MSC Project Cargo Solutions Help Drive Africa's Industrialisation GENEVA: At MSC, dedicated teams of experts in project cargo have been taking care of oversized freight for over 40 years in multiple locations across the globe. From Asia to West Africa and all over the globe, our specialized teams are capable and ready to deal with a variety of requests for oversized cargo. Our extensive inventory of special equipment gives us the capability to transport large, heavy, and irregular sized cargo. We can handle cargo using floating, mobile, or Gantry cranes. Our teams are extensively trained and offer destination-specific knowledge and support for oversized cargo requiring special equipment such as platforms, open top containers, or flat racks. For breakbulk cargo being transported to West Africa, we have direct connections to our Lomé hub from across the world. From Lomé, we can directly arrange for cargo to be brought anywhere in the West Africa region, for example Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Benin, or Togo.

Detail oriented and dedicated We recently transported three breakbulk packages of piping from Tianjin, China, to our terminal in Lomé, where they were then sent onwards to their final destination in Nigeria. The pipes will ultimately be used for the transport of LNG. We pay maximum attention to the entire process and to all levels of operation. As far as the planning and transportation process of large shipments is concerned, as soon as we receive the request for quotation, a task force is activated in order to evaluate the feasibility and the risks that may occur during the treatment of the packages and to make corrections. The three packages of cargo were inspected by on-site experts in Tianjin, and then two were loaded using a shore gantry crane and one using a floating crane for the heavier weight. Thea team of stevedores ensured that each piece of cargo was safely attached to the lifiting systems, and each piece was loaded onto a designated flat track container. They were then safely stored and lashed once loaded onto the ship by the team on the ground. Each package was lashed individually in the manner best suited to the weight and size of the cargo. Justin Ohuonu, Port Captain and Terminal Efciency Manager explained the process at the LCT: “The Lomé Container Terminal has all the necessary infrastructure, handling equipment, and expertise to handle this kind of cargo. For this shipment, all the required resources were mobilized, and a synergy was established in order to achieve the desired result for the customer. As usual, special attention was paid to the

whole process; from planning, to the operations on the quay, to the final delivery of the packages.” The Pearl of Africa To date, the Lomé Container Terminal is one of the best container terminals on the African continent. With a storage area of 53 ha, a quay length of 1050 meters, and a dock depth of 16.60 meters, all kinds of ships are welcome. Coupled with this infrastructure is a highly qualified and dedicated staff – meaning that at LCT there is no wait for ships in the harbor. In 2021 LCT passed the milestone of one million containers per year, and throughout 2022 so far has a performance level above 32 GMPH. With the latest generation of equipment, LCT is ready for any cargo handling needs. Equipped with nine STS with two more on the way, two mobile cranes, 27 RTG and more than 70 trailer trucks, the terminal has a wide variety of resources to call on. Mobile cranes especially allow agility and precision when handling heavy cargos and ensure an increase in volumes handled and reduction in a ships time spent in the harbour. The combined excellence of the LCT staff and resources available ensure it lives up to the promise of excellence expected by partners and shippers using the facility.

Global coverage, customized solutions Included in our customized cargo solutions: • Expert stowage planning onboard our vessels • Customs clearance and documentation • Inland collection and deliveries using a variety of equipment • Stevedoring, port lashing, and port storage facilities • Global and regional coverage with regular weekly services • Loading, lashing, and securing the cargo at the origin port or nearby depot • Local experts liaising directly with the port • Dedicated customer service We are committed to finding the best transport solution for special cargo, whatever its dimensions, weight, or destination.

Containers availability improves; Ocean freight fallen by up to 15% : Exporters FIEO pegged merchandise exports in current fiscal year at $475 bn, 14% higher than last year Cont’d. from Pg. 3

The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has pegged India’s merchandise exports in the current fiscal year at $475 billion, 14% higher than the previous financial year. In FY22, India’s merchandise exports rose by 43% over FY21 to $418 billion. “In FY22, global markets created an inventory as commodity prices went up. Exports had gathered momentum af ter the second Covid-19 wave, but now due to inflationary pressure the volume growth of exports will be less,” said Ajay Sahai, Director-General of FIEO.

