One District One Product (ODOP) mission of Centre takes a giant technology boost NEW DELHI: West Jaintia Hills recently witnessed the first-of-its-kind Fly-Off Event to demonstrate the use of novel and innovative Drone/UAV technology for payload delivery, that could serve as a model of solving the 1st mile connectivity issues for Lakadong Turmeric farmers from the hinterland. L akadong Tur meric has been identified under The One District, One Product (ODOP) Initiative under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, as a product with excellent potential for growth and export for West Jaintia Hills. ODOP partnered with AGNIi Mission, one of the nine technology
missions under the Prime Minister's Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council to identify Indian innovative technologies that can play a transformative role in the end-to-end processing of Lakadong Turmeric, starting with leveraging payload drones (UAVs) to transport the turmeric in large quantities. Addressing the gathering at the event, Ms. Sumita Dawra, Additional Secretary, DPIIT said that this event was a first step towards showcasing the innovative solutions that can propel 1st mile connectivity while ushering in Industrial Revolution 4.0. It may be noted that the Lakadong Turmeric from West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, one of the world’s finest
turmeric varieties with the highest curcumin content of 7-9% (in comparison to 3% or less in other varieties), is fast becoming a game changer in the economy of the district. The State of Meghalaya has applied for a Geographical Indication tag for Lakadong turmeric. The percentage of curcumin and oleoresin content in turmeric determines the demand by the industry along with the price. India is the largest producer and exporter of tur meric (APEDA , 2019). India exported US$ 236.5 million worth of turmeric in 2018 from US$ 182.53 million in 2017. Turmeric is a positive crop; it improves health and is not water guzzling.
Highway construction speed to be enhanced to meet next scal target: Road Transport Secretary NEW DELHI: Terming the recent budget a "development- oriented" exercise, Union Road Transport and Highways Secretary Giridhar Aramane recently said the pace of road construction will be further increased to achieve the target of expansion of national highways in the next fiscal. In the ongoing fiscal so far, he said, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) have so far constructed
7,500 km of national highways, and in the remaining two months, at least 2,500 km of highway construction is expected. Aramane recently said, "The Budget for 2022-2 is development oriented. The large focus on infrastructure development is going to help the country reap the dividends in the coming decades." Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the Budget for 2022-23 had said national highways will be expanded by 25,000 kilometres (km) during 2022-23.
The Secretary said the target of construction of 25,000 km of national highways in the next fiscal year will be met under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, under which the government will have to provide connectivity to all the economic nodes in the country. "We will increase the pace of highways construction. Existing ones will be made into bigger ones, stronger ones; and new ones to reach these economic nodes. So, together, it will be 25,000 km," he explained.
DGTR for imposing countervailing duty on copper tubes, pipes from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam NEW DELHI: The Commerce Ministry has recommended the imposition of countervailing duty on copper tubes and pipes from Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam for five years, a move aimed at guarding domestic players against imports that are subsidised by these countries. The ministry's investigation arm Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) in its findings after a probe has stated that the investigation was initiated on a suo-motu basis and was notified to all interested parties.
The DGTR added that adequate opportunity was given to the domestic industry, embassies of these countries, exporters, importers and other interested parties to provide positive information on the aspect of subsidisation, injury and causal link. "Having initiated and conducted an investigation into subsidisation, injury and causal link...the authority is of the view that imposition of countervailing duty is necessary," the DGTR has said in a notification.
The recommended duty ranges between 2.3 per cent of CIF (cost, insurance, freight) value to 14.76 per cent of CIF value. "The authority recommends imposition of definitive countervailing duty...for a period of five years," it added. Now, the finance ministry would take the final call on the imposition of the duty. The DGTR has concluded that the volume of imports has increased in absolute terms as well in relation to consumption in India.

PM Gati Shakti Master Plan to be implemented from April 1st NEW DELHI: The implementation framework for PM GatiShakti national master plan is taking its final shape at a faster pace and after April 1 this year, every infrastructure project is expected to route through the network planning group (NPG) constituted under this initiative, a top government official said recently. The PM GatiShakti plan was announced last year with an aim to break departmental silos and bring in more holistic and integrated planning and execution of projects with a view to address the issues of multi-modal and last-mile connectivities. This will help in bringing down the logistics cost, Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Cont’d. Pg. 4 Trade (DPIIT) Anurag Jain said.

