Maersk celebrates 30 years in India During the three decades, A.P. Moller - Maersk, recognising India as one of the most important trade markets in the world, has con nuously invested in developing and growing ocean shipping, terminals, logis cs & services, se ng up a technology centre and most importantly crea ng large scale employment MUMBAI: In August 1990, Maersk made its humble beginnings in India with a single feeder service between Mumbai Port and Dubai Port. Being served by Maersk Clementine with a capacity of 436 twenty-feet equivalent units of containers (TEU), this was the first step into the Indian market by Maersk. Fully aware of the country's trade potential, Maersk kept building its network over the last 30 years in India to grow into a trusted logistics partner for almost a fifth of the country's trade today and moves over 2.6 million TEUs in a year. This scale of operations is possible through a network that spreads across 15 ports in India, serving customers through 25 sales offices and moving cargo through more than 70 inland acceptance points. enabler in Maersk's digitalisation roadmap by tapping into new technologies and solutions to significantly improve the customer experience opportunities and provide business solutions.
A. P. Moller - Maersk recognised India as a land of opportunities and started investing in port terminals too. In 2004, APM Terminals Mumbai, also known as Gateway Terminals India, was established at the Nhava-Sheva Port in Navi Mumbai and controlling stake in Gujarat Pipavav Port was acquired in 2005. Since then, these two terminals have fuelled the trade possibilities in and out of India for A.P. Moller - Maersk. APM Terminals Mumbai has been the busiest Container terminals in the country over the last few years and has moved more than 2 million TEUs annually in 2018 and 2019. The continuous investments in developing infrastructure are a testimony of the company's long-term commitment to the Indian market.
Maersk has also recognised the potential of the Indian talent. To capitalise on this, Maersk set up the Global Service Centre (GSC) in India. Maersk GSC partners with company's various business units to identify offshoring opportunities and provides business solutions. With several offices in India across Chennai, Pune, Mumbai and Bangalore, the GSC supports Maersk's global digital transformation by tapping local talent and partnering with the industry ecosystem. Strategically located in India's Silicon Valley Bangalore, is also the GSC's Tech Centre which plays the role of a key
Maersk has been the pioneer of digitalisation in logistics in India. Especially in the COVID-19 pandemic, the company's continuous efforts of investing in transformation and digitalisation paid off when Maersk was able to offer digital solutions to its customers enabling trade to continue with almost no disruptions despite country-wide lockdowns. Furthermore, being an integrated container logistics provider, Maersk has been playing the role of a one-stopshop to its customers and offering end-to-end logistics solutions from inland transportation by road or rail, terminal offerings, warehousing, yards, customs clearances and documentation and shipping on ocean, thus taking complexity out of supply chains for them. With approximately 17,000 Indian nationals employed in its operations in India and globally and with a majority of its manning or crew appointments for vessels being done from India, Maersk has not only believed in the potential of the country but also acted upon it with a commitment of this magnitude.

Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chariman, JNPT speaking at the roundtable interaction

Container Shipping stages sharp rebound near pre-Covid levels : Jeremy Nixon CEO - ONE SINGAPORE: Container shipping activity has staged a sharp rebound in recent months and is nearing prepandemic levels — but the outlook remains clouded in uncertainty, a top industry executive said recently. “Here we are in September, and actually, we’ve almost recovered back to the levels we had in global container volumes compared with pre-Covid,” Mr. Jeremy Nixon, the Chief Executive Ofcer of Singapore-based Ocean Network Express (ONE) said. Nixon now sees signs of a V-shaped rebound underway, after a six-month “roller coaster” ride that began as a supply shock concentrated around China and evolved into a worldwide demand problem by Spring. The coronavirus outbreak was first reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year, and has since spread to the rest of the world, ravaging demand as well as the global economy. He attributed the expected rebound to three main factors: • a surge in demand for personal protection equipment (such as masks and gloves), and medical goods; • inventory build-up during the shutdowns are returning online again; • a shift in consumer purchasing behavior as people cut back on travel and hospitality and spend more time and money at home. “What we’ve seen in the last two or three months, those items around the home — whether it’s home improvements or enhancements to people’s home offices, electronics or even exercise bicycles — we’re seeing that sector has really picked up, and a lot of that production actually moves in containers as opposed to air freight,” Nixon explained. Fragile rebound, weakness remains ONE’s liner network services more than 100 countries, operating in a sector that moves over 90% of global goods, which gives the company a unique window into global economic activity. Though there appears to be a rising tide lifting most boats, the group’s CEO says some pockets of weakness remain. “A lot of the automotive production, whether in Europe, America, Asia — particularly in Japan — is still quite weak,” Nixon explained. On a regional basis, the recovery has become more
