More than 1 mn TEU worth of Boxships have changed hands so far this year LONDON: Records keep falling across every segment of the container shipping industry. In sale and purchase, 1.025 mn TEU of secondhand tonnage changed hands in the first half of the year, an all-time high for any six-month period according to data from Alphaliner. A total of 301 ships were sold in H1, with sales remaining
very strong in the first week of July. “Despite the sharp increase in asset prices this year, there remains a significant lag between ship values and charter rates which carriers and NOOs are keen to exploit,” Alphaliner explained in its latest weekly Cont’d. Back Pg. report.

Latin America continues to be a large market for India’s Exports NEW DELHI: India’s exports to Latin America amounted to $12.74 billion in 2020-21 (AprilMarch), according to the figures released by the Commerce Ministry of India. The exports to the region have declined marginally by 3.3 per cent from $13.18 billion in 2019-20. This is not bad in view of the fact that India’s total global exports have declined by 7 per cent from $313 billion to $291 billion in the same period. Brazil continued as the number 1 destination of India’s exports to the region, with shipments valued at $4.25 billion. The other major destinations were: · Mexico: $3.08 billion · Colombia: $865 million · Chile: $805 million · Peru: $765 million · Argentina: $688 million · Venezuela: $557 million Car exports Latin America accounted for 30.5 per cent ($1.3 billion) of India’s global car exports of $4.3 billion. Mexico was the largest global market for Indian cars with $860 million in value of shipments. The US was second with $512 million. Other major destinations were Chile ($201 million) and Peru ($86 million). Motorcycles India was the second-largest supplier of motorcycles to Latin America with $577 million in shipments. This is 28 per cent of India’s global exports, valued at $2 billion. Major destinations were Colombia ($190 million), Mexico ($90 million), Guatemala ($84 million) and Peru ($53 million). Colombia was the third-largest global market for Indian motorcycles after Nigeria and Nepal. Some years back, Colombia was the number 1 destination. Indian brands are market leaders in Colombia and
Guatemala. Hero Motors has invested $80 million in a production plant in Cali, Colombia. Pharmaceuticals India is the fifth-largest supplier of pharmaceuticals to Latin America. Major destinations of India’s pharma exports were Brazil ($317 million), Peru ($128 million), Chile ($123 million), Mexico ($114 million), Colombia ($68 million), Dominican Republic ($54 million), Venezuela ($51 million), Guatemala ($48 million), Bolivia ($29 million) and Ecuador ($28 million). India’s exports to Latin American countries in comparison with neighbours, traditional trading partners India’s exports to some of the distant Latin American countries are more than the exports to neighbouring countries or traditional trade partners with same or more population. This is a trend of the last several years. Examples: • $209 million in exports to Dominican Republic (population 11 million), which is more than the $169 million to Cambodia (population 16 million) • $331 million to Guatemala (population 11 million) versus $225 million to Kazakhstan (population 19 million) • $865 million to Colombia (population 50 million) more than the exports of $779 million to the neighbouring Myanmar (population 53 million) • $4.24 billion to Brazil and $3 billion to Mexico versus exports to Russia ($2.6 billion), Nigeria ($3.1 billion), Egypt ($2.2 billion) and Canada ($2.9 billion) India exported more motorcycles (190 million) to Colombia than to neighbouring markets such as Bangladesh (98 million). India’s car exports to Chile, valued at $201
million, are more than the exports to Nepal ($85 million), Bangladesh ($41 million), Sri Lanka ($3 million) and Myanmar ($4 million). Imports Major Latin American suppliers were Brazil ($3 billion), Mexico ($2.85 billion), Argentina ($2.63 billion), Peru ($1.52 billion), Colombia ($1.4 billion), Chile ($1.18 billion), Bolivia ($1.16 billion) and Venezuela ($714 million). Venezuela used to be the major source of imports in the region for the last 15 years with supply of large volumes of crude oil. Due to the US sanctions, Venezuelan oil supply to India has come down drastically from its peak of around $10 billion. Market Latin America, the region of 19 countries, has a total population of 620 million and GDP of $5.4 trillion. The region, which had a historic GDP contraction of 7.7 per cent in 2020, is forecast to rebound with a growth of 3.7 per cent in 2021. The region's external trade declined by 8.6 per cent in 2020. Latin America's imports were $904 billion (down from $1,006 billion in 2019) and exports were $935 billion in 2020, declining from $1,007 billion in 2019. There is potential for India to increase its exports to about $20 billion in the next five years if the Indian exporters and government intensify their export promotion seriously and systematically. At this time of austerity, Latin Americans look for affordable products from less-expensive sources. Although China fits this expectation, the Latin Americans seek to reduce their overdependence on China with which there is a growing trust deficit especially after the coronavirus, which originated from Wuhan.

