Major Ports bettered efficiency and earnings in 2023-24

NEW DELHI: Indian ports have registered an improvement in key parameters and are now clocking at global best levels, according to Senior Officials. According to data compiled by the Ministry for Ports, Shipping, and Water ways, average container turnaround time (TRT) for eight Major Ports improved to 22.57 hours during 2023-24, from 23 44 hours in fiscal 2022-23. These eight handle 65% of all c a r g o m o v i n g o n t h e c e n t r a l government administered ports of the country

According to the centre, average container turnaround time reached less than a day in 2023-24 which is better than USA (1.5 days), Australia (1 7 days), Singapore (1 0 days) The improvement is on the back of investments in cargo handling

equipment on berths and better supply chain visibility due to digitalization, officials said.

The most improvement has been registered at the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) where container TRT is 18.65 hours in the year under review, down from 26.50 hours in the fiscal 2022-23. With a container turnaround time of 18.48 hours, the V. O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) is India’s most efficient port under this parameter for the year.

Besides faster operations, these ports were also successful in handling 532 6 million tonnes (MT) cargo during 2023-24, which is 6% more than the preceding fiscal At 145 38 MT, the Paradip Port Authority (PPA) handled the most cargo from among all Major portsduring2023-24 ThisportinOdisha

also reported the highest increase in cargo handled by volume, improving by 10 02 MT over 2022-23 levels I m p r o v e d o p e r a t i o n a l performance reflected in earnings of ports as well. PPA reported a 21% higher net surplus over 2022-23 levels at Rs 1570 crore by the end of the fiscal 2023-24. Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) came second with a turnaround time of 22.22 hours and 85 82 MT cargo handling raked in Rs 1263.94 crore as net surplus.

The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) was the only Major port to record a decline in cargo handling which fell by 5.19 MT to 132.37 MT in fiscal 2023-24 Despite the overall lower cargo movement, this Gujarat port recorded a 2 04% higher net surplus at Rs 1096.6 crore.

Facing delays, exporters seek priority shipment for MSMEs

NOIDA: Indian exporters have sought priority shipment facilities for local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) as transhipment of Bangladesh’s export cargo to third countries through the Delhi Air Cargo complex is causing delays, inflating freight expenses.

The Noida Apparel Export Cluster (NAEC), where 80% of the apparel production and export units are MSMEs, has sought a 25% quota for such units in the cargo with priority in shipment. Air freight has quadrupled in the past two months, say exporters.

Last year in February, India allowed the Delhi Airport to act as a cargo transhipment hub between Bangladesh and other export destinations, thereby expanding the existing transhipment policy through

the Kolkata Air cargo complex

“The cargo slots at Delhi Airport are

cost of Indian exporters,” said Lalit Thukral, President NAEC. After the Red Sea crisis, a lot of traffic h

. Items such as leather goods, which were conventionally not shipped by air, are now being transported via flights, pushing up air freight.

The cargo that cost Rs. 35 per kg to be shipped to Europe via air three months ago, is now being shipped at Rs. 140 per kg.

“India has given transit facility to Bangladesh export cargo from Delhi A i r p o r t b e s i d e s K o l k a t a Simultaneously, air freight has also

increased because of the geopolitical situation including Red Sea crisis

We have taken this up with commerce department as it has led to delay in export cargo particularly of MSMEs due to space constraints , on some of the busy routes, in regular flights,” said Ajay Sahai, Director General, the Fe d e r a t i o n o f I n d i a n E x p o r t Organisations. The Apparel Export Promotion Council has sought suspension of the transshipment facility to Bangladesh. “Textile exporters in Bangladesh already receive several benefits such as subsidies from the government and have preferential treatment under the free trade agreements The transhipment policy has further compounded the situation for Indian exporters,” added Thukral.

Decision on resumption of sugar exports months away : Food Secretary

NEW DELHI: Government is not ready to decide whether or not to allow sugar exports this year, and will need several months to assess the issue, a governmentofficialsaidrecently.

India, the world’s second-largest s u g a r p r o d u c e r a f t e r B r a z i l , has banned sugar exports since June 2022 to guarantee to cover local consumption, as well as diverting

sucrose to ethanol production.

“It is still early days,” Sanjeev Chopra, India’s Secretary of Food and Public Distribution, told reporters on the sidelines of the Citi ISO Datagro Sugar Conference in New York

He said sugar exports were unlikely to resume before the government had guarantees that there would be enough sugar to

satisfy local demand plus stocks for at least two and a half months, and sufficient sucrose to divert to the ethanol program.

