In rail operations the port handled 86,452 TEUS of ICD traffic from 551 rakes in May, 2021 and the Rail-Coefficient is 19.03%. Cont’d. Pg. 4
MSC CEO Soren Toft calls for global approach to R&D and carbon pricing GENEVA: MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has joined other carriers in reiterating support for a global R&D decarbonisation fund and also in backing a potential worldwide market-based measure that would include carbon pricing, informed a recent communique from the company. On top of MSC’s own substantial efforts to boost fleet energy efficiency and trial a range of new fuels and technologies, specific global initiatives are required to help the shipping industry decarbonise, according to MSC CEO Soren Toft: “Some form of global market-based-measure, incorporating carbon pricing, could help the industry to decarbonise by reducing the price
gap between fossil fuels and zero-carbon fuels as they become available. At the same time, despite our huge investments into our fleet and operations, scalable long-ter m solutions simply do not currently exist for us to deploy on our ships. There is a gap in R&D to bring these alternative fuels and technologies to the market and the industry wide research fund will help us achieve the UN IMO’s policy targets.” Cont’d. Pg. 4

MSC CEO Soren Toft calls for global approach to R&D and carbon pricing Cont’d. from Pg. 3
Today, the only commercially available options to significantly reduce emissions from the shipping industry at scale are: improving energy efficiency, LNG and biofuels. While MSC believes that these are crucial elements to consider as part of the energy transition, these options alone will not provide a long-term or full solution. Logistical and technical issues must be solved before new fuels can be scaled up for the shipping industry. The industry needs a range of alternative fuels at scale and needs them urgently. The main challenges now are to determine the right combination of new fuels and technologies and to implement viable industry-wide proposals to invest in R&D to achieve those goals, and, ultimately, the zero-carbon future.
MSC therefore joined an industry call to action to UN IMO member states to support the proposal for a R&D fund that would help catalyse new technologies and zerocarbon fuels to decarbonise the industry, in an open letter by CEOs of 17 members of the World Shipping Council on 3 June. The International Maritime Research and Development Board (IMRB) will be a USD 5 billion programme, first of its kind, and governed by the IMO, to coordinate and to raise money for research & development to lower emissions. Decarbonising the shipping industry is a battle we must win. Only with options at scale for commercially-viable low or zero-carbon vessels can carbon pricing be a truly effective tool to catalyse the shift towards a zero-carbon future for international shipping.

COSCO SHIPPING Lines and WFP sign Global Cooperation Agreement in Rome R O M E : C O S C O SHIPPING Lines and World Food Programme (WFP) have signed a global cooperation agreement in Rome, Italy on May 20. According to the agreement, COSCO SHIPPING Lines will provide transportation services for food and other United Nations-related aid to WFP. Headquartered in Rome, WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian agency, responsible for the delivery of food, disaster relief supplies, and pandemic prevention materials to as many as 100 million people from 88 countries around the world on behalf of the United Nations. In recognition of its outstanding contributions to global humanitarian work, WFP was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020. Compared with other cargo transportation, WFP has set higher ser vice standards for the transportation of humanitarian aid in terms of container condition, delivery time, and free detention. In 2020, COSCO SHIPPING established a communication and liaison mechanism with WFP, appointing COSCO SHIPPING Lines Italy to take charge of relevant operations. COSCO SHIPPING Lines
Italy, with the support of COSCO SHIPPING Europe and COSCO SHIPPING Lines, overcame the difficulties arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and set up a special marketing service team that has since successfully carried out transportation cooperation efforts with WFP. The signing of this agreement proves WFP’s recognition of the service provided by COSCO SHIPPING and lays a solid foundation for the two parties to strengthen humanitarian cooperation on a global scale in the future.
