Maersk India records 43% growth in the Exports Rail Movement of Containerised Cargo in 2021 MUMBAI: The global logistics ecosystem has been disrupted from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The restrictions brought about by the pandemic affected manufacturing as well as the movement of cargo. Supply chains came crumbling down with uncertainties for which there was no playbook to refer from. Demand and supply patterns shifted dramatically, further adding to the disruptions in the system. Maersk India records 43% growth in the Exports Rail Movement of Containerised Cargo in 2021 Maersk’s 13 new weekly dedicated rail services launched in India in 2021 deliver speed, efficiency, hinterland connec vity, and predictability to customers’ supply chains in the uncertainty of disrupted logis cs ecosystem. Cont’d. from Pg. 3

The 13 new services offered by Maersk

At such a time, the logistics suppliers kept the wheels spinning for economies to stay on track as much as possible. Maersk had all its vessels sailing, warehouses functioning, and ports operating. However, it was not smooth sailing as conditions remained foggy with wavering developments around the spread of the pandemic. One particular challenge that Maersk faced during this period in India was moving cargo on landside – from manufacturers facilities to the port for exports or vice versa for imports. Truck drivers had returned to their home towns in fear of the virus, and state border transport became a big hurdle with inconsistent rules being implemented across different states. At the same time, in line with the goal of creating integrated solutions for customers that go end-to-end, teams within Maersk started focusing on understanding customer requirements and designing tailor-made solutions. Increasingly moving cargo on rail instead of the road was one such solution. Using rail to move cargo had multiple benets for Maersk’s customers: • Up to 30% quicker transit times as compared to road transport • Solid, unhindered connectivity between ports and manufacturing hubs • Scheduled movement for better predictability • Around 14.5 MT lower carbon footprint

As Maersk started developing customised solutions for customers rather than offering them off-the-shelf options, deeper insights into customers’ needs and challenges started unfolding. Using this data, Maersk developed 13 new weekly dedicated rail services of which some were based on the ‘assured transit’ concept on the Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC). These rail services were designed in such a way that different industrial verticals were to be connected to the ports. Examples of these were the ‘Automotive Express’ running between the Northern Capital Region’s (NCR) automotive manufacturing hub and the port of APM Terminals Pipavav, Gujarat or the ‘Retail Express’ that ran on DFC to give assured transit time to lifestyle and apparels sector. The benefits of dedicated solutions like ‘Retail Express’ were multi-fold – customers could reduce their inventory hold by almost 10% and be able to connect to ocean transportation leg in time, saving them penalty costs too. Maersk became the pioneer of offering ‘Assured transit

times’ with its rail solutions to customers. The forwardlooking solutions developed are expected to aid the rising demand for sectors such as eCommerce through dedicated services. eCommerce, which has traditionally run on road transit, is expected to move towards rail even more in the near future as it gives assured transit for time-sensitive cargo. “Being committed to connecting and simplifying our customers’ supply chains meant we had to go beyond solutions that are on the menu card. We wanted to create exciting offerings that would delight our customers, especially in the tough pandemic situation that we have been operating in”, said Vikash Agarwal, Managing Director, Maersk South Asia. He added, “Having flagged off 13 new services successfully over the year, Maersk is truly proud to have designed and implemented what customers needed. And it doesn’t end there – with the new environment-friendly rail services, in 2021 we reduced carbon footprint that is equivalent to the emissions from a car being driven for around 60,000 km.” Maersk witnessed 43% growth in the movement of containerised export cargo on rail in 2021 and 23% growth on rail for import and export combined. “Unlocking the potential of rail solutions to move cargo during the toughest times of the pandemic has been hugely satisfying. To be able to play a role in developing tailor-made solutions for customers which ultimately helped the traders in the country connect to the global market was even more gratifying”, said Akshyat Bhatia, Head of Landside Transportation, Maersk South Asia. Maersk plans to develop further on the foundation of the rail solutions in 2022. “Rail has always been considered as a second alternative to road transport despite being safer and faster. Last year we have created 273 new corridors with rail as the backbone and connected our customers on this highly efficient mode of logistics all the way to their hubs of convenience. Having carried more than 50,000 containers (twenty feet equivalent units / TEUs) over and above the previous year and having covered 150,000 km, we are confident of building on this solution in the coming years too,“ said Jyoti Mitter, Rail Product Manager, Maersk South Asia.

APEDA working in collaboration with State Governments, farmers and others to boost honey exports N E W D E L H I : To harness export potential of honey in line with the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘Sweet Revolution’ through promotion of beekeeping and allied activities, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has been giving thrust on boosting exports through ensuring quality production and market expansion to newer countries. At present, India’s natural honey exports are majorly dependent on one market - the United States, which accounts for more than 80 per cent of the exports.