If the Russia-Ukraine conflict does not end soon, the dynamics might change, he said. “As things stand today, India’s merchandise exports in FY23 may be around $475 billion,” Sahai added. Since the Chinese economy is opening up after four months of Covid-19 led lockdowns, Indian exporters will face more competition from China in the global markets, he said. “Container availability has improved, and the freight cost has gone down by 10%-15%. We have to see how long this situation continues,” said Mahesh Desai, chair man, Engineering Exports India. “Once China becomes active, the container shortage may again

emerge,” said Ravi Sehgal, former chairman of the Engineering Export Promotion Council of India. While international container prices have increased by up to 15% on average in May, in India they have declined, similar to the trend observed in China. There has been a month-on-month decline in the prices of 40-foot containers in Chennai, to $4,015 in May from $4,044 in April. India recorded its highest-ever textiles and apparel exports at $44.4 billion in the financial year 2022, indicating an increase of 41% over FY21. Export of ready-made garments was at $16 billion with a 36% share in FY22, up 31% against the previous year.

INSTC began operation with 1st shipment from Russia to India TEHRAN: The International NorthSouth Transport Corridor (INSTC) began operation with the first shipment from Russia to India, the head of Iranian-Russian port Solyanka in the Astrakhan region said. Dariush Jamali, the Head of the Iranian-Russian port of Solyanka in the Astrakhan region in the north of the Caspian Sea said recently that the first shipment using the International North-South Transport Cor ridor (INSTC) will embark on its journey from St. Petersburg, Russia, and after being transfer red to the port of Astrakhan of Russian Federation, it will enter Iran via the Caspian Sea.

Jamali said that the shipment contains two 40-foot containers containing wood laminate weighing 41 tonnes. He added that the transit operation is being carried out by the regional bureau of Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL Group) in Russia (ITS International Transport & Shipping of Iran in Russia) in cooperation with the logistics companies of IRISL Group in India. He also said that the shipment will enter the Anzali Free Zone in the north of Iran under a national bill of lading and then be transported to Bandar Abbas on lorries and from

there the containers will be transported to the port of Nhava Sheva in India as their final destination. Jamali added that according to the signed agreements on the transportation of large numbers of shipments from Russia and Belarus to India through the ports of Astrakhan, this first cargo is considered the beginning of the foreign transit boom in the International North-South Transport Corridor and in the near future will see prosperity in the field of transit through INSTEC generating lots of income for the Governments of Russia, Iran and India.

Export-Import Bank of India sees Goa as hub for export services PA N J I : T h e p h a r m a c e u t i c a l industry accounts for 47% of Goa’s export sector, followed by iron, steel and iron ore, which made up 15% of Goa’s exports in 2021-22, said the ExportImport Bank of India. Given that Goa is emerging as a key ‘work from home’ destination in the post-pandemic world, the state now has an opportunity to improve in service exports, officials s a i d . H o w e v e r, l o c a l i n d u s t r y representatives pointed out that the PramodSawantGovernment needs to appoint an IAS Officer as an administrator for exports if Goa’s export has to thrive. “Drug formulation and biologicals constitute 47% of total exports of Goa,” said MayankKhurana, Export-Import Bank of India’s deputy manager. “The data for export destinations from Goa showed that highest was done to the US, followed by 10% and 5% to China and UK respectively.” Khurana was giving an overview on India’s foreign trade and the composition of Goa’s top merchandise exports during a capacity-building

session on export opportunities for Goa. The programme was organised by the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI). “Due to increased digital modes of work that is work from home and companies preferring Goa as one of the key destinations, services exports have the potential to grow exponentially in the coming years,” said Khurana. Speaking about the challenges that Goa-based merchandise exporters face, GCCI director general Sanjay Amonkar said that Mormugao Port is unable to cater to the needs of exporters, who have to rely on ports in Mumbai to ship goods overseas. “During discussions, exporters say that the Mormugao Port is not at all being utilised for exports due to stoppage of the container service. To promote exports in the state, more importance needs to be given to exports,” said Amonkar. For Goa’s exports to take off, the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) needs to reopen its office in Goa, while the state government should

