APM Terminals CEO Keith Svendsen: Looking ahead to 2025

Svendsen said the achievements harnessed by APM Terminals this year in decarbonisation, efficiency and growth are down to “a unique blend of operational excellence, terminal modernisation and technology uptake”. All of these equate to better connections, improved planning and reduced emissions.
World-leading Terminals
The company’s efficiency measures have also been validated by independent analysis, with the Container Port Performance Index — published by the World Bank — showing the company operating in six of the world's 10 most efficient container ports. Said Svendsen: “the achievements we have gained are not only down to our own efforts; recognition also belongs to the collaboration with customers and partners to become even more efficient, reliable and responsible.”
Examples of collaboration include the built-in flexibility and agility that help customers be more resilient and sustainable. By capitalising on the use of low emissions-generating rail networks for hinterland connections in Gothenburg (Sweden), Mobile (Alabama, US) and Pipavav (India), we’ve helped keep roads clear and supply chains running smoothly In Port of Salalah (Oman), a multi-modal service was launched to provide customers with a solution to re-route around the Cape of Good Hope — demonstrating proactivity and flexibility in meeting changing customer needs.
Collaborative solutions
Looking ahead to 2025, Svendsen predicts that customers will continue to rework supply chains and that proactivity will continue to be a primary focus for the company. “Co-creating solutions will remain key,” he said. “With the largest orderbook ever across carriers in terms of TEU, many of our customers are looking to modernise their fleets to remain competitive.
APM Terminals has spent recent years upgrading our own portfolio to ensure that we can be agile in this shifting landscape — ready to serve all customers and vessels.”
Preparations are evident — and already in place — through infrastructure upgrades in Mumbai (India), Onne (Nigeria), Pier 400 (Los Angeles, US) and in the company’s flagship terminal in the Netherlands, Maasvlakte II, where APM Terminals will see the full implementation of doubled capacity by 2027.
This all took place as five terminals increased productivity by nearly 100% since 2016 in readiness for the Gemini Cooperation — a string of hubs from Asia to Europe. Learnings from network roll out at these terminals will be shared throughout the APM Terminals network to benefit all customers in 2025 and beyond.
Terminal company of choice
Speaking on the ‘beyond 2025’ topic, Svendsen points to the continued trust invested in APM Terminals by governments, port authorities and communities. “As a partner of choice, we have extended our concession for the Aqaba Container Terminal in Jordan until 2046. In Brazil, we secured a 20-year extension for the Port of Santos — which boosts capacity by 40% and creates significant job opportunities within the region. These contract renewals tell us that we are on the right path — not only in terms of our own business ambitions, but for sustainable economic growth. Growth which benefits people, entire communities, entire countries,” he says.
A vision of the future
APM Terminals’ newest locations in Suape (Brazil) and Rijeka (Croatia) and its joint project in Haiphong, Vietnam are, according to Svendsen, a sign of things to come, as was the celebration in December in Barcelona of the first arrival of battery-powered electric straddle carriers part of the terminal’s $60 mln global electrification pilot.