widespread as lockdown measures ease. “Maybe some of the demand around intra-Asia is still recovering but we can see Europe is strong, North America is strong and even Latin America has picked up as well.” Nixon cautions, however, that relative to the V-shaped recovery that the industry witnessed in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, the current Mr. Jeremy Nixon rebound looks more fragile. “Our exuberance is curtailed at the moment because we don’t really know how 2021-22 is going to play out. How much of this is a temporary build up in demand?” He also pointed to the risk that in Winter “some pickup in the pandemic situation means curtailment of certain activities and production.” Trade war effect? Before Covid-19 threatened to devastate container shipping, the sector was already grappling with the U.S.-China trade war and the specter of additional tariffs. Nixon played down fears, however, that a further deterioration in ties between the world’s two largest economies could dent the industry’s recovery in the months ahead. “We don’t really like the tension. We don’t like politics interfering with global trade and supply chains, but maybe it’s part of the backstory these days. It would seem, at the moment, it’s not impacting cargo flows too much,” he said. “At the end of the day, we’ll still move the same amount of product on the ocean, it’s just a question of from which origin and to which destination.” Nixon is not convinced about longer-term projections that the pandemic could usher in an era of de-globalization as countries rethink overseas production and respond to nationalist pressure. “I remain an optimist in terms of overall efficiency of global supply chains and being able to use shipping as the most efficient way to move products, I think that’s going to continue for some time to come,” he said.

Oman Container Lines among Best 55 companies in the World : Alphaliner Cont’d. from Pg. 3
The OCL’s global ranking has brought the name of the Sultanate of Oman among top countries in the sector. This has become possible only due to the focus of the country’s leadership on the development of the infrastructure a n d l o g i s t i c s ’ s e c t o r, s a i d Al Nadhairi.
For his part, Wasam Al Najjar, G e n e r a l M a n a g e r, c o r p o r a t e planning at the Oman Shipping Company said, “There is no doubt that OCL entering Alphaline index among 100 global companies is a highlights the company ’s role in linking Omani ports to the main global trading routes through its Oman Express Line, in addition to its
role in linking the Sultanate’s ports with UAE’s through its Gulf Express line. He noted that OCL aimed to connect India and Oman to the Upper Gulf through combining OEX and GEX service, as well as inaugurating the Oman Gulf Express (OGEX) ser vice; linking Salalah, Duqm and Sohar in Oman with Arabian Gulf ports.
States expedite work on Dedicated Freight Corridor NEW DELHI: Following Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal’s letter to the Chief Ministers of nine states seeking to remove bottlenecks which have hampered work on the Rs 81,000 crore dedicated freight corridor project, several states have expedited land acquisition clearances and deployed police in areas where issues of law and order were holding up work. According to officials aware of the development land acquisition clearances have been provided in the past week by states including Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Gujarat. Following concerns raised by the Prime Minister’s Office over delays in the completion of the Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC), one of the largest rail
infrastructure projects, Railways cited “poor progress of work” by contractors and raised concerns over law and order in Uttar Pradesh and delays in construction by Gujarat, Haryana and Punjab governments on August 26. Railways identified delays in both the Eastern and Western dedicated freight corridors and revised the deadline for completion to June 2022 from its earlier target of December 2021. “In Bihar ’s Rohtas district, a detailed review was done by the DM (District Magistrate), and three teams have been formed to expedite payment and physical possession. Deployment of police at two road over bridge (ROBs) has been approved. Police force have also been deployed in Aurangabad,” one
of the officials said. On August 26,Goyal wrote to the chief ministers of nine states including Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, West Bengal, Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Jharkhand, highlighting how the dedicated freight corridor has been facing “long-pending issues” that remain “unresolved”. Goyal flagged issues such as land acquisition, pending arbitrations, demands from local residents, and the slow pace of work by state authorities. The Centre has also agreed to the Punjab Government’s demand for borrowing money from Railways’ project implementing arm the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) for construction of ROBs.
