P&O Ferrymasters builds new 10,000m2 warehouse at Genk in Belgium to offer port-centric logistics solutions DUBAI: P&O Ferrymasters today announces it has entered into an agreement with Belgium-based Genk Green Logistics to build a 10,000 square metre state-of-the-art warehouse near the Port of Genk in Belgium, further enhancing its pan-European rail, road and warehousing network at a critical time for international trade and economic recovery. The new facility – strategically located near the port which is in the heart of Flanders' industrial belt - is equipped with world-leading Warehouse Management Systems and will enable customers to increase efficiency, have better visibility of their goods and expand storage capacity in their end-to-end supply chains. The warehouse is ideally positioned to accommodate the import and export of goods requiring storage for international deep-sea routes and to the United Kingdom via both the English Channel and North Sea. The site's outstanding multimodal transport links – including access to the Albert Canal and direct barging to P&O Ferrymasters' parent company DP World's terminal at Antwerp – will facilitate existing customers' export of highvalue industrial products to consumers throughout Europe and via onward connections to Russia, China and the United States. As part of the global DP World and P&O Ferrymasters commitment to sustainability, the warehouse will be constructed on a carbon neutral site and designed to meet the 'excellent rating' of BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method). Mark Mulder, P&O Ferrymasters' Contract Logistics Director, said: "This new warehouse capacity at Genk is a vital addition to our port-centric logistics strategy and growing pan-European intermodal network. Specifically tailored to meet the evolving requirements of customers, the facility will provide the greater operational flexibility and
capacity required to reinforce resilience in crucial, timesensitive supply chains." "P&O Ferrymasters' ongoing development in Genk presents an ideal opportunity for prospective customers which need fast and reliable links to their markets. International trade is changing fast as we emerge from the pandemic and port-centric logistics will benefit the large number of businesses looking to reconfigure their supply chains." P&O is a leading pan-European ferry and logistics group at the heart of the Europe's economy and a part of DP World, the leading provider of smart logistics solutions and enabler of the flow of trade across the globe. P&O Ferries is a major provider of freight transport and passenger travel services, sailing on eight major routes between Britain, France, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Holland and Belgium. Working closely with P&O Ferries, Its logistics business P&O Ferrymasters operates integrated road and rail links to countries across the continent including Italy, Poland, Germany, Spain and Romania, and facilitates the onward movement of goods to Europe from Asian countries via the Silk Road.

Exports jump 52.39% to $7.71 billion during June 1st - 7th Cont’d. from Pg. 1
Total exports from June 1-7 stood at $7.71 billion while imports came in at $9.1 billion in the same period. Petroleum and crude oil imports surged by 135% to $1.09 billion. Imports of electronic goods and pearls, precious and semi-precious stones increased by
45.85 per cent to $324.77 million and 111 per cent to $294 million respectively. E x p o r t s t o t h e U S , UA E a n d Bangladesh rose by about 60 per cent to $500 million, 57.86 per cent to $173 million and 212 per cent to $166.3 million respectively. Similarly, imports from China, the
US, and UAE grew by 90.94 per cent to USD 809.53 million, 89.45 per cent to $410.65 million and 164.55 per cent to about $400 million respectively. India's exports grew by 67.39 per cent to $32.21 billion in May, driven by healthy growth in sectors such as engineering, and petroleum products.
