Year 2021 will be 1st year in history of Container Shipping when carrier profits approach $100 bn : Drewry Report LONDON: Drewry’s latest Container Forecaster report includes huge upgrades for freight rates and carrier profits as market faces extended period of under supply. The latest edition of Drewry’s Container Forecaster finds that 2021 will be the first year in the history of container shipping when carrier profits approach $100 billion and average freight rates jump by 50%, against a background of huge operational disruptions to the port and ship systems. Many of the themes covered in the latest edition will be familiar. Port congestion and equipment availability challenges, for example, have not gone away and continue to drive market prices, but what is different from three months ago is that some of the numbers are much bigger. The latest edition, published on 30 June, includes a relatively small forecast upgrade for world port throughput in 2021-22, but significantly inflated outlooks for freight rates and carrier profits over the same period. Volumes are expected to continue to rise through the 3Q21 peak season and to end the year with annual growth of approximately 10%. There will still be growth next year, but probably only about half as strong as consumer spending is expected to move back towards services as Covid-related restrictions are lifted. The containership fleet is not growing fast enough to meet insatiable demand right now. A scarcity of open charter fixtures means that some lines are scouring the second-hand market for expensive new assets to add to the pile, but others can only supplement with newbuild deliveries, or are simply having to make do with what they have.

Source: Drewry Maritime Research Cautious newbuild contracting of recent years means that we expect the cellular fleet to only increase by 4.2% this year and 2.8% in 2022, in both cases significantly below that of world port throughput projections. Appetite for new tonnage has accelerated since 2H20 and in less than six full months this year’s contracting activity is already close to the record 2.7 million teu placed in 2007. Drewry maintains the view that high levels of newbuild contracting for 2023 pose a risk of overcapacity returning to the market during that year, but future supply requirements are heavily clouded by new environment regulations due to become law at the start of 2023, that may or may not see significant chunks of the containership fleet slowdown in order to comply. This edition contains a special summary analysis of the action points from the June IMO MEPC76 meeting as well as some of the potential pathways for the industry to meet the decarbonisation targets. The big change to our forecasts comes from our freight rate and profitability outlooks. Box shipping rates reached new highs in 2Q21 as spot rates continued to surge and contract pricing followed suit. At the moment it is hard to predict when prices will peak as worsening supply-chain disruption continues to stoke pricing on a weekly basis. We are now getting accustomed to seeing triple-digit annual growth rates for spot rates on most lanes. That these instances are no longer shocking is further proof, if needed, that the market truly is crazy right now. Average freight rates (spot and contract) across global trades are expected to rise by around 50% in 2021, an uplift of as much as 30% on our March forecast, indicative of the acceleration in pricing seen already through 1H21. The extreme increases in freight rates have naturally translated into Source: Drewry Maritime Research, b l o c k b u s t i n g c a r r i e r derived from ocean carrier financial reports profits. Carriers posted a record EBIT result in 1Q21 of $27.1 billion, up from what now looks a miniscule $1.6bn in same period one year ago. So impressive are the latest quarterly results, they even

eclipsed the full-year 2020 EBIT of $25.4bn. Given the substantially higher freight rate forecast for this year, Drewry has made a major upgrade to our full-year 2021 industry EBIT outlook. We are now forecasting industry EBIT of approximately $80 billion for this year – up from our previous estimate of $35bn. If freight rates surpass expectations in the remainder of the year, we would not be surprised to see an annual profit line in the region of $100bn. For 2022, we expect EBIT to drop by a bit more than one-third due to softening freight rates and rising costs that may stay higher for longer with many carriers locking into expensive longer-term charter fixtures. Nonetheless, it would represent another astonishing performance by historical standards. Regrettably, Drewry is less optimistic about a solution being found to fix the supply chain disruption and thinks the market is facing medium-term (or extended) under-supply. Events at the South China port of Yantian (a Covid-19 outbreak in May hobbled operations for nearly a month, with knock-on congestion at nearby ports in Asia), and earlier in the Suez Canal, demonstrate just how fragile the container shipping eco-system is and how challenging it is to try and build in more resilience.