Indian Ports need to release boxes to clear congestion, feel experts MUMBAI/CHENNAI: A continuing crunch in the container industry due to the Covid-19 pandemic aggravated by the Suez Canal crisis and the Yantian Port congestion in South China has led to heavy congestion at Indian ports. The Federation of India’s Export Organisation (FIEO) has highlighted there is an immediate need of releasing close to 50,000 containers held up at different Indian ports. Amrish Chauhan, the MD of Fourstar Worldwide Services Company, a custom clearing and forwarding broker in India, who pointed out that the main reason for containers stuck at major ports is high demurrage and detention charge. “The containers are stuck at various ports in India and the buyers have requested for a waiver of demurrage at the destination ports which have spiked,” he said. At least 55% of the container fleet is
stuck at various ports or on water as against a normal average of approximately 30% which has led to a shortage of containers across the world, according to data provided by a Trade Body recently. The availability of boxes in India and across Asia was triggered by congestion at transshipment ports like Colombo and Singapore, in major ports of China and Europe and key gateway ports on the west coast of America. With everything transpiring in the global container industry, India channeled its focus on manufacturing its own containers to suffice at least the domestic demand. The non-availability of containers has heavily impacted the exports and profitability of exporters. The regular bookings have been put on hold due to demand-supply mismatch. The major concern has now become the off the
roof freight rates. “Freights are high because there’s a shortage of containers, vessels and in many cases, port capacity. For a supply chain to work, all these three need to work. Harder problem to solve is ports and vessel space, ships are not something you can produce overnight”, said told Vinay Paulose, Director at VS&B Containers Group, a Chennai-based container leasing company “Most countries try and have their own shipping line for extraordinary times like a pandemic, supply chain issue or a war, it would be good if our trade is not reliant entirely on other countries”, added Paulose. Shipping costs have been on the rise given the growing exports, resulting in container shortages and soaring freight rates. Average Asia-US East Coast container freight rates on short-term contracts are up 56% from year-ago levels.
Warehouse leasing drops in Ahmedabad : Knight Frank India AHMEDABAD: Warehouse leasing in Ahmedabad took a beating in fiscal 2021 due to the pandemic-induced slowdown and the high base of financial year 2020. The transactions, however, witnessed a surge in Surat, Vadodara and Vapi on the back of demand from third party logistics (3PL) companies, and e-commerce and industrial players. Wa r e h o u s e s p a c e l e a s i n g i n Ahmedabad dropped by 42% to 30 lakh square feet (sq ft) in fiscal 2020-21 from 51 lakh sq ft in 2019-20. The details were part of India Warehousing Report 2021, released on Tuesday by Knight Frank India, a real estate consultant. The drop in warehousing transactions in Ahmedabad was largely due to the economic stress caused by the pandemic. “It is to be noted that the decline comes against a very high base of fiscal 2020 which was whipped up by the large space take up by the e-commerce and 3PL segments,” the report said. Meanwhile,
warehousing rentals in Ahmedabad corrected by 2-4%. On the contrary, cities such as Surat, Vapi and Vadodara saw an increase in warehousing leasing during the year. Riding on the demand from third party logistics companies and ecommerce players, transactions in Surat’s warehousing market jumped by 80% to 8.27 lakh sq ft. “Third party logistics garnered 50% share of transactions followed by ecommerce at 25%. The rents have largely been stable due to the rise in demand from these segments,” the report added. In the case of Vapi, warehouse leasing volumes galloped by 296% to 6.34 lakh sq ft. About 38% of the leasing demand was from industrial segments which included various kinds of light to heavy manufacturing activities. And 62% was from the warehousing segment, which is generally used for storage. Warehousing in Vapi is largely fragmented. Small clusters are in and
around the city and the supply is shared between Vapi, Daman and Silvassa. For Vadodara, warehousing space leasing grew by 2.5% to 4.51 lakh sq ft in FY21 from 4.40 lakh sq ft in FY20. Companies in other sectors (all manufacturing fields except FMCG, such as automobile, electronics and pharmaceuticals) garnered a 77% share of the transactions. This was followed by 3PL and e-commerce. For all four cities put together, the total warehouse leasing in Gujarat was recorded at 48 lakh sq ft, the report added. “Gujarat’s warehousing market during the pandemic has flipped, with established centres not performing to their full potential, primarily because of the economic slowdown caused by the pandemic,” said Balbirsingh Khalsa, national director, industrial & logistics, Knight Frank India. Khalsa added: “Other markets performed better due to the renewed demand from the ecommerce and 3PL segments.”