“ We a r e w o r k i n g i n c l o s e collaboration with the state government, farmers and other stakeholders in the value chain to boost exports to other countries and regions such as the United Kingdom, European Union and South East Asia,” Dr M Angamuthu, Chairman, APEDA said. India is also renegotiating the duty structure imposed by various countries for boosting honey exports. APEDA has been facilitating honey producers in accessing export markets besides availing government assistance under different schemes, quality certification and lab testing. APEDA is working with the exporters to deal with the challenges

such as higher freight cost, limited availability of containers in peak honey export season, higher Nuclear Magnetic Resonance test costs and inadequate export incentives. India exported 59,999 metric tonnes (MT) of natural honey worth Rs. 716 crore (US $ 96.77 million) during 2020-21, with the United States taking a major share at 44,881 MT. Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh and Canada were the other top destinations for Indian honey. India started its first organized exports in the year 1996-97. World honey exported in 2020 is 736,266.02 MT. India ranks 8th and 9th in the world in honey producing and exporting countries respectively.

India's cotton exports begin to slide as premiums jump on lower crop NEW DELHI: Indian cotton exports have begun to slide as premiums over benchmark U.S. futures have jumped on expectations of lower output at a time when there is strong demand from locall textile mills, industry officials said. The higher premiums sought by India, the world's biggest cotton producer, could force Asian buyers such as Bangladesh, Vietnam and China to increase purchases from other suppliers such as the United States, Brazil, Australia and African nations. "Exports are nonviable. We are selling a small amount to Bangladesh,

but other buyers are not purchasing," Vinay Kotak, Director at Mumbai-based Kotak Ginning and Pressing Industries Pvt. Ltd told Reuters. Indian cotton is being offered at around 135 cents per lb, cost and freightbasis, to buyers in Bangladesh for January and February shipment, nearly 20 cents over U.S. futures, dealers with global trading firms said. Usually, India charges a premium of 5 to 10 cents/lb over U.S. futures. Record domestic prices could stifle exports in the 2021/22 marketing year e n d i n g o n S e p t . 3 0 , Ko t a k s a i d .

He predicted India will ship just 4 million bales compared to 7.8 million bales a year ago as buyers switch to rival suppliers. Indian mills have exported 1.8 million bales so far in the season and are likely to ship around 1 million bales in January and February, dealers said. India imported 1 million bales in 2020/21 and in the current season traders have contracted to import 700,000 bales, the New Delhi based dealer said. The country needs to import 2.5 million bales this year to arrest further gains in local prices, the dealer said.

12th JANUARY 2022 15

Exporters worried over surging Freight Rates, delays at Ports MUMBAI: Freight rates have started increasing once again after remaining steady in December, rising 10% in the first week of January, raising fresh concerns for exporters of basmati rice, tea, apparel and leather goods among others. The waiting time of consignments at ports has also increased to more than a month from 15 days, trade insiders said. Mohit Agarwal, Director at Asian Tea & Exports, said freight rates to places like Iran and Kazakhstan have gone up by $500-1,000 per container over the last 10 days. "We do not know what is driving this fresh surge in freight rates," he said. “The consignments are lying at the ports for a month or more at times." Agarwal said he does not see freight rates cooling off in the immediate future.

Some exporters said that they plan to pass on the rising cost to consumers eventually. "The container freight rates have gone up by 3-4 times as compared to last year. This cost will eventually be passed on to consumers in the coming days," said Ashwani Arora, CEO of LT Foods that owns rice brand Daawat. "However, we are not seeing any delay in delivery time to the consumer since LT Foods has made investment in automation, which has reduced the turnaround time of the container," he said. Ramesh Juneja, regional chairman of Council Leather Exports, however, said leather goods exporters are not sure whether they will be able to pass on the rising freight cost

to buyers in Europe and the US as there is a lot of uncertainty due to the spread of Covid-19. Exporters also raised concern over demand. "Rising freight cost is a global phenomenon," said Ajay Sahai, Director `general of Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO). "However, what is more important is how the export markets behave in the next fortnight in view of a surge in Covid cases." India achieved its highest-yet monthly exports of $37 billion in December, registering a jump of 37% year on year. The government has said the country is on track to achieve an export target of $400 billion, adding that the top 10 major commodity groups constituting 80% of exports grew 41% year on year last month.

