NEW DELHI: India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has reached $3.75 trillion in 2023, from around $2 trillion in 2014, said Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday,12thJune.

He stated, “The new FTP 2023 releasedon31stMarchfocusesonkey areas such as the liberalisation of merchanting trade, and we are hopeful that it will strengthen mercantile trading in the country. It has been observed that obtaining financing for cross-border trade is often perceived as more challenging compared to domestic trade. To enhance our competence and competitiveness in the global market, we need to address and rectify this risk perception. Trade finance plays a vital role in mitigating these challenges.”

International tradeisthestringthatbindsandholds the interconnected world, which is why the theme “One Earth, One Family, One Future”. It is our vision that by 2030, we take India’s share in global trade to 10% and exports to 25%. In services, we achieved 422 billion last year and in 2023, we have a 6.03% growth in exports. Overall exports are at 770.18 billion with13%growth.”

As per the provisional estimates released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) recently, real GDP growth for 2022-23 stood at 7.2percent,higherthanthe7percent projectedearlier.

The gross domestic product (GDP) rose 6.1 per cent in the March quarter from a year earlier, acceleratingsequentiallyaswellfrom the upwardly revised 4.5 per cent in

the preceding quarter, Government datashowed.

Recently, Chief Economic Advisor Dr V Anantha Nageswaran lauded the estimated 7.2 per cent real GDPgrowthin2022-23andexpressed confidence that when the final numbers for the fiscal are frozen in early 2026, the growth will be higher.

Speaking at an event organised by the Bharat Chamber of Commerce, Nageswaran said 7.2 per cent GDP growth is "heartening achievement forthegovernmentandeconomy".

"Itiseffortsofpeoplelikeyoumore than the Government that gave us

7.2 per cent real GDP growth in FY 23 following the 9.1 per cent in FY22,"ANIquotedhimassaying.

Nageswaran said India's GDP growth estimates are presented six times and "the final estimate for FY 23 will actually be with us in January-February 2026. And my expectation and belief is that when the final number for FY23 is frozen in February 2026, the number will be morethan7.2percent."

Nageswaran said this is the first reliable estimate of GDP growth and "as more and more data become available, further revision will be for upsidefrom7.2percent."

APM Terminals : Global Ranking scores indicate port stay ambitions well on track

THE HAGUE: No fewer than 18 of APM Terminals’ operations ranked in the top of the world’s most efficient portsindex,aspublishedrecentlybytheWorldBankand S&PGlobalMarketIntelligence.

APM Terminals Pipavav joined in the celebrations after taking top ranking for India, again for a second consecutive year. This comes as the port continues to strengthen the country’s infrastructure and reduce logisticscosts.

Keld Christensen, CEO, Port of Salalah was delighted that his team were second only to one, for the second year running in the Container Port Performance Index 2022 (CPPI). “This underlines the stability and commitment to serve our customers in the best possible way,” he said, pointing to improvements in productivity of over 20% over the last five years, as well as a strong customer-centric focus throughout the entire organisation.

The ranking means that the Port of Salalah is in first positionfortheWestCentralandSouthAsiaRegion.

Elsewhere, APM Terminals had cause to celebrate, including at Colombia’s Cartagena port, placed 5th, flankedbyTanger-Medat4thandTanjungPelepasat6th place. Other APM Terminals ports featuring in the top ten are China’s Guangzhou and Egypt’s Port Said. Just outside the top 20 positioning is Buenaventura, Colombia, hot on the heels of Tianjin (20), Alecira (16) Yokohama (15) and Cai Mep (12), all of which are key APMTerminals’locations.

Reducedportstaypledge

The report will make happy reading for APM Terminals’ leaders who committed to reduce average port stay reduction by 20% in 2023 compared to 2021 and achievea30%reductionby2025worldwide.

While the CPPI does not mention decarbonisation directly, the choice of using port stay to evaluate success is significant, since this is a major indicator in the limitationofemissions.

APM Terminals’ shipping line customers benefit fromcostsavingsresultingfromefficientoperationsthat leadtoreducedbunkerconsumption.

