DCSA & FMC collaborate on Maritime Data Standards

AMSTERDAM,CommissionerCarlBentzeloftheFederal Maritime Commission (FMC) and the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) met to discuss the way forward for setting maritime data standards in the United States and beyond. JSW to invest Rs 180 Cr to build dome structure at port to curb coal pollution

PANJI: The Jindal South West (JSW) at the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) will invest Rs 180 croretoconstructadomestructureintheporttocurb coalpollution.

The announcement was made by the Union Minister of State for Ports and Shipping Shripad Naik on the occasion of the World Environment Day celebrationattheMPA.

Later speaking to reporters, MPA Chairman Dr N Vinodkumar said the MPA would be taking measures with an aim to curb pollution and stress on renewable energy.

“TheJSWcompanywillinvestRs180croretobuild a dome-shaped structure and this will be done on a PPP basis. The works are likely to be completed by 2025 and this will further reduce, if at all there is any kind of coal pollution. We are also stressing the use of renewable energy and partnering with GEDA for setting up a solar plant to tap renewable energy,” said DrVinodkumar.

He said ports around the world have been taking several environment protective measures known as the Blue Green measures for the blue economy of the sea trade and the green initiatives of the environment aswell.

“The Union Shipping Ministry has already

launched a policy called the Harit Sagar, a green port initiative. Under this policy, we will take up five main measures towards a green environment to achieve climategoals.”

“The five main initiatives consist of a plantation of 5,000 trees to develop a green belt in and around the port, using treated water from the Goa Sewerage Department for dust control measures and installing a 3 MW Solar plant at the port which will meet the power requirements of the port through renewable energy.”

“We will also have enhanced monitoring of the environment quality parameters on a real-time basis with the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB). We are also having a covered shed and a dome-like structure for coal handling activity which is also a requirementofGSPCB,”saidDrVinodkumar.

JNPA celebrates World Environment Day with a commitment to Sustainability

World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5, is a significant occasion that emphasizes the need to address pressing environmental challenges. As a responsible port, JNPA organized a series of initiatives to commemorate this important day and promote environmental stewardship among its stakeholders, employees,andthelocalcommunity.

JNPA launched several impactful activities to contribute towards the restoration and preservation of fragile ecosystemunderthetheme "Beat the Plastic Pollution.”

Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman JNPA inaugurated the 100 KLD Sewage Treatment Plant at Port Operation Centre (POC) in the presence of Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Dy Chairman, JNPA HODs and other dignitaries. A tree plantation campaign within the premises of JNPA SEZ was organized in association with HPCL. Saplings of indigenous plant species such as Kadamba, Sitaphal, Sita Ashok, Cassia, Parijat, Kamini etc. were planted to increase green cover, enhance biodiversity, and mitigatecarbonemissions.

With the purpose of preserving the Mother Earth and provide solution for plastic pollution, JNPA-IIT, MadrasEnvironmentalLaboratorydisplayedarticles such as ‘Reuse the plastic bottles’, ‘Recycling of E-waste’ etc. and introduced seed paper. The management team and employees along with stakeholders also took an ‘environmental pledge’ to safeguard the greens while ‘Lives within JNPA’, a coffee table book on the biodiversity of JNPA was unveiledontheoccasion.

Plastic Pollution’ on the occasion which won accoladesfromoneandall.

Gateway Distriparks ICD Faridabad connects to DFC

MUMBAI/DELHI: Gateway Distriparks Limited, India’s leading integrated intermodal logistics service provider, has successfully operated a container train on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) from its Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Faridabad, Haryana to Mundra Port in Gujarat. This achievement marked an important step towards the connectivity of Gateway Distriparks on the DFC network using its second ICD in the National Capital Region. Gateway’s flagship ICD in Gurgaon is already connected with DFC via New Ateli. The train was flagged off from ICD Faridabad on 2nd June 2023 it arrived at port on 3rd June 2023 with transit time of 30 - 32 hours. Earlier the transittimebetweenICDFaridabadandMundraPort was 56 hours using the traditional Indian Railways network.

Samvid Gupta, Joint MD, Gateway Distriparks, said, “Starting train services on the DFC from a second ICD demonstrates the company’s network advantage which we will continue to leverage to add value for our customers and improve the efficiency and sustainability of our operations. We will be able to use ICD Faridabad as a second hub location in the North and offer reduced transit times for our Export Importcustomers.”