Source: Drewry Maritime Research Supply side disruption has become the key driver of freight rates and remains the top sensitivity to our forecasts. Drewry now thinks lower port productivity will continue into 2022. Subsequently, Drewry expects the Global supply-demand index to average 105.7 in 2021, up 0.9 points on our previous assessment. Any reading above 100 indicates tightness of supply in the market. Drewry estimates that 16% of worldwide effective capacity (the slots available to the market) will have been lost this year as direct consequence of lower port productivity, following on from an 11% reduction last year. In an alternative reality when Covid-19 did not damage port operations and productivity was maintained at 2019-levels the Global Supply-Demand Index would have averaged only 84.0 in 2020 and 89.0 this year. That timeline is not seeing the record freight rates and carrier profits we are experiencing. These are some of the factors required to fix the supply chain and get containers flowing as they should, in our view: • Port productivity needs to improve – dependent on avoiding Covid outbreaks and for less liner service disruption • More reliable and predictable liner services to give ports a better chance to clear the backlog – likely dependent on improved port productivity • A slowdown in Asia to US demand to promote more equal distribution of capacity and equipment As you can see, this is something of a circular problem. Shipping lines alone do not have the power to fix things, but the industry at large somehow needs to find a way to break the vicious circle.

Source: Drewry Maritime Research Our view Even if carriers do revert to type and the current newbuild craze ends the upcycle in 2023, they will have made so much money between 2020-22 that they will be set up for years to come. They could potentially make as much profit in this window as they could have hoped in a decade, or more. Carriers’ only account in deficit is public relations. With increasing attention on shipping’s environmental footprint and tax contributions, lines are in danger of being cast as profiteering villains, unsympathetic to the needs of their customers. We hope they will be good global citizens and do more to help improve the efficiency of the supply chain.

Cargo volumes at Major Ports up by 27 % in Q1 NEW DELHI: Cargo handled at India’s dozen state-owned major ports soared 27.16 per cent during the AprilJune quarter to 180.609 million tonnes (mt) from 142.033 mt a year ago. The rebound in cargo volumes during the first quarter of the current fiscal was led by solid growths in containers, iron ore and pellets, thermal and steam coal, as well as coking coal, according to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The 12 Major Ports handled a combined 2.753 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), 57.86 per cent more than the 1.744 million TEUs handled during the first quarter of FY21.

Of this, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s busiest state-run container gateway, handled 1.364 million TEUs from 848,000 TEUs during the same period last year. Chennai Port Trust handled 408,000 TEUs during the April-June quarter from 213,000 TEUs a year ago. Thermal and steam coal shipments rose 52.36 per cent to 26.996 mt from 17.719 mt, while coking coal and others grew by 15.55 per cent to 12.372 mt from 10.707 mt a year earlier. Shipments of iron ore, including pellets through the 12 ports, jumped 14.26 per cent to 17.643 mt from 15.441 mt last year.

Deendayal Port Trust, India’s top state-owned port by cargo volumes, handled 33.125 mt during April-June from 25.049 mt a year ago, posting a growth of 32.24 per cent. Paradip Port Trust handled 30.384 mt of cargo from 25.734 mt, an increase of 18.07 per cent. Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust handled 18.557 mt of cargo from 12.097 mt, registering a growth of 53.40 per cent. Chennai Port Trust handled 11.623 mt from 7.282 mt, notching a growth of 59.61 per cent. Kamarajar Port Ltd handled 9.632 mt from 5.169 mt, clocking a growth of 86.34 per cent.