States must prioritise State-Specific Logistics Policies : Report

According to the report, the logistics sector plays a vital role in boosting the economic efficiency of India and its constituent States and UTs. To meet their goals, the report recommended that States and UTs focus on creating logistics policies tailored to their specific needs, with clear timelines for implementation.
The report also called for establishing robust institutional frameworks to ensure coordinated execution and adopting ITenabled solutions such as real-time cargo tracking and automated processes to streamline operations. Workforce skill development and incentivising green logistics practices were also highlighted as urgent areas requiring attention.
The report suggested fast-tracking initiatives in these areas to address capacity gaps. States and UTs should aim to set measurable goals with well-defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and timelines for reducing logistics costs, increasing the share of rail freight, and promoting the adoption of electric vehicles (Evs). The report encourages leveraging digital platforms like the Unified Logistics
Interface Platform (ULIP) to enable seamless data sharing and improve coordination among stakeholders.
The report said “The promotion of multi-modal transport systems, backed by strategic investments in infrastructure and technology, must be aligned with measurable outcomes to reduce logistics costs and environmental impact”. Simplifying regulatory frameworks, allocating dedicated funds, and adopting real-time monitoring tools are key measures to overcome implementation challenges. Additionally, the report added that States and UTs focus on regional customisation efforts to maximise benefits. Coastal States should prioritise port modernisation and export-import (EXIM) trade, while North-Eastern States should work on enhancing cross-border connectivity. Landlocked States should focus on developing
By implementing these actionable steps, the report envisions a transition toward a more efficient, sustainable, and globally competitive logistics ecosystem. It stresses that achieving these goals will not only benefit individual States and UTs but also contribute to India’s overall growth and competitiveness in the global market.
SEZ units, EOUs seek extension of scheme refunding input duties on exports
NEW DELHI: SEZ units and EOUs (export-oriented units), excluded from the popular Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) scheme from January 1, 2025, have asked the government to extend to them the benefit till September 30, at par with export units in the country operating from outside the zones (domestic tariff area). In case of budget constraints, differentiation could be done based on products, per their submission.
“There is no justification for treating exports from EOUs and SEZs differently from the exports from DTA The RoDTEP Committee has already fixed different RoDTEP rates for exports from SEZs and EOUs as compared to exports from DTA If there is a budget constraint, RoDTEP may be limited to certain sectors/products, and exports of those products from all, whether DTA, SEZs or EOUs, should be allowed till a particular period,” Alok Chaturvedi, DG, Export Promotion CouncilforEOUsandSEZs(EPCES), said
The RoDTEP scheme, announced in January 2021, refunds embedded duties and taxes, such as VAT on fuel used in transportation, mandi tax and duty on electricity used during manufacturing of the exported items. The RoDTEP rates for various products are calculated by a RoDTEP committee that meticulously examines submissions on embedded taxes made by the industry.
Units in SEZs and EOUs and Advance Authorisation holders were included in the scheme in March 2024 but have been excluded from January 1, 2025, per a notification issued by the DGFT in September 2024. The DGFT notification
extended the RoDTEP scheme, which was to lapse for all on September 30, 2024, only till December 31, 2024 for SEZs, EOUS and AA holders while for exporters in the DTA, the scheme was extended till September 30, 2025.
“There appears to be no justification for denying the benefits to one set of exporters (SEZ/EOU/AA holders) vis-a-vis another set of exporters (DTA exporters),” according to a letter by the EPCES to Expenditure Secretary Manoj Govil last week. If there are budget constraints, product categories/sectors may be reduced rather than one small set of exporters exporting the same product being put to a disadvantage vis-à- vis other larger set of exporters of the same product, it said.
“ it may be appreciated there is only a limited requirement of budget for exports from SEZs /EOUS (15 per cent of the total) and hence it is requested that the RoDTEP scheme may kindly be extended till September 30, 2025, for exports from AA/EOU/SEZ Units as well on the pattern of exports from DTA units,” the letter pointed out.
Alter natively, in case of budget constraints, all exporters, whether from DTA or SEZ/EOU/AA holders be covered only till March 31 2025 (end of FY25) and then a separate decision may be taken for all categories of exporters for a further period depending upon the availability of budget allocation, it added.
In FY23, the scheme supported $450 billion worth of exports at the cost of Rs. 13,020 crore. In 2021-22, an outlay of Rs. 12,100 crore was spent on exports worth $421 billion.
Bullet train will soon be operational: PM
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently said the first bullet train would soon be operational. He also virtually inaugurated several railway projects.
According to an official statement, PM Modi launched the new Jammu Railway Division, Rayagada Railway Division Building of East Coast Railway and the Charlapalli New Terminal Station in Telangana.

FDI in India growing rapidly : Piyush Goyal
NEW DELHI : FDI inflows into the country are surging, with investors from the Middle East, Japan, European Union, and the U.S. recognising India’s status as a top investment destination, driving rapid economic growth and generating millions of new jobs, Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal has said.
He said that global investors are showing keen interest in India as the country offers several advantages such as strong domestic market, skilled and talented workforce and rule of law
“I can clearly see FDI (foreign direct investment) in India once again growing rapidly and creating millions of jobs. Countries in the Middle East, EFTA region, Japan, and investors from the EU and the US are all realising that India continues to be the most preferred destination for FDI,” Goyal told PTI.
He added that India’s stable and predictable regulatory framework, coupled with a favourable business environment and progressive policies aimed at enhancing ease of doing business, is attracting an increasing number of investors from around the world.
“Last month I met a CEO of one of
the largest funds in the US, who is also the largest investor in India, and he shared with me that his investments in India over the last 10 years have been some of the best investments his funds have ever done,” he noted.
The US fund, Goyal said, informed him that they are investors in India for the last 20 years, but more than 80 per cent of their investments happened in the last few years. “The CEO told me that he will be coming to India to celebrate 20 years of investing in India by announcing a further tranche of investments in India,” he said.

India is averaging over USD 4.5 billion in monthly foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows since January this year despite global uncertainties and challenges In the JanuarySeptember period this year, FDI into the country rose by about 42 per cent to USD 42.13 billion. The inflow was at USD 29.73 billion in the year-ago period.
The inflows during April-Sept 202425 grew by 45 per cent to USD 29.79 billion against USD 20.48 billion in the
same period previous fiscal. Total FDI in 2023-24 was a healthy USD 71.28 billion. The key sectors attracting the maximum of these inflows include the services segment, computer software and hardware, telecommunications, trading, construction development, a u t o m o b i l e , c h e m i c a l s , a n d pharmaceuticals.