appoint an IAS officer who can liaison and coordinate with the multiple agencies involved in exports, said Amonkar. “The government of Goa should appoint a secretary for exports who will be a singlepoint contact for all exportsrelated support, be it finance, logistics, basic infrastructure or promotion and coordination with the Union gover nment departments. Today, exportrelated matters are spread with various central government departments and are difficult to access,” said Amonkar. Exim Bank’s chief manager P rashant Kumar said that the UbharteSitaare Programme (USP) will help identify Indian companies that have good export potential, but are under-performing due to the lack of financial and technical support. C u r r e n t l y u n d e r- p e r f o r m i n g companies are being offered structured support, both financial and advisory services and technical assistance, for which an initial corpus of Rs 1,000 crore has been created, said Kumar.

Rail Ministry panel suggests railways provide ‘Transit Guarantee’ for all Container freight NEW DELHI: As the railway ministry sets an ambitious target to increase the freight loading to 3,000 million tonnes (MTs) by 2027, more than double of what it achieved in 202122, a high powered panel set up by the ministry has suggested the railways offer “Transit Guarantee” services for all container freight trains, based on a committed average speed linked with the lead between origin and destination points. It has recommended the railways to allow for up to 10% variation from commitment for container freight movement, and also offer 2% freight rebate when the commitment is not met. It has suggested more focus on container cargo, which has witnessed nearly 7% compound annual growth rate in the past few years. The 10-member committee on “Mission 3000 MT” — all from the railway board — has submitted the

report to the railway ministry recommending the actions required to achieve this target. In 2021-22, the national transporter recorded loading of 1,418 MT freight and that was the highest ever. According to the report, the ministry needs to take several steps including the investment of Rs 8.45 lakh crore in infrastructure and rolling stock over the next five years and adding new products to its freight basket. The report has flagged that in the absence of assured transit time, there is a need to offer “Freight Express” service which will enable modal shift from road to rail by improving asset turnaround and thereby reducing cost. It has given a roadmap for improving asset utilisation, turnaround time of rakes and how to reduce the idling of rakes. The panel has pointed out that the railway pricing works in the favour of heavy cargo because of which those who

operate light cargo containers are at a disadvantage and such cargo tends to move on road. “Certain commodities are still restricted for transportation by rail in containers despite having demand. This is a hindrance which restricts containerisation of commodities and has an effect on the growth of overall container volume,” it has said. The committee has recommended the railways to start a web-portal — Small Freight Aggregation Platform — to aggregate demand of small consignments. It has also highlighted the need to have more proliferation of end-to-end third party insurance on the lines being provided by the postal department. The report comes at a time when the Indian Railways has set the target to achieve 40-45% of modal share of freight by 2030 against the current level of around 27%-28%.

Coal India to import 6 million tonnes of imported coal NEW DELHI: Coal India, the world’s largest coal miner by output, has issued two tenders to import 6 million tonnes of coal for utilities in the next 12 months, it said, as the Government seeks to boost fuel availability. This follows another tender the state-run miner issued earlier to import 2.42 million tonnes of coal by the end of September. Coal India (CIL), which has little

experience in importing coal, was asked to place orders for shipments from overseas by the Power Ministry as utilities suggested multiple tenders would lead to confusion and sought centralised procurement through CIL. The company said in a statement it expected each of the equal-sized tenders for supplies to the country’s eastern and western coasts to be worth about 38.50 billion Indian rupees ($494.7 million). CIL has an

option to double the quantities under both tenders, it added. The last date of bid submission is July 5. Coal India wants to tap the fuel supplies as and when requested by utilities, it said. “It is an advance action by CIL in fortifying future supplies and keeping a vendor ready,” it said. The company seeks delivery of coal within 30 days of placing the order in parcel sizes of 50,000 tonnes.