European Union plans to levy carbon border tax on imports from India B R U S S E L S : R e c e n t l y, I n d i a n environment minister Prakash Javadekar opposed the European Union’s (EU) plan to levy an additional ‘carbon border tax’ on imports from countries such as India that do not have strict norms for controlling industrial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Earlier, on March 10, 2021, the EU Parliament had adopted a resolution to implement a ‘Carbon Border Adjusted Mechanism’ (CBAM), a June 2021 draft regulation pertaining to which proposed that goods entering the EU would be taxed at the borders. Such a tax would promote “lowcarbon, resource-efficient manufacturing”, the resolution says. The UK and the US are also considering such proposals. The BASIC (Brazil, South Africa, India and China) countries’ grouping had opposed the EU’s proposal in a jointstatement in April, terming it “discriminatory ” and against the principles of equity and ‘common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities’ (CBDR-RC). These principles acknowledge that richer countries have a responsibility of providing financial and technological assistance to developing and vulnerable countries to fight climate change.
Why does the EU want a carbon tax? For two reasons: its environmental goals and its industries’ global competitiveness, experts tell us. Recently, the EU declared it would cut its carbon emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. EU’s greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by 24% compared to 1990 levels. But imports from emissions–which contribute 20% of the EU’s carbon dioxide emissions–are increasing, the resolution said. Such a carbon tax would incentivise other countries to reduce GHG emissions and further shrink the EU’s carbon footprint. Second, the 27 EU member states have much stricter laws to control GHG emissions. It has an ‘Emissions Trading System’ that caps how much GHG individual industrial units can emit; those that fail to cap their emissions can buy ‘allowances’ from those who have made deeper cuts. This makes operating within the EU expensive for certain businesses, which, the EU authorities fear, might prefer to relocate to countries that have more relaxed or no emission limits. This is known as ‘carbon leakage’ and it increases the total emissions in the world.
How does this impact India? As India’s third largest trading partner, the EU accounted for 62.8 billion ($74.5 billion) worth of trade in goods in 2020, or 11.1% of India’s total global trade. India’s exports to the EU were worth $41.36 billion in 2020-21, as per data from the commerce ministry. The EU’s March resolution stated that to begin with, by 2023, the CBAM would cover energy-intensive sectors such as cement, steel, aluminium, oil refinery, paper, glass, chemicals as well as the power sector. By increasing the prices of Indianmade goods in the EU, this tax would make Indian goods less attractive for buyers and could shrink demand. The tax “would create serious near-term challenges for companies with a large greenhouse gas footprint–and a new source of disruption to a global trading system already roiled by tariff wars, renegotiated treaties, and rising protectionism”, the consultancy BCG said in an analysis on June 30, 2020. BCG estimated, for example, that a levy of $30 per metric ton of CO2 emissions could reduce the profit pool for foreign producers by about 20% if the price for crude oil remained at $30-40 per barrel.

North Central Railway records highest ever growth in freight revenue in Q1 NEW DELHI: Despite the ongoing COVID -19 situation, North Central Railway (NCR) recorded the highest ever growth in loading and collection of freight revenue during the first quarter of the current financial year 2021-22. Briefing media persons, VK Tripathi, General Manager (GM), NCR said, “This year NCR has achieved the best ever loading done in the first quarter of any financial year. During April-June 2021-22, the originating loading has been 4.32 MT as compared to 3.24 MT in the corresponding period of last year thereby an increase of 33.3 per cent over last year. The originating Goods earnings during April-June 2021-22 has been Rs 437.57 crore as against Rs 352.33 crore in last year, thereby an increase of 24.19 per cent over last year. There has been a significant increase in loading of containers, cement, POL and fly ash, etc.” The GM said that North Central
Railway, in tune with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on “Jaan Bhi, Jahaan Bhi” is committed for its best contributing to the growth of the nation’s economy and serving passengers to their satisfaction. He emphasised that during these days, Railways have observed due care to follow COVID protocols and ensure social distancing, sanitization and use of masks at all workplaces and work sites. As the unlocking process is continuing with the m o d e r a t i o n i n C OV I D , p a s s e n g e r movement is picking up and accordingly coaching services are being gradually resumed. Tripathi said that Zonal Railway is gradually restoring train services in close consultation with Railway Board. Approximately, 86 per cent of mail express trains have been resumed and unreserved passenger trains are also now being resumed gradually. In addition, six pairs of
NCR-owned Holiday/Summer Specials (82 trips) are also running to clear the extra rush of passengers. “We have achieved the best ever punctuality performance of mail/express trains with 93.12 per cent in the first quarter of the financial year 2021-2022,” he said. On infrastructural strengthening, Tripathi informed that in pursuance of Indian Railways’ mission of 100 per cent electrification, NCR is aggressively striving for electrification of its entire territory. He said that in Financial Year 2021-22, a total 517 Route Kilometer (RKM) and 917 Track Kilometer (TKM) routes are targeted for electrification in NCR and by the end of FY 2022-23. NCR will be completely electrified with nearly 8700 TKM Electrified Routes, for which various works have already been sanctioned by the Railway Board.
