LONDON: At the end of 2024, the container ship order book was 8.3m TEUs, a new record compared with the previous high of 7.8m TEUs in early 2023,” says Niels Rasmussen, Chief Shipping Analyst at BIMCO.
As 4 4m TEUs were contracted during 2024, the second highest ever, t h e o r d e r b o o k g r e w d e s p i t e deliveries hitting a new record high of 2.9m TEUs.
“Making up 92% of the order book capacity, ships 8k TEUs or larger dominate the order book. The largest segment, 12-17k TEUs, makes up 46% of the order book capacity,” says Rasmussen.
S h i p y a r d s i n C h i n a h a v e benefitted the most from the last four y e a r s ’ c o n t r a c t i n g b o o m a n d currently hold 72% of the order book’s 8.3m TEUs while South Korean and Japanese shipyards hold 22% and 5% respectively
Liner operators control 79% of the
order book capacity, significantly higher than the 61% they control of the fleet capacity. Having already increased from 56% at the beginning of 2019, liner operators’ share of fleet capacity is therefore set to continue growing in the coming years.
Though five ships have already been contracted for delivery in 2030, 99% of the order book will be delivered during 2025-2029 According to the current delivery schedule, 0.7m TEUs will be delivered in 2029 while an average of 1 9m TEUs will be delivered during 2025-2028, peaking at 2.2m TEUs in 2027.
As recycling of ships during the past four years has been limited to 166 ships and 256k TEUs, the average age of the fleet has increased 1.4 years s i n c e t h e b e g i n n i n g o f 2 0 2 0 . Consequently, the number of ships 20 years old or older has risen, and they now make up 3.4m TEU equal to 11% of the fleet.
If all ships 20 years old or older are recycled during the next five years, the fleet will grow to 35 8m TEU by end 2029, assuming no more ships are contracted for delivery before 2030. That is equal to 16% growth or average annual growth of 3% The segments smaller than 8k TEU would see an average annual contraction of 4% while the segments 8k TEU or larger would growonaverage7%peryear
“It would require 680k TEU per year to recycle all ships 20 years old or older during the next five years (the current annual record is 657k TEU) but actual recycling is likely to end lower. As long as ships cannot fully return to the Red Sea, recycling will likely continue to be low and at the same time the smaller ship segments tend to be recycled later than average. Therefore, average annual fleet growth during the next five years could end higher than 3%,” says Rasmussen.
Indian Ports Sector rebounds with 5.3% YoY growth in Dec 2024
NEW DELHI: The Indian ports sector witnessed a 5.3 per cent yearon-year growth in December 2024, marking a recovery after a two-month decline of 1.8 per cent year-on-year during October and November This growth was primarily driven by increased container volumes at major ports (MPs) and strong performance by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ).

while petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL) cargo rose by 4.4 per cent yearon-year However, coal cargo at MPs saw a 15 per cent decline, with thermal coal dropping 1 per cent and coking coal falling 36.1 per cent yearon-year, reflecting muted demand compared to the 5 per cent growth seen in the second quarter of FY25.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), a key container port among MPs, recorded an 11 per cent year-on-year growth in container volumes, sustaining strong performance after a 12.1 per cent rise in NovemberDecember 2024.
APSEZ volumes also rebounded, rising by 7 7 per cent year-on-year in
December 2024 after a modest 1.2 per cent growth in October and November APSEZ’s total cargo volume for December stood at 38.4 million tonne, with India-specific volumes (excluding Gangavaram and Karaikal) growing by an estimated 10 per cent year-on-year, matching the growth rate seen in the second quarter of FY25
APSEZ’s FY25 guidance of 460-480 million tonne indicates a 6-11 per cent organic volume growth, supported by contributions from new assets. These include 6 million tonne from Gopalpur (acquired in Q2), 6 million tonnes from Tanzania, and 2-3 million tonne from Vizhinjam, which became operational in December 2024
No pre-emptive tariff overhaul in Budget : Sources
NEW DELHI: The Government has decided to bide time and take a reactive – rather than pre-emptive – approach to the impending tariff threat from the incoming Donald Trump administration in the US, according to official sources. It is unlikely that the FY26 Budget, to be presented in Parliament on February 1, would undertake any anticipatory customs duty restructuring to bring down the tariff levels in response to Trump’s charges of India being a “high tariff” nation, these sources said.
At best, routine duty adjustments, including those aimed at further correction of the “inverted duty structure” would be carried out in the Budget.
Though Trump’s inauguration on January 20 will precede the Budget, a senior government functionary said that it remained to be seen what he actually intended to do, and by when. He could go the whole hog as soon as
after assuming office, or might adopt a staggered approach, the source noted, underscoring that there wasn’t any need for the country to take any preemptive measure, or hurry in this regard.
The US president-elect has on multiple occasions called India a major tariff abuser, and threatened the country of strict reciprocal moves Lately, he reiterated that his tariff policy would not be pared back, denying a Washington Post report, which suggested a rethink.
New Delhi has been maintaining that it has already lowered tariffs significantly, and that those are almost in sync with average global levels. The government has also had to face demands from many industries for tariff protection, a situation which reveals t h e i r c o n t i n u e d l a c k o f g l o b a l competitiveness.
Over a few years to FY23, India had
seen a signification tariff escalation, reversing the trend of progressive reduction of these import barriers, primarily in the wake of the pandemic. The simple average of import tariffs maintained by India had risen from a low of 13% (10.1% for non-agriculture or industrial goods) in 2009 to 18 1% (14.7%) in 2023. Import tariff is the basic customs duty (BCD) applied on items identified on the basis of a six-digit harmonised commodity description and coding system (HS Code); other imposts on inward shipments, including the integrated GST, are meant to replicate taxes suffered by domestic goods and services.
Thanks to the steps taken in the FY25 Budget, the average tariff rate of the country came down, and is around 17% now. This is much higher than the US’ 3.3%, but is comparable to other major economies like South Korea (13.4%) and China (7.5%).