Decarbonisationcommitment

In support of its decarbonisation objectives - to be fully net zero by 2040, and to reduce total emissions by 70% by 2030 compared to 2020 - APM Terminals’ is increasingly providing integrated supply chain data and specificberthingwindows.

This data enables shipping companies to adjust their fuel consumption and speed, to optimally time arrival at port. Accurate berthing windows facilitate slower onward steaming speeds, improved reliability and lessenedenvironmentalimpact.

In determining the best performing container ports in the world, the World Bank-S&P Global Market Intelligence collect time stamps from 10 of the world’s largest liner shipping companies, which collectively operate almost 80 percent of global container shipping.

AccordingtotheCPPI,itsreportisintendedto“serve as a reference point for improvement for key stakeholders in the global economy, including national governments, port authorities and operators, development agencies, supranational organizations, various maritime interests, and other public and private stakeholders in trade, logistics, and supply chain services.

“The performance of a port may be assessed based on a myriad of measurements, such as: terminal capacity or space utilization, cost, landside connectivity & services, or ship to shore interchange.” However, the CPPIhasbaseditscalculationsontimeatport.

The body notes that “Container ports are critical nodesinglobalsupplychainsandessentialtothegrowth strategies of many emerging economies. In numerous cases, the development of high-quality container port infrastructure operating efficiently has been a prerequisite for successful export-led growth strategies.”

It goes on to say that “efficient, high quality port infrastructure can facilitate investment in production and distribution systems, engender expansion of manufacturing and logistics, create employment opportunities,andraiseincomelevels.”

PIL : Forging deeper connections among Singapore, South Africa and Kenya

SINGAPORE: It was a privilege for PIL, represented by Mr S.S. Teo, Executive Chairman, to be invited by the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) to lead the business delegation to Johannesburg, South Africa and Nairobi, Kenya from 14 to 20 May 2023. This was part of the 6-day official visit of Singapore’s Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong to the two African countries.

PIL was also a co-sponsor to two networking events with South African and Kenyan businesses on 15 May and 18 May 2023 respectively. These provided a platform for business leaders to meet and explore mutually beneficial business opportunities. NEW DELHI: The United Arab Emirates (UAE), with which India implemented a comprehensive free trade agreement in May last year, has emerged as the fourth largest investor in India during 2022-23, accordingtoGovernmentdata.

In the last fiscal, foreign direct investment (FDI) from the UAE to India jumped over three-fold to USD 3.35 billion from USD 1.03 billion in 2021-22, the data of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) showed. The UAE was the fourth largest investor in India in 2022-23 compared totheseventhin2021-22.

Singaporewasthelargestinvestor in India with USD 17.2 billion investment in FY23, followed by Mauritius(USD6.1billion)andtheUS (USD 6 billion). “The rapidly strengthening of bilateral ties and investment cooperation between India and United Arab Emirates (UAE) can be chiefly attributed to the strong bilateral relations between

India and UAE, growth in investment commitments from UAE, and the policyreformstofurthereaseofdoing businesses between the two countries,” Rudra Kumar Pandey, Partner, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas&Co, said.

UAE’s investments in India are mainly in sectors like services, sea transport, power and construction activities. One of the crucial factors for the increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) from UAE is the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and UAE on February 18, 2022 (effective from May 1, 2022), Pandey added. “Apart from CEPA, another growth engine of FDI from UAE in India is the investment commitment from UAE. UAE has committed to invest USD 75 billion in the Indian infrastructure sector over aperiodoftime.Ithasalsocommitted topartnerwithIndiaintherenewable energysector,”Pandeynoted.

India and the UAE have

operationalised a comprehensive free trade agreement since May 1 last year. Under the pact, a number of goods from both countries are getting zero-duty access to each other’s markets, besides eased norms for promotinginvestments.

The Country accounts for about 2.5 per cent of the total FDI India received between April 2000 and March 2023. During this period, India hasattractedUSD15.6billionworthof overseas inflows from the UAE, the datashowed.

