query on concerns over a possible third COVID wave, Kumar said the government is much better prepared in case such a situation comes up. “I think the government is far better prepared now to face the third COVID wave, if at all it does come up… I feel the impact of the third wave on the economy will be much weaker than it was during the second wave and the beginning of the first wave,” he said. According to Kumar, the government’s preparation is very significant and also the states have learned their own lessons. Recently, the government announced an additional Rs 23,123 crore funding, mainly aimed at ramping up health infrastructure. Making a case for stepping up bor rowing, Kumar mentioned about agencies like the IMF, the World Bank and the ADB recommending that one should not worry too much about the size of the deficit because of the special circumstances the pandemic has created.

Adani Port board plans fund raising Today AHMEDABAD: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) on Friday announced that its board will meet on Wednesday (14 July) to consider raising upto $750 million through issuance of US$ denominated foreign currency bonds. The board of APSEZ will meet on
Wednesday (14 July 2021), to consider raising funds by way of issuance of US$ denominated foreign currency bonds which may be issued in one or more tranches, in India or overseas. The instrument may be listed in any one or more stock exchanges in India or overseas, for refinancing of existing borrowing. The total amount for fund raising
will not exceed $750 million and the fundraising will be on a private placement basis or otherwise, to any persons, entities, bodies corporate, companies, banks, financial institutions under applicable laws. APSEZ, a part of globally diversified Adani Group, has evolved from a port company to ports and logistics platform for India.
US President confronts consolidation, unfair pricing in Container Shipping WA S H I N G T O N : T h e B i d e n administration has issued a new executive order tackling the consolidation in the container shipping industry as well as anti-competitive pricing, among others. Over the past few years, the container shipping industry consolidated into a small number of giant foreign-owned lines and alliances, which can disadvantage American exporters, the White House statement reads. In the Executive Order on
Promoting Competition in the American Economy, President Joe Biden has encouraged the US Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) to “ensure vigorous enforcement against shippers charging American exporters exorbitant charges”. Specifically, the order comes as the President wants to promote competition in the US economy and enable faster economic growth. In the liner shipping sector, the global marketplace has rapidly
consolidated. In 2000, the ten largest shipping companies controlled 12% of the market. Today, it is more than 80%, leaving domestic manufacturers who need to export goods at these large foreign companies’ mercy. This has let powerful container shippers charge exporters exorbitant fees for the time their freight was sitting waiting to be loaded or unloaded. These fees, called “detention and demurrage charges,” can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Suez Canal annual revenue hits record $5.84 bn despite Ever Given blockage crisis CAIRO: Egypt’s Suez Canal revenue increased to $5.84 billion in its 2020-21 fiscal year (July-June), the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) announced. “The revenues of the Suez Canal, during the fiscal year 2020/2021 recorded the highest annual revenue in the history of the canal amounting to $5.84, compared to $5.72 billion during the 2019/2020 fiscal y e a r, ” t h e h e a d o f t h e a u t h o r i t y, Lieutenant- General Osama Rabie, revealed. What is more, the canal’s revenue in the first six months of this year increased to about $3 billion compared with $2.76 billion in the same period
last year, as revealed by the port authority. Specifically, some 9,763 ships had passed through the waterway in the first six months of the year, two percent more than the same period last year while about 19,000 ships passed in 2020, an average of over 50 a day, the SCA stated. “The flexible marketing and pricing policies pursued by the authority succeeded in maintaining the rates of ships crossing the canal,” Rabie also noted. “The granted reductions played a prominent role in achieving a major boom in the increase in transit rates of LNG ships, containerships, car carriers and dry
bulk ships during the period from January to June 2021.” “LNG carriers increased by 24%, and containerships increased by 9.7%. Car carriers increased … by 27.8%, and dry bulk vessels increased by 5% during that period.” The increase comes despite the various challenges including the COVID19 pandemic and the grounding incident of containership Ever Given. The 20,000 TEU containership Ever Given, which run aground in March 2021, steamed away several days ago, after its Japanese owners reached a compensation deal with the canal authority.
