MUMBAI: Adani Group, India’s largest critical infrastructure developer, has released the Adani portfolioresultssnapshotcompendiumforFY23.

World Bank offers dim outlook for Global economy in face of higher interest rates

WASHINGTON: The global economy is likely slowing sharply this year, hobbled by high interest rates, the repercussions of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the lingering effectsofthecoronaviruspandemic.

That’s the latest outlook of the World Bank, a 189-country antipoverty agency, which estimates that the international economy will expandjust2.1%in2023aftergrowing 3.1%in2022.

Still, the bank’s latest Global Economic Prospects report, which it issued recently, marks an upgrade from its previous forecast in January. That estimate had envisioned worldwide growth of just 1.7% this year.

The Federal Reserve and other

major central banks have been aggressively raising interest rates to combat a resurgence of inflation, set off by a stronger-than-expected rebound from the pandemic recession, persistent supply shortages and energy and food price shockscausedbytheUkrainewar.

But the global economy has proved surprisingly resilient in the face of higher borrowing costs, and the World Bank predicts that growth willaccelerateto2.4%in2024.

The United States has continued to generate unexpectedly robust job gains — employers added 339,000 workers in May, far more than economists had forecast — even though the Fed has raised its benchmark rate 10 times in the past

15 months. In its report Tuesday, the World Bank upgraded its forecast for U.S. economic growth this year to 1.1%.

Though weak, that is more than doublethegrowththeWorldBankhad envisionedinJanuary.

The eurozone, which represents the 20 countries that share the euro currency, is expected to post collectivegrowthof0.4%thisyear.

That, too, marks a slight upgrade: In January, the World Bank had expected no growth at all for the eurozone this year. Europe, struggling with higher energy prices caused by the Ukraine war, enjoyed relief from a surprisingly warm winter, which reduced demand for heat.

HAMBURG: Global container shipping freight rates have reached unsustainable levels and must rebound, the chief executive of Germany’s Hapag Lloyd, the world’s number five operator by volume, said onTuesday.

“There are spot rates that are clearly below cost,” said CEO Rolf Habben Jansen in a call withjournalists.

“In the long run, that typically does not hold. Whenever everything

becomes cash negative, then people take the measures that need to be taken to settle rates slightly above cost.”

The Shanghai containerised freightindexbottomedoutearlyinthe secondquarterafterslippingtobelow $1,000 per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU)butisbarelymoving.

Transport expenses, meanwhile, have increased significantly, Habben Jansen said, citing a mix of inflation and hikes in fuel and

labourcosts,amongotherfactors.

The company’s transport expenses rose 3% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2023 to $1,324/TEU, aslideshowed.

Habben Jansen said he expected them to settle at $1,250-1,750/TEU in due course, but this would still be 25% abovepre-pandemiclevels.

The company in May upheld its 2023 full-year guidance with earnings beforeinterestandtaxes(EBIT)seen ina2-4billioneurosrange.

Seafood exporters demand expansion of aquaculture area

CHENNAI: The more than $8billion seafood industry has reiterated its demand to expand the area under aquaculture and to create an ecosystem where aquaculture will flourish in the country. Indian industry should get a level-playing field like Ecuador, which has forged aheadinshrimpculture,andVietnam and Thailand in terms of wild catch, said Seafood Exporters’ Association of India (SEAI) president Jagdish Fofandi.

He said Ecuador was well entrenched in the US shrimp market, while Indian wild-caught shrimp had been banned in the country over the pastfouryears.AbrahamTharakan,a seafood industry veteran, said Indian shrimp exports to the US used to be wortharound$250millioninthepast.

They were speaking on the sidelines of the two-day dialogue on fishery certification for achieving

sustainable development goals in India. The programme has the support and cooperation from SEAI, Sustainable Seafood Network of India, NITI Ayog, Marine StewardshipCouncil,andWWF.

Mr. Fofandi said the Indian seafood industry, despite handicaps including deceleration in the Japanese market, had crossed the $8 billion-markduring2022-23.Headded that the demand for surimi (fish paste) from India in the Japanese market had slumped precipitously. This has had a big impact as Japan accounted for the bulk of surimi exportsfromIndia.Japanisnolonger amajormarketforIndianseafood.

The seafood industry representatives also pointed out that a drop in catch had not been reflected in the market so far but called for expansion of area under shrimp aquaculture in the country.

Ecuador has done extremely well in the area, they said as they called for the creation of such a conducive ecosystem in India, which would createalevel-playingfield.

While the cultivation of Pacific whiteshrimpVannameihasnottaken off in Kerala despite the fact that around 60% of the shrimp processed in the State is accounted for by imports from Andhra Pradesh. The area under aquaculture in Gujarat has dropped considerably. South Gujarat, which dominates the aquaculture scene, has seen production dropping from around 90,000tonnesto30,000tonnes.

