Indian exports grow 24% to $9.4 bn between June 1-7 NEW DELHI: The Country ’s exports increased 24.18 per cent to $9.39 billion during June 1-7 on account of healthy growth in sectors like engineering, gems and jewellery and petroleum products, an official said. The exports during June 1-7 2021 stood at $ 7.56 billion, the Commerce Ministry official said.

Imports during the first week of this month too rose by about 77 per cent to $16 billion. Gems and jewellery, engineering, petroleum products, and electronic goods’ exports increased by 84.3 per cent, 25.7 per cent, 20.4 per cent and 73.5 per cent, respectively. Major import goods that recorded growth include petroleum, crude,

coal, coke and briquettes, gold and chemicals. India’s merchandise exports rose by 15.46 per cent to $37.29 billion in May on account of healthy performance by sectors, including petroleum products, electronic goods and chemicals. Imports during the month grew by 56.14 per cent to $60.62 billion.

JNPA seeks to revoke 1998 order prohibiting construction of port in ESZ NAVI MUMBAI: The Jawaharlal N e h r u Po r t Au t h o r i t y ( J N PA ) , responsible for administering the Centre’s Wadhavan Port project, has sought to rescind a September 1998 o r d e r o f t h e D a h a n u Ta l u k a Environment Protection Authority ( D T E PA ) , p r o h i b i t i n g t h e construction of a major port within the predominantly tribal Dahanu ecosensitive zone (ESZ). On May 12 this year, the JNPA

submitted an application to this effect before the newly-reconstituted DTEPA. In addition to modification of the 1998 order, the JNPA has separately sought the Authority’s no-objection certificate for the port project, which is one of the compliances mandated by the MoEFCC. A third application has also been made, asking that the MoEFCC be made a party to the matter before the DTEPA, which is

expected to rule on the JNPA’s application on June 23. Sources at JNPA said, “The port is of immense strategic importance to India’s logistics sector. Our port at Nhava is getting saturated. In order to compete with other countries that have heavily invested in ports, including China, Korea, UAE and Singapore, we need to e x p a n d . We a r e a w a i t i n g t h e DTEPA’s decision.”

French delegation led by Paul Hermelin calls on MoS Commerce; deliberates on Bilateral and International Trade NEW DELHI: A four member French delegation led by the Special Representative for Bilateral E c o n o m i c R e l a t i o n s , M r. Pa u l Hermelin called on the Union Minister of State for Commerce & Industry, Shri Som Prakash here today. They discussed the scope for mutual cooperation across the entire gamut of bilateral and international trade and economic issues. Shri Som Prakash gave an overview of major initiatives and reforms of the Modi Government in reducing cost of business and increasing Ease of Doing Business in India. He also explained about the success of India-France Fast Track Mechanism. Shri Som Prakash highlighted India’s priorities ahead of the impending 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) of the WTO due to be held in Geneva next week. The Minister sought support of Government of France for India’s proposal seeking TRIPS waiver in

view of the global fight against the Covid pandemic. He also pointed out India’s stance on WTO negotiations related to e-Commerce and the moratorium on Customs duties on electronic transmissions that is due to expire in the run up to the Mc12. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Hermelin said France is keen to pursue the Free Trade Agreement ( F TA ) n e g o t i a t i o n s b e t w e e n European Union and India. Both

sides hoped to conclude the agreement before 2024. The pact will pave the way for India to give a boost to trade with the 27-member nation EU bloc, subject to ratification by both sides including the European Parliament. The two sides are due to reopen FTA talks in Brussels on the 17th June. The French delegation included the Ambassador of France to India, Mr. Emmanuel Lenain.

E-way bills in May down 2% from April NEW DELHI: E-way bills generated by businesses for interstate commerce in May were marginally down from April, but significantly higher than the year-ago month, suggesting that June GST collections will likely be around Rs 1.35 trillion, sources said. E-way bills stood at 73.62 million in

May 2022, the third highest since the system was rolled out in 2018 and up 84% on year, partly because of a very low base. However, on a month-onmonth basis, e-way bills in May were 2% lower than the previous month. Collections had hit an all-time high of Rs 1.68 trillion in April (March transactions), broadly reflecting

efficient plugging of tax evasion, a sustained shift of business to the formal sector of the economy and year-end bunching of tax payments by firms. Monthly gross GST collections moderated to Rs 1.41 trillion in May, reflecting a 4% decline in e-way bills in April.