Clampdown on steel export may impact Major Ports MUMBAI: The clampdown on the export of iron ore, pellet and finished steel could hit the throughput of some of the Major Ports, including Haldia, as these commodities form a significant part of their overall cargo movement. Iron ore and pellet exports together account for 26.45 million tonne (mt) of cargo for the ports in FY22. The country had also exported 20.4mt of finished and semi finished steel in the last fiscal.Paradip in Odisha and Vizag in Andhra Pradesh and Mormugaon in Goa are the three major ports for iron ore export. In pellets, Mangalore in Karnataka and Adani- owned private port Dhamra in Odisha are the two key gateways along with Paradip. In steel, Mumbai and Gangavaram, a private port owned by Adani, are the two major gateways. It is likely these ports will be impacted if the export duties continue for long. The ModiGovernment last month imposed a 45 per cent duty on pellet export and a 50 per cent duty on all grades of iron ore export on May 21. The Centre also slapped a 15 per cent duty on finished steel export for an indefinite period. “Ports which have high dependence on iron ore or pellet export may be impacted unless volume growth in other cargo baskets make up for the losses,” Sai Krishna, vice-president and sector head (corporate ratings), Icra, said. A senior official of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Calcutta, revealed that deceleration in export is being felt already. “There is already an impact. Movement of iron ore has come down,” the official said. The export of iron ore from Haldia is about 3mt on average per year. However, a large part of iron ore, especially with low ferrous content, is not used by steel mills in India. These quantities may still be exported. Similarly, the government left out semi finished steel items out of the ban on export. There is a possibility that the Indian companies may look to increase the export of

semi finished steel, which fetches lower margins than finished steel, to maintain capacity utilisation. Only 5mt of semi finished steel was exported last fiscal, compared with 15.4mt of finished steel, data showed. Iron ore, pellets and fines contribute about 8 per cent to the major port’s combined volume. Iron and steel, in comparison, accounts for only 1.1 per cent. Understandably, the impact of export duty will be asymmetric on each port. In fact, if the import of petroleum products or thermal coal go up, some of the losses emanating from the iron and steel sector may be pared. Crude oil, petroleum products, LPG and LNG together contribute more than 30 per cent share of Indian Major Ports while thermal coal accounts for 12 per cent of total cargo volume.

Global Air Cargo demand down :International Air Transport Association LONDON: The global air cargo markets showed a drop in demand and contraction in capacity during April 2022, according to an International Air Transport Association (IATA) report. The effects of Omicron in Asia and the Russia–Ukraine war continue to create a challenging operating backdrop that is driving the decline, it said. Capacity was 2% below 2021 (+1.2% for international operations). Both global capacity and international capacity decreased slightly in April compared to March. Asia experienced the largest falls in capacity. Key factors in the operating environment to be noted are: • The war in Ukraine led to a fall in cargo capacity used to serve Europe as several airlines based in Russia and Ukraine were key cargo players. And the zero-Covid policy in China led to capacity challenges due to flight cancellations because of labor shortages. • New export orders, a leading indicator of cargo demand and world trade are now shrinking in all markets except the US. Global goods trade has continued to decline in 2022, with China’s economy growing more slowly because of Covid-19 related lockdowns (among other factors). The lockdowns have brought much of the world’s largest port, Shanghai, to a standstill. Supply chain disruptions due to the Ukraine-Russia conflict are also adding to the downward pressure on trade. “Air cargo demand fell by 11.2% in April and capacity contracted 2% compared to April 2021. The combination of the war in Ukraine and Covid-19 lockdowns in China have pushed up energy costs, intensified supply chain