TUTICORIN : V.O. Chidambaranar Port has reported an impressive leap in its windmill blade handling operations, showcasing a commitment to the renewable energy sector This fiscal year, up until December 2024, the port handled 1,869 blades—a notable 40% increase from the previous year’s 1,332 blades for the same period.
The month of December alone saw the port managing 294 blades, a staggering 234% rise compared to the previous year’s 88 blades in December 2023. Additionally, the number of handling ships increased to 75, marking a 50% growth from last year’s 49 ships during the same timeframe.
The port facilities are equipped with ample storage and cranes to ensure efficient, secure handling of the oversized blades, facilitating timely deliveries via congestion-free roads. The blades, produced in Bengaluru, Trichy, and Chennai, are exported to nations such as the U.S., Turkey, and various European countries.
Chairperson Mr Susanta Kumar Purohit praised the concerted efforts of the port’s stakeholders, emphasizing the port’s strategic role in the global export markets

Export of petroleum products up 3% in December ‘24
NEW DELHI: India’s export of petroleum products in December increased by 3.1% to 1.37 million barrels per day against 1.33 million barrels per day in the corresponding period of last fiscal 2023-24, as per data from energy cargo tracking firm Vortexa. The exports also increased by 4.5% from 1.31 million barrels per day in the previous month.
Africa emerged as the top destination for the country’s exports in December, while supplies to the traditional importers – Asia and Europe declined significantly
“As the diesel arbitrage from Asia to Europe remains closed, product exports to Europe are lacklustre in December,” said Xavier Tang, market analyst at Vortexa.
India exported 349,736 barrels per day of petroleum products to Asia last month, down 33% from 523,052 barrels per day in November. Exports to Europe declined by 7% to 33,121 barrels per day, the lowest in over four years.
“However, there has been an increase in product exports towards the Middle East, likely due to increased refinery maintenanceintheMiddleEastregion,”Tangsaid.
India primarily supplies petroleum products to countries in Europe and Asia. The country has emerged as a major fuel supplier to Europe in the past few months after European countries started boycotting Russian supplies post its invasion of Ukraine.
The exports to the Middle East increased by 52% in December at 278,155 barrels per day compared to the previous month.
Union minister for petroleum and natural gas Hardeep Singh Puri on multiple events has said that there is no shortage of oil in the market but if there are geopolitical tensions, it may increase the cost of freight for shippers.
The country exports a variety of goods via the Red Sea including petroleum products However, the traffic diversion from the Red Sea and around the Cape of Good Hope owing to geopolitical tensions over the region has added ten days to Asia-Europe journeys while also increasing fuel costs, the Government had earlier said.
COSCO SHIPPING Pioneers with the Nation’s First Initiative of Methanol Refueling for Large Dual-Fuel Container Ship
BEIJING: The first large dual-fuel container ship in China successfully refueled with methanol fuel.
On December 26, 2024, CHIMBUSCO Jiangsu successfully provided 150 tons of methanol fuel to the first 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship built by COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry in Yangzhou.
The successful refueling not only demonstrates the maturity of COSCO SHIPPING’s technology in the methanol fuel supply system but also provides strong support for the green transformation of China’s shipping industry.
To ensure the smooth execution of this refueling operation, CHIMBUSCO Jiangsu and COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Yangzhou collaborated
closely. They organized the preparation of the first “methanol refueling design plan for terminal tank trucks” for large container ships in China and obtained the principle approval certificate issued by China Classification Society.