Cabinet approves MoU between India and UAE on bilateral cooperation NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, recently has approved the proposal for signing a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Cooperation in the field of Industries and Advanced Technologies. Growing India-UAE economic and commercial relations contribute to the stability and strength of a rapid diversifying and deepening bilateral relationship between the two countries. India-UAE bilateral trade, valued at US$ 180 million (Rs.1373 crore) per annum in the 1970s has increased to US$ 60 billion (Rs.4.57 lakh crore) making the UAE, India's third largest trading partner for the year 2019-20 after China and the US. Moreover, the UAE is the second largest export destination of India (after US) with an export value of US$ 29 billion (Rs.2.21 lakh crore) for the year 2019-2020. The UAE is eighth

largest investor in India with an estimated investment of US$ 18 billion (Rs.1.37 lakh crore). Indian i n v e s t m e n t s i n t h e UA E a r e estimated at around US$ 85 billion (Rs.6.48 lakh crore). India and the UAE have signed a bilateral "Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement" (CEPA) on 18/02/2022. This agreement has potential to increase trade between India and the UAE from US$ 60 billion (Rs.4.57 lakh crore) to US$ 100 billion (Rs.7.63 lakh crore) in the next five years. The MoU envisages cooperation on a mutually beneficial basis in the following areas: a. Strengthening the Supply Chain Resilience of Industries b. Renewable & Energy Efficiency c. Health and life sciences d. Space Systems e. Artificial Intelligence f. Industry 4.0 Enabling Technologies

g. Standardization, metrology, conformity assessment, accreditation, and Halal certification. The MoU aims at strengthening and developing industries in both nations through investments, technology transfer and the deployment of key technologies in industries. This is likely to generate employment across the economy. The implementation of MoU may lead to increase in research and innovation in all areas of mutual cooperation, particularly in the areas of Renewable Energy, Artificial Intelligence, Industry Enabling technologies and Health and Life science. This may lead to growth of these sectors, increased domestic production, enhanced exports and reduction in imports. Signing of the MoU will result in fulfilling the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat, a clarion call given by Hon'ble Prime Minister of India in making India a self-reliant nation.

New Mangalore Port extends 25% charge concession for Boxships MANGALORE: Aiming to attain further container traffic growth, India’s South-Wester n regional gateway, the New Mangalore Port has extended various facilities for one more year for both the mainline and feeder boxship operators. Effective from Januar y, the mainline container vessels will enjoy a 25% rebate on port dues, birth hire, and pilotage charges till 31 December 2022. At the same time, the port authority also extended a 25% concession on birth hire charges and port dues for feeder container vessels

for a similar period. “In order to promote and attract feeder and mainline vessels to facilitate the growth of container traffic and to be competitive with the neighbouring ports, the board of trustees of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has accorded approval to extend the following concession for a further period of one year,” said the port authority. Earlier in the first week of November, the port authority also extended a 50% discount facility for one year for export shipment of steel

cargo through the port. The New Mangalore Port is the only major gateway of the Indian state of Karnataka through which products like petroleum, iron ore pellets, and various containerised cargoes are exported and cement, coal, fertiliser, edible oil, liquid chemicals, and some other containerised cargoes are imported. During April-November 2021, the port handled 101,277 TEU, increased by 6,500 TEU from the same period in 2020. The port annually handles around 40 million tonnes of cargoes.