Nashik to get Rs 100cr to boost grape productivity, marketing & logistics NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of agriculture has declared a for that would boost production, productivity, marketing and logistics for the produce. The district will get a grant of Rs 100 crore under the project, which is expected to be completed in the next two-three years. The National Horticulture Board (NHB) under the agriculture ministry is the

implementing agency for the project. NHB Director (Maharashtra & Goa) Manik Patil said the project will boost the plantation of new varieties of grapes and help far mers get a good market. Moreover, cold chain facilities and logistic infrastructure will also get an upgrade. The project focuses on three major points — pre-production and value addition, post-production, and

branding/marketing and logistic. Under pre-production, various issues like bringing good varieties of grapes, planting materials and tissue culture are to be implemented. While post-production activities will focus on building pack houses and cold storages for the grapes. This will help grape farmers store their produce for a some time and sell when they get good prices.

International Container service flagged off from Beypore Port COCHIN: The Kerala State Ports Minister Ahammad Devarkovil recently flagged off the first international container shipping service under the Union government’s Sagarmala project from the Beypore port. The newly created port code, INBYP01, was used for loading cargo to be delivered at the Jebel Ali port, Dubai. A t t h e i n a u g u r a l e v e n t , M r. Devarkovil said all efforts were in place to promote international cargo shipping services from Beypore, besides the recently launched short sea container delivery services. “Discussions are going on about the possibility of starting passenger ship services as well to various international destinations. Our aim is to develop Beypore into an international destination,” he said. “Kozhikode has immense possibilities to explore the export of

various native products. All the facilities which were earlier sought by merchants and exporters’ frater nity have been arranged here to facilitate it in the best way,” said the Minister. He pointed out that the paper work related to boosting international cargo movement was progressing. Port officials said the containers loaded to Motor Vessel Chowgule-8 carried products from Kozhikodens Agro Foods and Exporters. Henceforth, exporters in Kozhikode would be able to enjoy weekly services to permitted destinations. The footwear industry would be one of the key sectors expected to benefit from the

international container service, they added. Chief Executive Officer of Kerala Maritime Board T.P. Salim Kumar chaired the flagging-off ceremony. Along with Port officials, the representatives of various chambers of commerce and traders’ forums were present at the event.

Containership prices skyrocket as rush to move goods picks up LONDON: Prices to ship containers from Asia to the U.S. and Europe are rising at a historic pace as cargo owners bid up rates in a search for ocean transportation capacity that shipping industry executives expect to remain tight for the rest of the year. The average price world-wide to ship a 40-foot container has more than quadrupled from a year ago, to $8,399 as of July 1, according to a global pricing index by London-based Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd. The measure has surged 53.5% since the first week of May. Listed prices to ship from China to major ports in Europe and the U.S. West Coast are closer to $12,000 a container,

by Drewr y ’s measure, and some companies say they are being charged $20,000 for last-minute agreements to get goods onto outbound vessels. “Global trade right now is the hottest restaurant in town,” said Brian Bourke, chief growth officer at Seko Logistics, an Itasca, Ill.-based freight forwarder that handles large volumes of trans-Pacific shipments. “If you want to get a reservation, you need to plan it out two months in advance. Everyone’s trying to grab any spot they can and they’re all spoken for.” Shipping experts say the rising ocean rates are the result of disruptions across supply chains that triggered

delays at ports and inland distribution networks as Western retailers and manufacturers rush to restock inventories that were depleted during the Covid-19 pandemic. The rates started edging upward last summer as consumer demand began rising with the end of lockdowns. The pricing surge has accelerated as events including the Suez Canal blockage in March and bottlenecks at gateways in Southern California and China’s Yantian port have tied up ships at sea for days and weeks at a time, with the backups rippling across supply chains and leaving containers in short supply.

