ANTWERP - 2022 was a year of challenges for Port of Antwerp-Bruges. Geopolitical tensions, theenergy crisis and ongoing disruptions in supply chains made their presence felt and, in addition to shifts within the various commodity flows, put sustained pressure on the container segment. This affected throughput, which was down 0.7% year-on-year to 286.9 million tons of cargo. However, the flood of new investments and projects confirms the attractiveness of the unified port and the added value ofthecomplementarity ofthetwoportplatforms.
The challenges were most palpable in container traffic. Global disruptions within container shipping, and the resulting congestion with peak call sizes and delays, put pressure on volumes throughout the year. In addition, the conflict in Ukraine caused a decrease in Russia-related traffic by 59%. And while operational challenges at container terminals and congestion have been slowly easing since the third quarter, high energy prices and economic uncertainty have caused a slowdown in demand for container traffic. As a result, container throughput fell 8.6% in tons and 5.2% in TEUs in 2022, compared with a strong 2021, back to prepandemic levels.
The war in Ukraine, the sanctions against Russia and the energy crisis greatly changed the energy landscape and flows in Europe, which translated into strong growth in bulk cargo. Dry bulk throughput increased by 13.8% in 2022. Coal throughput, in particular, experienced a sharp increase (+210%) due to the substantial rise in demand for coal powered generation. Fertilisers, however, declined by 18.3% due in part to sanctions on Russia and significantly higher fertiliser prices.
The liquid bulk segment grew 10%, mainly due to a 61.3% increase in demand for LNG as an alternative to natural gas via pipelines from Russia. There was also growth for LPG (+30%), gasoline (+7%), diesel/fuel oil (+9.9%) and naphtha (+7.5%). Chemicalsthroughput,whichhaditsbestyeareverin2021,began to decline in mid-2022 due to increased energy prices that put pressure on the European chemicals sector; volumes ended up withaslightdecreaseof1%comparedto2021.
After record figures in 2021, conventional breakbulk (+1.1%) heldupwellinthefirst halfoftheyearduetogrowth in the throughput of steel, the main commodity group within this segment. Starting in the third quarter, steel volumes declined asaresult oftheslowing economy.
Total roll-on/roll-off traffic saw an increase of 6.5%. More than 3.26 million new cars were handled in 2022, an annualised growth of 10.5%. Throughput of 'high & heavy' rolling stock increased by 9.6%, while throughput of used cars and trucks decreased by 13.2% and 17% respectively. Unaccompanied cargo (excluding containers) grew 10.0%, a significant portion of which was related to the United Kingdom (+4.9%) and Ireland (+35%).
In 2022, Zeebrugge welcomed 144 cruise ships with 547,374 passenger movements, a firm increase compared to the 23 ships and 75,854 passenger movements from last year when cruise shipping was largely at a standstill due to COVID-19. Meanwhile, calls have already been booked up to 2026 and beyond.
Thefloodofnewinvestmentsandprojectssincethemerger of the Antwerp and Zeebrugge port platforms confirms the attractiveness and added value of the unified port. The resilience of both port platforms has allowed important steps to be taken in projects that contribute to the port's sustainable growth and pioneering role in the energy transition. The projectsarereadytobefurtherrolledoutin2023throughunified efforts with partners. The hydrogen strategy to make the port a European hydrogen hub for the import, local production and throughput of green hydrogen and hydrogen carriers will be furtherrefined. The completion of the first part of the NextGen District, the future hotspot for the circular economy, is almost complete and the first spade will go into the ground in 2023. As part of the Port Authority's 'greening' of its fleet, the Hydrotug
and Methatug, the world's first hydrogen and methanolfuelled tugs, are making an appearance. And the Digital Twin, the digital copy of the port area with real-time info via sensors, drones and smart cameras, will be deployed on both platforms in 2023 to further build a smart, safe and smoothly-operated port.
Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO Port of Antwerp-Bruges: "2022 was, once again, an eventful year, with many logistical and geopolitical challenges. As a world port, we are at the centre of this drama and are holding up well. Thanks to the complementarity of both platforms, we can already see the added value of the merger and, as a unified port, we are much stronger in the face of future challenges. Moreover, with our strong international position, we can make a difference in challenges such as the energy transition. Together with our partners and thanks to financial support, such as the important European funding of 500 million euros for the Antwerp and Kairois@C projects, we can live up to our pioneering role and realise climate impact that reaches far beyond theport's borders."
Annick De Ridder, Vice-Mayor of the City of Antwerp and President of the Board of Directors of Port of Antwerp-Bruges: "The unified port is a global port that relies on a particularly close-knit port community. All employees and companies that make up this port community showed tremendous resilience and strong resilience over the past year. As a result, we achieved a strong result despite very big challenges. The merger is proving its added value in practice. We are confident that in 2023 we can continue to focus on sustainable economic growth; certainly thanks to the many investments announced by our companies. In this way, our portisandwillremain theeconomic engine ofFlanders."