Economy treads cautiously optimistic on pent-up demand: ASSOCHAM NEW DELHI: After a tough first quarter, the Indian economy is finding demand back on the back of a strong level of activities in construction -related business, consumer durables like airconditioners, refrigerators and other electrical gadgets and rural segments of the fastmoving consumer goods. Even domestic travel and tourism is witnessing an unleash of pent-up demand, giving a pleasant surprise, as per an ASSOCHAM assessment. The ASSOCHAM note avoided giving any numbers to the growth projections although, both first and second quarters of 2021-22 would be far better than the comparable period of the last fiscal. ''Although, hazarding a guess in the middle of a global pandemic is not desirable, last 2-3 weeks have been quite encouraging in terms of unlocking of Covid-19 restrictions in most of the states, leading to restoration of trade, pick-up in industrial activities and inventory going
down," ASSOCHAM Secretary General Mr Deepak Sood said. Mr Sood said, " While we remain as anxious as all right thinking citizens about visible lapses in the Covid appropriate behaviour, some of popular travel destinations for summer months are witnessing rush of tourists. We would urge the citizens as also the businesses to strictly adhere to the prescribed behaviour like social distancing, mask wearing, sanitation. We cannot afford to have another wave of pandemic and must do all it takes to prevent it". The ASSOCHAM feedback suggests that construction activities which were suspended from the middle of April have resumed in several sectors like road building, repairs and maintenance and residential projects. '' Average city dwellers, especially in the upper middle class and affluent segments have taken up their pending construction and repair or upgradation of their homes. The Work From Home (WFH), which is being increasingly adopted across different
sectors, has created additional demand for furniture and fixtures at homes, including computer hardware. Despite increase in the fuel prices, the use of private vehicles over public transport is adding to the fuel consumption, while the automobile production and sale remains constrained by external issues like global shortages of microchips and semiconductors. "We expect the demand for farm equipment, machinery and tractors to remain robust and may pick up traction after the Monsoon season", the chamber note stated. ''What gives us a great relief is that the informal sectors, which remain the lifeline of the economy and the people, are returning. We feel reassured when we see masons, electricians, car mechanics, or roadside eateries coming back. Eventually, the informal sector seeps in and gels well with the formal economy, giving us the kind of growth needed for meeting the national aspiration'', Mr Sood said. Migrant workers are fast returning to cities and industrial hubs.

Inter-port competition slowing cargo growth, feel experts MUMBAI: Slowing cargo growth and lower capacity utilisation have intensified inter-port competition, putting pressure on pricing, say port operators and industry experts. In FY21, the total consolidated cargo handled by Indian ports was around 1,247 million tonnes (mt), a decline of 5.4 per cent from Fy20. Energy-related commodities especially thermal coal, crude and petroleum products witnessed the highest decline in volumes. The cargo handled by the Centre-owned major ports declined 4.6 per cent to 673 mt from 705 mt in FY20, according to the Indian Ports Association (IPA), a body representing the major ports. The overseas cargo handled at major ports decreased by 2.6 per cent in FY21 to 524 mt from 539 mt in FY20. Coastal cargo handled at the major ports in FY21 decreased by 11.4 per cent to 148 mt from 167 mt during FY20. Non-major ports (those owned by the States and given to private firms) handled 575 mt in FY21, a contraction of 6.2 per cent over FY20 volumes of 614 mt, according to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The overseas cargo handled at non-major ports during FY21 decreased by 4.3 per cent to 500 mt from 523 mt in FY20. The coastal cargo handled at non-major ports during FY21 decreased by 17.3 per cent to 75 mt from 91 mt in FY20. Bucking the trend of many years, major ports gained a market share of 0.4 per cent in FY21. The major ports have a capacity of 1,534 mt while that of nonmajor ports is 910 mt. At the FY21 cargo levels, the capacity utilisation of major ports was about 44 per cent while that at nonmajor ports was around 63 per cent. “Fy21 resulted in almost 5% ports volume reduction at a panIndia level, which resulted in lower ports capacity utilisation across the sector. Lower capacity utilisation increased inter-port competition for cargo and (put) pressure on pricing,” Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) said in its annual report
for FY21. The firm’s network of ports handled 247.28 mt of cargo in FY21 compared to a capacity of 480 mt with a utilisation of 51.5 per cent. “Increased competition could affect growth and margins,” it said. Port industry executives said that erratic demand patterns could hurt port utilisation and revenue predictability. “In sync with the overall weak growth in EXIM trade, the port volumes in India have not seen a robust growth. Despite the good potential to bolster cargo volumes, Indian ports have not seen remarkable growth in recent years,” said an industry consultant. Through initiatives such as the ‘Sagarmala’ programme and investment in private ports, the country has already built adequate port cargo handling capacity. “In the recent past, the growth in Indian port volumes has remained subdued, where cargo volumes have not matched capacity additions,” he added. The oversupply of capacity has translated into a substantial regional over-capacity, which has emerged as one of the key concerns for the port industry. “The resulting inter-port competitions have become challenging, leading port operators to rethink business strategies. For example, over capacities in container terminals at the Chennai port cluster (ports of Chennai, Kattupalli, Ennore and Krishnapatnam) could result in stiff competition for common hinterland container cargo,” APSEZ, India’s biggest private port operator, said. Port infrastructure aside, there are challenges on the commodity front also as the government harps on local production of thermal coal and fertilisers, particularly urea, reducing the demand for importing these commodities. Agri commodities could also face a downside. “Inter-port competition with similar physical performance parameters could mean more bargaining powers to customers,” APSEZ added.
