Port of Antwerp Bruges : NextGen District takes shape with players in green hydrogen and circular water use ANTWERP: Port of AntwerpBruges would like to support the transition to a climate-neutral society with NextGen District, a hotspot for the circular economy. The commitment of two new concessionaires, Plug and Ekopak, is another important milestone for this cluster in the heart of the Antwerp site. These pioneers' projects, a green hydrogen plant and a progressive water plant, make an essential contribution to circularity in the port. Large-scale green hydrogen production plant NASDAQ listed Plug has ambitions to become the world's largest producer of green hydrogen. The location near the largest chemical cluster in Europe combined with the ambition of Port of Antwerp-Bruges to become a major hydrogen hub for Europe were decisive factors when Plug chose NextGen District. The American hydrogen solutions

provider has signed a concession agreement for the construction of a green hydrogen production plant. Through a combination of locally produced solar and wind energy and purchased green electricity, it will produce 12,500 tons of liquid and gaseous green hydrogen per year for the European market. Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug: "Green hydrogen plays a vital role in the transition from the use of fossil fuels to green energy. In addition, the energy crisis in Europe has accelerated the demand for green hydrogen development projects. With this plant we aim to help Port of AntwerpBruges become a European hydrogen hub. As Europe struggles with the challenges of climate change and energy security, this plant will provide the necessary naturally generated, carbon-free hydrogen to local markets." Circular water use In addition to Plug, the Euronext Brussels listed Ekopak will also take up a spot in NextGen District. The Tielt-based water recycling company, in a joint-venture with water-link and the Flemish investment company PMV, will install a progressive water plant at the site, named project Waterkracht. This company will convert the wastewater from the inhabitants of Antwerp treated by Aquafin into the much higher quality level of sustainable cooling water that the companies in the port can reuse. At full capacity, the plant will produce up to 3,000m³/hr of sustainable cooling and process water so that minimum 20 billion litres of wastewater can be reused on an annual basis. Via a pipeline network, water-link distributes the circular cooling water so that all industrial companies on both the left and right bank can use it. Ekopak also aims to process local rainwater and wastewater from NextGen District into sustainable process water, thereby encouraging fully circular water use. In addition to its core focus on wastewater reuse, Ekopak will also work to increase circularity by converting waste streams into steam production and providing compressed air and fire-fighting water. "Circular water use is essential for the sustainable growth of a port. Our ambition is to reduce NextGen

District's water footprint to an absolute minimum. Moreover, with this project Ekopak can make a significant contribution to improving the port's sustainability" said Pieter Loose, CEO of Ekopak. The total investment value of these two new players amounts to 400 million euros and will generate around 60 new jobs. After applying for the necessary permits, the objective is to be operational by 2024-2025. Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO Port of AntwerpBruges: "These new investors are a confirmation of the attractiveness of our port and NextGen District, both nationally and internationally. These firms and their projects are exactly what we have in mind when developing this circular zone. After all, green hydrogen and circular water use are the basic elements of the climate transition. I am convinced that these projects will ensure that other change-makers will follow. I thank the firms for their trust and all the staff for making this happen." Annick De Ridder, Vice Mayor for the City of Antwerp and President of the Board of Directors of Port of Antwerp-Bruges: "We would like to be the first global port to reconcile the economy, man and the climate. These new players, and the investment and jobs that come with them, are great news for the sustainable growth of our port. In NextGen District, these pioneers will be given every opportunity to innovate and contribute to the strengthening, synergy and diversification of the port platform. With this cluster of circular companies at a prime logistical location, we can accelerate the transition to a climate-neutral society." Jan Jambon, Minister-President of Flanders: "Hydrogen plays an important role in the energy transition and at the same time offers many economic and societal opportunities for Flanders. Due to the strategic location of our ports and the expertise of our companies, research centers and educational institutions, we have all the assets to become the hydrogen hub of Western Europe. An opportunity that we must not miss. Plug's choice for Antwerp is the result of the strong relationship that I, the Flemish Government, Flanders Investment & Trade and the Port have built with the company. At the same time, it confirms the role that Flanders plays in renewable energy. I am therefore very pleased to welcome Plug in Flanders."

