DHL introduces Next-Generation Wireless Logistics, a new Trend Report that explores the future of IoT in logistics •

New Trend Report reveals latest industry trajectory and innovations, introduces a world where everyone, everything, everywhere is connected

•

Recent industry survey by DHL reveals 60% of logistics professionals have inadequate supply chain visibility. 75% plan to implement at least one Next-Generation Wireless technology in the near future as part of their visibility strategy

•

Next-Generation Wireless continues to fuel digital transformation and launches logistics sector into the future of full visibility, wide-scale automation, and predictability

GERMANY: DHL has released “Next- Generation Wireless in Logistics”, a new Trend Report that offers a comprehensive look at the evolution of wireless networks and the future of the Internet of Things (IoT) in logistics. The report summarizes logistics industry perspective and recent numbers, paving the way to a common understanding of different wireless technologies by showcasing examples and envisioning future possibilities for next generation wireless. Connecting Everyone, Everything, Everywhere Even before the current COVID-19 crisis, wireless communication technology was making headlines. Much of the recent interest has focused on 5G mobile data networks that are being rolled out in many countries. 5G promises a host of benefits for end users, businesses, and telecommunications systems operators alike, including higher speeds, greater capacity, and tailored services for a new generation of smart connected devices. Beyond 5G, progress across a wide range of different wireless communication technologies is now creating new opportunities for logistics to improve visibility, enhance operational efficiency, and accelerate automation. Wellknown technologies like WiFi and Bluetooth, and lesserknown technologies like Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellites have been enhanced for industrial use. These next-generation wireless technologies will enable the next step in the communication revolution, moving towards a new world in which everyone and everything can be connected everywhere. Building a fully connected future for logistics In a recent survey of 800 supply chain leaders conducted by DHL, 60% of respondents stated that visibility of their supply chain is currently inadequate. The top three key challenges among the respondents are achieving true endto-end visibility, lack of a single centralized platform to drive IoT initiatives, as well as fragmented data collection from inherently heterogeneous supply chains. The top three priorities identified shaping visibility strategies are end-toend transportation visibility, inventory visibility, and the implementation of supply chain data analytics. 75% of respondents reported they intend to implement at least one next-generation wireless technology in the near future to achieve their visibility goals. “After having transformed asset-light industries, the digital revolution is now rapidly changing more asset-heavy industries, from automotive and manufacturing companies to healthcare providers,” says Markus Kückelhaus, Vice President Innovation & Trend Research, DHL Customer Solutions & Innovation. “Our own sector, logistics, will be both a major beneficiary of the IoT-enabled digital revolution and an enabler of it. Although some parts of the logistics industry are already smart and connected, next generation-wireless is set to usher in the next wave of IoT in logistics.” In a future where everyone and everything is online everywhere, three key things will become possible for the logistics industry:

1. Total Visibility: Every shipment, logistics asset, infrastructure, and facility will be connected thanks to widely available networks and inexpensive highperformance sensors. This will enable highly efficient automation, process improvement, swifter and more transparent incident resolution, and – ultimately – the best service quality for both B2B and B2C customers. 2. Wide-Scale Autonomy: All autonomous vehicles, whether indoor robots or logistics vehicles on public roads, rely on ultra-fast, reliable wireless communication to navigate and traverse their worlds effectively. While these solutions are on the rise today, next-generation wireless will be one key enabler driving their widespread use and moving the world to autonomous supply chains. 3. Perfecting Prediction: With so many things online, the volume, velocity, and variety of data that we collect will triple the big data already being generated today. The continued progress of machine learning systems and artificial intelligence paired with the ultra-low latency of next generation-wireless means that data-driven prediction systems for forecasting, delivery timing and routing may no longer be constrained by latency and performance of wireless networks. While much of the forecast growth will be achieved using technologies that are already familiar to many of us, truly universal connectivity will require approaches that can offer new capabilities, including higher capacity, greater reach, faster speeds, better energy efficiency, and lower costs. “L arge-scale connectivity is an extraordinar y technological and social success story. While IoT is not new in logistics, with 20 billion connected devices already in use globally, this story is still only just beginning. A myriad of technologies are simultaneously advancing at a rapid rate, which are also cost effective and increasingly ubiquitous. They are now becoming more accessible which suddenly opens up vast opportunities for the development of applications and use cases at an unprecedented rate,” explains Matthias Heutger, SVP, Global Head of Innovation & Commercial Development, DHL. “Our Trend Report illustrates each of these next-gen wireless technologies, and outlines and compares them, their limitations as well as practical application. Furthermore, we highlight how the potential associated with these technologies is fast becoming a fundamental part of the supply chain of tomorrow.” Next-generation wireless is a broad portfolio of technologies that promise to deliver against those diverse – and often competing – objectives. DHL’s Trend Report includes a specialized section on how the latest wireless technology works, highlights some innovative projects underway in the industry, and provides implementation guidelines for supply chain organizations. The complete Trend Report “Next-Generation Wireless in Logistics” is available for free download at www.dhl.com/next-gen-wireless-logistics.