BOT operators seek policy reforms to promote Atma Nirbhar Bharat NEW DELHI: India has forever held a strategic advantage due to its well-established marine ports and to unlock the export potential to achieve the dream of building a $5 trillion economy, some of the PPP concessions at the major ports handling single commodity have appealed to newly-appointed Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for policy interventions and that their license should be converted to handle multiple commodities. These private terminal operators have requested the newly chaired Shipping Minister to review decade old policies towards attaining the dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat. With the newly granted commercial mining license for 50 coal blocks, the imports of coal have declined since the auction has enhanced domestic coal sufficiency but on the other hand, single commodity handling terminals importing in the country are struggling to survive due to low import volumes arising out of government policies discouraging imports. This has started to affect the financial viability of BOT operators as the volume of imports have got reduced and available storage yards are choked due to less evacuation. BOT operators are currently limited to handling only coal which is classified as ‘Stressed Assets’ due to under-utilization of the
installed capacities. In the same context, Indian Private Ports and Terminals Association (IPPTA) had written to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) few months back, appealing for urgent policy interventions to maximize the capacity utilisation and efficiency of single cargo handling terminals. Of late, there have been significant market disruptions hampering the functioning of these Terminals. It is difficult to manage risk due to Court Orders banning the import/export of cargo, government policies discouraging imports and significant disruptions in market conditions etc. Examples worthwhile for consideration are PPP projects such as Adani Vizag Port coal handling terminal, Visakhapatnam Port, Steal Iron ore terminal Pvt. Ltd, New Mangalore Port and Chennai Bunkering Terminal Pvt. Ltd, Chennai Port which were under termination process whereas Vedanta owned Vizag General Cargo berth Pvt. Ltd, Vishakhapatnam Port is struggling to survive due to low import volumes. Over the years, marine ports have played a key role in enhancing the country’s role as a global player. If restrictions on handling only one commodity are lifted from these private operators, they can play a key role in strengthening the economy further.
Swifter recovery expected from the second wave: CII CEOs Poll NEW DELHI: CII CEOs Poll of 119 top Corporates indicate swifter economic recovery from the impact of the second wave. “The deadly second wave has not affected much of the economic activities as the lockdowns were largely designed to limit social gathering and this has helped limit the impact of second wave on economic growth when compared to the first wave”, said Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII. About 59 % of the CEOs polled expect the recovery in sales to be better than in the first wave for their companies, while 46% of them expressed a similar trend for their respective industry sectors. Vaccination holds the key to mitigating the impact of the second wave on economic activity and boosting consumer sentiment. Encouragingly, Indian businesses are making concerted efforts to vaccinate their employees as reflected by the poll results which reveal that 55% of the of employees of the polled firms have been vaccinated with at least the first dose of the vaccine. Assessing the consumer demand for their sectors, 49% of the CEOs expect consumer demand to be better in the first half of 2021-22 when compared to the same period in 2019-20. Similarly, 72% of the CEOs expect private investments to be better in first half of the current fiscal year when compared to the same period in 2019-20. As many as 62% of the corporate leaders confirmed that their firm
was compelled to scale back operations during the second wave. Due to the scaling back of operations, the adverse impact on the profitability parameters of the firms is apparent too. The poll results show that 44% and 39% of the CEOs expect the dent on their revenue and net profit growth respectively to be more than 10% in the first half of the current fiscal as compared to the same period in 2019-20. “The good news which got further attestation from the poll results is that the external demand has remained supportive, with 81% of the respondents expecting that the second wave in India will not have adverse impact on the exports for their sector in the first half of the current year than the comparable period in 2019-20”, said Mr Banerjee. The buoyant external demand is buttressed by large-scale global stimulus and the fast pace of vaccination coverage across key global economies. In addition to a favorable external environment, some encouraging news is also forthcoming from the employment scenario. Localized containment measures during the second wave had a limited impact on stalling the economic activities fully, portending favorably for the employment situation. Not surprisingly, an overwhelming 83% of the CEOs polled foresee either an increase in hires or maintenance of status-quo on the hiring front.