Exports rise leads to higher Container prices across Major Ports : Analysts MUMBAI: As the world economy recovers from COVID-19 disruptions and demand for exports rises, container prices at major ports, such as Chennai, Mundra and Nhava Sheva, remain high. India’s exports grew by 67.39 percent to $32.21 billion in May from $19.24 billion in the same month last year, driven by healthy growth in sectors such as engineering, pharmaceuticals, petroleum products, and chemicals, according to government data released on June 2. Exports were at $29.85 billion in May 2019. “Trading volumes have risen in the past two months, and they are expected to remain high for the next few months as a number of companies look to supply the pent-up demand in other countries,” a Mumbai-based shipping analyst said. Demand for exports, especially vaccines, medical equipment like masks, personal protective equipment kits, and oxygen concentrators, has risen in the past few months, shipping companies said. “Many companies are likely to get
into bidding wars to extradite their export and import cargo, and this is likely to lead to higher tariffs,” another Mumbai-based shipping analyst said. Demand for white goods has also picked up in the last few months, companies said. “As the world economy opens up, especially the US and European markets, people aren’t able to spend on holidays because of the pandemic, and they have built up quite nice disposable incomes, and that has gone into consumer goods,” the second analyst added. Furthermore, as the world economy reopens in the aftermath of COVID-19, a growing shortage of raw materials is also wreaking havoc on global supply chains, thereby creating pent-up demand, market experts said. “Trading volumes have risen in the past two months, and they are expected to remain high for the next few months as a number of companies look to supply the pent-up demand in other countries,” a Mumbai-based shipping analyst said.

Indian Logistics sector poised for growth ahead : Analysts MUMBAI: Even after a stupendous rally in the shares of logistics companies in the past year that saw stock prices of frontline players jump as much as 270 per cent, analysts have toned down their return expectation. While they remain bullish on the sector as they see it as a big beneficiary of the ‘re-opening of the economy’ theme, with pent-up demand expected to drive growth, they suggest investors be choosy and buy stocks of companies that have revenue visibility and balance-sheet strength. Besides traditional avenues for growth, cold chain supply solutions for the pharma and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector can result in big opportunities for the space, they said. “Vaccine partnerships will be a nearterm booster for the sector and are sentimentally positive, but the real kicker is the sharp uptick in the e c o n o m i c a c t i v i t y, w h i c h w i l l structurally drive the logistics sector,” said Siddhartha Khemka, head of retail research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services. The second wave of the pandemic is largely behind India with daily cases at
two-month low. Given this, some of the states have started to unlock and the focus has now shifted to vaccinating citizens at an aggressive pace. As the economy opens, analysts believe pentup demand for goods and services will play out. “Whenever one talks about the boom in the logistic sector, it directly indicates an upshift in business growth and ultimately expectations of higher GDP. The pent-up demand in many sectors, especially manufacturing, agri, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and metals will require higher transportation of raw material, semi-finished and finished goods. This will become a major driving force for the sector,” said Vishal Wagh, research head at Bonanza Portfolio. New avenues Growing demand for cold chain logistics has also become a boon for the sector, with companies foraying into new services that analysts say can result in a big boost to their business model. The Indian cold supply chain sector, according to reports, is set to grow at a CAGR of 17-18 per cent till 2022. While growth will be driven by the
government-led Covid immunisation programme, the growing e-commerce market for FMCG, dairy, meat and fish, will also help propel the sector significantly, given the ongoing virus threat, reports suggest. To tap into this opportunity, TCI Express in the March quarter launched a ‘Cold Chain Express Ser vice’. Meanwhile, Snowman Logistics has already bagged a deal from DRL to provide temperature-controlled end-toend logistics solutions for the delivery of the Sputnik Covid-19 vaccine. AC manufacturer Blue Star recently launched a new range of refrigeration products and solutions which it said are ideal for storing vaccines. “Vaccination is a recurring theme and more players are seeking manufacturing opportunities. Currently, the market is small but the business is expected to increase going ahead. Logistics has been a key focus area of the government. GST, National Logistics Policy and other structural steps will lead to increase in market share of organised players and result in the long-term growth of the sector,” said Ronald Siyoni, AVP- Sharekhan.

