HAMBURG: German SMEs are increasingly turning their attention on India as they look to reorient their supply chains – but suggestions that this forms part of a move away from China may be misplaced.
D Z B a n k ’ s M e d i u m - s i z e d businesses, regional new orientation after crises: India overtaking China and the USA report notes that in the past 18 months, India has overtaken every region, apart from Europe, when it comes to supply chain realignment among German firms.
“This is certainly a result of India’s economic success in recent years, with its economy up 7.7% in 2023,” says the report.
“This growth momentum is unlikely to slow down in the next two years, but India is also benefiting as a consequence of the restructuring of global supply chains following the deliverydisruptionswesawin2021and 2022.” The report notes automotive, food and mechanical engineering as sectors drawn to India, with general interest by SMEs hovering around 25%,upfrom15%in2022
However, while the focus on India may have been linked to a desire to avoid the pitfalls of the pandemic, the report seems to suggest that despite these industries having been particularly hard hit by delays, they are not switching off from China.
Where DZ’s 2022 report found 15% wanting to decouple from China, that figure has dropped to 10%, with 17% even wanting to expand their China footprint, up from 14.9%.
“This means that many mediumsized companies are again neglecting the considerable risk of too-close trade relations with China, which cannot be dismissed, given the e x p e r i e n c e s t h e y f a c e d w i t h interrupted supply chains,” the report says.
“High margins and the extremely diverse offering from China – from raw materials to finished products for all industries – seem to be too tempting.”
NEW DELHI: India’s Customs duty collections are set to maintain their trillion-rupee streak, according to the latest Budget estimates.
For the third consecutive year, these collections are projected to exceed Rs 2 trillion in fiscal year 2024-25 (FY25).
This consistent performance u n d e r s c o r e s t h e c o n t i n u e d importance of import duties as a significant revenue source for the Indian government.
However, beneath this apparent strength lies a more complex narrative. Despite the impressive absolute figures, Customs duty is playing an increasingly diminished r o l e i n I n d i a ’ s o v e r a l l t a x
structure.
This trend points to a shifting landscape in the country’s fiscal policy and economic priorities.
The sustained high collections mask a gradual decline in the relative importance of Customs duty within India’s tax framework.
This change reflects broader economic shifts, potentially including increased domestic production, c h a n g i n g t r a d e p a t t e r n s , o r adjustments in tax policy focus.
As India continues to evolve its economic strategies, the role of Customs duty remains in flux.
While still a crucial component of government revenue, its declining significance in the broader tax picture
s u g g
consideration in future fiscal planning.
Policymakers and economists will be closely watching how this trend develops, as it could have far-reaching implications for India’s trade policies, domestic manufacturing initiatives, and overall economic growth strategies in the coming years.

NEW DELHI: Domestic exporters have expressed concerns over the crisis in Bangladesh and said the developments in the neighbouring country would have implications on bilateral trade.
However, exporters expect that the situation may normalise soon. According to exporters, they are already facing disruptions in exports to Bangladesh due to a shortage of foreign exchange in that country India’s exports of perishable goods are facing challenges at the border Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned, and an interim Government is taking over in the Country
“We were facing some disruptions due to the issues in Bangladesh, but we are expecting that the situation will be restored soon and trade will not face any challenge,” Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) Director General Ajay Sahai said.
West Bengal-based exporter and Managing Director of PATTON Sanjay Budhia said that as the two countries have close economic and geographic ties, the crisis can have a
significant impact on India’s trade.
India exports a variety of goods to Bangladesh, including cotton, machinery and food products, while imports goods like jute and fish.
B u d h i a s a i d t h a t s u p p l y disruptions can affect these sectors, and any crisis leading to border closures or increased security can disrupt the flow of goods, affecting the bilateral trade.
FIEO Regional Chair man (Eastern Region) Yogesh Gupta said the development would have an impact on bilateral trade.
“ S u c h i n c i d e n t s h u r t t h e movement of goods at borders,” Gupta said.
Sharing similar views, PSY Ltd owner Pravin Saraf said the crisis in Bangladesh would have long-term implications.
“We were already facing payment delay issues in that country because of forex shortage there, and now this development would further hurt the bilateral trade. We do not know when the situation will be normalised,” Saraf said.
“As Bangladesh experiences political turmoil, it is essential for all
political factions to protect garment and other factories and keep supply lines open across the border to sustain trade and economic activity,” Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) founder Ajay Srivastava said.
He said Bangladesh’s economic challenges have negatively impacted bilateral trade in recent years.
Bangladesh is India’s biggest trade partner in South Asia and India is the second biggest trade partner of the neighbouring country in Asia.
According to GTRI, India’s exports to Bangladesh are highly diversified, covering sectors like agriculture, textiles, machinery, electronics, auto parts, iron and steel, electricity and plastics.
Notably, most of these exports to Bangladesh are subject to full tariffs and fall outside the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) agreement.
In contrast, Bangladesh’s exports to India are concentrated in a few categories, with textiles, garments, and made-ups making up 56 per cent of their exports. These items benefit from zero tariffs under the SAFTA agreement, extended by India.
NEW DELHI : India’s Economy is expected to grow at 7-7.2 per cent in the current fiscal year driven by robust economic fundamentals and continuity in domestic policy reforms, Deloitte India said.
The August update of Deloitte’s India Economic Outlook said several initiatives in the Union Budget 2024-25 toward improving agriculture productivity, creating jobs for the youth, and in manufacturing and addressing the challenge of access to finance for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), would help
improve supply-side demand, curb inflation, and prop up consumer spending, especially in rural areas.
Deloitte India Economist Rumki Majumdar said, India will witness robust growth in the second half after a period of uncertainty in the first six months of the year
“Key contributing factors include the continuity in domestic policy reforms, reduced uncertainties in the U S p o s t - e l e c t i o n s , a n d m o r e synchronous global growth within a low inflation regime.
“The much-desirable policy pivot
was evident in the Union Budget presented last month. Reducing the urban and rural spending gap in the coming years will ensure sustained consumer demand from a larger consumer base,” it added.
Deloitte India’s growth projection i s a t p a r w i t h t h a t o f R B I , which projected FY’25 growth at 7 2 per cent It is higher than Finance Ministry’s Economic Survey which estimated GDP expansion between 6.5-7 per cent.
The Indian economy grew at 8.2 per cent in 2023-24 fiscal year