Bangladesh political crisis raises global enquiries for Indian exporters of garments
DHAKA : The Bangladesh political crisis has started resulting in more enquiries for Indian apparel exporters from leading global brands like Tesco, Decathlon, JCPenney, GAP and Walmart and these could convert into higher exports in early 2025, said industry sources.
However, to capture the market share and seize opportunities arising from supply chain reorientation due to Bangladesh’s challenges and also US President-elect Donald Trump’s tariff threat to China, the government must step in with appropriate support, Mithileshwar Thakur, Secretary
General, Apparel Export Promotion Council, said.
“The support sought by the industry include introducing PLI 2.0 scheme on an urgent basis for all types of garments, irrespective of fibre, with reduced investment threshold, reviving technology upgradation scheme for the micro industry, continuation of the interest equalisation scheme for exporters and allowing flexibilities and more concessions in fabric and machinery imports for the textiles sector,” Thakur said.
The time for some policy push is appropriate as India’s export of
garments and textiles, after a lull of about two years, is experiencing a turnaround in the on-going fiscal in response to favourable factors such as higher demand from key markets, lower global inventories, and relatively low r a w m a t e r i a l p r i c e s , i n d u s t r y associations have asserted.
In April-November 2024 period, apparel exports from India posted a 11.39 per cent increase (year-on-year) to $9 85 billion while textile exports increased 3.9 per cent to $13.47 billion, per figures put together by the Confederation of Indian Textiles Industry (CITI).
Freight service under Jalvahak completes maiden journey with MV Trishul
NEW DELHI: The MV Trishul, accompanied by dumb barges Ajay and Dikshu, successfully completed its first journey under the Jalvahak scheme. This service transported 1,500 tonnes of cement from Kolkata to Pandu via the Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR). The Jalvahak scheme encourages long-distance cargo movement through National Waterways 1, 2, and 16, covering rivers Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Barak.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, highlighted the significance of this achievement. “The successful completion of MV Trishul’s maiden voyage marks a significant milestone for India’s inland waterways and the Jalvahak scheme,” he stated.
This initiative underscores the potential of waterways as an economical and eco-friendly transport mode The Jalvahak cargo policy provides incentives for transporting long-haul cargo via these national waterways The Fixed Day Scheduled Sailing Service operates vessels on the Kolkata-Patna-Varanasi-PatnaKolkata route on NW 1 and between Kolkata and Pandu on NW 2 through the IBPR. This service ensures timely delivery and builds stakeholder confidence in national waterways. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government is committed to transforming logistics with sustainable solutions.

Industrial & Warehousing sector leads with $2.5 Bn investments in 2024
NEW DELHI: In a landmark year for Indian real estate, institutional investments surged to USD 6.5 billion in 2024, reflecting a 22 per cent year-on-year growth—the highest inflow in five years. This growth underscores India’s rising prominence as a real estate investment destination, driven by robust domestic demand and growing foreign interest.
The industrial and warehousing segment emerged as the frontrunner, capturing a 39 per cent share of the total inflows with USD 2.5 billion in investments, marking a 190 per cent increase from 2023. This performance surpasses the office segment, which secured USD 2.3 billion (36 per cent share) in inflows. The growth in industrial assets aligns with India’s strengthening manufacturing base, enhanced logistics infrastructure, and rising global demand for Grade A warehousing facilities.
The year ended on a strong note, with Q4 2024 recording USD 1.9 billion in investments—129 per cent higher than the same period in 2023. Domestic players contributed 43 per cent of Q4 inflows, signalling growing confidence among local investors.
The segment-wise performance in 2024 showcased notable trends across various asset classes. Industrial and warehousing investments nearly tripled year-on-year, driven by large-scale deals and significant contributions from foreign investors, who accounted for over 80 per cent of the inflows.
The office segment, while experiencing a 23 per cent decline in annual inflows compared to 2023, saw a remarkable resurgence in Q4 2024 with investments of USD 825.3 million, marking a 509 per cent year-on-year
increase for the quarter Residential assets also demonstrated robust growth, with investments rising by 46 per cent to USD 1.1 billion, primarily fuelled by strong domestic interest.
In contrast, alternate assets witnessed a steep decline, with investments plummeting by 94 per cent to USD 39.5 million, signalling a significant shift in investor focus.
City-Wise Performance
Mumbai led the investment landscape, drawing USD 1.6 billion in inflows (24 per cent share) in 2024. The city’s office assets accounted for 58 per cent of its real estate investments, followed by industrial and warehousing assets at 20 per cent. Other key cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, and Delhi NCR secured 8-9 per cent shares each.
Badal Yagnik, CEO of Colliers India, remarked, “Private equity investments in Indian real estate saw remarkable momentum in 2024, driven by robust domestic growth and sustained global investor confidence The industrial and warehousing segment’s stellar performance highlights India’s emergence as a global manufacturing and logistics hub. Tier-1 cities will continue to attract significant capital, supported by government initiatives like ‘Make in India.’”
With growing demand for high-quality industrial spaces and evolving supply chain models, the industrial and warehousing sector is poised to maintain its upward trajectory in 2025 Moreover, a balanced influx from domestic and foreign investors is expected to boost other asset classes, including residential and office segments, in the coming years.