EU, India trade agreement to benefit domestic exporters: TPCI NEW DELHI: The proposed free trade agreement between India and the European Union would benefit domestic exporters as EU is one of the biggest traditional markets for the country, TPCI said recenty. Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) organised a panel discussion on India-EU trade relations, where experts discussed the proposed pact. ‘Industry is upbeat with hope and optimism over India – EU ensuing trade pact,’ it said in a statement, adding that for most Indian products, EU is one of the biggest traditional markets where exporters see a big turnaround post the agreement. Quoting experts, the
council said issues like movement of professionals, duty cut on goods such as alcoholic beverages, automobiles and dairy products may see tough negotiations. Experts stated that the decision to resume talks for the agreement between India and the EU was a positive development as it will benefit both the sides. Arpita Mukherjee, professor at ICRIER, proposed innovative ways of tariff liberalisation and stated that dairy is a complex issue since both the EU and India are large dairy markets with steady rise in production. ‘India needs to deeply study EU-
Vietnam and EU-MERCOSUR agreements to see what these partners gave to the EU and got in return. They are India’s competitors in the EU today, and much better placed there due to their agreements,’ Mukherjee was quoted as saying. Rupa Chanda, RBI Chair Professor in Economics, said India retains its unique advantages for trade partners as its large market and human resource base, role in pharma production, manufacturing and emerging startup ecosystem are quite unparalleled. In 2020, India’s export to EU was USD 38.43 billion, while imports stood at USD 33.4 billion.
Maharashtra emerges as top exporter of Bananas PUNE: Maharashtra has become the country ’s largest exporter of bananas between April 2020 and February 2021, with exports crossing 1.34 lakh tonne. The country’s banana exports have crossed 1.91 lakh tonne in the same period. In the South, Kerala has exported 18,868.14 tonne, followed by Tamil Nadu at 6,280.52 tonne. Uttar Pradesh has exported 20,924.93 tonne, while West Bengal has exported 3,532.77 tonne. Maharashtra’s exports have been valued at Rs 455.50 crore, while Kerala’s exports of the commodity are valued at Rs 103.87 crore. The total value of banana exports for this period is around Rs 615.8 crore. Govind Hande, technical advisor, Maharashtra Agriculture Department, pointed out that although Maharashtra cultivates banana on 90,000 hectare as
compared to 8 lakh hectare across the country and the variety grown by the state is popular in export markets. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh are other major banana growers. This season, there is demand for bananas grown in Parbhani and Nanded districts. Jalgaon, Kolhapur and Solapur are major banana-growing regions in Maharashtra but 20-30% of the crop here has been damaged due to rains, he said. So far, around 1,600 containers (each container has 20 tonne capacity) has been shipped out of Jalgaon region. Indian bananas are in great demand in Iran, Iraq, Muscat and Bahrain and also Europe to some extent. Exporters received a maximum of `1,700 per quintal and minimum of `1,200 per quintal this season. Around
580 containers have been exported from Sahada taluka in Nandurbar district. In 2019, around 700 containers were exported from Jalgaon in addition to some 200 tonne from Nanded district to Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Dubai and Oman. Hande said that the crop has been now been included in ‘traceability’ system set up by the Centre for the export of grapes, pomegranates, mangoes, vegetables and citrus fruits. Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda) has developed a software called ‘Banana Net’ and the implementation of the system will begin from July 1. Maharashtra accounts for nearly 70% most of the country’s banana exports and the establishment of Banana Net is expected to give it a boost.
