Tufail Chemical Industries partners with A.P. Moller - Maersk for digitalising their supply chain management KARACHI: Tufail Chemical Industries and Maersk Pakistan signed a partnership earlier this week wherein Maersk would provide ‘Maersk Flow’, a digital tool, to Tufail Chemical to streamline and manage their supply chains efficiently. The partnership marks a significant step towards modernising logistics and improving supply chain performance with less time and effort. Tufail Chemical Industries conducts business with tech and appliance industries and has been importing plastic raw material, industrial chemicals, aluminium products, and polymer for their manufacturing processes. Tufail Chemical Industries has now built additional manufacturing capacity and is not only satisfying local requirements but also expanding into global market with export footprint. “Expansion of our business has led to increased complexity in our supply chains. Challenges such as lack of visibility on inbound shipments, milestones updates, documentation status and communication with our suppliers became more prominent, and ultimately started impacting our day-to-day routines,” Pe r v e z Tu f a i l , C o Chairman, Tufail Chemical Industries. Maersk Pakistan, Tufail Chemical Industries’ ocean transportation partner, stepped in to offer a pilot run of ‘Maersk Flow ’, a digital supply chain management tool to streamline their supply chains. The ‘Maersk Flow’ solution enables transparency in critical supply chain processes and ensures that the flow of goods and documents is executed as planned. It also reduces manual work and costly mistakes, while empowering logistics professionals with all the current and historical data they need to sustainably improve their supply chain. Saira Yasin, Director Exports, Tufail Chemical Industries added, “With ‘Maersk Flow’ our team is able to plan our operations accurately, thus avoiding excess inventory at the warehouse and we are now able to shift our end products rapidly to the market.”
“Every day, thousands of products are moving through our customer’s supply chain, on multiple carriers, coming from and reaching many supply chain partners and stakeholders. This complexity has traditionally been managed fully manually via spreadsheets, emails and phone calls, which despite lots of hard work is leading to reduced visibility and control – and ultimately higher costs or lost sales. With ‘Maersk
Flow’ we have offered Tufail Chemical Industries to take full control of their supply chain management and ensure that the flow of goods and documents is executed as planned, “ said, Wajeeh Ud Din Ahmed, Chief Commercial Ofcer, Maersk Pakistan. ‘Maersk Flow’ extends Maersk’s customer reach and strengthens the company’s position as an industry leader in digital solutions. It also plays the role of an important link in the integrated logistics solutions offered by Maersk to its customers while ensuring all their end-to-end logistics are taken care of under the same roof.
DP World would soon visit the 250 acre site earmarked for the Inland Port facility : J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha DUBAI: DP World is set to build an inland port in Jammu and Kashmir as part of plans by the emirate to invest in the Indian territory, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said recently. The Centre last year said Dubai, part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), would invest in infrastructure and other projects in the disputed region claimed by India and Pakistan but ruled in parts by both.
Sinha, who was in Dubai last week to promote investment, said DP World would soon visit the 2 5 0 acre site e ar mark e d f o r the inland po rt facility. "We will finalise it shortly," he was quoted in Reuters, describing the project as a "firm commitment" by stateowned DP World. A DP World spokesperson said the company had a "productive meeting" with Sinha on Thursday and that it was preparing a proposal for the project.

India to overtake Japan as Asia's 2nd largest economy by 2030: IHS LONDON: India is likely to overtake Japan as Asia's second-largest economy by 2030 when its GDP is also projected to surpass that of Germany and the UK to rank as world's No.3, IHS Markit said in a report. Currently, India is the sixth-largest economy in the world, behind the US, China, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom. “India's nominal GDP measured in USD terms is forecast to rise from USD 2.7 trillion in 2021 to USD 8.4 trillion by 2030," IHS Markit Ltd said. "This rapid pace of economic expansion would result in the size of Indian GDP exceeding Japanese GDP by 2030, making India the second-largest economy in the Asia-Pacific region." By 2030, the Indian economy would
also be larger in size than the largest Wester n European economies of Germany, France and the UK. "Overall, India is expected to continue to be one of the world's fastestgrowing economies over the next decade," it said. The long-term outlook for the Indian economy is supported by a number of key growth drivers. "An important positive factor for India is its large and fast-growing middle class, which is helping to drive consumer spending," IHS Markit said, forecasting that the country's consumption expenditure will double from USD 1.5 trillion in 2020 to USD 3 trillion by 2030. For the full fiscal year 2021-22 (April 2021 to March 2022), India's real GDP
growth rate is projected to be 8.2 per cent, rebounding from the severe contraction of 7.3 per cent year-on-year in 2020-21, IHS Markit said. The Indian economy is forecast to continue growing strongly in the 2022-23 fiscal year, at a pace of 6.7 per cent. The rapidly growing domestic consumer market as well as its large industrial sector have made India an increasingly important investment destination for a wide range of multinationals in many sectors, including manufacturing, infrastructure and services. "The large increase in FDI inflows to India that has been evident over the past five years is also continuing with strong momentum in 2020 and 2021," it said.