PLI scheme may help Railway exporters NEW DELHI : Global mobility major Alstom expects the Indian government to maintain focus on infrastructure development in the upcoming budget with higher allocation for capital expenditure. Alain Spohr, Managing Director, Alstom India & South Asia, said the expectation of higher capital expenditure (capex) is in line with the priority accorded to infrastr ucture

projects by the government such as the National Infrastructure Pipeline and PM Gati Shakti (National Master Plan for Multi-modal Connectivity). “An enhanced capital outlay to encourage railway modernisation plans for creation of infrastructure as well as replacing railway passenger and freight fleets would be ideal. Special emphasis on multi-modal connectivity with enhanced

opportunities under PPP mode is expected to boost activity in this sector," Spohr said, detailing his expectations from the Union Budget for 2022-23. Alstom also said that railways can be at the forefront of providing fillip to the central government's Make in India programme, incentivising foreign investments and delivering a big boost to the economy.

MOL acquires AIP for Ammonia Bunkering Vessel Toward Realizing Ammonia Bunkering Business in Singapore TOKYO: Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) announced that the c o m p a n y, a l o n g w i t h I T O C H U Corporation (ITOCHU, President & COO: Keita Ishii; Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo) acquired Approval in Principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping regarding an ammonia bunkering vessel.

The project is part of a joint development study on ammonia fuel supply chain in Singapore (Note 1). MOL, which already has acquired experience and knowledge of LNG bunkering vessels, will play a leading role in this project together with its partners in the LNG bunkering business in Singapore-TotalEnergies Marine Fuels Pte. Ltd. and Pavilion Energy Singapore Pte. Ltd. MOL and ITOCHU jointly designed the ammonia bunkering vessel in cooperation with Sembcorp Marine Integrated Yard Pte. Ltd., and after conducting a risk assessment (Hazard Identification Study: HAZID) with the partners in Singapore, applied for and received the AIP.

The vessel's design incorporates extensive safety measures in consideration of ammonia's toxicity. Marine engine manufacturers around the world are working to develop an ammonia-fueled engine. Delivery of the first ammonia-fueled vessel is expected in the late 2020s at the earliest. The ammonia bunkering vessel, which we jointly developed, will supply these next-generation-fueled vessels. Ammonia is in the spotlight as a promising nextgeneration clean energy source that produces no carbon dioxide (CO2) during combustion. MOL is working to develop ammonia-fueled vessels and create an ammonia transport business, in the hopes of launching net zero emission ocean-going vessels during the current decade and achieving net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, as stated in the "MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.1." At the same time, MOL will contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions not only in our group business but also in society through initiatives such as the development of an ammonia fuel bunkering vessel that supplies ammonia fuel to other vessels and establishing an ammonia supply chain.

PIL Implements Charges for Misdeclaration of Dangerous Goods SINGAPORE: PIL has informed in an recent communique that it is taking steps to reinforce its safety practices to protect its crew, ships and cargo. “We would like to inform you that, with effect from the date of this notice, as part of PIL / carrier’s tariff, a charge of USD 30,000.00 per container globally will be imposed upon the shipper and/or consignee for any misdeclaration of dangerous and hazardous cargoes / goods (DG Goods). Misdeclaration includes but is not limited to incorrect/partial declaration, late declaration, alteration or omission of such declaration. “In addition to this charge, we wish to highlight that

amongst others, the shipper and consignee will be held liable and responsible for all corrective measures, claims, fines, liabilities, losses, delays, damages or expenses arising in consequence of such misdeclaration. Please also refer to PIL’s bill of lading terms and conditions. “We also wish to highlight that failure to properly declare DG Goods constitutes a breach of contract which also violates the applicable law, endangers lives, causes significant economic losses and adversely affects the operations of the entire supply chain. “As such, we require our valued customers to correctly declare all DG Goods. We greatly appreciate your support and cooperation in our efforts to maintain a safe supply chain,” concludes the company statement.

Mobile Science and Maths Lab launched by APM Terminals Pipavav

PIPAVAV: APM Terminals Pipavav inaugurated a Mobile Science and Maths lab for local students this week. The “lab on wheels” set up by APM Terminals Pipavav will enable local village students to perform science and maths experiments to gain practical insights and hone scientific skills. The lab will facilitate experiments on various topics in addition to sky watching, block level science and a maths exhibition and will offer hands-on understanding to the students. Around ten thousand students and 200 teachers will benefit from this initiative and it will create awareness about Science and Technology among locals. The Mobile Lab was inaugurated by Captain P K Mishra, COO, APM Terminals Pipavav in the presence of Sarpanch, Block Resource Co-ordinator and locals. This is another step towards APM Terminals Pipavav meeting its objective of empowering the local community and students in their quest for knowledge. Together with Sanitation and Health, Female Empowerment, and Infrastr ucture Development, Education and Skill Development are key focus areas for the Ports vision of “Uplifting Communities around us”. Over the years, the port

has helped to improve the livelihoods of local villagers and has been a major catalyst in the lives of the community living in and around the port.