Blackstone bets big on India’s Warehousing, to grow Logistics portfolio to 100 million sq ft

MUMBAI: Global private equity major Blackstone Group is betting big on warehousing and logistics development in India owing to the rising consumption led by demographics, ecommerce penetrationandsupportingregulatory initiativesbytheGovernment.

The institutional investor is looking to expand its warehousing portfolio in the country by 2.5 times to 100 million sq ft from current 40millionsqftinthenext3-5years.

Blackstone will be developing the logistics portfolio further through its existing joint ventures, partnerships and will also be forging new alliances for the same, said a top executive of thefirm.

“India’s demographics and consumption pattern along with promising economic growth prospects certainly indicate a huge

opportunity for logistics, warehousing, and industrial space. The Government’s holistic approach to transform the logistics sector will ensure solid growth potential,” Asheesh Mohta, senior MD and head of real estate acquisitions in IndiaforBlackstone, said.

In April, Blackstone announced the final close of $30.4 billion for the largest ever real estate drawdown fund. A significant part of this fund is expected to flow into the logistics and data centres segment and geographically into Asia Pacific, especiallyIndia.

Blackstone has recently set up a separate India-dedicated platform, Horizon Industrial Parks, to house its 26 million sq ft logistics and warehousing assets and support its rapidly expanding logistics footprint acrossthecountry.

This platform is created through recent key acquisitions including Embassy Industrial Parks, TARC and Allcargo Logistics with over half a billion-dollar investments. The platform will act as the holding company for Blackstone’s all logistics and industrial parks-related assets andalliances.

The firm’s logistics portfolio across major Indian cities including Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Pune and Hyderabad is anchored by tenants in fast-growing sectors such as ecommerce,retail,autoandlogistics.

Logistics is one of the biggest asset classes for Blackstone globally as it is the largest owner of warehousing spaces. It has so far invested over $55 billion in this segment and owns more than 575 million sq ft of warehousing space worldover.

Private companies seek sops to build Great Nicobar Port

NEW DELHI: Private sector playershavesoughtaslewofincentives to set up the roughly Rs. 48,000 crore greenfield International Container Transshipment Port in Galathea Bay, at Great Nicobar Island. The incentives sought include Hybrid Annuity public private partnership (PPP) model under which the central government through its arms hold 70% stake, while the private player gets 30% during the constructionstage.

“Giventhedueconsiderationofhigh investments and strategic nature of the project, it is appropriate to have the construction of marine works by authority which will increase the cash flow to concessioner as well as provide them with construction support,”

suggestions from the private sector representativessaid.

This project is significant for the country as nearly 75% of India’s transshipped cargo is handled at ports outside India. Colombo, Singapore, and Klang handle more than 85% of this cargowithColomboPortalonehandling 45 percent. According to official estimates, Indian ports can save $200220 million each year on transshipment cargo if the Galathea projects comes about.

InJanuary2023,theCentre,through the Shyama Prasad Mookherjee Port, Kolkata, in association with Andaman and Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corporation Limited, invited Expression of Interest to

develop the International Container Transshipment Port in Galathea Bay. Ten participants responded and took part in consultations. The participants wereAdaniPortsandSpecialEconomic Zone, JSW Infra, Royal Boskalis Westminster, Rail Vikas Nigam, Container Corporation of India and EssarPorts,amongothers.

According to the participants, the governmentshouldbereadytobearthe costofconstructionwhileoperationisto be left to the concessionaire. Another demand is to have a Right of First Refusal for development of any other terminal for handing of similar cargo or other cargo at the proposed port. A tax holiday has also been sought to lower theporttariff.

India to remain fastest-growing major economy: World Bank

NEW DELHI: India will remain the fastest-growing major economy in terms of both aggregate and per capita GDP despite the slowdown in growth, the World Bank said recently.

"Growth is projected to pick up slightly through 2025-26 as inflation

moves back toward the midpoint of the tolerance range and reforms payoff,"WorldBanksaid.

The World Bank kept its April forecasts unchanged, projecting India's growth for FY24 at 6.3%, increasing to 6.4% in FY25. For FY26, it has projected a growth of 6.5%.

It said India will lift the growth prospectsoftheSouthAsianregion.

"Unexpected resilience in private consumption and investment, and robust growth in the services sector in India, underlie an upward revision to growthin2023,"saidthereport.

Multipurpose Terminal Pvt Ltd, an equal joint venture between J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Ltd and Indian Potash Ltd, has tied up funds from AxisBanktoachievefinancialclosure for mechanising and operating a multi-purpose cargo berth for 30 years at State-owned VisakhapatnamPort.

The J M Baxi Ports & LogisticsIndian Potash team placed the highestroyaltyofRs55.44atonforthe project to emerge the successful bidder on a tender issued by VisakhapatnamPortAuthority.