FIEO signs MoU with RebelCorp, facilitating MSMEs to do business at affordable cost N E W D E L H I : Fe d e r a t i o n o f I n d i a n Export Organisations signed a MoU with RebelCorp on Jan 06, 2022 at Mumbai for the purpose of facilitating the individuals and MSMEs including the new exporters, enterprises and artisans have an online digital presence with the tools needed to do business in today’s market environment at a very affordable cost and without having any technical or coding knowledge with the help of RebelCorp’s No Code, All-in-one Easy to Use Website Builder.
Speaking on the occasion of MoU signing, Mr Saad Khan, Founder & COO, RebelCorp said that “Team RebelCorp is thrilled to be a part of this journey to help more than 30,000 members of FIEO in helping them create a digital identity that they can easily manage themselves and help them in growing their global customer base. The RebelCorp technology platform will enable all exporters to enter the next decade with all the tools they are going to need to do business digitally for 2022 and beyond.” Mr Ak ash Chatur vedi, Founder & CEO added that they would
be designing special website templates exclusively for the exporter members of FIEO, keeping in mind their special requirement as exporters catering to the global market and need for integrated ecommerce module at very highly subsidised subscription plans. Mrs Sujata Uchil, Regional Head, FIEO Western Region while signing the MoU mentioned that FIEO will be inviting RebelCorp to organise dedicated workshops and training programs for member exporters to encourage them to own and manage their own website with ease.
Allow 24x7 truck movement till ports in Maharashtra, Karnataka to raise pace of sugar export: AISTA MUMBAI: With maximum quantities of exportable sugar getting lifted from Maharashtra and Karnataka putting pressure on logistics, trade body AISTA recently demanded respective state governments to allow truck movement 24X7 to increase the pace of export. Sugar mills have signed export deals for shipment of 40 lakh tonnes during the October-December period of the ongoing 2021-22 season, out of which 16.80 lakh tonne have been shipped. The remaining 4.70 lakh tonne is yet to be exported, the All India Sugar Trade A s s o c i a t i o n ( A I S TA ) s a i d i n a statement.
"Most of the sugar for export is getting lifted from sugar mills of Maharashtra and Karnataka. This has put severe pressure on the logistics in the states," AISTA said. Further, the truck movement to JSW Raigarh and Angre ports are allowed from 7 am to 6 pm only, which is "hampering movement of sugar consignment" to these ports, it said. "It is requested that the Governments of Maharashtra and Karnataka allow movement of trucks 24x7 to increase the pace of sugar exports," it added.
AISTA also said that the Amba Ghat road, which is the shortest distance to reach Angre and JSW ports, is closed due to landslides in the monsoon season. The Maharashtra and Karnataka governments may be requested to expedite the road repair work and complete it in a time-bound manner, it added. The trade body also requested the railway ministry to work on railway connectivity from the Kolhapur region to Jaigarh and Angre ports for smooth movement of sugar consignments to these ports.
Forex reserves dip by $1.46 bn in the last week of 2021 MUMBAI: India's foreign currency reserves dipped by $1.466 billion in the last week of 2021 to $633.614 billion, Reserve Bank of India's data showed. This reflects the fall in the valuation of reser ves held in other global currencies. RBI does not give any
reason behind the rise or fall in reserves. Foreign currency assets, which show the change in the valuation, fell by $1.480 billion to $569.89 billion. Forex reserves fell nearly $4billion in December due to unabated dollar
outflows as foreign portfolio investors (FPI) continue to offload their investments in local debt and equities ahead of Christmas and New Year holidays. FPIs offloaded nearly $3 billion of their investment in December alone.

APEDA identies potential districts of UP under Varanasi agri-export hub to boost exports NEW DELHI: The Commerce Ministry's arm APEDA has said it has identified potential districts of Uttar Pradesh to be covered under the Varanasi Agri-Export Hub (VAEH) for promotion of exports from that region. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has taken initiatives to promote exports from the Purvanchal region of the state through development of VAEH, an official statement said.