Global Shipping leaders prepare for hybrid model of working post-pandemic LONDON: Maritime recruitment agency Faststream has released results of a global survey of senior shipping executives looking at how the pandemic has impacted daily working lives ashore. The results show clearly many long term trends emerging from the enforced lockdowns of the past months – the days of nine to five, Monday to Friday in the office appear to be coming to a close. 91% of those surveyed in for the Senior Maritime Executive report view the future of work as a hybrid model between office and remote working. This debate about office hours postpandemic is being discussed across all industries. A survey released recently by global real estate firm JLL found that a strong majority of office workers in 10 countries around the world would like a post-pandemic future that allows them to easily mix in-person and remote work, with many preferring a schedule of roughly three days a week in the office, and the rest of the week
somewhere else. Likewise, Microsoft’s 2021 recently published Work Trend Index outlines findings from a study of more than 30,000 people in 31 countries which show over 70% of workers want flexible remote work options to continue. About 60% of HR leaders surveyed by research firm Gartner last month said they are planning for a hybrid work future, and only 1% said they expect all of their workers to return to work full time in the office. “Leading organisations are recognizing the importance of still maintaining some form of in-person interaction, without the need to mandate a full return onsite,” commented Alexia Cambon, director of research in Gartner’s HR practice. “Effective hybrid work means correcting the balance between one extreme of the spectrum—being fully co-located—and the other extreme— being fully distributed. Effective hybrid working means becoming intentional a b o u t h o w, w h e r e a n d w h e n t o
collaborate across multiple modes of working.” Returning to the the Faststream survey, another key finding was that 78% of senior maritime executives agree that the pandemic has changed the way employees expect to be led. “The empowerment created by remote working is making employees more confident to speak up, tell their managers and leaders what they need and how they want to work in the future,” said Mark Charman, CEO and founder of Faststream Recruitment. The Faststream report suggests leaders can no longer simply try to adapt and survive but have had to make the switch to a new thrive mindset, making changes to their skillsets and enabling effective management of their employees. “Communication, empathy and remote leadership have been the top trends of this time and we see employees continuing to demand that these styles continue in the workplace,” Charman suggested.

Welspun One’s flagship Bhiwandi project becomes India’s 1st Pre-certified Platinum rated Green project under IGBC MUMBAI: Since its inception, Welspun One Logistics Parks, a pan-India integrated fund, development, a n d a s s e t management platform has ingrained ESG (Environment, Social & Governance) practices into its core values, to an extent that it is governing every business decision they undertake. The company is determined to provide high-impact sustainable warehousing solutions by incorporating green infrastructure, industry-leading technology and ecosystem-based approaches. For this, Welspun One’s flagship Bhiwandi project was recently awarded as India’s 1st Platinum Pre-certified Green Logistics Park by the esteemed Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), a part of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). Welspun One organized a special s a p l i n g p l a n t a t i o n d r i v e o n Wo r l d Environment Day to commemorate this accomplishment and in parallel encouraged its community to plant trees and contribute towards a greener environment. As a part of this initiative, the company gifted over 500 saplings to its employees, workers at the Bhiwandi Park and various partners & associates; while adhering to the Covid-19 protocols.
To c r e a t e f u r t h e r awareness on reducing carbon footprint, the company also donated saplings to the residents of Bapgaon Naka and Chaudharpada village near the park. On the certification, Anshul Singhal, Managing Director, Welspun One Logistics Parks said, “We are committed to designing a highperforming logistics park in accordance with the IGBC Green Logistics Parks & Warehousing rating system. Our underconstruction park has been awarded this coveted certificate after a rigorous evaluation and approval process, making it a matter of great pride for us all. We appreciate CII - Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for the initiative taken and pledge to continue working towards our common goal of creating a long-term and meaningful impact.” Launched in July 2020 and currently under development, Welspun One’s logistics park at Bhiwandi is being designed as per global standards and Green Building Certification requirements. The project design promotes natural habitat and biodiversity on-site by providing over 12% of green cover, including 2770 trees. The park aims to achieve a 37% reduction in water usage
by installing rainwater harvesting and wastewater treatment systems while using low-flow fixtures. The company is also committed to ensuring that 96% of the construction waste be diverted for reuse or recycling and about 68% of the material used in the project be ecologically sound. Well connected with bus stops, NH 3 & 4, and the Mumbai Airport - the project is slated to aid the reduction in carbon footprint through vehicular traffic. In addition to the park, Welspun One is also working towards eco-friendly measures beyond the fence such as the installation of solar PV systems, street lights, the renovation of public toilets, and other such facilities for the social well-being of occupants in nearby communities and villages. Welspun One has been the first company in its category to register under the pilot programme and receive a precertification of the new rating system “IGBC Green L ogistics Parks and Warehouses.”