Export curbs now only on specific diagnostic kits, instruments: DGFT NEW DELHI: The Government has decided to continue the export curbs only on specific diagnostic kits, reagents, and instruments such as swabs sterile synthetic fibre, silicon columns and magnetic stand, amid the coronavirus outbreak. In a notification, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said all other diagnostic kits/reagents/instruments/apparatus are freely exportable subject to submission of an undertaking by the exporter to the customs authorities at

the time of export. On April 4, DGFT had put restrictions on exports of all diagnostic kits and reagents. The move was aimed at dealing with the COVID-19 crisis as these products are required for testing of patients. Reagents are substances or mixtures that are used in a chemical analysis. Putting a product under the restricted category means that an exporter would require a licence from

DGFT for outbound shipments. Amending the notification dated April 4, it said only specified diagnostic kits/reagents/ instruments/apparatus "are restricted for exports whether as an individual item or as a part of any diagnostic kits/reagent". The other products which are still under restricted category include VTM kits, RNA extraction kits, RT-PCR kits and reagents, 15mn falcon tube, beads, probes (specific for Covid-19 testing), and reverse transcriptase enzymes.

India's engineering exports fell drastically in April; China & Singapore manage positive growth NEW DELHI: Only Singapore and China, out of top 25 destinations of India's engineering exports, could manage a positive year- on- year growth in April, 2020 while the rest conceded massive contraction up to 91 per cent in some cases, due to a hugely disruptive impact of Covid-19, an EEPC India analysis has shown. In a reflection of the scale of trade disruption, a city-nation of Singapore replaced the US as the number one destination for Indian engineering exports. The second position, just one more positive market, was China, the analysis noted. "The US has been our number one market , while the UAE, European Union countries and some our neighbouring SAARC nations were major destinations for us. But then, numbers have been turned on their

head , under the Covid-19 impact. Even as the world economies are trying hard to re-open , it would be long before exports can reach a level of re-assurance," EEPC India Chairman Ravi Sehgal said. He said, the engineering exports , which largely comprise manufacturing , face both internal and external challenges with the small and medium enterprises finding it even more difficult to stay afloat. Raw material shortagesessentially steel, non-availability of work force, unviable fixed costs and disruptions in the logistics are among the major domestic problems. On the other hand, restrictions on movement of people and goods, rising trade barriers and geo -political issues remain challenging areas , he said. As for the monthly data, annualised growth in India’s engineering exports to

Singapore was over 95 per cent during April 2020 to USD 553 million from USD 283 million in April 2019 . On the other hand, engineering shipments to the US,the traditional top Indian market, nosedived by close to 75 per cent to USD 222 million during the month under review from USD 883 million in the comparable month of 2019. The maximum damage of lockdown and restrictions was seen in despatches to Nepal, by as much as 91 per cent , from USD 222 million to mere USD 19 million. A similar picture was visible with regard to Mexico, dropping year on year by 91 per cent from USD 189 million to USD 17 million. However, India’s engineering exports to China registered a positive monthly growth of more than 19 per cent to USD 173 million in April, 2020 from USD 145 million.

Indian economy to grow at 9.5% in next fiscal: Fitch Ratings MUMBAI: After a contraction in the current financial year, India's economy is forecast to bounce back with a sharp growth rate of 9.5 per cent next year provided it avoids further deterioration in financial sector health, Fitch Ratings s a i d r e c e n t l y. T h e c o r o n a v i r u s pandemic will lead to shrinking of the already slowing economy in 2020-21 that started in April. Fitch Ratings forecast a 5 per cent contraction in the GDP in the ongoing financial year. "The pandemic has drastically weakened India's growth outlook and laid bare the challenges caused by a high public-debt burden," Fitch Ratings said in

its APAC Sovereign Credit Overview released recently. "After the global crisis, India's GDP growth is likely to return to higher levels than 'BBB' category peers, provided it avoids further deterioration in financial sector health as a result of the pandemic," it said forecasting a 9.5 per cent real GDP growth next year. India on March 25 instituted the world's largest lockdown to combat the novel coronavirus, halting almost all economic activities. The lockdown has been repeatedly extended, although some restrictions have been eased from May 4 in zones with fewer infections.

"However, new cases have continued to rise," it said. "The government has announced stimulus measures amounting to 10 per cent of GDP, of which the fiscal component of about 1 per cent of GDP is significantly less than many of India's peers," the rating agency said. General government debt already stood at 70 per cent of GDP in 2019-20, well above the 'BBB' rating median of 42 per cent. India's ratio of public debt/GDP is expected to rise to 84 per cent of GDP in 2020-21 - up from a forecast of 71 per cent when Fitch Ratings affirmed the 'BBB-' rating in December 2019.