PM Gati Shakti National Masterplan to help achieve India’s aim of USD 5 Trillion economy : MoS Commerce NEW DELHI - Shri Som Parkash, Minister of State for Commerce & Industry, said the PM Gati Shakti National Masterplan will help achieve India’s aim of USD 5 Trillion economy. Addressing the Industry Stakeholders at the INDIA INTERNATIONAL LOGISTICS & SUPPLY CHAIN Conference, organised by PHDCCI, Shri Som Parkash, said India is one of the most attractive destinations for investment in the World and Government has prepared some important frameworks to help thrive businesses in the Country. One of them is PM Gati Shakti masterplan and its implementation, which will help us to achieve our aim in Logistic efficiency. An infrastructure master plan will make a difference through integrated approach by breaking the entrenched silos over six years, which has received Rs 20,000 crore allocation in this year’s Budget. Propelled by seven engines – roads, railways, airports, ports, mass transport, waterways and logistics – PM Gati Shakti is an idea whose time has come, added the Minister. The Minister appreciated PHDCCI for being the forerunner in having a specalised forum for Gati Shakti, the contribution for which will go long way in aligning the objectives with the PM's Vision of being a Globally leading economy. To help make this plan success, the Minister urged all industry stakeholders to work in this direction collectively to achieve its significant results. Shri Amrit Lal Meena, Special Secretary – Logistics, Dept of Commerce & Industry, Govt of India, said that a lot work is being done in this direction, mainly on component cost of transportation & fuel and inventory cost to bring in logistic efficiency. Time and cost overruns are major factors of concern in the implementation of the plan. Steps are being taken to bring them down to zero level. In PM GatiShakti master plan, 600 layers of all different Ministries of State Governments are integrated on digital platform for better coordination and early resolution. Gaps are identified and taken up on priority basis regarding transportation to eliminate unnecessary congestion, said Shri Amrit Lal Meena. Shri Pradeep Multani, President, PHDCCI, mentioned that the Indian logistics sector is on a big growth

tide. According to the domestic rating agency ICRA, India's logistics sector is expected to grow at a rate 8-10 per cent over the medium term. This is an improvement over the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.8 per cent at which the industry grew during the last five years. Going forward, the Government’s focus is to bring down the cost of logistics from the present 14.4 per cent.

The development of the logistics sector is also extremely important for the Indian economy, as it will boost exports, create jobs, and give the country a prominent position in the global supply chain, said Shri Multani.

TradeLens : Issues 1st eBL in the UAE, strengthening the Digitalisation of Global Supply Chains DUBAI: Safeline Freight and Fortuna DMCC became early adopters of the TradeLens eBL in the UAE, thereby accessing digital issuance, transfer, and surrender of original bills of lading using blockchain technology. Combined, the two companies move more than 7,500 containers annually in and out of the UAE. TradeLens is a carrier-neutral, blockchain-enabled digital supply chain platform jointly developed by Maersk and IBM. The solutions offered by TradeLens are accelerating the digitization agenda of the supply chain industry around the world by transforming manual, paper-based and time-consuming administrative processes into digital ones. TradeLens allows an original bill of lading to be digitally issued directly from a carrier and moved electronically through its journey with all the stakeholders. This reduces the hassles of sending physical papers from one stakeholder to the other through a courier process, eliminates the costly possibility of documents getting lost or forged, and removes inefficiencies from manual processes. Mr Ahmed Beyi, CEO Safeline Freight, commented on the successful issuance of eBL, “I was

amazed at how easy and fast I can control all my bill of ladings through the TradeLens eBL. Since this is a cloud-based solution, all my consignments and documents are available to my team and me on any device anywhere in the world.” He added, “With the eBL now being accepted by major ocean carriers, ports, customs and a list that keeps growing, life has become easier for freight forwarders and our customers.” The eBL technology developed by TradeLens provides a solution available to all shippers regardless of size or use case. The elimination of physical handoff of documentation accelerated during the pandemic, and the modernization of supply chain infrastructure with the use of technology became even more critical. The TradeLens ecosystem consists of more than 1000 organizations, including major ocean carriers representing over two-thirds of the global market, and integrated with leading trade finance banks operating in multiple countries with a shared vision to help modernize the trade finance

industry. The platform has already tracked more than 55 million container shipments, 4.7 billion events, and more than 25 million published documents. Varun Kulshreshtha, Regional Head of TradeLens, Maersk West & Central Asia, said, “TradeLens eBL is our latest addition to our portfolio of products in the UAE which also include visibility and document collaboration making the TradeLens platform a very compelling proposition for any company’s journey to digitize the supply chain. The eBL has proven to be very popular with customers and in a few short years should become the default way of managing shipments in our region.”