Tripura receives first-ever Inland Shipping cargo from Bangladesh AGARTALA: Relations between India and Bangladesh reached another milestone recently, following the operationalization of the Daukandi (Bangladesh)-Sonamura (Tripura) Inland Waterway Protocol route. This would be the first-ever export consignment from Bangladesh to Tripura through the inland waterways. Bangladeshi vessel, MB Premier carrying cement started from Daukandi on September 3 and will reach Sonamura on September 5 traversing 93 km along the river Gumti. The cargo would be received at Sonamura in the presence of the Chief Minister of
Tripura, Shri Biplab Kumar Deb and India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Smt Riva Ganguly Das. The operationalization of this new protocol route, besides further facilitating overall bilateral trade with Bangladesh, will provide an economical, faster, safer and environment-friendly mode of transport and will result in substantial economic benefits to local communities on both sides. The Protocol for Inland Water Trade & Transit (PIWTT) was signed between India and Bangladesh in 1972 to provide inland waterways connectivity between the two countries, particularly with the
North Eastern Region of India and also to enhance bilateral trade. In the last year, approx. 3.5 MMT of cargo was transported between India and Bangladesh on the protocol routes. The scope of PIWTT has been further expanded by the signing of the 2nd Addendum to PIWTT on May 20, 2020, with the inclusion of additional routes and ports of calls. The inclusion of Sonamura – Daudkhandi stretch of Gumti river (93 km) as a new route in the Protocol will improve the connectivity of Tripura and the adjoining States with Indian and Bangladesh’s economic centres and will help the hinterland of both the countries.

In the month of September 2020 till 6 September 2020 Indian Railways loading was 19.19 million tonnes which is 10.41% (1.81 million tonnes) higher compare to last year’s loading for the same period (17.38 million tonnes). In this period Indian Railways earned
Rs. 1836.15 crores from freight loading which is also Rs. 129.68 crores higher compare to last year’s earnings for the same period (Rs. 1706.47 crores) In the month of September 2020 till 6 September 2020 Indian Railways loading was 19.19 million tonnes which includes 8.11 million tonnes of coal, 2.59 million tonnes of iron ore, 1.2 million tonnes of foodgrains, 1.03 million tonnes of fertilizers and 1.05 million tonnes of cement (excluding clinker).
It is worth mentioning that a number of concessions/ discounts are also being given in Indian Railways to make Railways Freight movement very attractive. China’s export growth quickens in August, imports edge lower BEIJING: China’s export growth accelerated in August while imports edged lower as the world’s secondlargest economy extended its recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. Exports rose 9.5 per cent over a year earlier to USD 235.2 billion, up from July’s 7.2 per cent growth, customs data showed on Monday. Imports declined 2.1 per cent to USD 176.3 billion, compared with the previous month’s 1.4 per cent contraction. China’s exporters have benefited from its relatively early reopening from a shutdown to fight the virus while competitors in many other countries
still face anti-disease controls that disrupt business. Exports to the United States rose 20 per cent to USD 44.8 billion despite tariff hikes imposed by the Trump administration in a fight with Beijing over its technology ambitions and trade surplus. Imports of American goods gained 2 per cent to USD 10.5 billion. The changes were due mostly to lower prices and comparison with last Au g u s t ’ s r e l a t i v e w e a k e x p o r t s , according to Julian Evans-Pritchard of Capital Economics. Evans-Pritchard estimated the volume of goods exported rose 9.7 per cent from a year
earlier, while import volumes rose 9.5 per cent. Exports to the 27-nation European Union, China’s biggest foreign market, fell 20.1 per cent from a year earlier to USD 35.7 billion. Imports of European goods tumbled 29.7 per cent to USD 22.5 billion. China’s global trade surplus swelled by 72 per cent over a year earlier to USD 58.9 billion. That was down from July’s USD 62.3 billion gap. Chinese importers have benefited from a slump in global prices for oil and many other goods due to weak demand caused by virus-related shutdowns.