Indian exporters to explore opportunities for increased trade with South Africa NEW DELHI: Opportunities to increase and diversify Indian exports to South Africa, an export market which has grown four times in the last one and a half decades, will be discussed in detail by senior officials from the Indian Consulate in Johannesburg this week in an online interaction with Indian businesses wanting to explore fresh possibilities in the post-Covid scenario. “Exports from India to South Africa, especially automobiles and pharmaceuticals, got a big push during the Pandemic. Similar opportunities exist for other items too. The Consul General of India to Johannesburg will interact with Indian companies this week on such opportunities at a virtual meet organised by exporters’ body FIEO,” a source said recently. This is part of the Ministry of External Affairs’ initiative started last year to facilitate and promote Indian exports through its Missions and Posts in various countries. Exports to South Africa Indian exports to South Africa, which was at $984 million in 2004-05, touched $4 billion in 2019-20, although it dipped marginally to $3.93 billion in 2020-21 due to the Covid-19 pandemic at

the beginning of the fiscal. Imports, on the other hand, increased 8.6 per cent to $7.5 billion during the fiscal. Despite the slight decline in Indian exports to South Africa in 2020-21, items such as motor vehicles posted a sharp 10.97 per cent growth to $557 million. India, in fact, was the top country of origin for vehicle imports into South Africa despite the lengthy Covid-19 lockdowns and overall declines in vehicle sales in 2020, according to the recent Automotive Export Manual report of the Automotive Industry Export Council. “Automobiles and parts exports to South Africa have a great potential for growth as Indian exporters could also use the country as a hub for export to other African countries,” the official said. Pharmaceuticals Pharmaceuticals is another area where there are opportunities for accelerated growth in the post-Covid period. India’s exports of pharmaceutical products to South Africa grew 33 per cent to $745 million in 2020-21 and with a focus on demand is likely to rise further, the official added. Apart from pharmaceuticals and

vehicles & components, exports from India to South Africa include transport equipment, engineering goods, footwear, dyes and intermediates, chemicals, textiles, rice and gems and jewellery. “The key objective of the interactive session is to understand the present economic status of South Africa in view of Covid-19, discuss the commercial opportunities available in the prevailing economic environment and evaluate the future opportunities of various sectors,” according to FIEO. With ties between India and South Africa intensifying not just economically but also strategically, as witnessed in the two countries’ recent collaboration at the WTO on intellectual property flexibilities for Covid-19 medical products, the atmosphere is conducive for more business, the source added. India’s overall goods exports in 202021 declined 7.26 per cent to $ 290.63 billion but in the first quarter of the current fiscal the country recorded the highest-ever exports of $95 billion, posting a 85 per cent growth over the first quarter of the previous fiscal.

Plastic exports may jump 20-25 % in FY22; Govt support needed: PLEXCONCIL Chairman NEW DELHI: The country’s plastic exports are expected to grow 20-25 per cent to USD 12 billion in the current fiscal year on account of favourable market conditions and increasing demand for domestic goods in key destinations such as the US and Europe, PLEXCONCIL Chairman Arvind Goenka said. The chairman of Plastics Export Promotion Council of India (PLEXCONCIL) also said though the order books of exporters are healthy, government support is needed in certain areas to further push exports as the sector holds huge potential to create jobs. “In 2021-22, we are expecting a growth of 20-25 per cent in exports. It should touch USD 12 billion from USD 9.5 billion in 2020-21. During April-May this fiscal year, we exported goods worth

about USD 1 billion. Government support will help us in boosting the exports significantly,” he told. However, he said the sector is facing some challenges like inadequate availability and rising rates of raw material (polymers), increasing shipping freight, container shortage and inverted duty structure due to certain free trade agreements. Inverted duty structure refers to taxation of inputs at higher rates than finished products that results in build-up of credits and cascading costs. Thailand and Vietnam, members of ASEAN with which India has a free trade pact, are key players in the sector and they are getting preferential access in the Indian markets due to the agreement, he said. Goenka said plastic consumption is growing at a faster rate but polymer production is not

increasing at that pace due to which, manufacturers are facing “huge” shortage of raw material. The sector is facing tough competition from China, and support from the government on these issues would help us in enhancing competitiveness of domestic goods in international markets, he said. China’s annual export from the sector is about USD 70 billion, Goenka said adding global exports stand at about USD one trillion. The US and Europe account for about 50 per cent of the country’s total plastic exports. “We have taken our issues to the government. Government should also soon announce the applicable rates of RoDTEP (Remission of Duties and Taxes on Export Products) for the sector as it is getting delayed now,” Goenka said.