Growth may slow down in Container market : BIMCO OSLO - A combination of high demand and congestion has remained the order of the container market during the past six months. "Thus, high freight rates, charter rates, and asset prices as well as supply chain disruptions and liner operators reporting record results are appearing commonplace," BIMCO said in its latest update. Container volumes, however, have shown some early signs of weakening. "Reported head-haul and regional container volumes, which are the drivers of rates and prices, profitability, and congestion, were down 0.4 percent y/y and 1.4 percent y/y respectively in March 2022 but remained 11 percent and 1.8 percent up in March 2019." Though still high compared to the pre-Covid market, there has been a noticeable impact on rates and prices as well as activity in the asset markets, BIMCO said. "The China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) has slipped 12.6 percent from its peak in early-November 2021. In the time charter market, rates have slowed a little since peaking in late March and owners have had to accept much shorter time charter periods, which on average are now down to two years from a peak of four years in mid-2021." "The China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) has slipped 12.6 percent from its peak in early-November 2021. In the time charter market, rates have slowed a little since peaking in late March and owners have had to accept much shorter time charter periods, which on average are now down to two years from a peak of four years in mid-2021." Demand drivers US inflation has risen to its highest levels since the 1980s and is weighing on discretionary income, and consumer confidence is at its lowest level since 2011, the report said. "Retail inventories relative to sales meantime remain 18.9 percent lower than in January 2020. Even if retail sales begin to slip, it could take a while before it impacts container volumes as retailers likely need to rebuild inventories. In absolute terms inventories are, however, higher than before Covid, and some are finding it hard to find additional warehouse space." In Europe & Mediterranean region, consumers have reported the second-lowest confidence level on record, the report added. "In many countries, the pressure will be even higher than in North America and Europe & Mediterranean as food and energy expenses often add up to a much higher share of disposable income." All in all, conditions for consumers appear to be worsening across most of the world and businesses will naturally be impacted as well, the report said. Supply story Contracting activity has been high since Q42020, and 6.3 million TEUs in new contracts have been signed. "Deliveries of these ships will begin in 2023 but many will be delivered in 2024 and 2025." BIMCO

estimates that the fleet will grow by 3 percent in 2022 and 7.7 percent in 2023, ending at 27.4 million TEUs by 2024. "We believe that congestion will begin to ease towards the end of 2022 when markets enter a slow season. Naturally, it is too early to say whether sufficient landside capacity and efficiency improvements can be made to reduce congestion to pre-COVID levels, but we will assume that drag on effective capacity supply can be reduced to a maximum of 5 percent.” BIMCO Niels Rasmussen, Chief Shipping Analyst, BIMCO says: "Supply is driven by large ships, especially in the 15k+ TEU segment." Rasmussen is expecting profitabiity of carriers to fall back towards a lower level given higher bunker charges and lower forecasts of growth. What next? Indicators point to slower growth in demand for head-haul and regional trades during 2022 and 2023 than the industry was accustomed to pre-Covid. "Conversely, it appears that the fleet will on average grow faster over the two years than in the recent past, and faster than headhaul and regional trade demand." It, therefore, follows that the supply/demand balance will weaken, and this should lead to lower freight and charter rates as well as second-hand ship prices, the report said.