PSA International invests in supply chain visibility SINGAPORE: PSA unboXed, the start-up investor subsidiary of terminal operator PSA International, has invested in and partnered with global real-time supply chain visibility provider Roambee to co-create a verifiable item-level, multimodal full container load (FCL)/less than container load (LCL) visibility solution and ocean milestone standard backed by first-hand sensor and port operations intelligence. The approach is different from today ’s purely crowdsourced carrier, electronic logging devices (ELD), and shipping line automatic identification system (AIS) visibility aggregation as it fuses the physical and digital aspects of ocean cargo from end to end, including first mile, at port, on vessel, and last mile. PSA claimed today its partnership with Silicon Valleybased Roambee has the potential to result in 70% better ETA predictions, 90%+ cold chain compliance, as well as orchestrating timely inter vention on exceptions in multimodal transport. “Similar to the International Air Transport Association (IATA)’s Cargo IQ for air cargo, Roambee, combined with PSA’s worldwide port operations intelligence and ocean freight expertise, will be able to co-create a visibility-driven milestone standard for ocean cargo in addition to delivering
real-time, item-level location and condition for logistics automation,” PSA stated in a release. Speaking about this strategic investment, Sanjay Sharma, CEO of Roambee, said, “The ocean visibility space’s recent consolidations have still left the core aspect of verifiable visibility unaddressed. Overall, carrier data integrations focus on orders and not whether the actual FCL or LCL affirmatively completed a milestone or experienced physical excursions. With PSA’s support, Roambee will fulfill this crucial need with its immersive location-aware platform, purpose-built sensor technology, and first-hand knowledge of container movement within port operations.” Elton Fong, vice president of PSA unboXed, said, “PSA’s ambition is to visualise end to end cargo flows to improve our supply chain orchestration capabilities. Roambee’s realtime visibility combined with our CALISTA digital platform will enable verifiable, data-driven orchestration of the physical, regulatory, and financial flows for cargo owners.” With pre-trained AI & ML-powered models that Roambee acquired through its Arnekt AI acquisition, shippers can access accurate signals to verify a variety of variables about their shipment. These include whether an FCL/LCL made it on a vessel, if the temperature/humidity is congenial, if it was loaded onto the right vessel, if the container is secure, or if it is definitively in a customs clearance queue.
ZIM announces pricing of secondary offering HAIFA: ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd. CMA CGM Q1 release: Sustained strong operating and financial performance MARSEILLE : French-based CMA CGM’s net profit rose to $2.1 billion in the first quarter from $48 million in the same period last year, while core EBITDA earnings rose to $3.2 billion from $973 million, the group said in a statement. Container lines such as market leader Maersk have seen a boom in demand as the COVID-19 crisis has stoked buying of packaged goods by locked-down consumers, while supply chain disruption during the pandemic has further fueled freight rates. “The sustained demand for the shipping of consumer goods seen since the summer of 2020 is expected to continue in the second half of 2021,” CMA CGM said. The privately owned group said its shipped volumes climbed 10.7%, also reflecting a favourable comparison with the first quarter of last year when the start of the pandemic hit activity in China. To meet demand and adapt to supply chain congestion, CMA CGM added more vessels during the first quarter while continuing to expand its number of containers, which has risen by 8% over the past year, it said. The group said it also relied on its growing non-maritime business, including a new air cargo division. Its logistics business saw core earnings rise by 25.5% to $172 million, and remained slightly positive in net profit as CMA CGM pursued a turnaround of CEVA Logistics, acquired two years ago. Group earnings in the second quarter should at least reach the first-quarter levels, CMA CGM said. The group also announced the early reimbursement of $1.7 billion in loans, including the outstanding portion of a 1.05 billion euro ($1.3 billion) loan backed by the French state. Its net debt fell by $1.2 billion compared with the end of 2020 to $15.7 billion as of March 31. The Board of Directors of the CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, under the chairmanship of Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, to review the financial statements for the first quarter of 2021. Commenting on the results, Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the CMA CGM Group, said “At a time when global supply chains are under severe pressure, we have rallied together to provide our customers with additional solutions. We have expanded our fleet, most notably with the addition of new LNG-powered 23,000 TEU vessels. We have also created a new airfreight division with four Airbus A330-200 full-freighters, thereby strengthening our range of agile solutions. In this context, the complementarity between our maritime transport offer and the logistics solutions offered by our subsidiary CEVA Logistics has proven particularly relevant. Sustained demand for the transportation of consumer goods is expected to continue throughout the year. CMA CGM will continue to develop its solutions for its customers, while maintaining its initiatives in support of the energy transition of the transport and logistics industry.” Strengthening and upgrading of the