Dirk De fauw, Mayor of the City of Bruges and Vice President ofPortofAntwerp-Bruges: "The fact that, despite the challenges, we also achieved so many successes in 2022 makes me very proud. First, of course, 2022 was the year of the merger and therefore a historic year. We have also seen important breakthroughs in the field of energy transition with, among other things, the hydrogen plant HyOffWind in Zeebrugge and the Warmtenet Antwerpen Noord. As a world port, however, we would like to do more than create prosperity and jobs. Therefore, we are fully committed to a sustainable future with our environment. The 'side by side' environmental communication campaign, the Connection Bridge, the transformation of Fort Filips and the Tall Ships Races are a fewgreat examples ofthis."
…Port of Antwerp-Bruges holds its own in a year full of geopolitical challenges

LONDON - Sales and purchases of container ships halved to 950,300 TEUs in 2022 as freight levels began normalising, accordingtoAlphaliner’slatestreport.
The scale of ship sales in the previous year was similar to levels seen in preCovidyears.
Alphaliner noted that 295 boxships were sold in2022, down 49%from 2021 and capacity-wise, representing a 53% drop from the record 2.04 million TEUs that changed hands in 2021. That said, MSC, which dethroned Maersk Line as the largest liner operator last year, remained themostactivebuyer.
In total, the world’s largest container line purchased 44% of the 950,300 TEUs sold during 2022, acquiring 92 vessels of 420,000 TEUs. French carrier CMA CGM
was the next most active buyer, snapping up31shipsof102,500TEUs.
On the contrary, tonnage providers were noticeably absent from the market, with SFL Corp.’s September 2022 purchase of two 2,500 TEU eco-design feeder container newbuildings from Goto Shipping the only deal to emerge during the year involving one of the 10 largest tonnageproviders.
As freight rates fell even more drastically in the last six months of 2022, shipsalesandpricesfellinproportion.
As a comparison, MSC paid US$85 million to buy the 2010-built 8,800 TEU Northern Jasper in October 2022, while a sistervessel,NorthernJupiter, wassoldto Maersk for a much higher US$133 million just four months earlier. Similarly, a 2007-
built classic Panamax ship is now valued at between US$20 million and US$25 million,comparedwithoverUS$70million inMay2022.
Alphaliner said, “Price prospects are unlikely to improve anytime soon, due to the looming overcapacity triggered by the monumental orderbook. As such, the market could hold interesting opportunities for buyers that have so far been excluded from the market due to the prohibitive cost of tonnage. Among them are smaller regional carriers and some non-operating owners, which could become more active in the next few months. At the same time, the largest buyers such as MSC are also expected to remain present in the market with selectiveacquisitions.”

NEW DELHI : Container cargo handled by India’s dozen State-owned ports grew by a paltry 1.22 percent between April and December this fiscal to 8.446 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from 8.344 million TEUs a year earlier, confirming predictions that the global containertradehasstartedtodipfrom theheightsseenduringthepandemic.
Barring Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Kamarajar Port, the other Stateowned Major Ports reported declining container volumes during theninemonthsofFY23.
“Containerized trade, the fastest growing segment for many years, is projected to grow at a tepid 1.2 per cent in 2022, before marginally picking up to 1.9 per cent in 2023. The projected deceleration is a consequence not just of pandemicinducedlockdowns, butalsoofstrong macroeconomic headwinds combined with a weakening in China’s economy. In addition, faced with rising inflation and living costs, consumers are spending less, while to some extent switching expenditure from goods to services,” the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
said in its ‘Review of Maritime Transport 2022’ released on 24Novemberlastyear.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port, India’s biggest State-owned Container gateway and the country’s second largest overall, handled 4.452 million TEUs from 4.177 million TEUs during the corresponding period last year. In effect, J N Port handled more than half of the container handled by the 12 ports during the April to December period.
Kamarajar Port Ltd handled 4,23,000 TEUs between April and December from 3,54,000 TEUs a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Ports,ShippingandWaterways.
Key container handling ports located at Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Cochin and Thoothukudi suffered volumedeclines.
Container volumes at Chennai Port declined to 1.1 million TEUs in the nine months from 1.207 million TEUs handled during the same periodlastyear.
V O Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi handled 5,53,000 TEUs from 5,93,000 TEUs, while Cochin Port handled 5,20,000 TEUs from 5,55,000TEUs.
Visakhapatnam Port handled 3,73,000 TEUs from 3,83,000 TEUs while Deendayal Port in Kandla handled 3,65,000 TEUs from 3,66,000 TEUs.
Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata handled 5,06,000 TEUs during April-December from 5,57,000TEUslastyear.
The total cargo, across categories, handled by all the 12 ports grew by 8.97 percent during April-December to 576.632 million tonnes (mt) from 529.160 mt last year.
The growth was contributed by a 35.84 percent rise in thermal and steamcoalshipmentsduringthenine monthsto97.464mtfrom71.748mt.
Cokingcoalvolumesjumped16.35 percent to 43.252 mt from 37.173 mt while petroleum, oil and lubricants (POL) cargo rose 7.7 percent to 175.078mtfrom162.562mt.