India to maintain sugar export subsidies to boost shipment: Report NEW DELHI: India is set to maintain sugar export subsidies for a third year in a row in a bid to reduce surplus stocks and ensure domestic prices don’t fall below a Government benchmark, three sources involved in
policy making, Reuters reported. The subsidies are designed to boost exports from the world’s second biggest sugar producer though increased shipments could put further pressure on global prices, which have already
fallen more than 10% so far this year. “Sugar export incentives for 6 million tonnes could be announced before the end of this month,” said a Government official involved in policy making who declined to be named.
TT Club’s Signposts to a Digital Future Leading freight transport and logis cs insurer TT Club is reflec ng the evolving digital landscape in its new logo and revamped website. Increased accessibility to data, informa on and streamlined processes are the key aims of the insurance specialist’s investments in digi sa on. LONDON: Although COVID-19 has accelerated digitalisation, TT had already embarked on its path to digital transformation. Planned investment has now reached a stage were TM Connect has improved on the existing ClaimsTrac tool and a new website has allowed increased access to TT’s valued loss prevention advisory services. Such digital advances will increasingly allow TT to work in more innovative ways, adding value for its insured through the application of robotics, artificial intelligence, mining big data and other digital functionality. As part of its 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2019, TT undertook to investigate what the next 25 years in the international logistics industry would bring. What it found was profound changes in the use of digital services*. “In responding to these findings our investment is taking increasing advantage of digital opportunities to enhance the customer facing elements of our business namely underwriting,
claims fulfilment and loss prevention,” explained Charles Fenton, TT’s Chief Executive Officer. “Our new logo reflects TT’s focus on the digital sphere, by adapting the logo to work seamlessly in the on and offline world.” TT Club’s risk management role, delivered through its loss prevention advisory service, is crucial to the protection of client’s operations across the multi-modal transport industry. The new website is in part designed to assist t h e a c c e s s to such inf o r matio n, ensuring TT’s wealth of loss prevention articles and publications is available to not only its insured, but the industry as a whole. TT continues to explore multimedia channels through which to distribute their advice, including the new website, social media, TT’s series of successful seminars and its recently introduced programme of webinars. Tt’s investment in digitisation looks not only to improve access to loss prevention materials, but also to better aid its Members with the management
of their insurance. Available via its website, TM Connect is TT’s new online ser vices platfor m, developed by TT Club’s managers Thomas Miller. It is designed to enhance online accessibility to services and data for Members and their brokers. “TM Connect affords 24/7 access to all insurance documents, whether it is policies, payments and debit notes, premium balances or claims records. Indeed, the portal acts as successor to T T ’ s v e n e r a t e d C l a i m s Tr a c a n d undoubtedly represents the future of communication with our Members” said Fenton. These latest investments by TT Club are clear signposts to a digital future in which the technological opportunities that continue to present themselves will be investigated. TT intends to further exploit such opportunities as appropriate to better serve its clients as they tackle the dynamic challenges constantly presented throughout the global supply chain.

ONE India goes Live for Direct e-Do on PCS1x for Nhava Sheva India MUMBAI: ONE (Ocean Network Express Pte Ltd.,) emerged from the legacy of three Japanese liner companies, who historically prided themselves on high level service quality and process excellence. With a global fleet of over 250 vessels, active participation in all major global trade lanes, deployment of the latest IT systems and an extensive terminal ownership portfolio. ONE positions itself as being “large enough to survive, but still small enough to care”. The core values of ONE include Quality, Reliability, Innovation and Customer Satisfaction. Not a surprise then that ONE INDIA (Ocean Network Express (India) Pvt. Ltd.) became the first Carrier to launch their electronic DO via PCS1x. Dr Janardana Rao, MD IPA, Indian Ports Association which is the body that owns and manages the PCS1x), congratulated ONE India for becoming the first MLO (Main Line Operator) to embrace the feature provided to the trade and urged all other Carriers to step forth and commence eDO release via PCS1x. This initiative will significantly improve efficiency while also taking Indian Logistics closer to becoming a paperless regime. Dr Rao also congratulated the Portall team for the excellent support given to onboard all stakeholders (To be approved by MD IPA). Indian Ports Association (IPA) launched a value-added Electronic Delivery Order (eDO) facility - on its cloud based new generation Port Community System ‘PCS1x’. Govt. of India has ensured that the facility can be availed free of charge by all stakeholders on PCS1x. Henceforth all eDOs of ONE India will be released directly via PCS1x via API for vessels calling at Nhava Sheva