Group’s shipping and logistics assets In order to support the growth of the transport market in the coming years and to offer a comprehensive range of logistical solutions, the Group continues to invest in strengthening and upgrading its shipping and logistics assets, namely through ordering new vessels as well as cargo aircraft to develop a new airfreight division. Development of the airfreight offer In order to offer its customers a comprehensive range of transport solutions, the CMA CGM Group has launched a dedicated airfreight division called CMA CGM AIR CARGO. The division, which counts four Airbus A330-200F cargo aircraft, each with a carrying capacity of 60 tonnes and a flight range of nearly 7,500 kilometers, began operations on March 13, 2021 with a first flight between Liège and Chicago, followed by the opening of routes to New York and Atlanta. With the aim of meeting market demand for fast pick-up and reduced transit times, the Group is expanding the coverage of its airfreight division to new regions with the addition of three new destinations by this summer: Dubai, Beirut and Istanbul. CMA CGM AIR CARGO completes the Group’s service offering by leveraging synergies between maritime transport and logistics. A modern, upgraded container vessel fleet In April 2021, the Group ordered 22 new vessels to be delivered between 2023 and 2024: • Six 13,000-TEU vessels powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) • Six 15,000-TEU vessels powered by LNG • Ten 5,000-TEU vessels powered by very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO)
The Group also confirmed it would be deploying six new LNG-powered 15,000-TEU vessels between China and the U.S. West Coast by the end of 2022. The first vessel will join the Group’s fleet in October 2021. The choice of liquefied natural gas, the best available solution for preserving air quality By the end of 2024, the Group will operate a fleet of 44 LNG-powered vessels. LNG is currently the best and most readily available solution for reducing shipping’s environmental footprint and preserving air quality, which is a major public health concern. It reduces sulfur oxide emissions by 99%, particulate matter emissions by 91%, and nitrogen oxide emissions by 92%, far exceeding current local and international regulations. LNG also represents an initial response in the fight against global warming. This technology is one of the first steps towards achieving the objective of carbon neutrality that the CMA CGM Group has set itself for 2050. The Group continues to make every effort to serve its customers under unprecedented circumstances In the first quarter of 2021, the strong demand for transport of consumer goods observed in the second half of 2020 continued. Congestion in a number of ports and, more generally, strong pressure on global supply chains persisted. Against this unprecedented backdrop, the CMA CGM Group continues to adapt its services and operations to best meet its customers’ needs. Boosting vessel capacities and increasing the container fleet Increase in shipping capacity of more than 12.9% as compared to the first quarter of 2020 with the entry into service of additional vessels, particularly new LNG-powered 23,000-TEU vessels deployed between Asia and Northern Europe. The six 23,000-TEU vessels already delivered by March 31, 2021 will be joined by three additional vessels in 2021, further strengthening deployed capacities. Boosting of the container fleet. Over the past year, the Group has increased its fleet by more than 330,000 TEUs, an increase of 8.1%. Reorganization of services to limit the impact of congestion in certain ports. Optimization of solutions offered to Group customers through complementary shipping, logistics and airfreight services. The Group stands by its commitment to the energy transition in transport and logistics Firmly committed to environmental protection and the energy transition in shipping and logistics, the CMA CGM Group is continuing its efforts to protect the environment. In early April, it launched the first low-carbon biomethanebased shipping solution as part of its trajectory toward carbon neutrality by 2050. The Group is supporting the production of 12,000 tonnes of biomethane (equivalent to the consumption of two LNGpowered 1,400 TEU vessels for a year), a renewable green gas produced from, among other things, organic and plant waste from European farms and that is used at methane conversion plants. Along with the dual-fuel gas engine technology currently used in LNG vessels, the Guarantee-of-Origin biomethane solution reduces well-to-wake (i.e. whole life cycle) greenhouse gas emissions (including CO2 emissions) by 67%. The Coalition for the Energy of the Future, initiated by Rodolphe Saadé, has presented seven initiatives, with initial results expected in 2021. The Coalition is made up of 14 international companies and aims to speed up the development of energy and technology for the future (green hydrogen, biofuels, liquefied biomethane…) to support new sustainable mobility solutions and thus reduce the environmental footprint of transport and logistics. By bringing together international companies from different industries, the Coalition covers the entire transport and logistics chain: energy, construction, digital technology, banking, ports, sea and airfreight, and distribution. CMA CGM was the first maritime carrier in the world to successfully test a biofuel made from recycled vegetable oils and forest residues, which reduced CO2 emissions by 80% across the entire life cycle. The Group is continuing its research and development activities, both within its own teams and with its industrial partners, in its quest to develop solutions that will eventually be part of the Group’s energy mix and lead to carbon neutrality.