Track doubling work between ICD Faridabad and the DFC hub station Prithla is currently in progress and expected to complete by September 2023. This will enable Gateway Distriparks to run double stack trains from ICD Faridabad to Mundra and Pipavav port using DFC Network. ICD Faridabad is situated in the Delhi NCR region, and is wellconnected to the state highway and the rail network. Thefacilityisspreadover65acresandhasacontainer handlingcapacityof1.5LacsTEUsperannum.

There are 12 Major Ports, — Deendayal (Kandla), Mumbai, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Ennore (Kamarajar), Tuticorin (V O Chidambaranar), Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia) and Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Of these, eight ports witnessed a surge in the cargo traffic handled by them during

the previous month while the remaining four saw cargo traffic at their facilities declining on a year-on-year basis in May, thestatementsaid.

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP), Kolkata Port (Including Haldia) registered the maximum cargogrowthat10.01year-on-yearin May, followed by Visakhapatnam Port at 9.61 per cent and Mormugao Portat9.43percentandParadipPort at 7.77 per cent, IPA said. Besides, Paradip Port with 7.77 per cent,

JNPA with 7.13 per cent, Cochin Port with 6.86 per cent, New Mangalore Port with 3.88 per cent and Mumbai Port with 0.77 per cent also logged positive growth during May 2023, asagainstayearago.

On the other hand, the negative growth was witnessed at Kamarajar Port, Deendayal Port, Chennai Port and V O Chidambaranar Port with cargo traffic at Kamarajar seeing the highest fall of 8.75 per cent during the reporting month, as compared to May2022,IPAsaid.

DCSA & FMC collaborate on Maritime Data Standards

“During theCOVIDpandemicthe inefficiencies in global maritime supply chains became painfully clear. Theseinefficienciescostedtrillionsof dollars which contributed to the high inflation US consumers are experiencing today”, Commissioner Bentzel said. “The issues are caused to a large extent by a lack of meaningfulandreal-timeexchangeof the data necessary to ensure an efficientandeconomictransportation system. And, because providing an efficientandeconomictransportation systeminoceancommerceisthecore responsibility of the FMC, we started theMTDI.”

André Simha, Chairman of the DCSA Supervisory Board and Global Chief Digital & Innovation Officer of MSC, confirmed the need for better data; “The traditional methods container shipping has been using to exchange data have revealed their limitations in recent years. That is why, despite being competitors, the containers shipping lines came together in 2019 and founded DCSA. The association has made a lot of progress advancing digitalization through common opensource standards, but we can’t do it aloneasoceancarriers.Themaritime supplychainismadeofseparatelinks which all need to be equally strong. We welcome the FMC’s MTDI initiative which brings together all stakeholders to identify and address the shortcomings of standardized data exchange in maritime transportation.”

Already in June 2022, it was concluded in the material provided

for the MTDI Summit that the data and the solutions to process it exist in abundance. Equally, numerous standards exist for information related to maritime freight transportation. However, “few sources have been developed and vetted across stakeholder groups. Exceptions to this are the information collected by Customs and Border Protection, the information collected by the U.S. Coast Guard on vessel entries into U.S. water, and standards developed byDCSA”.

“Throughout the initial MTDI meetings,itwasemphasisedthatthe FMC should not reinvent the wheel or impose requirements onto the industry which won’t work in an international operational environment”, Commissioner Bentzel said. “DCSA’s standards fit these criteria and provide an excellent basis on which to develop our national standard for maritime dataexchange.However,duetotheir voluntary nature, the uptake of those standards is slow. Therefore I will put forward an inquiry to stakeholders to see to what extent a rulemaking could be beneficial. If it would be deemed necessary to regulate, I do not intend to set detailed requirements, but rather to create guard rails ensuring it goes in therightdirection.

The DCSA Supervisory Board, which consists of the global CIO’s of the largest container shipping lines and representation of the cargo owner’s community, appreciated this approach. Thomas Bagge, CEO of DCSA, said: “collaboration between

the public and private sectors, as displayed in the MTDI, is essential to solve the challenges still inherent in supply chains. Such collaboration will provide better resilience, visibility and efficiency to the benefit of all ecosystemparticipants..TheMTDIis an extension of the work we began, and we are proud and excited to see our efforts accelerated in this way. Therefore, we highly appreciate the leading role Commissioner Bentzel is taking. Not just in the US but globally”.

In the light of globally leading the way, Commissioner Bentzel also met withhiscounterpartsattheEuropean Commission and Europe’s largest port authorities; the port of AntwerpBruges and the port of Rotterdam.