So the structure is there,” he said. The secretary added that the department has conducted one round of training with the departments of the government of India and hold regional conferences across the states, barring the North-East, where it would happen soon. “So we are on track. We have asked states to put in their layers (on the PM GatiShakti national master plan portal). So we are targeting to get all the layers (like land records) of the states also on the portal by March 31. What we intend to do is that after April
1, 2022, every project which is more than Rs. 500 crore and is an infrastructure project will be routed through this (NPG),” Mr Jain said. The process, the secretary informed, would help in making the plan more efficient and effective. NPG consists of heads of the network planning wing of respective infrastructure ministries and it will assist the EGOS, which is headed by the cabinet secretary. EGOS consists of secretaries of 18 ministries as members and Head of Logistics Division, under the DPIIT, as member convenor. NPG will clear the projects as all infrastructure projects would have to come here. "Instead of departments making the DPR (detailed project reports)
directly, at the planning stage, they will approach the NPG," he said after its clearance, the project would follow the normal procedure of approval by the Finance Ministry of the Cabinet, depending upon the projects. E x p l a i n i n g i t f u r t h e r, t h e secretary said that suppose railway is planning a project on a specified route, so by putting the relevant information on the portal before finalising the DPR, railways can see whether the proposed track is crossing through public land or private property or forest or canal or highways. The Secretary informed that they have pursued all the states to put information on the portal as soon as possible, and digitised land records will really help in this.
South Central Railway sees 27% hike in freight loading of all commodities HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway witnessed an increase in Freight loading of all commodities. In the current financial year up to January 2022 it saw a 27 percent increase in freight loading when compared to the previous financial year. With this, from April 2021 to January 2022, the zone recorded 96.36 million tonnes of total freight loading as compared to 75.92 million tonnes
during the same period in the previous financial year. As per the release the loading trends of various commodities in January 2022 appear as follows - 123 percent growth in loading of food grains (0.872 MT in January 2022 vs 0.391 MT in January 2021), 56 % growth in loading of container traffic (0.215 MT in January 2022 vs 0138 MT in 2021). The freight loading of 5 MTs
coal, 0.47 MTs fertilisers and 3.32 MTs cement are also on higher side in January 2022, when compared with the same period in the previous year. All this has resulted in the total Freight Loading of the Zone increasing by 27 percent during April 2021-January 2022 by recording 96.36 MTs, compared to 75.92 MTs during the same period in the previous financial year.

Drewry: World Container Index 79% higher than same week of 2021 LONDON: Drewry’s composite World Container Index decreased marginally by 0.5% to $9,376.70 per 40ft container last week. Drewry’s detailed assessment for Thursday, 3 February 2022 • The composite index decreased marginally by 0.5% this week, but, remains 79% higher than a year ago. • The average composite index of the WCI, assessed by Drewry for year-to-date, is $9,490 per 40ft container, which is $6,537 higher than the five-year average of $2,953 per 40ft container. • Drewry’s World Container Index composite index decreased marginally by 0.5% to $9,376.70 per 40ft container, but is 79% higher than the same week in 2021. Freight rates on Rotterdam – New York grew 2% or $140 to reach $6,455 per feu. Similarly, rates on New York – Rotterdam gained 3% to reach $1,276 per 40ft box. However, rates on Shanghai – Los Angeles and Shanghai – New York fell 1% each to $10,571 and $13,127 per 40ft container respectively. Need to reduce logistics costs to boost development in Maharashtra : Nitin Gadkari Cont’d. from Pg. 3
Speaking at a conference on "Development of Maharashtra from a New Budgetary Perspective" organized by Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA) in Mumbai, on February 5, 2022, the Minister said: “Logistics costs are 12 percent in the US, 12 percent in European countries and 8 to 10 percent in China whereas in India, it is around 14 to 16 percent. We need to build appropriate infrastructure to reduce logistics costs, a major issue faced by Indian industry”. Notably, the Union Budget 2022-23, presented by the Union Finance Minister in Parliament earlier this week, lays significant focus on bringing down logistics costs as part of the ambitious PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. The Plan aims to do this by enabling development of cargo terminals, setting up Multi Modal Logistics Parks and increasing coverage of National Highways. The Transport Minister informed that the government has planned to construct logistics parks worth Rs. 2 lakh crores across the country, and that Maharashtra also should reap the benefit from this. “The country now has the facility to land aircraft on 20 highways. Dry ports have begun functioning in Wardha district and new dry ports will be started in Solapur, Sangli and Nashik. These projects include storage, pre-cooling plants and production processing facilities. Today, oranges, yarn and fabric can be transported directly to Haldia from Nagpur and further to Bangladesh.” The Union Minister also pitched for Ethanol as a better
alternative to petrol and diesel. “Ethanol is ten times better a fuel than petrol or diesel, and is c h e a p e r a n d environment-friendly. There are three ethanol pumps already operating in Pune. Greater use of ethanol as a fuel will help us in controlling pollution to a large extent.” Addressing the gathering, Union Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Bhagwat K arad said that the Government of India has provided Rs 2.5 lakh crore to MSMEs in order to help the industry sail through the COVID-19 pandemic. The government provided assistance to more than 95 lakh firms, thereby protecting jobs of more than 5 crore people. The Minister said that Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has been announced for 14 sectors and that the PLI scheme has received tremendous response. The government has also decided to launch 75 digital banks for promotion of international trade, he added. On the occasion, Union Minister Shri Gadkari handed over the charge of the Chamber to the newly elected President of MCCIA, Shri Lalit Gandhi and his team.