Xeneta Container Rates: increase slows, but still no relief in sight for Global Shippers OSLO: Long-term contracted ocean freight rates continued their ascent through June, although not with the dizzying trajectory witnessed in recent months. May’s 9% surge in prices eased back to a 2.3% gain in June. However, the latest figures, detailed in Xeneta’s Long-Term XSI® Public Indices, mean rates now stand a staggering 39.2% up year-on-year (having risen 37.7% in 2021 alone). Furthermore, notes Oslo-based Xeneta, there appears to be little relief on the horizon for a financially battered shipper community. Astronomical gains Xeneta crowd sources real-time rates data from global shippers and freight forwarders to paint a detailed analytical picture of the latest market developments. Insights from the team show a year that, so far, is like no other, with historical high rates built on a platform of strong demand, a lack of equipment and capacity, port congestion, and individual carrier firms and alliances that, it appears, are very much in the driving seat. “It can almost be difficult to keep a sense of perspective here,” comments Xeneta CEO Patrik Berglund. “Seen in the context of 2021, a 2.3% gain appears only moderate, but in any other month, in any other year, this is a very strong performance for the carriers. “We have witnessed truly astronomical increases, due to a very complex combination of factors – from the way coronavirus has both disrupted supply and driven demand, through to unforeseen events, such as the blockage of the Suez Canal. And all the time the carriers have managed routes and capacity to maintain a position of unparalleled strength in negotiations. It is, without doubt, a difficult time to be a shipper.” Widespread impact And, he notes, there’s little relief in sight. Carriers are making bold moves to increase their fleets, but, for the most part, these are long-term decisions rather than short-ter m capacity injections. For example, HMM has just announced the ordering of twelve 13,000 TEU vessels, for $1.57bn, which will take the capacity of the
Korean line past 1m slots, while HapagLloyd has ordered six 23,500 TEU ships, with delivery expected from 2024. In the meantime, the supply chain is buckling under the pressure. As Berglund explains: “Ports in the US are facing new levels of congestion, causing huge delays in shipments and inventory shortages for retailers. In fact, a recent survey by the National Retail Federation (NRF) found that 97% of members had been impacted by port and shipping delays, while President Biden has announced the creation of a Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force. And, looking further afield, let’s not forget Yantian and Shenzhen, which were hit by COVID a couple of weeks ago making it even more difficult to balance supply and demand.” Tough market “Of course, in a connected industry the ripple-effects of disruption are everywhere. In Europe, we hear of vessels from Asia being delayed by up to three weeks, while some carriers are now omitting selected port calls all together, much to the chagrin of shippers. 2M recently announced it would not be stopping at Rotterdam on its Asia-North Europe loops for the next seven weeks, with THE Alliance following suit. Maersk and MSC, meanwhile, are skipping Hamburg on their AE7/Condor loop for another four weeks due to ongoing congestion. “So, shippers are left with the unpalatable – some would argue unsustainable – combination of deteriorating reliability and climbing spot and contract rates. It’s exceptionally tough for shippers to navigate the market right now, as the delta between short and contract rates continues to grow. Carriers unquestionably have the upper hand and are in a strong position to exploit the budgets of big volume shippers. “We should all brace ourselves for the carriers’ and forwarders’ Q2 financials. It will be a joyful moment for the sellers, but painful for the rest of the market. However, it’s universally positive that it gives the seller community an opportunity to invest those gains in more sustainable, eco-
friendly infrastructure. We hope they seize it.” Regional analysis The XSI® intelligence, gleaned from over 280 million data points, with more than 160,000 port-to-port pairings, demonstrates a month of overall rates increases, with one or two regional exceptions. In Europe, imports on the XSI ® declined for the first time in seven months, with a 4.2% fall. However, the index remains a breathtaking 48.1% up year-on-year. Exports rose 1.9% and stand 18.1% higher than June 2020. The Far East import benchmark climbed by 1.5%, up 27.3% yearon-year, with exports also gaining, edging up a further 2% to an astonishing 67.8% above this time last year. It was a tale of two indices in the US, with imports surging 9.3% in June (36.9% up year-on-year), while exports fell 2%. This is the only index down against June 2020, with a drop of 2.1% (although it has risen 6.6% in 2021 so far). A question of control “It’ll be fascinating to see what comes next,” concludes Berglund. “The key question is how do shippers try and regain a sense of control? We’ve already seen the arrival of CULines, supported by purchasing association XSTAFF, as an alternative solution, and June saw the news that Home Depot in the US was making the audacious move of chartering its own vessel to secure a more stable, predictable supply chain. Not everyone is in a position to do this, of course, but it’s a very interesting development as shippers desperately seek some short-term relief. “The XSI® will keep us informed of whether it’s possible to achieve that in the months to come; helping steer negotiations and allowing users to get optimal value for their businesses.” Companies participating in Oslo-based Xeneta’s crowd-sourced ocean and air freight rate benchmarking and market analytics platform include names such as ABB, Electrolux, Continental, Unilever, Lenovo, Nestle, L’Oréal, Thyssenkrupp, Volvo Group and John Deere, amongst others.