CBIC cuts Tax on Ship repair services NEW DELHI: Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has notified a reduction in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate applicable to ship repairing services offered in India as part of the tax relief approved by the GST Council recently. Accordingly, maintenance, repair or overhaul services (MRO) of ships and vessels, their engines and other parts will only be taxed at 5% from 2 June onwards, down from the 18% levied earlier. State governments are expected to notify the same under state laws. Input tax credit will be available at the reduced rate.
The idea is to encourage ship repair services within the country by offering tax relief, the same way MRO services in the airline industr y is eligible for the concessional 5% tax rate in India. The idea is to keep the tax rate internationally competitive to help develop these industries. CBIC also reduced the GST rate on lymphatic filariasis drug diethylcarbamazine which is supplied to World Health Organisation for a disease eradication programme from 12% to 5% from 2 June, showed a separate notification. The tax authority also rationalised a rule relating to input tax
credit use in the case of residential complex construction service provided by a developer, showed another notification. A series of notifications were issued earlier in the week offering compliance relief to businesses in the case of delayed tax payments and return filings. A ministerial panel set up by the GST Council is currently examining the feasibility of giving more tax concessions on domestically produced drugs, vaccines and other medical supplies used in the prevention and treatment of coronavirus disease. Relief on imported covid related medical supplies have already been given.
India's foreign exchange reserve rises to record $600 billion RBI kept interest rates unchanged at a record low at 4% MUMBAI: RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das while announcing the recent Monetary Policy said that India's forex reserves may have exceeded $600 billion mark. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) actively engages in both purchases and sales in the foreign exchange market and its various segments, he said. ''The success of these efforts is reflected in the stability and orderliness in market conditions and in the exchange rate in spite of large global spillovers. In the process, strength is imparted to the
country’s balance sheet by the accumulation of reserves,'' Das added. The countr y's foreign exchange reserves rose by $2.865 billion to a record high of $592.894 billion for the week ended May 21, boosted by gold and currency assets, RBI data showed. The previous alltime high for the forex kitty was $590.185 billion for the week ended January 29, 2021. Expressed in dollar terms, the foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units like the euro, pound and yen held in
the foreign exchange reserves. The Monetary Policy Committee voted unanimously to keep repo rate unchanged at 4% and maintain an accommodative stance. Reverse Repo Rate is maintained at 3.35%, MSF (Marginal standing facility) rate at 4.25% & Bank Rate at 4.25%. "The MPC was of the view that at this juncture policy support from all sides is required to gain the momentum of growth that was evident in the second half of 2021 and to nurture the recovery after it has taken root," Das said.
Status quo in key rates expected for balancing growth & inflation as Global import prices could push inflationary pressures: FIEO N E W D E L H I : Commenting on the Monetary Policy announcements made by the RBI, Mr Sharad Kumar Saraf, President, FIEO said that status quo in the key rates was expected, looking into the need for balancing growth and inflation particularly as hike in global import prices of commodities will continue to push inflationary pressures. Mr Saraf agreed with the RBI’s assessment that enhanced and targeted policy support are required for exports and it
is opportune time now to give further policy push by focusing on quality and scalability. He said that scalability could be attempted only if there are adequate profits in exports so that the same may be ploughed back in expansion and upgradation. However, at present the profit margins have been squeezed due to high input prices without corresponding hike in prices of exports and sky rocketing freight costs. He urged that a stable policy framework may be provided by notifying RoDTEP Rates, releasing MEIS and SEIS rates, extending Interest Equalisation
Benefits and providing non fiscal facilitation. FIEO President thanked RBI for concurring with FIEO’s suggestion and expanding the coverage of borrowers under the Resolution Framework 2.0 scheme by enhancing the maximum aggregate exposure threshold from 25 crore to 50 crore for MSMEs, non-MSME small businesses. FIEO Chief however, urged RBI and Government to extend an additional 10% credit facility, as made available under ECLGS 1.0 to ECLGS 2.0 also for the benefit of MSME units besides others.