Iranian Foreign Minister in India to deepen bilateral ties and cooperation NEW DELHI: Foreign Minister of Iran, Dr Hossein Amir-Abdollahian arrived in New Delhi recently to deepen ties and business relations between the two countries. “The visit will further boost our deep historical ties and partnership,” said the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi. Iran Foreign Ministry said Hossein held talks with India’s high-ranking officials aimed at expanding strategic cooperation between the two countries. “The visit to India is aimed at expanding ties between the two countries and holding strategic consultations over cooperation regarding regional issues and international developments,” Iran Foreign Ministry said in a statement. India’s relations with Iran are unique and historic. Iran is an important partner and a close neighbour. During 2021-22, there was an

intensification in bilateral engagement. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar visited Tehran twice and held constructive meetings with the Iranian leadership. The two countries continued their engagement in the field of healthcare, and a meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG) on Health was held in April 2021. Jaishankar visited Iran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Presidentelect Ayatollah Sayyid Ebrahim Raisi. He visited Tehran at the invitation of the Government of Iran. He held constructive meetings with the top Iranian leadership and discussed several issues, including the development of Shahid Behesti Terminal, and Chabahar Port. The Government of India took over the operations of a part of Shahid

Beheshti Port, Chabahar in Iran. India started interacting with Iran on Chabahar Port around 2003 but a major push was received in the second half of 2014, resulting in the signing of an MOU between the two countries for the development of Chabahar Port in May 2015. This MOU translated into a formal 10-year Contract for Equipping and Operating the Chabahar Port, which was executed on 23rd May 2016, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tehran.

Global Trade slips in May as Container Shipping congestion reaches North Sea : Kiel Trade Indicator SINGAPORE: Global trade dipped 1 per cent in May from the previous month as container shipping congestion and delays stretched to European ports in the North Sea, according to Kiel Trade Indicator data. For the first time since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, container ships are now also jammed in the North Sea off the ports of Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy said in its monthly r e p o r t . C u r r e n t l y, j u s t u n d e r 2 per cent of global cargo capacity is stuck in the area and can neither be loaded nor unloaded. “Overall, May trade is rather restrained and continues the sideways movement of recent months. However, international trade is again suffering more from the congestion and delays in container shipping, which have now also reached the North Sea,” Vincent S t a m e r, H e a d o f K i e l Tr a d e Indicator, said. The pandemic highlighted significant challenges in the logistics sector, with many cargo customers

struggling to find shipping containers amid labour disruption in the industry. The acute supply chain bottlenecks have led to congestion and delays at ports, a shortage in containers and a sharp rise in the cost of shipping goods. The Russia-Ukraine conflict and recent pandemic-related lockdowns in China appear to be further dampening global goods trade in the first half of 2022, according to the World Trade Organisation’s latest Goods Trade Barometer in May. The current reading of 99 remains slightly below the baseline value of 100 for the index, which is a forwardlooking composite of real-time indicators, suggesting continued slow growth in merchandise trade. The organisation has also revised down its forecast for global trade growth this year to 3 per cent from 4.7 per cent earlier, due to the RussiaUkraine war. Global trade growth in 2023 is expected at 3.4 per cent. Shipping congestion near Shanghai and the neighbouring Zheijang province currently ties up more than 3 per cent of global cargo, the Kiel Trade Indicator data showed.

More ships were able to depart from Shanghai after some of the Covid-19 restrictions were lifted, and in the second half of May, departures were at a comparable level to China’s other ports. At present, however, they are again about 15 per cent lower, the data found. To date, exports worth up to 700 million euros ($746m) from China to Germany have been lost due to the lockdown in Shanghai. “However, the fact that Shanghai exports have risen again in recent weeks despite lockdown measures also shows that companies there are on the starting blocks and will probably be able to ramp up production again quickly if the lockdown ends,” Mr Stamer said. Overall, more than 11 per cent of all goods shipped worldwide are currently stuck in traffic jams, the data showed. In the Red Sea — the most important maritime trade route between Asia and Europe — the gap between expected and actually shipped cargo volumes has grown to around 16 per cent, having almost closed in February, the report said.