Infrastructure & related issues affecting Trade flows with India to be resolved soon : Minister of Foreign Affairs, The Islamic Republic of Iran in Mumbai India & Iran are active players in the INSTC corridor which has assumed greater importance in view of war between Russia and Ukraine Mumbai - The Hon’ble Minister of Foreign Affairs, The Islamic Republic of Iran, H E Dr Hossien AmirAbdollahian recently in Mumbai interacted with the Export-import Community on the upcoming trade opportunities in Iran. FIEO in association with UCO Bank organised this very important interactive session, which was also attended by some senior level dignitaries from Iran and about 200 exporters. Addressing the exporter’s community Hon’ble Minister of Foreign Affairs said that, “It is indeed a pleasure to be in India and amongst you all trade entrepreneurs today.” The Minister appreciated the presence of Women Entrepreneurs for the session and mentioned women entrepreneurs to be more successful trade facilitators. The Minister specially mentioned & appreciated the efforts of FIEO for organising the wonderful and spectacular show. Mentioning the strong trade and cultural ties of India and Iran, the Hon’ble Minister stated that, “The 1st ever diplomatic mission of Iran across the world was established in Mumbai and since then the relationship has nurtured and expanded gradually. This is with the determination of the diplomatic leadership of both the countries to further develop relationships not only in trade but also across all the strategic fronts. As a result of which the ties between the two nations have been strong, durable and long lasting. The Foreign Affairs Minister informed that during the meeting and interaction with the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, and the National Security Advisor, he discussed upon development of sustainable ties between two nations and concluded with certain strong and positive agreements. The Hon’ble Minister highlighted that, “The economies of India and Iran do not compete with each other; rather they complement each other.” During the meeting with the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India yesterday, a great emphasis on the ancient relationship of India and Iran was referred to and the Trade Community present today is a driving force of this relation. This trade relationship can be further endured by the Indian diaspora in Iran and vice-aversa. The Hon'ble Minister informed that during this meeting they would like to

Seen on the Dais (L-R) Shri Nandkishor Kagliwal, Regional Chairman, FIEO (WR), Shri Khalid Khan, Vice President, FIEO, Dr. A Sakthivel, President, FIEO, H.E. Dr. Houssien AmirAbdollahian, Hon'ble Minister of Foreign Affairs, Islamic Republic of Iran, H.E Dr Ali Chegeni, Ambassador, Embassy of Iran, New Delhi, Mr. A.M. Alikhani, Consul General, Consulate General of Iran, Mumbai and Mr. Ishraq Ali Khan, Executive Director, UCO Bank address the challenges and bottlenecks faced by the Trade Communities in India while doing trade with Iran. Iran will be providing all necessar y infrastructural facilities, one such effort on the infrastructural front is the Port of Chabahar. They would like to encourage the investment in this Port by the Iranian counterparts in India. He also informed that in continuation to the present visit, to develop the trade between the two countries a Delegation from Iran will be visiting India shortly. Earlier welcoming the Chief Guest and export-import Community, Shri Nandkishor Kagliwal, Regional Chairman, FIEO (WR) said, “There is a strong need of international political negotiations wherein sanctions on Iran may either be relaxed to some extent or an explicit interpretation of narrow exemption on Chabahar Port may be rolled out by US. This will strengthen the movement of cargo through the INSTC route. An attempt should be made to explore traditional mechanisms of trade like barter trade, so as to defeat the implication of sanctions.” During the keynote address, Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO said, “Both countries are looking for a Preferential Trade Agreement, with a focus on diversifying the bilateral trade basket to include manufacturing, services and light engineering items. The PTA will allow the two countries to cut tariffs on each other’s products. India & Iran are active players in the INSTC corridor which has assumed greater importance in view of war between Russia and Ukraine. There is a need to bring Chabahar also under the

INSTC so as to forge partnership with Afghanistan and Central Asian countries besides using the important route of Bandar Abbas. Indian exporters are keen to use the route which reduces voyage time to Central Asia by 40% and cost by 30%. Unfortunately, no single agency has come forward to provide an end to end solution to the logistics. The security of the cargo throughout the route has also been highlighted as a key concern. We will urge the Hon’ble Minister to look into the same and coordinate with other countries as well to push increasing cargo through this route.” Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Deputy Chairman, JNPA, provided a brief insight on the recent developments in the Port of Chabahar. Concluding the interactive session, Shri Khalid Khan, Vice President, FIEO mentioned, “Although the bilateral trade has declined over the past few years, what matters is the positive approach our governments have when it comes to strengthening and promoting our bilateral trade. Having a positive approach is the first step towards achieving positive outcomes.” He also stated, “Hon’ble Prime Minister always inspires us to find opportunities in difficulties and focus on solutions rather than problems. India-Iran trade is a real example to this, wherein both the nations always tried to find opportunities in their most difficult situation, and it assures that this spirit will continue for the years to come”. An informative interactive session on banking issues, sanctions and other shortcomings for the trade were discussed and responded to by the Iranian Officials.