Gautam Adani sees Indian economy growing to $15 trillion in two decades AHMEDABAD: Billionaire Gautam Adani recently said the Indian economy is at the start of a virtuous cycle and on the path to becoming a USD 15 trillion economy over the next two decades. The Indian economy was worth USD 2.89 trillion before the pandemic, which wiped off over 7 per cent of the total economy. Addressing the shareholders of his port-to-energy conglomerate Adani Group, he said while questions are being raised about India’s target of becoming a USD 5 trillion economy in the next four years, he has no doubt that India will achieve it. “I personally see it as an inconsequential question,” Adani, 59, who is Chairman of the Group, said. “India will be a 5 trillion-dollar economy, and then go on to be a 15 trillion-dollar-plus economy over the next two decades,” he said. He went on to state that India will emerge as one of the largest global markets, both in terms of consumption size
and market cap. “There will be bumps along the road, as has been the case in the past, and is expected to be the case in the future. “However, there cannot be any doubt that the largest middle class that will ever exist, augmented by an increase in the working-age and consuming population share, Mr. Gautam Adani will have a positive impact on India’s growth very much in line with the demographic dividend India enjoys,” he said. Stating that history has shown that several learnings emerge from every pandemic crisis, Adani said India and the world are wiser as they go through the COVID-19 pandemic. “India is at the start of a virtuous cycle that is driven by the growth in the middle class population, and our nation today has the longest runway of any country in the world,” he said.
Maritime Supply Chains stuck in a Catch-22 : Drewry LONDON: Sailing schedules cannot be relied upon – as long as ports are congested. But port efficiency cannot really recover as long as vessels “bunch” together, arrive outside the planned terminal windows or divert away from nearby congested ports. Where does this catch-22 leave shippers? More and more often, it seems, resolving one problem along the container shipping supply chain creates even bigger problems and disruptions elsewhere in the supply chain. Just recently, operations returned to normal at Yantian International Container Terminal (YICT), after Covid-19 staff restrictions there, but the congestion shifted largely to nearby port of Hong Kong and also affected other ports in Asia, as ships and cargo volumes were diverted. Because ports are already struggling to cope with high volumes, they are vulnerable to sudden, incremental stresses. Drewry’s tracking of vessel waiting events in the ports of Yantian and Hong Kong shows the congestion easing in Yantian, while simultaneously increasing in Hong Kong. As can be seen in our Cancelled Sailings Weekly Insight report, the situation of vessel delays at ports in North America and Europe is also serious and the delays of 4 days or more are chronic and sustained.
Source: Drewry Supply Chain Advisors It will certainly take an awful length of time before schedules are back to normal and reliable again, because the current model of operations of carriers – sliding schedules, blanking sailings and skipping congested ports in their rotations – is expected to continue. Particularly for shippers and BCOs, this will mean a long period of extended and less predictable transit times, combined with rollovers, lack of space and empty equipment, and extreme spot freight rates (see related Logistics Executive Briefing opinion piece).
Source: Drewry Cancelled Sailings Weekly Insight The imminent peak season will exacerbate the situation further and there are further risks on the horizon, such as potential US West Coast port lockdowns in 2022. Shippers and importers find themselves stuck in the middle of this vicious circle where one problem amplifies another, with no industry-wide solution in sight.
Source: Drewry Cancelled Sailings Weekly Insight Drewry is having many discussions with shippers about alternatives (alternative ports, alternative transport modes, alternatives transloading nodes for a specific shipper) and even about the feasibility of major BCOs chartering containerships, as HomeDepot did recently. The new Chinese carrier CU Line, for example, is considering new investors in its venture. Logistics planners are also rethinking safety margins and increasing inventory at destination. In Drewry’s view, these industry-wide container supply chain problems are not going away. As a shipper/BCO, you should be thinking about tactics and strategies to diversify and mitigate potentially long-lasting ‘Catch-22’ disruptions to your maritime supply chains.