India's Sugar exports at record 8.6 mn tonne till May this year: ISMA NEW DELHI: Sugar exports from India, the world's largest producer and second biggest exporter of the sweetener, touched a record 8.6 million tonne till May of the ongoing 2021-22 marketing year ending September, said the latest data released by industry body ISMA on Wednesday. The country had exported total 7 million tonne of sugar in the 2020-21 marketing year, while domestic production stood at 31.19 million tonne in the same period. Last month, the Government capped sugar exports at 10 million tonne to ensure enough domestic supply and check retail prices during festival season in October-November. However, cooperatives have demanded raising

the export cap by 1 million tonne. According to Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), it is reported that around 9.4-9.5 million tonne of export contracts have already been entered into so far. Out of that, about 8.6 million tonne is reported to have been physically exported till end of May 2022. About 16 million tonne of sugar is estimated to have been sold in the domestic market during the OctoberApril period of the current marketing year, higher by 7,50,000 tonne from 15.26 million tonne in the year-ago period. Further, domestic sugar sales quota released by the government up to June is higher by 5,50,000 tonne as

against corresponding period last year. Considering this, ISMA estimates domestic sugar consumption in the cur rent marketing year to be at 27.5 million tonne, as against 26.55 million tonne in the previous year. According to ISMA, domestic sugar production has reached 35.23 million tonne till June 6 of the ongoing marketing year, as against 30.74 million tonne in the year-ago period. "Since special season is in progress in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and cane availability in these states is good for the remaining period up to end of current season, another about 6,00,000 tonne of sugar is expected to be produced collectively by these states," ISMA said.

Global GDP growth likely to slow sharply this year, to around 3% : OECD PARIS: Prior to the war, the world economy was on track for a strong, albeit uneven, recovery from COVID-19. The conflict in Ukraine and the supplychain disruptions exacerbated by shutdowns in China due to the zeroCOVID policy are dealing a serious blow to the recovery. Global GDP growth is now projected to slow sharply this year, to around 3%, and remain at a similar pace in 2023. This is well below the pace of recovery projected last December. Growth is set to be markedly weaker than expected in almost all economies. Many of the hardest-hit countries are in Europe, which is highly exposed to the

war through energy imports and refugee flows. Countries worldwide are being hit by higher commodity prices, which add to inflationary pressures and curb real incomes and spending, further dampening the recovery. This growth slowdown is a price of war which will be paid through lower incomes and fewer job opportunities. Inationary pressures have intensied The war in Ukraine has quashed hopes for a quick end to rising inflation from COVID -19 related supply bottlenecks seen across the global economy during 2021 and early 2022. High food and energy prices and the

continued worsening of supply-chain problems imply that consumer price inflation will peak later and at higher levels than previously foreseen. The new OECD projections show the large and global impact the war is having on inflation, which has already reached 40-year highs in Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. A gradual reduction of supply chain and commodity price pressures and the impact of rising interest rates should begin to be felt through 2023, but core inflation is nonetheless projected to remain at or above central bank objectives in many major economies at year-end.

MSC becomes First Carrier to offer in-house Liquid Cargo Solutions Cont’d. from Pg. 2 With unrivalled global connectivity across land and sea and an extensive port and depot network close to liquid cargo production regions, MSC’s Liquid Cargo Solutions offer flexible capacity and specifications, supporting the growth of the liquid cargo industry. MSC experts fit carefully selected flexibags at its depots prior to cargo pick-up, which removes the requirement for haulage to third-party fitting locations, reducing road miles, saving time and money and helping customers to meet their sustainability needs. MSC Liquid Cargo Solutions are already available at depot facilities in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. Your Experts in Flexibag Supply and Fit MSC works with dedicated suppliers of high-quality flexibags, and with its customers, to ensure each flexibag is tailored, selecting the right size and specifications according to the cargo’s needs. Flexibags allow customers to fill dry containers with up to 24,000 litres of non-hazardous liquid cargo – such as edible oils, wine, petroleum products and chemicals – offering a safe and cost-effective alternative to other liquid bulk transportation methods, with less packaging than conventional ISO tanks. Carmelo Cassarino, Global Accounts Manager, Logistics for MSC commented: “MSC is in continuous evolution to support its customers’ needs and our endto-end Liquid Cargo Solutions are designed to simplify