“I saw that Europe is very advanced in data exchange for both maritime and inland transportation, more advanced than the US. However, everybody I spoke with agreed that my recommendations to establish a (eco)system for data sharing is an essential piece to their puzzles which isstillmissing.This,togetherwiththe support of DCSA and its members, confirms and strengthens my belief that turning the MTDI into Maritime Transportation Data System (MTDS) isnecessary”.

Commissioner Bentzel’s final recommendations will be published soon. All stakeholders will again have an opportunity to provide input, after which the FMC will consider whether a rulemaking is the appropriate way forward for achieving an efficient and economic transportation system in the ocean commerce of the United Statesandbeyond.

Coinciding on the occasion of Enviornment Day, the Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal along with the port officials also planted 2500 tree saplingsattheporttoday.

India, EU seek to resolve dispute at WTO bilaterally

NEW DELHI: India and the European Union (EU) have jointly approached the dispute settlement body of the World TradeOrganisation(WTO),seekingdefermentoftheadoption of its ruling on tariffs imposed by India on some information technology products till September 19, as they try to reach anunderstandingontheissuethroughnegotiations.

The Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) has called a special meeting on June 15 to decide on the joint

request. If this is agreed to by DSB, it would facilitate the resolution of the dispute, the joint communication byIndiaandEUtothebodyhassaid.

India and EU are already negotiating a Free Trade Agreement and the decision to sort out a WTO dispute bilaterally seems significant. Already four rounds of talks on the FTA have happened and the next round is expected inthesecondhalfofJune.

Sharjah Chamber of Commerce concludes successful 5-day trade mission to India

MUMBAI: The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has successfully concluded its trade mission to India after five days of fruitful meetings and discussions with Indian business and industrial associations in New Delhi and Mumbai.

The trade mission, organised by the Sharjah Exports Development Centre, visited Indian Capital and commercial hub to discuss potential investment advantages and lucrative opportunities to further strengthen bilateralties.

A key outcome of these discussions was the mutual interest to further consolidate ties, with the Indiansideexpressingitsintentionto organiseahigh-leveltradedelegation visit to the Emirate of Sharjah. Thisdelegation,representingvarious industrial and commercial sectors,

is expected in the last quarter of thisyear.

The first major meeting brought together Abdullah Sultan Al Owais, Chairman of SCCI; Waleed Abdul Rahman Bukhatir, Second Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, SCCI; and Ahmed Mohamed Obaid Al Naboodah, Board Member, SCCI, with a delegation from the Associated ChambersofCommerceandIndustry of India (ASSOCHAM) led by Pooja Ahluwalia, Assistant Secretary GeneralofASSOCHAM.

During the meeting, both sides explored ways to strengthen industrial and commercial cooperation between the two countries and exchanged perspectives on leveraging the expertise available on each side to facilitate the establishment of joint investmentprojects.

In the second meeting, Abdullah Sultan Al Owais and his accompanying delegation met Shri Paresh Kantilal Mehta, Regional Chairman of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations, where they discussed various options to foster cooperation in several key areas, with a particular emphasis on trade promotion of local products and goods for both countries.

The meeting involved a comprehensive review of the programmes implemented by the Sharjah Chamber and the export organisations in order to achieve the aforementioned trade promotion goals.

Additionally, the two sides exploredopportunitiesfordeveloping partnerships to boost exports and explorenewmarkets.

Step aside China: This Decade belongs to India, says Nomura

MUMBAI: Time, comparative advantage and a host of supportive factors are set to propel India as the fastest-growing economy in this decade, alongside southeast Asian countries, as per a report published recently.

Nomura expects India to register a CAGR of around 6.6 per cent between FY23 and FY30, the strongestgrowthphasesinceFY10.

Having already grown at a faster rate than other major economies in the world since the turn of the Covid19 pandemic, the stage is set for India to replace China as the 'high-flying geese', thereby unlocking its full growthpotential,Nomurasaid.

With companies looking elsewhere to reduce their reliance on China, it is India and other Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia and the Philippines that have emerged as Asia'snewhigh-flyinggeese.

As per the JETRO 2022 survey, companies wanting to expand their operations within ASEAN have risen for a second straight year. And more than half of the respondents seek to expand operations in India and Vietnam within the next one to twoyears.

Though nascent, supply chain systems are evolving and some have gained more than others. Nomura in itsreportsaidthattheprocessshould

accelerate in the next 3-5 years. Asia is likely to benefit the most, led by IndiaandASEAN.

Structural reforms undertaken by the Indian policymakers in recent years and higher allocation towards capitalexpenditurecapexshouldhelp India’sgrossdomesticproduct(GDP) growth reach around 6.6 per cent per annum over the medium term, andsupporttheRupee,Nomurasaid.