Global Trade rebounding; Pitches for policy support for exports sector : RBI Governor MUMBAI: Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das recently pitched for enhanced policy support for the exports sector, given a rebound in global trade. The external demand is strengthening and the global demand conditions are set to improve further on fiscal stimulus packages and fast progress of vaccination in advanced economies, Das said while announcing the Monetary Policy Committee's (MPC) decision to go for status quo in rates. "The need of the hour is for enhanced and targeted policy support for exports. It is opportune now to give further policy push by focusing on quality and scalability," he said.
According to him, the conducive external conditions are forming for a durable recovery beyond pre-pandemic levels. Further, the governor said that India's exports in March, April and May this year have seen an upswing, which is evident of the sector's potential. It can be noted that Indian exports fell by 7.2 per cent in value terms in FY21, as the world wrestled with the COVID pandemic which had a severe impact to consumption because of the lockdowns and consequently to global trade. The exports had surged by more than 60 per cent in March to USD 34.45 billion as against USD 21.49 billion in the year-ago period.

National Highway construction jumps 73.5% to 1,470 km in April-May NEW DELHI: The road transport and highways ministry has constructed 1,470 km of national highways in the current financial year so far, an increase
of 73.5 per cent as compared to the yearago period. The ministry in a tweet said it had constructed 847 km of highway in the
April-May 2021 period. The ministry awarded national highway projects of 663 km till May-end, compared with 747 km in May 2020, it added.
US imposes additional tariffs on Indian products WASHINGTON: In retaliation to India’s digital tax (2 per cent) on foreign technology majors, the United States has decided to impose additional tariffs on a slew of Indian imports. However, the tariffs will remain suspended for six months, as Washington hopes for a multilateral solution on the issue of digital taxation during the ongoing talks at the Organisation for Economic Co operation and Development (OECD). This follows investigation by the office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) last year, which concluded that India’s equalisation levy was “actionable” under Section 301 of the Trade Act for being unreasonable, burdensome, and discriminatory against American companies like Amazon, Google, and Facebook, and inconsistent with international tax principles. Thereafter, it held consultations over its tariff p r o p o s a l w i t h i n d u s t r y, s o u g h t
comments till April 30 and conducted a hearing on May 10. “The final determination in the investigations is to impose additional tariffs on certain goods from these countries, while suspending the tariffs for up to 180 days to provide additional time to complete the ongoing multilateral negotiations on international taxation at the OECD and in the G20 process,” the USTR said in a statement. Following the consultation, the USTR has decided to impose a tariff of up to 25 per cent ad valorem on aggregate level of trade on a slew of Indian products. These include shrimps, basmati rice and gold, with an aim to mop up around $55 million. This is as much as what India will collect from US companies through the 2 per cent equalisation levy. The US has decided to impose suspended tariffs on five other countries, that is, Austria, Italy, Spain,
Turkey, and the United Kingdom over the digital services tax imposed by them. “The United States is focused on finding a multilateral solution to a range of key issues related to international taxation, including our concerns with digital services taxes,” said Ambassador, USTR, Katherine Tai. “The United States remains committed to reaching a consensus on international tax issues through the OECD and G20 processes. Today’s actions provide time for those negotiations to continue to make progress while maintaining the option of imposing tariffs under Section 301 if warranted in the future,” added Tai. The 40 tariff sub-heads that may attract tariffs after six months include Rattan furniture and parts, precious stone articles, gold rope necklaces and neck chains, cultured pearls, yarn, cigarette paper, and corks and stoppers.