Services exports reached an all-time high of USD 34.31 billion in October, registering an increase of 22.3 per cent year-on-year.

DG Shipping and ITF Join Forces to Boost Seafarer Wellness
MUMBAI: In a landmark development for welfare of our seafarers, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has joined forces with the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) to launch a comprehensive initiative addressing the wellbeing of India’s maritime workforce. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on January 7, 2025, in Mumbai, a significant step forward in addressing the mental health and wellbeing including physical health challenges faced by India's maritime workforce.
The MoU was formalized by Director General of Shipping, Mr Shyam Jaganathan, and ITF’s Global Inspectorate Coordinator, Mr Steve Trowsdale This partnership will establish a network of specially trained instructors across maritime training institutes, who will deliver advanced wellbeing programs to seafarer trainees and maritime professionals
“This collaboration prioritizes the mental health and overall wellbeing of our seafarers by adopting global best practices and fostering innovation,” said Mr Jaganathan at the signing ceremony. “Seafarer welfare isn’t just a focus area—it’s essential to the future of our maritime industry.”
The ceremony was attended by representatives from three key ITF-affiliated Indian seafarer unions: The Maritime Union of India (MUI), National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), and Forward Seafarers' Union of India (FSUI) Their involvement highlights the collective effort to address the unique challenges faced by Indian seafarers.
NUSI General Secretar y-cum-Treasurer ShriMilindKandalgaonkar emphasizedthetimelynature of this agreement, noting the unique pressures faced by seafarers during extended voyages. Mr. Steve Trowsdale reaffirmed ITF’s commitment to providing resources and expertise to strengthen the program’s impact.
Dr Syed Asif Altaf, Global Well-being Program Coordinator (ITF) acknowledged the years of planning and collaboration that culminated in the MoU, calling it a noble and much-needed step that will yield significant benefits for seafarers.
This partnership between DG Shipping and ITF, supported by MUI, NUSI, and FSUI, sets a new benchmark for seafarer welfare initiatives. As the program is implemented across maritime institutes, it promises to foster a more resilient, healthier workforce, equipped to navigate the demands of modern seafaring.
India’s leadership in seafarer welfare through this initiative not only strengthens the nation’s maritime sector but also serves as a model for similar efforts globally This collaborative effort reaffirms India’s commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of those who keep global trade moving—our seafarers.
CNY 2025: Expect more blanks on Asia-NAWC, says Sea-Intelligence
COPENHAGEN: This year, Chinese New Year (CNY) will fall on January 29, which means that it is only a little over 3 weeks away It also falls only a few days prior to the official launch of the new carrier alliance networks. While Chinese New Year by itself causes significant supply chain disruptions (due to blank sailings informed by a drop-off in demand), the phase-out of the existing alliance services and the phase-in of new services might amplify this impact.
On Asia-North America West Coast, looking at the capacity across the 4-week CNY period (the week in which CNY falls plus the following 3 weeks) for 2025 and comparing it to previous years, there is a very sharp capacity growth for 2025 which cannot be explained by any current demand growth factors. Current capacity deployment for 2025 is just under 1.34 million TEU for the 4-week CNY period, which is the highest across the analysed period, and even higher than during the high-demand period of 2021. This corresponds to a 33.3% growth Y/Y, and a growth of 34.1% when compared to 2026-2019.
In terms of blank sailings, carriers have so far scheduled blanked capacity of 9.0%, which is the lowest across the analysed period, and in sharp contrast with the 22.8% blanked in 2024, and the average 2016-2019 reduction of 18.3%. Just to put this into context, the blanked percentage in 2021 (where pandemic demand was surging) was higher at 10.7%.
Under normal circumstances, this would mean significant blank sailings announcements in the upcoming weeks, since it is highly unlikely that carriers
would be satisfied with this level of excess capacity. This would result in a situation reminiscent of 2023 and 2024, where significant capacity cuts were made very close to CNY
However, there is also a potential unknown: the phase-in of the new networks by MSC, Gemini Cooperation, and Premier Alliance. This introduces an uncertainty, whereby the carriers might prioritise getting their vessels phased into the new networks, at the expense of not blanking as much capacity as usual.