All time high demand for second-hand tonnage LONDON: As much as 8% of the global fleet will change hands this year in what is turning out to be a record year for S&P brokers. Clarkson Research Services has provided a half-year report into shipping fortunes with its cross-sector ClarkSea Index averaging $20,717 a day in H1, the strongest six months for the index since the heady days of 2008. Many owners are hesitant, unwilling to order new ships for fear of proven green propulsion technologies, which has sparked secondhand tonnage buys

to hit all-time high volumes so far this year. The number of ships sold so far this year is more than double the long term trend More than 85m dwt has changed hands in the first six months, up 131% on the same period last year, 31% up from H2 last year, and more than double the long term trend. At this run rate, around 8% of the fleet will change ownership in 2021, Clarksons is predicting. Chinese and Greek owners are by some margin the most

aggressive buyers of ships so far this year. Given the frothy markets, newbuild orders have piled in by the most bullish owners with Clarksons recording the busiest six months for shipyards since 2014, surpassing full year 2020 orders. Clarksons has tallied 24m cgt ordered in the first half, worth $55bn. Analysts at the world’s largest shipbroker caution that steel prices and currency movements may make a similar order intake in the second half more difficult for yards.

The Coalition for the Energy of the Future launches the feasibility study of its first major project and welcomes three new members • Launch of the feasibility study of the first French project of BioLNG produc on within a large mari me port. • Air Liquide, Kuehne+Nagel Group and Rolls-Royce join the Coali on. • Tangible progresses and launch of new projects MARSEILLE: Launched in late 2019 initiated by Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group, the Coalition for the Energy of the Future aims at accelerating the development of future energies and technologies to sustain new green mobility models and reduce the impact of transport and logistics on climate change. Launch of the feasibility study of the rst French project of BioLNG production within a large maritime port On the occasion of its second CEO meeting of 2021, the Coalition for the Energy of the Future announces the launch of the feasibility study of the first French project of BioLNG production within a large maritime port. Developed by three of its members, this project will enable to advance the production and use of BioLNG for maritime transportation. Made possible by the Coalition’s work, this project will allow the transformation of household waste from the Métropole AixMarseille-Provence into liquefied biomethane (BioLNG) within the Port of Marseille Fos. This BioLNG will then be used to advance green mobility from the port, notably for the CMA CGM Group’s LNG-powered vessels. This major project represents a virtuous example of circular economy and will benefit from existing infrastructures at the Port of Marseille Fos: EveRé’s (a household waste treatment center) methanation units, Elengy’s (a subsidiary of ENGIE) LNG terminals for stocking and delivery, TotalEnergies’ bunkering ship and CMA CGM’s LNG vessels. BioLNG combined with CMA CGM vessels’ dual fuel engines will allow the reduction of at least 67% greenhouse gas emissions on a well-to-wake basis (entire value chain) and by 88% on a tank-to-wake basis (at ship level). Air Liquide, Kuehne+Nagel Group and Rolls-Royce join the Coalition for the Energy of the Future Already 14-member strong, the Coalition welcomes today the entry of three global companies recognized worldwide for their involvement into the emergence of technological innovations: • Air Liquide, a world leader in gases, technologies and services for Industry and Health, • Kuehne+Nagel Group, one of the world’s leading logistics companies, • Rolls-Royce, a leading engineering company focused on world-class power and propulsion systems. They join Airbus, AWS, Bureau Veritas, Carrefour, Cluster Maritime Français, CMA CGM Group, Crédit Agricole CIB, ENGIE, Faurecia, Michelin, PSA International, Schneider Electric, TotalEnergies and Wärtsilä in the Coalition. Together, they will bring the Coalition additional resources and talents to take up the challenge of tomorrow’s sustainable transport and logistics. Benoît Potier, President and CEO of Air Liquide Group, said: "In line with Air Liquide’s commitment in favour of the energy transition, we are pleased to join the Energy of the Future coalition and the 17 major international companies that make it up. We are convinced of the benefits of a collective dynamic. In order to accelerate the energy transition of transport and the entire supply chain, we have to work together to provide concrete solutions and develop synergies. It is indeed by acting today and collectively, to prepare for the future and develop new models of sustainable mobility, that we can have a positive impact on tomorrow's society." Otto Schacht, Member of the Management Board of Kuehne + Nagel International AG, responsible for Sea Logistics, said: “As a pioneer in sustainable logistics, we are pleased to join the Coalition for the Energies of the Future in Transport and Supply Chain. We are convinced that a collaborative, cross-industry approach will help to achieve the UN climate goals. Together, we strive to offer innovations for CO2-neutral transport solutions, such as the new BioLNG project. As the world’s leading logistics service provider connecting suppliers and customers, Kuehne+Nagel offers concrete sustainable actions for customers through our Net Zero Carbon programme.”