No alternative to Multilateral Trading system; strong commitment to WTO only way forward : MoS Commerce NEW DELHI - The 12th BRICS Trade Ministers Meeting was held in virtual format recently. Smt. Anupriya Patel, MoS for Commerce and Industry represented India. Intervention of the MoS mainly touched upon certain burning and relevant issues requiring attention. D u r i n g C OV I D - 1 9 p a n d e m i c , digitalization has emerged as the key driver for global economic growth.Recognizing that Digital Economy is central to the promotion of innovation, pursuing entrepreneurial ventures, creation of jobs, efficiency in services and importantly a marketplace for high value technology based products and solutions and the fact that almost half the world’s population does not have access to high-speed broadband and is hence deprived of the access to virtual platforms, telemedicine, distance education and e-payments the MoS stressed upon

making the digital revolution inclusive by creating an environment where nobody is left behind. On supply chains MoS mentioned that the supply chain disruptions, as a result of lockdowns, limited economic activities and economic slowdown has forced manufacturers everywhere to reassess their supply chains. The main point of supply chain resilience is minimizing negative impacts on people's lives and the economy even in the event of supply chain disruptions caused by pandemics, natural disasters, or regional conflicts. In this context, the MOS highlighted the statement made by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi that Transparent, Trusted Sources and Timeframe is critical for improving global supply chain resilience which is imperative for trade revival. While acknowledging that trade should become the engine for reviving global growth, the MoS stated that there

is no alternative to the rules based multilateral trading system and that strong commitment to the WTO rules is the only way forward. The WTO reforms must strengthen the fundamental principles of the WTO including consensus-based decision making, inclusivity, equitable, nondiscrimination, special and differential treatment.

Container Transshipment hub is need of the hour: VPA Chairman V I S A K H A PAT N A M : Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) organised a trade meet as part of marketing initiative to improve cargo volumes through the port recently. Addressing over 130 participants and guests, VPA Chairman K. Ramamohana Rao said that the port has taken a number of measures to develop infrastructure and efforts are on to develop a container transhipment hub, which he said was the need of the hour. The Chairman said that during first two months of the current

financial year, VPA has handled 14.2 MT of cargo which is 6% more compared to the corresponding period last year. If things progress in this manner, we will be handling close to 72.72 MT in this year, he said. He also said that the port has already spent money to the tune of Rs. 237 crore under capital expenditure and will be spending around Rs. 208 crore in this year. Mr. Ramamohana Rao also spoke about the environmental measures being taken and its plans to minimise carbon footprint in the coming years. “In this financial year, VPA will be

planting 30,000 trees in the port area and we have developed a masterplan for improving the drainage system and upgrading the stockyards with an investment of Rs.60 crore,” he said. “Under the Bharatmala project, VPA and NHAI are developing road projects worth Rs. 1,054 crore to decongest roads and improve the last mile connectivity,” he said. DRM of East Coast Railway Anup Kumar Satpathy and Hanumantha Rao, Secretary Steam Ship Agents Association, also spoke at the event.

With export ban exceptions, India's wheat export forecast to be 7 MT in 2022/23: UN Food Agency, FAO NEW YORK - Exception to India's wheat export ban - for previous contractual commitments, Government-to-Government sales, and food security purposes - are expected to support an export forecast of 7 million tonnes in 2022/23, remaining well above India's export average over the past five years, the United Nations' food agency has said. T h e Fo o d a n d A g r i c u l t u r e Organisation (FAO) said in its Food Outlook released recently that global wheat markets are embarking on the 2022/23 season with a "great deal of uncertainty. “The impacts of the ongoing war in Ukraine, trade policy changes in several countries, and high international prices will shape much of the wheat market outlook," it said adding that international wheat prices are at levels not reached since