Chopra said the government saw ethanol production as a clear priority over resuming sugar exports.

India’s sugar industry body ISMA recently asked the Government to allow exports of 2 million metric tons.

India FY24 GDP growth likely hit 8%, to grow 7% in FY25: CEA Nageswaran

N E W D E L H I : V A n a n t h a Nageswaran, the Chief Economic Adviser said on Wednesday that there was a high possibility of GDP growth touching 8 per cent in FY24 on the back of robust growth registered during the three quarters of the financial year ended March 2024.

India’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew 8.4 per cent in the third quarter ended December 2023. In the second quarter, the GDP growth was 7.6 per cent while 7.8 per cent in the first quarter

“The IMF has projected a growth

rate of 7.8 per cent for FY24. But if you look at the trajectory of growth in the first three quarters, obviously, the possibility that the growth rate touches 8 per cent is quite high,” he said at an event organised by NCAER.

This is higher than RBI’s estimate of 7.5 per cent growth for the Indian economy in 2023-24.

For the ongoing financial year, he said, the International Monetary Fund has an estimate of 6.8 per cent but the Reserve Bank of India expects a 7 per cent GDP growth for FY25.

“If that materialises, of course,

it will be the fourth consecutive year after COVID starting from FY22 that the economy will have grown at 7 per cent or more. The RBI forecasts of 7 per cent for FY25 turns out to be either correct or even underestimate, t h

h consecutive year of 7 or higher growth rate,” he said.

However, he said, a lot would depend on how the monsoon shapes up Although the expectations are that there will be an above-normal monsoon, spatial and temporal distribution will matter

India’s exports of medical consumables, disposables surged by 60% in 2022-23

NEW DELHI: India’s exports of m e d i c a l c o n s u m a b l e s a n d disposables have surged by about 60 per cent to USD 1 6 billion in t h

o m USD 1.08 billion in 2019-20, according to data shared at the Meditech Stackathon 2024 held on May 7 here.

T h e d a t a a l s o i n d i c a t e s a reduction in imports of medical consumables and durables to USD 1 09 billion in 2022-23 from USD 1 47 billion in 2020-21

Organized by the Department of Phar maceuticals, Ministr y of Chemicals and Fertilisers, in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the event

aims to decrease import dependence from the current 75 per cent to 50 per cent within the next five years.

Despite these positive trends, India still has a significant distance to cover in achieving self-reliance (Aatma Nirbhar)inthemedicalindustry.

“The sector has witnessed a surge in imports, driven primarily by countries like the US, China, and Germany, however, India’s robust p o l i c y e c o s y s t e m p r e s e n t s opportunities for export boosts and reducing import dependence through domestic manufacturing” said Dr Arunish Chawla Secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.

The key insights shared during the event included a mission statement for the MedTech sector, aiming for self-reliance, redu

dependence, and enhanced export competitiveness through valueadded manufacturing.

India currently ranks as the 4th largest market for medical devices in Asia and among the top 20 globally. However, with a net import of USD 4.1 billion for 2022-23 and an import coverage ratio of 0.45, there is a pressing need to enhance export competitiveness and reduce import dependence. The only sector where India’s exports exceed imports is consumables and disposables.

Improved vessel delays may release more capacity : Sea-Intelligence

COPENHAGEN: When vessel delays occur, a percentage of the global vessel capacity is effectively absorbed and hence unavailable to the market Historically, this percentage has tended to be within 1%-3%, with a few spikes in the 3%-5% range, on account of major disruptive events. When the pandemic hit, this figure nearly touched 14% at its peak. In March 2024, the fleet absorption from vessel delays was 5.7% of the global fleet. This was an improvement from the recent peak in January 2024 of 7 5% Putting it in context, the Red Sea crisis is almost a non-event, compared to the pandemic disruptions. It is important to note that this measures just the capacity absorbed from vessel delays and comes in addition to the capacity being absorbed by the longer route going around Africa.