Marine products Export dips nearly 11 % to USD 5.96 bn in FY21 NEW DELHI: The country’s exports of marine products fell 10.88 per cent to USD 5.96 billion (Rs 43,717.26 crore) during 2020-21 due to the pandemic and sluggish overseas markets, the commerce ministry said. It said the US, China and the European Union were the leading importers, while frozen shrimp retained its position as the major export item, followed by frozen fish. In 2019-20, India exported 12,89,651 tonne of seafood worth Rs 46,662.85 crore (USD 6.68 billion). It was 11,49,341 tonne in 2020-21.
” The COVID-19 pandemic and sluggish overseas markets cast their shadow over India’s resurgent seafood sector as the country exported 11,49,341 tonne of marine products worth Rs 43,717.26 crore (USD 5.96 billion) during 2020-21, registering a contraction of 10.88 per cent as compared to a year earlier,” it said. Frozen shrimp contributed 51.36 per cent in quantity and 74.31 per cent of the total dollar earnings. The US remained its largest importer (2,72,041 tonne), followed by China (1,01,846 tonne), the EU (70,133 tonne), Japan (40,502 tonne),
South East Asia (38,389 tonne), and the Middle East (29,108 tonne). However, shrimp exports declined by 9.47 per cent to USD 4.42 billion. The US, with imports of 2,91,948 tonne, continued to be the major importer of Indian seafood with a share of 41.15 per cent in dollar terms, the statement said. “China, with an import of 2,18,343 tonne of seafood worth USD 939.17 million, remained the second largest market with a share of 15.77 per cent in dollar earnings and 19 per cent in quantity terms,” it said.
Indian 2021-22 wheat exports seen falling 10% on year amid COVID-19 shutdowns: S&P Global Platts NEW DELHI: After exporting a record quantity of wheat in 2020-21, India’s overseas sales of the food grain during the current marketing year are seen declining 10% over the year as localized lockdowns are propping up export prices, sources told S&P Global Platts. India, the second-largest wheat producer, made a comeback as an exporter after several years as global prices climbed with inventories hitting a two-year low in 2020-21. In the 2020-21 marketing season, India exported 2.1 million mt of wheat
against 219,690 mt in the previous year, according to Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority. India’s wheat marketing year runs from April through March. “The climb in exports happened as neighboring countries such as Bangladesh and Nepal and some middle eastern nations bought from India as it was difficult to transport wheat from their traditional sellers due to the international movement restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus,” Roller Flour Millers Federation of India
President Anjani Agarwal said. Exports also became viable for India as Russian supplies were limited following the announcement of export quota and floating tax, an Indian exporter said. For the 2021-22 marketing year, the US Department of Agriculture estimated India’s wheat exports at 2.2 million mt against 2.3 million mt in 2020-21. However, exporters fear that the country may not reach last year’s export levels as deals are happening at very slower pace.

Snowman Logistics partners with Dr Reddy’s for Sputnik vaccine across India BANGALORE: Integrated temperature-controlled logistics service provider Snowman said on Thursday it has entered in a strategic partnership with Dr Reddy’s to provide end-to-end logistics solutions for delivery of the two-dose Sputnik Covid-19 vaccine across India. Snowman will manage the delivery through five of its high-capacity temperature-controlled warehouses in Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bengaluru. The company will offer storage, order processing, shipper packing and secondary transportation from these locations. The locations are strategically located to take care of not just state distribution but the whole of regional requirements. The temperature throughout will be maintained between minus 20 degrees Celsius and minus 25 degrees Celsius. “We are hopeful of carrying a seamless drive from these warehouses through our fleet of refrigerated vehicles maintaining requisite temperatures throughout the delivery
cycle,” said Chief Executive Officer Sunil Nair. With this, Snowman will be the largest 3PL service provider for vaccines in the country offering national reach to Dr Reddy’s Lab. The company said that it has the capability to readily store 65 crore doses at any given time which can be increased to 105 crore doses with a short notice for pan-India distribution. It also has the ability to store at upto minus 80 degrees Celsius and provides real-time temperature monitoring to ensure correct conditions for vaccine distribution during the entire supply chain. In addition, the company has a capex plan of Rs 425 crore for capacity expansion, with a focus on pharma and e-commerce sectors where the company has seen huge increases in demand since the onset of pandemic, especially as there is a dearth of capacities in the organised sector, said Snowman.