2008, following a season of tight global availability due to reduced harvests in some major exporting countries and export suspensions by others, including Ukraine (a major exporter) and India (an emerging exporter), and India (an emerging exporter), along with supply concerns for 2022/23 also adding pressure. Global wheat production in 2022 is predicted to decline from the 2021 record level by 0.8 per cent, reaching 771 million tonnes and marking the first drop in four years. Year-on-year falls in production in Australia, India, Morocco and Ukraine will likely outweigh expected increases in Canada, Iran and Russia. The report said that driving much of the predicted contraction in world trade in 2022/23, exports by Ukraine, a major wheat exporter, are forecast to fall by nearly 50 per cent (down 9 million tonnes) from the previous season based on the

assumption of continued war-related export disruptions. In India, a ban on wheat exports announced last month, "is also seen limiting shipments in 2022/23 after the country greatly increased its market share in 2021/22, amid lower exports from Ukraine, high domestic supplies following a record production in 2021, and competitive prices that helped to open trade with new markets, including Egypt and Vietnam. However, exceptions to the export ban for previous contractual commitments, Government-to-Government sales, and food security purposes are expected to support an export forecast of 7 million tonnes in 2022/23, remaining well above India's export average over the past fiveyears." Further, it said that in Asia, wheat production in India is forecast at 105.5 million tonnes, down nearly 4 per cent from the record crop gathered in 2021.

Hapag Lloyd’s extra loader boosts India-US Trade for disrupted shippers MUMBAI: Hapag-Lloyd’s Merkur Ocean, a 3,868 TEU vessel, is due to call at Nhava Sheva (JNPT) on 17 June, according to sources. The extra-loader has been deployed with the same rotation Hapag-Lloyd’s IN2 Ser vice provides on a weekly frequency, calling Port Qasim, Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, New York, Norfolk, Savannah, Charleston, New York and Port Qasim. IN2 is a joint string between Hapag-Lloyd and CMA CGM, the source said. “Since it is a Hapag-Lloyd-operated vessel, all bookings and loadings will be only for its customers,” a source at Hapag-Lloyd (India) said. “The combined available loading space from Nhava Sheva and Mundra is expected to be 1,400 TEU.” Cargo owners and forwarders have been wrestling with frequent sailing disruptions and cargo rollovers in the heavily unbalanced India-US tradelane, a concern amplified by Chennai-based 3PL Ligi Logistics. The company, in its latest market update, noted that all major carriers serving Indian trades are running low/tight on loading space and empty equipment availability, with rate levels changing constantly. “There is a minimum two -three rollovers in transhipment points (Colombo and Singapore), which is affecting the transit time per for mance for all destinations across the globe,” the forwarder said. “Ocean freight rates keep changing every fortnight and rates are still not stable.” The report also pointed to a scarcer scenario for

40ft and other hi-cube boxes than for 20ft standard units, putting shippers’ cargo stuffing plans in disarray. However, carrier leaders say they had pulled out all the stops to improve equipment flow and vessel capacity out of Indian ports amid rising export demand. “The Shipping Lines have already taken steps to increase the availability of both equipment as well as space ex-India,” Mr. Sunil Vaswani, Executive Director of the Container Shipping Lines Association (CSLA) was quoted as saying recently. “During the year 2021, 1.85 mn TEU of empty containers were repositioned into the country to cater to export demand.” “Besides, capacities ex-India were increased by about 33-35,000 TEU a week to global destinations. As far as the US is concerned, MSC increased its capacity and so did CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd between the West Coast of India and the USEC in 2021.” Mr Vaswani also noted that Shipping Lines remain committed to continue doing everything they can to serve the trade as seamlessly as possible. That extra effort is critical, as the India-US two-way trade saw substantial growth last fiscal year and is poised to see further momentum this year. As a result, the US in fiscal 2021-22 became India’s largest trading partner, with merchandise volumes by value soaring 49% to $119.42bn from $80.51bn a year earlier, according to available provisional data. However, according to market sources, the high-rate increases seen across Indian trades until a few months ago have taken a pause, bringing some rate stability signals.