According to experts, the trade agreement has helped significantly increasetheimportandexportbetween the countries and consequently increasedtheinvestmentsfromUAEin Indiancompanies.

“India’s constant liberalisation of the FDI policy also boosted such investments. Similarly, we are also seeing that several Indian startups areexploringexpansionintheUAE,” Anindya Ghosh, Partner, IndusLaw, said.

Govt to list SCI’s non-core assets on bourses, to invite privatisation bids

NEW DELHI: The Government is likely to invite financial bids for the privatisation of Shipping Corporation of India after listing its non-core asset business SCILAL on the stock exchangesthismonth,anofficialsaid.

The Government has hived off the non-core assets of SCI in a separate company--ShippingCorporationofIndia Land And Assets Ltd (SCILAL) -- valued atRs2,392croreasofMarch31,2022.

As part of the demerger process, SCILAL will be listed on the stock exchanges, and every shareholder of the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) willgetoneshareofSCILAL.

"The stock exchange listing of SCILAL should happen by June. Thereafter clarity will emerge of privatisation of SCI and then financial bids will be invited," an official said recently.

The Government currently holds a 63.75 percent stake in SCI.

SEZ unit not exempt from inspection, investigation under GST, says Gujarat High Court

AHMEDABAD: In an important development, the Gujarat High Court has ruled that GST officials can initiate proceedings against a unit situated in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Ithasalsoimposedapenaltyontheunit for not cooperating with the process initiatedbythetaxdepartment.

“Respondent authorities (GST Department) are empowered to carry out proceedings in SEZ,” a division bench of Justices Ashutosh Shastri and J C Doshi said in a recent ruling, while dismissing a petition filed

by RHC Global Exports Private Ltd. Further, it said the Tax Department’s jurisdiction is unquestionable as the Central Government has already authorised those officers by virtue of a notification dated August 5, 2016. Further, provision under the State GST law indicates that where any proper officer issues an order under this Act, he is also issuing an order under the CGST Act as authorised by the Act, or under intimation to the jurisdictional officeroftheCentralGovernment Therefore,“itcannotbesaidthatthe

tax officers were acting without the authority of law or jurisdiction,” the bench added. Further, by virtue of a circulardatedJuly7,2017,thefunctions of proper officers under the CGST Act are also defined. Hence, “once the Central Government has notified the functions of proper officers, the said functions shall also be applicable to be carried out by the officers under the CGST Act and, hence, it cannot be said there was a lack of authority on the part of the respondents, as contended,” thebenchsaid.

Sri Lanka lifts import limits on 286 items as crisis eases

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka on Saturday lifted import restrictionson286items,saidFinanceMinistryasthenationis startingtoemergefromitsworsteconomiccrisisindecades.

Sri Lanka had plunged into crisis last year as its foreign exchangereservesranout.Thegovernmentlimitedimports onmorethan3,200items,includingseafood,electronics,and even musical instruments. Sri Lanka secured a $2.9 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), moderated its soaring inflation and embarked on rebuilding itsForeignExchangeReserves.

The country’s reserves grew 26 per cent to a 17-month high of $3.5 billion in May, helped by stronger remittances andtourismearnings.Thecurrencyhasrisenabout24%this year,centralbankdatashowed,reportcame.

“With the economy stabilising, import restrictions on

286itemshavebeenliftedfromFridaymidnight,”theFinance Ministry said in a statement. However, restrictions on 928itemswillcontinue,includingvehicleimports,whichwere banned in March 2020, the statement said. A wide range of items from railway carriages to radio broadcasting receivers areincludedinthelatestlistreleasedfromrestrictions.

Sri Lanka will also slash prices of 60 essential drugs by 16%fromthisweek.

Despite the easing of the crisis, the country still needs to complete debt talks with creditors by September, in time for its first IMF programme review, and implement key economicreformstoputitsrecoveryonasustainablepath.

TheIMFexpectsSriLanka’seconomytoshrinkabout3% this year after a 7.8% contraction last year, but the Governmentforecastsareturntogrowthnextyear.