disruptions, and fed inflation. The operating environment is challenging for all businesses, including air cargo. But with China easing lockdown restrictions, there is cause for some optimism and the supply/demand imbalance is keeping yields high,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. Asia-Pacific airlines saw their air cargo volumes decrease by 15.8% in April 2022 compared to the same month in 2021. This was the weakest performance of all regions and significantly slower than the previous month (5.1%). Airlines in the region have been heavily impacted by lower trade and manufacturing activity due to Omicronrelated lockdowns in China. Because of this, available capacity in the region fell 19.4% compared to April 2021, the largest drop of all regions. North American carriers posted a 6.6% decrease in cargo volumes in April 2022 compared to April 2021. Demand in the Asia-North America market declined significantly, however, other key routes such as Europe – North America remain strong. Capacity was up 5.2% compared to April 2021. Several carriers in the region are set to receive delivery of freighters in 2022, which should help address pent-up demand on routes where it is needed. European carriers saw a 14.4% decrease in cargo volumes in April 2022 compared to the same month in 2021. The Within Europe market fell significantly, down 24.6% month on month. This is attributable to the war in Ukraine. Labor shortages and lower manufacturing activity in Asia due to Omicron also affected volumes. Capacity fell 0.2% in April 2022 compared to April 2021.

US President slams Carriers for inflationary pressures Nine shipping companies who ship from Asia to the United States have raised prices by as much as 1,000% WASHINGTON: U.S. President Joe Biden has waded, yet again, into an unwarranted controversy - shipping prices. "One of the reasons prices have gone up is because a handful of companies who control the market have raised shipping prices by as much as 1,000 percent. It's outrageous — and I'm calling on Congress to crack down on them."We were paying $3,500 a container in 2020, and then by September-October last year, we were paying upwards of $20-25,000," Hal Lawton, President and CEO, Tractor Shipping Company told Biden. "Yeah, it's outrageous," replied Biden who went on to add that "one of the big reasons why prices are going up is the cost of shipping things across the Pacific, in particular. There's only nine shipping companies, major shipping companies who ship from Asia to the United States. These companies have raised their prices by as much as 1,000 percent. Biden asked Lawton, "by how much have your costs gone up?" To which the reply was : "Almost by $100 million. We are not a huge company but that $100 million they passed on to us, you

know, is more than our entire profit. They are depending on us to deliver those products from my farms to their countries. If we don't fix these problems, we will lose our customers." Biden has called on the Congress to crack down on ocean shippers. “We've got to change this. I asked the Congress to pass a piece of legislation to remedy this. Democrats and Republicans voted for it. It's over to the House of Representatives. And I'm looking forward to signing it because we got to bring down prices. The underlying elements of our economy are strong, stronger than any other nation in the world. But inflation is a problem. This won't solve it all but it will solve a big piece of it." Meanwhile a fact-finding report by the US Federal Maritime Commissioner Rebecca Dye last month had concluded that despite customer perception of collusion and lack of competition as freight rates soared, neither was actually the case. The report, in fact, went on to suggest 12 new recommendations.

DP World Southampton is 1st Port in Britain to replace diesel with vegetable oil & cuts net emissions by over 80 % LONDON: DP WORLD’S container terminal at Southampton has taken a major step forward in the journey to net zero by becoming the first port in Britain to eliminate fossil diesel from its operations entirely and transition to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). Diesel previously accounted for 90 per cent of the terminal’s emissions but HVO – a renewable biodiesel derived from sustainable sources – eliminates more than 80 per cent of net carbon dioxide emissions as well as significantly reducing nitrogen oxide, particulate matter and carbon monoxide. John Trenchard, UK Supply Chain Director at DP World, said: “I am delighted that we have successfully made the leap to fuelling all of our fleet and installations at Southampton with HVO. This innovation shows our determination to continue playing our part in helping the UK meet its target of delivering the Government’s Net Zero 2050 policy and improving local air quality.” “We estimate that using HVO will save around 14,000 tons of carbon dioxide on an annualised basis – the equivalent of taking over 8,000 family cars off UK roads each year. We have a clear responsibility to reduce the impact of our operations and