Port tenders at major ports (owned by the Centre) are decided on thebasisofroyaltyperton–theentity willing to share the highest royalty per ton of cargo handled at the berth with the port authority wins the deal for30years.

The royalty payable will rise annually in tandem with the increase in wholesale price index (WPI), a measure of costs. The terminal operator will be free to set market rates under the new Major Port Authorities Act and the model

concessionagreement(MCA).

Indian Potash Ltd – more than 70 percent owned by fertiliser co-operatives- is India’s biggest fertiliser importer and the second largest buyer of fertilisers in the global market. Indian Potash imports fertilisersthroughalltheIndianports and it is the only company in India which handles fertilisers throughout theyearatallports.

This will be the fourth cargo handling contract to be developed by J M Baxi Ports & Logistics at a Stateowned major port in recent times.

Mumbai-based J M Baxi Ports & Logistics, India’s third most valued logistics company, secured contracts lastyeartoruncontainerterminalsat Jawaharlal Nehru Port and V O Chidambaranar Port (formerly Tuticorin Port) and the shallow

water/coastalberthsatJNPort.

The contract at Visakhapatnam Port involves mechanising the easterncoastport’sEastQuayberth7 (EQ7) for handling dry bulk cargo including fertilisers with private funds worth Rs201 crores. Whenmechanised,theEQ7berthwill have a capacity to handle 3.61 million tonnes(mt)ofcargoayear.

The project is part of the national monetisation pipeline (NMP) of the government wherein operational infrastructure assets including port terminals will be privatised through the public-private-partnership (PPP)route.

J M Baxi Ports & Logistics separately runs a 1.5 million twentyfoot equivalent units (TEUs) capacity container terminal at VisakhapatnamPort.

IMD tells Gujarat Ports to hoist warning signal amid possible cyclonic storm in Arabian Sea

GANDHINAGAR: All ports in Gujarat have been asked to hoist a warning signal as a depression formed in the Arabian Sea is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) saidrecently.

Fishermen have been told not to venture into the deep sea due to the weatherphenomenon,itsaid.

“Depression has formed over Southeast Arabian Sea and lay centered at 0530 hours IST of today, 06thJune,2023nearlatitude11.3Nand longitude 66.0E, about 920 km westsouthwest of Goa, 1120 km southsouthwestofMumbai,1160kmsouthof

Porbandar and 1520 km south of Karachi,”theIMDsaidinastatement.

“It is likely to move nearly northwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 24 hours over East-central Arabian Sea & adjoining southeast Arabian Sea duringnext24hours,”itsaid.

The weather agency has told that signal “Distant Cautionary-1 (DC-1)” behoistedatalltheportsofNorthand SouthGujaratcoasts.

According to the IMD portal, DC-I ishoistedataportwhenthe(weather) system out at sea is a depression or a deep depression and while the local weather at the port itself is not likely to be affected immediately, ships

leaving the port may run into danger duringtheirvoyage.

“We have issued a warning to fishermen not to venture into the sea. This warning is for north Gujarat ports. If fishermen are fishing in the deep sea (North or South Gujarat), they should immediately return,” Ahmedabad Met Director Manorama Mohantytoldreporters.

The department has not predicted thatthecyclonicstorm,whichislikely tointensifyintoaveryseverecyclonic storm, will make landfall on the Gujaratcoastasofnow.

However, it can cause rains in coastalareasandleadtoanincreased windspeed,IMDsaid.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges : Gateway²Britain, an innovative Digital application launched

ANTWERP: Flanders, the northern region of Belgium,hasannouncedGateway²Britain,aninnovative digital application that will bring visibility and transparency for trading with Flanders into one place. It is being delivered by a partnership between Port of Antwerp-Bruges, VLAIO (Flemish Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship), Flanders Investment & Trade and Deloitte (technical delivery partner). Their aim is to make trade between Flanders andBritainasfrictionlessaspossible.

Traders are likely to be able to validate an initial version of Gateway²Britain by the end of this year. The application will allow traders to fill out just one dataset online, which is then automatically shared with all the relevantsupplychain&logisticspartners.

Mawani, GACA, and ZATCA sign MoU to boost Air-Sea connectivity

RIYADH: The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), and Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) have recently inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance air-sea logistics connectivity and ensure a seamlessflowofgoodsacrosstheKingdom.

The agreement was signed at the GACA HQ in Riyadh by its EVP for Economic Policies and Logistics Services, Mr.AwadAlSulami,aswellasEng.Abdullah Al-Funtukh, ZATCA’s Vice Governor for Trade Facilitation and Customer Experience Sector, and Mr. Abdullah AlMunif, Vice President for CommercialBusinessatMawani.
