Paradip Port Authority sets New Record with 41.12 MMT of Cargo handling in First 100 Days of FY 2024-25

PARADIP: Paradip Port Authority (PPA)

h a s m a r k e d a m o m e n t o u s achievement in its operational history,

c l o c k i n g a n u n p r e c e d e n t e d 41.12 Million Metric Tons (MMT) cargo handling within the first 100 days of the fiscal year 2024-25. This outstanding performance sets a new record for the port, reflecting a 4.78 per cent growth compared to the 39.25 MMT achieved during the same period in the previous fiscal year, FY 2023-24.

This significant accomplishment underscores the port’s critical role in b o l s t e r i n g I n d i a ’ s m a r i t i m e infrastructure and its unwavering

c o m m i t m e n t t o e n h a n c i n g operational efficiency and capacity.

Under the dynamic leadership and visionary guidance of Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, PPA has surpassed its previous benchmarks, showcasing notable growth and efficiency in its operations.

PPA Chairman, P.L. Haranadh, expressed his deep gratitude to the Minister, attributing this monumental success to his unwavering support and strategic direction.

This achievement highlights Paradip Port Authority’s ongoing c o m m i t m e n t t o s e t t i n g n e w benchmarks in cargo handling and contributing significantly to the nation’s economic growth.

As PPA continues to expand its capabilities and improve its services, it remains dedicated to supporting India’s maritime infrastructure and fostering economic development.

San Fernando docks at Vizhinjam International Seaport

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Containership, 'San Fernando', from China, berthed at Kerala's Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) recently marks the first arrival of such a vessel at India's largest transhipment port. The mothership was given a water salute by four tugs, which piloted it to the dock.

San Fernando, a 300-meter-long cargo ship, will offload 1,900 containers at VISL on Friday, 12th July with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launching the port's first phase of operations.

The mothership carries large containers which will be transferred to other ships and later transported to other ports in the country and abroad.

The inaugural ceremony will be attended by several dignitaries, including Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Central and State Ministers, Officials, and members of the public.

"The dream is approaching the shore. The first mothership is reaching Kerala's Vizhinjam port. San Fernando will be officially welcomed on behalf of Kerala today (12th July),"

Vijayan in Facebook post said.

Equipped with modern equipment and advanced automation and IT systems, Vizhinjam will become India's first semi-automated port, expected to be fully commissioned in September or October 2024.

"It is a natural port with depths between 20 and 24 meters. We have found that the ocean bottom here is rocky, which is very rare. Elsewhere, we would have to dredge to attain such depths," Kerala Minister for Ports and Cooperatives V N Vasavan said.

Vizhinjam hopeful of setting new benchmark in turnaround time

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The long-awaited Vizhinjam international seaport, India’s first deep-water container transshipment port, is all set to put India on the map of global sea trade, scripting a new chapter in the global maritime trade. However, the port will have to carve its niche by competing with port majors like Colombo, Singapore, or Port Klang. A cursory glance through the infrastructure and technical prowess of these ports will reveal that Vizhinjam has a long way to go.

For instance, Singapore and Colombo ports handled 36.8 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) and 6.85 million TEUs of containers in 2020, whereas the projected capacity of Vizhinjam in the first phase is just 1 million The turnaround time of vessels, one of the key parameters, that determines the competitiveness of a port, was relatively high in India, largely due to the complex customs clearanceassociatedwiththebusiness.

However, according to the latest figures available with the Shipping Ministry, the Indian ports have recently achieved a “turnaround

time” of 0.9 days, as per the World Bank’s logistic performance index report for 2023. This is better than the U S A (1 5 days), UAE (1 1 days) Singapore (1.0 days), Russian Federation (1.8 days), Malaysia (1.0), Ireland (1.2 days), Indonesia (1.1 days), New Zealand (1.1 days) and South Africa (2.8 days).

Less than a day

According to sources close to Vizhinjam port, the turnaround time would be less than one day in Vizhinjam. However, the exact details would be available only after the successful start of commercial operations, they said.