Ship orders surge as Carriers rush to add capacity : WSJ NEW YORK: Global shipyards that were retrenching and consolidating in a faltering maritime market barely more than a year ago are now flush with new orders, boosted by efforts by shipping lines to add capacity to meet resurgent consumer demand in Western economies. Orders for new container ships in the first five months of this year were nearly double the orders for all of both 2019 and 2020, according to London-based maritime data provider VesselsValue Ltd., with the biggest gains going to shipyards in South Korea and China. The order tally has been so strong that some yards have stopped giving quotes for new vessels and are trying to renegotiate existing orders for more than 20 ships as the price of steel plates used to build vessels has doubled since the end of 2020, according to people involved in those deals. The resurgence in ordering is being driven mainly by container ships as Western retailers such as Walmart Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. scramble to restock after a year of supply-chain disruptions from the coronavirus pandemic. The r ush to replenish depleted inventories, along with congestion at major ports in North America, Europe and Asia, has left cargo space hard to find and sent freight rates soaring. That has spurred big profit gains at operators like A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S, CMA CGM SA and Hapag-Lloyd AG , as well as triggered moves to renew and expand their fleets. “They are making bucketloads of money and when that happens, owners
invest in new ships,” said Peter Sand, chief shipping analyst at Denmark-based shipping trade body Bimco. “Orders have doubled so far in 2021, nearly reaching the total tonnage ordered for all of last year. I won’t be surprised if there is another wave of ordering.” The strong orders are in contrast with the past couple of years, when a long downtur n in maritime trade lef t a dwindling backlog of orders at shipyards and forced some to consolidate. Data from London-based shipping broker Braemar ACM Shipbroking show that in the first five months of this year, ships totaling capacity for about 2.6 million containers—measured in 20-foot equivalent units, a standard maritime measure—are on order, putting the business on track to surpass an annual record of 2.8 million containers’ worth of capacity ordered in all of 2007. “It’s been our busiest period in years and it’s very much about container ships,” said a senior executive of South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. , the world’s biggest shipbuilding facility in terms of capacity. “The orders are mostly for bigger ships with all the extras to emit less, which is good for margins. We are almost out of slots to build new ships until late 2023.” “I’ve never seen such demand in 20 years,” this executive said. Ship Orders New orders for container ships have revived as shipping-line profits have surged Annual South Korea’s three big y a r d s — H y u n d a i H e a v y, D a e w o o Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co.
and Samsung Heavy Industries Co. —account for more than a third of all shipbuilding orders for all types of vessels. The other shipyards with big shares of global orders are China State Shipbuilding Corp., China Shipbuilding Industry Corp. and Japan’s Imabari Shipbuilding Co. In the first five months of this year, 208 container ships worth $16.3 billion were added to the global order book, compared with 120 ships valued at $8.8 billion for all of last year and 114 vessels worth $6.9 billion in 2019, according to VesselsValue. The South Korean shipyard executive said the boxship orders are mainly for vessels that can move around 14,500 containers and behemoths with a capacity of more than 20,000 boxes that are mainly deployed on Asia-Europe trade lanes. An executive at one of China’s big state shipbuilders said owners of roughly two dozen ships are being asked to pay more if they want their vessels delivered because of rising steel prices. “If the yards adhere to the original contract, they will be delivering the ships at a loss,” said this executive. “A big cargo ship needs around 25,000 to 30,000 tons of steel and that’s an additional $15 million on average from last year in terms of cost. There are at least 22 ships on order that are being renegotiated at big Asian yards.” Steel can account for up to 30% of a vessel’s cost, depending on the type of ship. Tankers and dry-bulk movers need more steel than container ships. A very large crude carrier now costs around $100 million, up from $85 million last October.