ZIM and Seaspan announce New Long-Term Chartering Agreement for Ten 7,000 TEU LNG-Fueled Vessels HAIFA / LONDON: ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd., and Seaspan Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Atlas Corp., announced recently a new strategic agreement for the long-term charter with monetary value in excess of $1.5 billion, of ten 7,000 TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel container vessels, to serve across ZIM’s various global-niche trades. In addition, in February 2021, ZIM and Seaspan announced a long-term charter agreement for ten 15,000 TEU LNG-fueled vessels. Eli Glickman, ZIM President & CEO, stated: “We are very pleased to once again partner with Seaspan as we strategically enhance our operating fleet to further facilitate our long-term strategy. With this second long-term chartering agreement, we are securing access to our core fleet, while maintaining operational agility with respect to the total number of vessels we operate. Since going public, and further evidenced by this transaction, we remain committed to deploying capital prudently and enhancing shareholder value.”
Mr. Glickman continued, “Keeping with our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and preserving our oceans, we are investing in state-of-the-art ‘green’ vessels that use the cleanest technology currently available. We are proud that this transaction will further improve our carbon intensity standing among the global liners.” Bing Chen, Chairman, President and CEO of Seaspan, added: “We are very proud to further ZIM’s leading environmental initiatives with advanced designs, competitive pricing, and valuable deliveries. Together, our teams developed a creative and competitive solution by leveraging Seaspan’s decades of environmental expertise, newbuild experience, integrated platform, and trusted partnerships with shipyards. Our growing partnership and the twenty LNG-fueled newbuilds to date signify both ZIM’s and Seaspan’s commitment to carbon reduction and sustainable growth for our industry.” Clarksons Platou acted as financial and professional advisor to ZIM in connection with this transaction.
More than 1 mn TEU worth of Boxships have changed hands so far this year Cont’d. from Pg. 1
Charter rates are up 286% over the past 12 months and owners are increasingly being forced to accept onerous, multi-year contracts, hence the keenness to buy rather than charter by many liners. Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) and Wan Hai Lines have been the top two boxship buyers this year. The extraordinary buying spree of MSC has been charted regularly by Splash for many months. The Geneva-based line bought 53 ships of 185,590 TEUs in the first six months of this year, and in total has bought 72 units of 289,950 TEUs since it began snapping up tonnage in August 2020. The stunning increase in sales concluded in the opening six months also highlights shipping’s ability to asset play. “From the seller’s perspective, the current prices offer a great incentive to sell, highlighting the role of asset play in some shipowners’ models, as profits on ships being sold
these days can potentially cover the losses made by the ship over its lifetime,” commented Peter Sand, BIMCO’s Chief Shipping Analyst recently. By far the most traded ship so far this year have been feeder ships, of which 167 have been sold, a 165.1% increase from the first half of 2020, according to data from VesselsValue. Of the feeder ships which have disclosed prices, the average paid in June was $17.6m. This is more than four times the $4m average for deals going through in June 2020. It’s not just an appetite for record-breaking boxships that are keeping S&P brokers busy this year. Bulk carriers and tankers are also changing hands fast. As much as 8% of the global fleet will change hands this year according to new research from Clarkson Research Services. More than 85m dwt has changed hands in the first six months, more than double the long term trend.