That said, there is always some “normal” background level of vessel delays, which absorbs part of the global capacity. To better gauge the fleet capacity impact of specific events like the pandemic or the Red Sea crisis, this background level should be removed from the calculation When we do this, we get the result shown in Figure 1. Here we can see how the impact of various types of delays in 2011-2019 had almost no real impact on the capacity availability in the market as a whole

We can also clearly see the pandemic impact peaking in January 2022, where 13.8% of global capacity was rendered unavailable. Here in early 2024, we did indeed have a small spike again, but it is rapidly being removed. If the round-Africa services begin to operate at reliability levels

matching the pre-pandemic era, then this absorbed capacity will be returned to the market, and we could see up to 4% additional capacity fed into the market in 2024. This would then come on top of the 9% of new vessel deliveries in 2024, further worsening the overcapacity challenge for the shipping lines.

Container Ship deliveries hit new YTD record of 1mn TEU : BIMCO

LONDON: “In 2023, 2 3 million TEU of container ship capacity was delivered, beating the former all-time high by 37% Year-to-date another record has been set as more than 1 million TEU has already been delivered during the first four months of the year, an increase of nearly 80% c o m p a r e d t o t h e p r e v i o u s record,” says Niels Rasmussen, Chief Shipping Analyst at BIMCO.

As ship recycling has so far only retired 19 smaller ships, the fleet has expanded by nearly 1 million TEU, a 3.5% increase compared to the beginning of the year This adds to last year’s fleet growth of 8.2%.

“Due to record deliveries the order book has declined. However, a s 1 8 m i l l i o n T E U h a s b e e n contracted during 2023 and 2024, it has only declined by 1 million TEU and now stands at 6.1 million TEU, 21% of the current fleet size. As a result, the order book’s share of the fleet is more than twice the size than it was before the COVID pandemic and liner operators’ contracting spree

began,” says Rasmussen.

The order book contains 2 million TEU for delivery in 2024 and delivery volumes for the year is on target to exceed 3 million TEU, 30% higher than last year’s record In 2025, deliveries should end just below 2 million TEU, the third highest deliveries in one year only exceeded in 2023 and 2024.

Despite this, deliveries are still some way off the record when seen in relation to the size of the fleet. In 2024, we expect deliveries to reach 11% of fleet capacity at the beginning of the year That was most recently beaten in 2008 when deliveries made up 14% of the fleet.

The record high ship deliveries were expected to create significant oversupply in the market, and while this did impact the market in 2023, it appears that deliveries this year instead contribute to keeping global container trade moving.

Due to the rerouting of ships via the Cape of Good Hope following attacks in the Red Sea by Houthis,

about 10% more capacity is needed to manage global container trades Capacity needed to manage any market growth should be added to those 10%.

“When ships start increasing sailings via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, we will most likely see significant oversupply Between 2019 and 2023, the fleet grew 21% while container volumes only grew 4% Between 2023 and 2025, the fleet is expected to grow another 15%,” says Rasmussen.

GE Shipping takes delivery of 2013 built Medium Range product tanker “Jag Prachi”

MUMBAI: Great Eastern Shipping Company has taken the delivery of a 2013 built Medium Range product tanker Jag Prachi of about 51,486 dwt

The company had contracted to buy thevesselinQ4FY24

Company’s current fleet stands at

44 vessels, comprising 30 tankers (6 crude carriers, 20 product tankers, 4 LPG carriers) and 14 dry bulk carriers aggregating 3.46 mn dwt.

Colombo Plan seeking greater collaboration in maritime and logistics sector

COLOMBO: The Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lank a Santosh Jha met with Dr. Benjamin P. Reye, Secretary General of C o l o m b o P l a n a n d R o h a n Masakorala – Lead Consultant of the Port of Colombo Capacity Building Project, recently to discuss the priorities of the Colombo Plan and

collaboration.

India plays a vital role in the development of the maritime and logistics sector in South Asia is

These developments in India will propel the rest of South Asian

economies with a multiplier effect on economic output and connectivity in South Asia. The Colombo Plan, being one of the oldest inter-governmental organisations, is now focusing on the important areas of the maritime and logistics sector to support its member countries to adopt the best practices and increase skills in the sector

India becomes 1st country to receive over $100 Billion in remittances : UN

NEW YORK: India received over USD 111 billion in remittances in 2022, the largest in the world, becoming the first country to reach and even surpass the USD 100 billion mark, the United Nations migration agency has said.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), in its World Migration Report 2024 launched recently, said that i n 2 0 2 2 , I n d i a , M e x i c o , C h i n a , the Philippines and France were the top five remittance recipient countries.