"We see a few reasons to remain optimistic that infrastructure spending and execution will accelerate in the medium term, particularly in India, Indonesia and thePhilippines,"theagencysaidinits report.

The report notes that governments in India and parts of Southeast Asia have placed a high priority on infrastructure development and become more strategic around project execution and have been making significant progress.

DGTR recommends re-imposing customs duty on imports of ferro-molybdenum from South Korea

NEW DELHI: Invoking the India-Korea Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has recommended re-imposing customs duty for two years on imports of ferro-molybdenum, an alloy used by the steel industry, fromSouthKorea.

The DGTR, India’s trade defence mechanism body, is has reccomended a 5% duty on ferro-molybdenum for the first year and 3.75% for the second year. The imposition of duties will have to be notifiedbytheCentralBoardofIndirect

Taxes and Customs under the DepartmentofRevenue.

The duties proposed are as per the bilateral safeguard rules of the India-Korea CEPA, which allows such measures if imports constitute substantial cause of serious injury or threat to domestic industry. Duties that can be applied will have to be at rates applied on Most Favoured Nations for trade, which means everyone except thoseonthenegativelist.

In September 2022 DGTR, on a complaint by some Indian companies and the Indian Ferro Alloys Producers’

Association, launched an investigation into the surge in imports from South Korea of the alloy of iron and molybdenum after the trade agreement broughtdowndutiestonilin2017-18.

Withdutiescomingdowntozero,the importsfromKoreadoubledto1,598MT inthefirstyearitself.Andafterthatthey have been consistently rising, touching 4,279MTinApril-Decemberof2022.

The investigation found that the entire increase in demand between October2021andMarch2022,whichhas been considerable, was met entirely throughimports.

World Environment Day celebrated at Mumbai Port

MUMBAI: Mumbai Port Authority organized a Tree Plantation Drive at Reay Road, to celebrate the World Environment Day on 5th June 2023. Shri Rajiv Jalota, IAS, Chairperson, MbPA flagged off the drive and administered the pledge to all present. A book-let on Green Vision was released. A street play to create awareness of importance of green environment was also enacted duringtheoccasion.

On this occasion, Chairperson,MbPAstatedthat the project was conceptualized with a vision to combat risingairpollutionandachievebetterAirQualityIndexlevel inMumbai.Thelargescaletreeplantationwillcontributeto reducing pollution, improving the local ecosystem and improving the overall biodiversity. He further stated that MbPA intends to plant saplings in its vacant plots. This initiative is supported by HDFC and Mahindra Rise. Ashima Bhat, Group Head and Nusarat Pathan of HDFC were also present. Smt. Swati Srivastava, General Manager-CSR representing Mahindra Rise stated that they were grateful to MbPA for the opportunity for tree plantation and they have already selected 10 sites where about 11000 bamboo saplings can be planted.

Ms.AshimaBhat stressed on the importance of plantation and green environment and also that HDFC was always involved with environment related initiatives. It was informed that this tree plantation drive would be done at corporatelevelandatie-upwithY4Dformaintenanceofthe trees has also been made. Shri Prafulla Nikam, Founder ofY4D alsogracedtheoccasion.

Heads of Departments and senior officers attended the function along with lovers of Green Mumbai. Shri M.R.S. Qureshi, Chief Public Relations Officer, MbPA presented the Vote of Thanks.

ABIDJAN: A.P. Moller –Maersk (Maersk) discussed and presented papers on ‘Logistics 4.0: Accelerating Africa’s Digital Revolution’ at a closed-door session with some of the top CEOs from Africa. Held on the sidelines of the Africa CEO Forum, the discussion was led by Darryl Judd, Regional Head for Integration and Business Growth, Maersk Indian Subcontinent, Middle East and Africa (IMEA) and supportedbytheregionalleadershipteaminIMEA.

Digital Supply Chains to Improve Global Competitiveness

To participate in global trade, it is extremely important tobecompetitiveatalllevels–beitintermsofcostsorease of doing business. Several complexities in the African supply chains have limited the Logistics Performance Index for African countries in the past. However, a lot of these complexities can be overcome with the use of technologyanddigitalsolutions.

Africa contributes USD 2.7 Tr to the global economy from the 54 countries that are a part of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). However, intra-Africa trade only corresponds to 14% of the total trade

owing to high tariff and non-tariff trade costs. For example, agriculture contributes to 15% of Africa’s GDP and 60% of Africa’s employment. The use of mobile apps, digital payments and an increase in e-commerce are levers that can improve intra-Africa trade from agricultural produce andsubstituteimports.