and their respective CFS’s and ICD’s JNPT currently and will soon expand to other Ports such as Kolkata, Mundra, P i p a v a v, H a z i r a , G o a , M a n g a l o r e , K a t t u p a l l i , Krishnapatnam, thus pan India. With the roll-out of the service, ONE India customers will be further facilitated and gain considerably; saving time and money in clearing cargo and speed up Delivery Order extension and the Empty offload processes. Field agents of Importers and Customs Brokers need not wait at line offices and can be utilised more productively. The eDO on PCS1x is a FREE module to perform all eDO-related activities including e-invoice and e-payments for which IPA and Shipping Ministry after deliberation with Trade associations has come forward with a detailed SOP, with highly secured data interchange between requester and provider. Stakeholders can request invoice, view invoice, make payment and secure eDO on PCS1x itself. ONE INDIA will inform all its customers to utilise the eDO service directly via PCS1x only. Trade and industry pan India may obtain registration/ enrolment on PCS 1x namely https://www.indianpcs.gov.in/ at the earliest to access these services if not already registered. For more information please call toll-free 1800 11 5055 or write to – pcssupport@portall.in. Mr. Masaki Osawa – MD of ONE INDIA said - I am very proud of becoming the first carrier to launch eDO via PCS1x and also of having the professional teams with their deepest commitment. We, Ocean Network Express, continue to further strengthen on business processes with customers through increased standardization and digitalization. Our commitments are 1. Improve Customer Service Quality, 2. Promote eCommerce and 3. Enhance Automation and Digitalization. We thank teams at IPA & technical partner Portall for their support and look forward to more milestones.
CEVA Logistics makes major strategic investment and implements new partnership with rollout of CargoWise across Global network • CEVA will standardize and simplify global opera onal processes with integrated logis cs execu on pla orm CargoWise • This major investment will accelerate companywide digitaliza on as part of CEVA Logis cs’ IMPACT 2020 plan. MARSEILLE: CEVA Logistics, part of the CMA CGM Group, a world leader in transport and logistics, has commenced the rollout of CargoWise, the integrated logistics execution platform. With this strategic investment, CEVA Logistics will simplify and standardize all 4PL operational processes across its global network. CargoWise will be implemented over the course of the next five years, as part of a planned process, replacing multiple legacy systems and delivering greater efficiency within the business. Improving operational efciency The switch to CargoWise will enable CEVA Logistics teams around the globe to have real-time visibility of freight forwarding and Customs actions on a single platform. As a purpose-built solution, Cargowise gives employees access to the same information in a single database across all functions, offices, countries and languages, furthering the CEVA Logistics digital transformation. By the end of 2022, 50% of all CEVA Logistics locations will be fully operational on the CargoWise platform with the whole project completed and deployed by 2025. A companywide digitalization The move to CargoWise is a key part of CEVA Logistics’ IMPACT 2020 plan which aims to both grow the business and improve operational efficiency. Other recent investments as part of that plan include the purchase of a majority stake in AMI Manica in Africa and the launch of the MyCEVA platform for customers.
Says CEVA Logistics’ CEO, Mathieu Friedberg, “By implementing CargoWise, CEVA Logistics will further improve productivity and efficiency as we strive to lead the way in multi-modal forwarding and contract logistics operations. Thanks to its experience across the transport and logistics sector, CargoWise is the right choice to provide this new digital platform. CEVA Logistics recently invested to improve the customer journey and this implementation allows us to develop a high-level employee journey as well.” WiseTech Global Founder and CEO, Richard White, said, “We are extremely pleased to welcome CEVA Logistics to our global rollout family. This is a fantastic decision for their business and its thousands of logistics specialists. “The world of logistics has experienced significant upheaval over the past six months with the digitization and automation of processes critical for future success. CargoWise will empower and enable CEVA Logistics to significantly improve efficiencies across its logistics and supply chain operations and continue to build its presence and strength globally.” Licensed across 160 countries, WiseTech’s flagship logistics platform, CargoWise, enables logistics service providers to execute highly complex transactions in areas such as freight for warding, customs clearance, warehousing, shipping, tracking, land transport, ecommerce, and cross-border compliance, allowing them to manage their operations on one database across multiple users, functions, countries, languages, and currencies.