offer customers solutions that support their own sustainability journeys, which is why we are working with our supply chain partners to accelerate the transition to green energy.” “DP World Southampton moves more than one quarter of all containers by rail and we are encouraging other customers to embrace this modal shift. Taken together with DP World London Gateway, we take 300,000 trucks off UK roads each year and every additional daily train we can fill saves up to 6,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.” DP World first trialled HVO last year, using the fuel in its forklift trucks, reefer (refrigerated unit) generators and straddle carriers (pictured), which lift containers moved by the quay cranes and then service onward forms of transport via road and rail. Based on actual diesel usage calculations and replacing these with HVO technical data, a net carbon dioxide reduction of more than 80 per cent was calculated. HVO is regarded as an interim solution. Electric and hydrogen power are examples of alternative energy sources that are being researched and trialled within DP World, the leading provider of smart logistics solutions which helps trade flow across the globe. Its new Berth 4 at London Gateway could be 100 per cent electric when it is completed in 2024.

Shanghai back into lockdown again SHANGHAI: A Covid-19 flare-up in Shanghai just eight days after emerging from a two-month lockdown has returned the port city to square one, raising concerns of more slowdowns in the world’s busiest container port. Residents in 14 of Shanghai’s 16 districts have been ordered to test for Covid-19 over the weekend, after 11 cases were detected on 9th June. Residents will be confined for two days and testing is expected to take 12 days. Liner lytica analyst Tan HuaJoo told that for shipping, the situation may not be that serious. “Clearly, it’s a setback, but the impact was mitigated in the last round as cargoes were able to divert to Ningbo port,” he noted. Calls to Maersk Line’s Shanghai office said that the company’s operations are as per its 1 June advisory, although the Danish giant is minimising office work and

continuing to make most staff work from home. Maersk said that trucking is still available in China’s main ports and nearby cities, providing the drivers test negative for Covid-19, adding that such services gradually improved after the previous outbreak was controlled. Warehouses in Shanghai resumed normal operations on 1 June, and Maersk staff said that nothing has changed. However, drivers entering the warehouses must test negative for Covid-19 in the 24 hours prior, if they had been outside of Zhejiang province. Cargoes will not be accepted if drivers have been to the medium-high risk area in the last 14 days. A spokesperson for Ocean Network Express (ONE) told that the company is not restricting the acceptance of container shipments to and from Shanghai.

APM Terminals’ 8 European facilities are now running on renewable electricity THE HAGUE: In line with our ambitious target of achieving net zero emissions across our controlled terminals globally by 2040 and a 70% total emission reduction by 2030, one of the major pillars of our decarbonisation strategy is electrification of our assets, radically reducing our consumption of fossil fuels across terminals. However, it is not just about switching from diesel-fuelled equipment to using the one that runs on electricity, but also about making a conscious choice to only source green or emission-free electricity, therefore reducing our Scope 2 emissions, that is, emissions resulting from the production of electricity needed to power our electric terminal equipment. And the definition of “renewable electricity” is quite simple: it is the electricity that is generated by using for example hydropower, or wind & solar energy. After switching to green electricity in APM Terminals Aarhus, Denmark at the beginning of 2022, we have now achieved an important milestone, with all electric operations at APM Terminals’ European facilities being powered by green electricity. As a result of our latest round of switches, the overall emission reduction is 52 kilotons of CO2, which equals to 9% of APM Terminals’ overall Emissions versus our baseline year of 2020. These reductions and the sources of procured electricity are all certified by PwC.

Outside of Europe, we also have major achievements in terms of switching to green electricity. APM Terminals Pipavav in India signed a contract to procure 40% of its electricity demand from wind and solar energy sources via an Offsite Power Purchase Agreement with Cleanmax, reducing the scope 2 emissions by 3400 tCO2 (out of a total of 8500 tCO2). They have also commissioned a solar PV installation of of 1 MW, which will provide 14MWh per year and reduce emissions by further 1040 tons of CO2. With these initiatives, APM Terminals Pipavav is now one the lowest emitting terminal operators in India. In our industry electrification is one of the most effective levers to reduce emissions. But we need to make sure this happens in a transparent manner, by purchasing electricity that truly comes from renewable sources – otherwise it is just “pollution in disguise”.