“India was well above the rest,

receiving more than USD 111 billion, the first country to reach and even surpass the USD 100 billion mark. Mexico was the second-largest remittance recipient in 2022, a position it also held in 2021 after overtaking China, which historically had been the second-biggest recipient after India,” the report said

According to the report’s data, India was the top country receiving remittances in 2010 (USD 53.48 billion), 2015 (USS 68.91 billion), and 2020 (USD 83.15 billion), with the remittances

crossing the USD 100 billion mark to reach USD 111.22 billion in 2022.

It noted that with a very large number of migrant workers from the subregion, Southern Asia receives s o m e o f t h e l a r g e s t i n f l o w s o f remittances globally

“With India estimated to have received more than USD 111 billion in 2022, it is by far the largest recipient of international remittances in the world and the first country to ever reach that figure,” the report said.

Port of Salalah introduces viable alternative to Red Sea route

THE HAGUE: With first quarter results, the c o n s e n s

a m o n g shipping lines is an expectation that the R e d S e a b l o c k a

e , the Port of Salalah, located in the Sultanate of Oman, has launched multi-modal service options that provides a viable alternative to the time consuming and more costly re-routing around the Cape of Good Hope.

With an annual capacity of 5 million TEU and expansion currently in progress to add an additional 30% capacity, the Port of Salalah is ideally located on the main ocean routes connecting South and East Asia with Europe, North Africa and the Americas, and the upper Gulf with East Africa. No detour from East-West shipping routes

Unlike other popular transshipment ports in the region, no detour from the main East-West shipping routes into the Gulf of Oman is required, saving a 4-5 day detour from main east-west shipping routes.

The new multimodal solutions launched by the Port of Salalah offers Beneficial Cargo Owners (BCOs) and Shipping Lines cost-effective and fast alternatives between Asia the United States East Coast and European destinations.

Sea/Overland route offers comparable journey times

From the Port of Salalah, an in transit overland route by truck connects to Jeddah located in the safer mid-point of the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia. The overland route takes approximately 4-5 days. From this point the journey can continue by container vessel through the Suez Canal to Europe or the US East Coast reducing the overall transit time under to current routing.

Sea/Air Option for time sensitive cargo

A further sea-air option provides a faster alternative for more time sensitive cargo into and out of Europe. Upon discharge in the Port of Salalah, cargo is transferred in transit to either Salalah or Muscat Airports or even Jebel Ali depending on availability of airlift capacity and connections. Salalah Airport offers state- of-the-art airfreight infrastructure, the ability to handle both narrow-and widebody aircraft, and sufficient spare handling capacity

This option reduces the lead time compared to a full ocean leg and reduces cost compared to a full air freight option. The new multi-modal service reduces transit times by an estimated 20-40% compared to traditional east-west trade routes and could deliver a cost saving of 10-20%

compared to a pure air-freight solution

availability of storage and modern Container F r e i g h t Fa c i l i t i e s , the Port of Salalah can also be used to build in flexibility to supply chains and customer designed intermodal solutions.

These options have already been tested The Port recently teamed up with Maersk, Oman Airports and Transom to introduce a number of sea-air solutions via the Port of Salalah with steady movements which are currently gaining momentum.

A further option is to continue the sea journey through the Red sea through our trusted partners. Competitive pricing

Consistently ranked as the second most efficient terminal in the World in the Container Ports Performance Index (CPPI) published by the World Bank and S&P Global, Port of Salalah offers fast discharging and industry leading truck turn times.

“These high levels of efficiency means that the Port offers extremely high efficiency and cost competitiveness in comparison to other more highly marketed Port choices in the region,” says Sunil Joseph, Commercial Ofcer at Salah Port. “As we’re one of the busiest transhipment hubs in the region, our shipping line customers are not always aware that we have spare capacity to cater for all shipping lines – with clear market opportunities.”

Continual reforms aimed at enhancing the business environment in Oman are driving the development of faster intermodal solutions. “These reforms have matured to a stage where we proudly present Salalah as an unparalleled business opportunity,” says Joseph.

“Beyond merely a port, Salalah offers speed, an array of value-added services, flexibility, and streamlined business operations," he concludes.

"We excel in collaborating with BCOs, ensuring consistency and predictability in their supply chains, to providing multi-modal product offerings that unlock tomorrow’s potential today. We also facilitate seamless transshipments for shipping lines, thereby enhancing market access and navigating the disruptions caused by geopolitical or other developments beyond their control.”