The Purvanchal division of the state covers districts of Varanasi, Mirzapur, Azamgarh, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Basti, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Chandauli and Sant Ravidas Nagar. It added that 20,000 tonne of agri-produce have been exported from Purvanchal region in the last six months. "Out of these shipments, about 5,000 tonne of fresh fruits and vegetables and 15,000 tonne of cereals have been exported to Vietnam, Gulf nations, Nepal and Bangladesh by all modes of transportation," it said.
Outlook 2022 in the backdrop of pandemic CHENNAI : Will 2022 be exceptionally different from 2021 for Global supply chain, perhaps not. Last two years have been quite challenging across sectors, but these challenges have been good lesson specially for adaptative and disruptive business practices. Darvin theory of “Survival of Fittest”, which suggested that “organisms best adjusted to their environment are successful in surviving”, holds true for supply chain industry as well. World is welcoming new year on a backdrop of new wave of pandemic and the rate of spread of pandemic is higher than previous waves. Although there are lesser causalities and better preparedness to handle, but the challenges will be unavoidable specially for the sector like logistics and supply chain. Transportation Capacity and turnaround time: In last two years mismatch of demand and supply of transportation capacity have been critical on Global front. Strict lockdown at Chinese ports in 2021 disturbed global containers flow. Un availability of containers have negatively impacted waiting time of ships at various ports. As per industry data, China – US end to end ocean transit time has doubled in last 2 years. In pre-pandemic days TAT was hovering around 40-45 days, which is currently around 75 – 80 days and this situation is not expected back to normal in short term. On the other side, if any outbreak of omicron happens in China, the situation of container supply will be more constrained. For global air
cargo, available capacity is still lower than pre pandemic level. Although capacity and count of freighters have increased in last 2 years, but lesser availability of belly space has resulted in net decrease. Since last few days restriction on global flights are increasing, which is going to reduce availability of air cargo capacity in near future. On domestic front capacity will not be a challenge for surface cargo, but air cargo will remain too much dependent on degree of restriction during surge period of pandemic. Since beginning of pandemic domestic air cargo has dipped almost 15% in volume terms, which may witness some recovery in year to come. Freight rates: Ocean Freight rates skyrocketed in year 2021, which was result of multiple factors like, increased consumer goods demand, unavailability of containers, Suez Canal obstruction, high waiting time of ships at ports etc. On some of the sectors ocean freight soared as high as ten times of pre-pandemic level. In last few months there was some
correction and stabilization in rates, still they are multifold higher than 2019 level. As per the data released by freightos.com, the FBX global container index (on 17th Dec) was at $9513 against $3004 a year back. This situation of high ocean freight will continue. in shorter term there might be some fluctuations due to Lunar new year, but no significant relief is visible in year 2022. On domestic front surface transportation rates have also soared almost by 12-13% on YOY basis. This is driven by increase in input cost. 2022 will further see hike in freight cost on account of increase in equipment cost (Euro VI vehicles), which has not yet been factored in current rates. Inventory level: In the shadow of new wave, inventory holding by companies is likely to increase. Last two waves of covid have given strong lessons about cons of JIT and lean inventory levels in time of disturbed supply chain. Increase in inventory will have definite impact on working capital blockage, but given the risk of disruption we expect higher inventory level will be norm for 2022. Diversification of sourcing strategy: Global supply chain will relook on vendor mix in order to realign it to multi geography sourcing. Single geography sourcing has proven to be very risky in last 2 years of pandemic. Dependence on single source of procurement, in spite of saving of few dollars had led to stagnation in global supply chain of companies leading to huge losses. Disruption of semiconductor supplies from specific geography has given shock waves to manufacturers in multiple industry segments. More realignment in manufacturing setup will also take place in year to come. The driver for such shift is linked to mitigation of risk and reduction of dependence on single country as manufacturing base. Countries like India, Malaysia, Vietnam will be some of the preferred location for new manufacturing centers. Digitization and process automation: Higher adoption of technology, digitization and automation started almost a decade back in order to drive efficiency, but the importance of such practices got reinforced amid the covid crisis. Real time Information availability worked as a key weapon in handling uncertainty of supply chain. Companies that were equipped with digital technologies were fast to respond fluctuations of demand and supply compared to other peer group companies. While higher degree of automation supported in keeping operations live with limited manpower. In 2022 when threat of more waves of Covid is hovering, adoption of digitization and automation will take next.