Adani Group Ports infrastructure project impacted during lockdown period AHMEDABAD: The ongoing projects of the Adani Group at Kamarajar Port and Vizhinjam Port have been impacted by COVID -19 and the lockdown measures announced by the State and Central governments. With the pandemic and the lockdown continuing, their impact, in terms of money, cannot be quantified at this stage. However, project completion time as also net project value will be affected, according to a company official. The entire work at these ports was

stopped during the first lockdown due to various orders by the authorities. Even after the relaxation of lockdown curbs, since May 18, work had been impacted due to restricted working hours, disruption in supply chain and non-availability of manpower. Meanwhile, the group has invoked force majeure clause. Earlier, the Adani Group had set October 2020 as deadline for the completion of its second container terminal project at Ennore. But, due to prevailing conditions and restrictions, project completion might get delayed by 12 to 14 months. And, it would also lead to cost escalation, industry sources said.

As per the plan, the second container terminal will have a quay length of 330 metres and handle 0.6 million 20-foot equivalent units of containers (TEUs) of containers. As on date, Adanis have completed only 20% of the civil works. The initial cost of the terminal was pegged at Rs. 578 crore and this might rise to Rs. 800 crore, said the sources. Adani Ports Special Economic Zone reported a 25% drop in volume for all types of cargo for April and May compared with the year-earlier period and hoped there would be a faster economic recovery by the second quarter of FY20.

Sugar companies pin hopes on New Export Policy to clear stocks PUNE: The sugar industry expects the government to soon announce a new export policy for sugar for 2020-21 (Oct-Sept) as the reduction in domestic consumption along with excess production of sugar, may force India to look at exports to clear sugar stocks. A meeting was held by minister Ram Vilas Paswan of the concer ned departments to review the ongoing situation and discuss the policy measures

for the next sugar season at a time when India is expected to produce 27MT of sugar in the 2019-20 sugar season, while the production in 2020-21 is expected to be about 31 MT. Industry veterans claim that measures like extension of the scheme of buffer stock of 40 lakh tonnes of sugar is also likely to be extended in the next sugar season that starts from October 1. “The meeting discussed the policy of giving incentives for export of 6MT of sugar

in the next season as also the continuation of the scheme of creation of a buffer stock of 4 MT like in the current year. It also discussed the industry’s demands on the introduction of a new soft loan scheme, increasing the minimum selling price (MSP) of sugar and the demand for reduction of interest rate on delayed cane payment to farmers from 15% to 8%,” said an executive of an industry body.

New Autonomous ITVs to boost Operational Efficiency at Jebel Ali Port in deal between DP World, UAE Region and DGWorld DUBAI: Leading trade e n a b l e r, DP World, UAE Region and the autonomous vehicle, robotics and AI specialist DGWorld has entered a contractual agreement to equip Jebel Ali Port with a fleet of Autonomous Internal Terminal Vehicles (AITV´s), including all related integrations in the existing operation processes and infrastructures. DP World, UAE Region once again manifests its leadership and visionary role by introducing autonomous vehicles and related technologies into their daily operations, which supports their initiatives and strategy of introducing digitalization and newest technologies as the new global standard for traditional port operations, supply chains and to enable the future of trade. The contract signed between the two sides states, DGWorld will deliver and integrate their autonomous technology at the existing ITV fleet in multiple phases, with the goal to further increase the overall efficiency of the terminal and reduce the overall size of the currently used fleet, at the same time. Mohammed Al Muallem, CEO and Managing Director, DP World, UAE Region, said: “At DP World, UAE Region, we employ today’s frontline technologies such as robotics, automation, Internet of Things, Big Data, virtual reality and cybersecurity to build and sustain our efficiencies. As a trade enabler, technology has powered and underpinned our capabilities as an essential economic service at a time when the UAE needs us most. Digital technology will continue to drive smart trade for DP World, UAE Region and help us create a better future for all.”

Bilal Al-Zoubi – DGWorld Founder & CEO, added: “We are so proud of the Trust received by DP World as one of leading global Port Operator and smart trade enabler to work under their umbrella to deliver these advanced AI, Robotics & Autonomous Technologies. Following the visionary leadership of DP World and Dubai to be one most advanced & smartest Ports as well as City in the world, we are investing heavily in the best Minds, Practices and Resources to develop those Applications & Technologies to match their operational requirements based on the Highest International Standards and now we are moving stronger to expand our current operations locally and globally with the great support of DP World and Dubai – UAE Government.” Previous trials of this new technology have shown, that it is capable to unlock new potentials for efficient and economical automation of already existing Container Terminals in combination with the intensive utilization of new AI-based software solutions, which have been integrated by the teams of both parties, jointly.