and streamline the supply chain for our liquid customers. MSC's in-house fit & supply expertise, combined with our unrivalled customer care and our worldwide connections, guarantee a smooth experience from start to finish – a 360o service that our customers can depend on. This solution is currently available in 21 countries across the world, and we are already looking at the potential for expansion to MSC depots worldwide.” Making Transporting Liquids Flexible, Sustainable and Easy Whilst liquid cargo is traditionally transported in ISO tanks, there are many advantages to making the switch to flexibags, including the fact that flexibags are singleuse and fully recyclable, making them the hygienic choice for shipping edible cargoes. In addition, thanks to MSC’s bulkhead recycling scheme, bulkheads used for liquid cargo transport can be reused efficiently, reducing waste and improving supply chain sustainability. Flexibags can be installed into any 20’ container which, once the bag is removed, is ready for re-use, removing the need for repositioning and saving cost. In addition, there is no need to clean the container after use, as with ISO tanks. MSC agencies currently offering Liquid Cargo Solutions include: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Turkey, UK and Uruguay with more to follow in 2022.

FIATA: What the Future International Trade Alliance means for Freight Forwarders A M S T E R D A M : T h e Fu t u r e International Trade (FIT) Alliance was formed recently by DCSA, FIATA, BIMCO, t h e I C C a n d S W I F T, w i t h t h e s e organisations signing a memorandum of understanding to standardise the digitalisation of international trade. Representatives of the FIT Alliance spoke to these Global Associations to discover what its aims mean to them and their members. Thomas Bagge, DCSA CEO, recently shared his thoughts on The Future International Trade Alliance, as did Grant Hunter, Director for Standards, Innovation and Research at BIMCO. Here, we discover the view from freight forwarders with Stéphane Graber, Director General of FIATA. We began by asking Stéphane: Why did FIATA join the FIT Alliance? Stéphane Graber (SG): At FIATA, we are fully convinced of the importance and benefits of digitalisation and what this can mean for freight forwarders, which is optimised processes and more reliable services for them and their customers. Clearly, collaboration is key, what does that mean to freight forwarders and FIATA? SG: It is important to us that freight forwarders play a driving role in how their activities are digitalised and, to this end, we developed the FIATA Bill of Lading (eFBL) data standard, aligned with the UN/CEFACT reference data model, to facilitate systems interoperability for all parties. This was a first step towards a fully digital bill of lading (B/L), but exchanges between different platforms require a collective resolution, partly because of the legal framework. Through the FIT Alliance we aim to work together, as key organisations within the supply chain, to overcome the technical electronic bill of lading (eBL) interoperability challenges. Together, the organisations aim to promote and support common legislative conditions across international

jurisdictions and platforms, so that digitalisation is accelerated and paperless trade becomes the way we all do business in the future. What top three benets do you see your members gaining from the Alliance? SG: Firstly, interoperability of standards. Through the FIT Alliance we will ensure that FIATA’s digital standards, including those for the eFBL, are interoperable with standards developed by other organisations so that we can all exchange information fluently. FIATA sees great importance in leading the discussion on data ownership and interoperability. Secondly, technical interoperability to enable the transfer of eBLs from one platform to another. Finally, the legal acceptance of digital documents. This is probably one of the biggest challenges ahead of us. Through the work of the Alliance, we should encourage countries around the world to adopt harmonised legislation that will enable the legal recognition of electronic transferable records in more regions. We can bring about all kinds of technical solutions but without that, it will not happen. What does the Alliance mean more widely, for international shipping and trade? SG: Quite simply, it’s the dream! And all logistics industry players share the same dream – the seamless transfer of eBLs between all those involved in shipments – shippers, buyers, carriers, freight forwarders, banks, authorities, warehouses, insurers – we are all looking for that because it will help save time and money for everyone. The FIT Alliance shows a joint commitment to facilitating this through a collaborative approach. We need to work together to realise the dream, respecting, considering and protecting the different stakeholders with their specific needs and requirements, because we all play different roles in the supply chain.