Adam Morton - Head of Environmental Technology, Rolls-Royce plc. said, “We are pleased to join the coalition at a time when there is so much focus across industries to accelerate decarbonisation and drive the development of technologies that will support sustainable growth in the transport and logistics sectors. The coalition’s aims and objectives complement RollsRoyce’s ambitions and targets recently published in our Net Zero pathway. We believe that collaboration is essential if we are to achieve the transition to net zero carbon and it is through the power of working together that we will succeed.” With these additional members, the Coalition continues to rally major global industry leaders from different sectors and pursues its ambition to accelerate the development of energies and technologies sustaining new, lower-carbon models to reach carbon-neutral objectives in transport and logistics. Progresses and development of new projects Since the beginning of 2021, the Coalition’s working groups have made progress on several of the projects being developed: • Tests and certification, as part of Carrefour’s projects Cathyope and H2Haul, of the first hydrogen 44 tons heavy truck in the South of France and collection of non-binding intentions to convert, as a first phase, at least 100 Diesel trucks to green hydrogen trucks in Europe, to decarbonise heavy-duty transportation in the European Union across its entire value chain: green hydrogen production, hydrogen refuelling infrastructure and end-users. • Engineering studies to be launched on dedicated biofuel for shipping based on pyrolysis, with first quantities to be produced by 2022 and industrialized as from 2023. • Development of an ecocalculator demonstrator certifying door-to-door CO2 impact on any given transportation routing as well as proposing low-emission alternatives with different levels of data details to allow shippers to precisely measure their carbon footprint. • Publication in April 2021 of a common manifest on renewable gases to accelerate the energy transition. It is aimed at unveiling the potential of renewable gases in the energy transition and of the development of biomethane production across Europe. • Technical studies on the energy balance and electrification rate across transportation route including terminals in Marseille and Singapore, to be followed by cost-benefit analysis on identified potential conversion areas. The studies have unveiled that by connecting vessel at quay we could save 5% of the total energy consumption on an Asia to Europe route, representing a potential saving of 50 tons of CO2 per vessel call in average. In addition, the Coalition is launching new projects to accelerate the development of new energies: • the production and testing of e-methane for the shipping industry, • the warehouse of the future and supply chain of tomorrow, and the new green model between warehouses and distribution centers, • new biofuels for aviation. • A study to create the digital twin of a “green multimodal hub” to synchronize and pilot the production and the distribution of green energies. An international coalition with a clear pathway towards carbon neutrality Launched in late 2019 during the French Maritime Economy Conference (Assises de l’Economie de la Mer), and supported by French President Emmanuel Macron, the Coalition for the Energy of the Future aims at accelerating the development of future energies and technologies to sustain new green mobility models to reduce the climate impact of transport and logistics. To achieve genuine technological breakthroughs with tangible results by 2030, the Coalition’s three main goals are: • To unlock a more extensive portfolio of clean energy sources; • To decrease the energy consumption per kilometerequivalent of goods mobility; • To reduce the proportion of emissions linked to transport and logistics.