Supply Chain Reliability Deteriorates, Prompting pulling forward of orders ahead of peak season

HAMBURG: According to Container xChange's June Forecaster, the persistent decline in container prices is being accompanied by resurging supply chain disruptions such as thePanamaCanaldrought,laborstrikesontheUSWestCoast, andatechnicalrecessionintheEurozone.

The forecaster also predicts a further slide in average container prices in the coming weeks, with no signs of container demand revival. The sentiment is reflected in a survey that Container xChange recently conducted (in May 2023) with the global freight forwarding community. About 69% of respondents (406 sample size) are hopeful of a container demand bounce back this year in 2023. Only 18% are hopeful of this revival in short term (1-3 months). And about 51% are “guestimating” without a clear outlook of timeline for containerdemandbounceback.

“The supply-demand imbalance worsens with upcoming vessel deliveries and low scrapping rates. Spot rates are at prepandemic levels in most trades, and contract rates are sliding. Coupledwithlowdemand,theindustrycontinuestograpplewith overcapacity of containers and vessel capacity. Now we have labour disruptions and the Panama Canal drought, which in normalcircumstanceswouldleadtoanuptickinfreightratesas they absorb effective capacity, but any significant price effect is now highly doubtful in the current market,” Shared ChristianRoeloffs,cofounderandCEO,ContainerxChange.

“For shippers this means that supply chain reliability will deteriorate again, potentially leading to a "pull forward" on orders. This in turn will likely "flatten out" any peak season and further decrease the likelihood of a freight rate increase in the secondhalfof2023,”Roeloffsadded.

No signs of container demand yet for peak season

Container prices generally surge during the preparation for the peak season. So far, these prices have failed to pick up. A study of average container prices on the Container xChange platformindicatesadisappointingrevivalofdemand.

Below is a table that compares average container prices across some of the busiest ports in the world from the Container xChange platform. The prices have fallen to the lowest levels in the last three years of comparison. Clearly, the data indicates poor demand for containers sofartillJune.

New York witnessed the average price of 20 ft dry containers to reach $6500 in June 2021, which has now crashed

by82%toreachat$1175inJune(1stweek)2023.

Similarly, Long Beach port saw average prices reaching a peak at $4118 in the beginning of August 2021, which has reducedby65%toreach$1430inMay2023.

This persistent fall of average container prices comes at a time when the shipping industry prepares for a ‘supposed peakseason’.

Average Container prices expected to fall further

The average price trends of subsequent months from 2022 indicate that, these prices further declined in the months of July – December at majority of these ports in that year. Ifthesametrendcontinues,thesepricescouldfurtherfall. Bottom of spot freight rates reached?

"In a highly competitive environment such as container shipping, the minimum offer price tends to gravitate towards the level of variable costs. In the case of container transportation, variable costs have surged by approximately 15-25% since 2019, depending on the trade lane" remarked Christian Roeloffs, CEO and Co-Founder of Container xChange.

"Consequently, the lower limit of freight rates offered by carriers has also increased by 15-25%. This poses challenges for shippers who now face higher variable costs for transporting cargo. Despite the significant decline in average container rates from 2021 to 2023, reaching almost 85% reduction, the underlying variable costs remain elevated—which makes a significant additional and sticky decrease in spot freight rates unlikely while contract rates still haveroomforfurtherdepreciation.”

Retail Sales lagging, US imports slump

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), US retail sales are slowing, and US container imports are on tracktodropbymorethan20%intheH12023.

“Both the US and Eurozone markets are experiencing disturbances contributing to a significant loss in consumer confidence, creating a ripple effect. Since the pent-up demand observed in late 2021, the industry is waiting for a 'demand comeback', which seems less likely in the coming peak season. Ofcourse there will be some demand, but rather subdued.” AddedRoeloffs.

Eurozone ‘Technical’ Recession

“The impact of inflation on the global supply chain can be significant and wide-ranging. Rise in input costs and costs of financing, change in consumer behaviour and changing trade behaviours will lead to a ripple effect on global supply chains, impacting the demand for certain products or industries. Business will need to adapt their production levels, inventory management, and distribution strategies accordingly,” addedRoeloffs.