Vizhinjam also has certain limitations in offering competitive rates for shipping lines in the beginning compared to Colombo or Singapore However, the major attraction of Vizhinjam is its proximity to international shipping r o u t e s a n d i t s d e e p d r a f t For instance, the minimum voyage time to Vizhinjam port from the Seuz route, which accounts for a significant share of the global container traffic between the U.S., Europe, and Asia, is

around 0.5 to 1 hour, almost equal to the time to Colombo port. On the other hand, all the other ports on the west and east coasts of the country require a voyage of more than 5 hours from the shipping route, said sources.

Insufcient draft

Plus, with global shipping majors preferring ports with an 18-metre or more draft, Vihinjam , with an approximately 20-metre draft, is a major attraction for shipping lines. Even the neighbouring Cochin and V O C h i d a m b a r a n a r Po r t i n Thoothukudi have an insufficient d r a f t o f 1 4 5 m a n d 1 4 2 m , respectively. With state-of-the-art infrastructure, Vizhinajm can now handle the largest mother ships in operation.

Further, considering the fact that Indian ports handle around 10% of transshipment cargo out of the total container traffic volume the ports handle every year, Vizhinjam can reduce the dependence of the exportimport communities on the foreign transshipment hubs of Singapore, Colombo, and Port Klang in Malaysia, said the sources.

warehousing space in India’s major cities in FY2025: Report

MUMBAI: India’s industrial and warehouse logistics park (IWLP) sector is poised for substantial growth in FY2025, with supply projected to increase by 13-14% year-on-year (YoY) across the eight primary markets, r e a c h i n g a p p r o x i m a t e l y 424 million square feet, according to estimates by ICRA This growth is driven by robust consumption-led demand, which is expected to boost absorption rates to 47 million square feet in FY2025, up from 37 million square feet in Fy2024.

Vacancy rates in these key markets stood at 10% in FY2024 and are anticipated to remain stable in the upcoming fiscal year The sector’s e x p a n s i o n i s a t t r i b u t e d t o t h e government’s recognition of logistics a n d w a r e h o u s i n g a s c r i t i c a l infrastructure, the rapid growth of e-commerce and allied services, and efforts to position India as a global manufacturing hub.

Tushar Bharambe, Assistant Vice President and Sector Head of C o r p o r a t e R a t i n g s a t I C R A , highlighted the impressive growth of Grade A warehouse stock, which has

expanded at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21% over the past five years to reach 183 million square feet in FY2024. This trend is set to continue, with an estimated 19-20% YoY increase in FY2025. Of the 35 million square feet of new Grade A supply anticipated for FY2025, around 29 million square feet are expected to be absorbed. This would increase the share of Grade A stock in the total warehousing supply from 49% at the end of the last fiscal year to 51% by March 2025.

International players such as CPPIB, GLP , Blackstone, ESR, Allianz, GIC, and the CDC Group account for over 50-55% of India’s Grade A warehouse stock, driven by the growing preference for modern, efficient, and ESG-compliant facilities.

The third-party logistics (3PL) and manufacturing sectors continue to d o m i n a

representing approximately 65% of the total leased area as of March 2024, while the e-commerce sector accounts for 15%.

Among the eight primary markets, Mumbai and Delhi-NCR stand out, contributing around 42% of the

warehousing stock as of March 2024, w

remaining healthy at around 90% Despite these favorable conditions, the sector faces challenges, notably the steep rise in land prices. This issue is prompting a shift towards Tier-II and Tier-III cities, which offer more cost-effective solutions for new Grade A warehousing developments.

L o o k i n g a h e a d t o F Y 2 0 2 5 , Bharambe noted that the credit profiles of operators are expected to remain stable, underpinned by high occupancy levels and anticipated rental escalations, which will drive rental income and net operating income (NOI) growth by 30-32% YoY Although gross debt is projected to increase by 11-13% to fund underconstruction capacities, leverage ratios are expected to improve Debt to NOI is forecasted to be in the range of 5 3-5 5x by March 2025, down from 6 3x in March 2024, supported by healthy NOI growth. Coverage indicators, measured by the Debt Service Coverage Ratio (DSCR), are expected to improve to 1 5-1 6 times in FY2025 from 1 4 times in FY2024
