Currently, the export of onion is banned. However, the government allows shipments to India’s friendly nations. It has permitted a specified quantity of onion exports to UAE and Bangladesh. In August last year, India had imposed a 40 per cent export duty on onions up to December 31, 2023.
NEW DELHI: India is already the third biggest automobile manufacturer in the world, but it’s also beginning to flex its muscle in exporting cars to other countries.
Top brands are building cars in India and exporting to Japan. Many of these are Japanese brands, which are finding a cost advantage in manufacturing their cars in India and then selling them back into their home market. This phenomenon has been picking up pace in recent quarters Given how Japanese automakers are the gold standard in manufacturing, this is being seen as a validation of India’s auto sector
Honda
Japan-based Honda’s presence in India is significant, with Honda Cars India Ltd. established in 1995. Honda’s manufacturing facilities in India, located in Tapukara, Rajasthan, have a production capacity of 180,000 units per annum
Jeep
The seven-seater SUV Meridian made in India by Jeep, part of the Stellantis Group, is sold as the Commander in Japan. “The reason why we send our cars to Japan is because the quality of product and the competitiveness is such that it does well in Japan,” said Aditya Jairaj, Managing Director and CEO, Stellantis India, home to the Citroen and Jeep brands. “Their quality standards are so high, not every plant can send vehicles there, and we qualify.” Along with Japan, Jeep is also looking at the possibility of exporting vehicles to Southeast Asia and South Africa.
Toyota
Toyota has had a significant presence in India for over two decades The company established its Indian subsidiary, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), in a joint venture with the Kirloskar Group in 1997. Since then, TKM has grown to become one of the leading automakers in the country, offering a diverse range of models that cater to various market segments.
“It is the best case point of India’s emergence as a global manufacturing hub of strategic importance,” Toyota India says. While Toyota is yet to firm up plans to export vehicles from the country, it is shipping high-end components including e-drives for its range of hybrids. The e-drive or transaxle combines the electric motor, differential, axle and brake into an integrated assembly.
Suzuki
Suzuki has a long history in India, having previously partnered with Maruti to create India’s biggest automaker Maruti Suzuki will produce its first EV later this year, and that lot will be exported to Europe and Japan India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki has been stepping up exports over the last few years. “Faster movement through major ports has also resulted in a higher cargo loading ability as well, as major ports saw a 4.5 per cent increase in total traffic at 819 million metric tonnes (mmt) in FY24,” said a senior government officer
Additionally, the total cargo traffic handled by these ports witnessed a 4.5% increase, reaching 819 million metric tonnes. This positive trend can be attributed to several factors, including investments in improved infrastructure, the implementation of digital processes, and a greater role for private companies.
Upgraded infrastructure led to a 7 5% increase in the average daily output per vessel, while digitalization efforts like the Sagar-Setu mobile app a
streamlined operations and boosted
container terminal operations, seems to be a key driver of improvement, as evidenced by better efficiency metrics in these terminals compared to those run by port authorities This has prompted the shipping ministry to consider expanding Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) at major ports using the landlord model.
These advancements mark a considerable improvement for India’s m a
h w a s previously a weak link in the country’s logistics chain The improved turnaround time puts Indian major ports ahead of many developed nations, including the United States, Australia, and Ger many This progress is expected to continue as the government pushes for further private sector involvement through PPP models. By leveraging private expertise and resources, India can solidify its position as a competitive player in the global maritime trade landscape.
Plans to expand port-handling capacity to 400 MTPA in 3 years
MUMBAI: JSW Infrastructure, the ports business of Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group, has earmarked an investment of Rs 30,000 crore as capex till 2030 for increasing porthandling capacities, hiking capacity utilisation and expansion plans.
The firm intends to hike porthandling capacities to 400 million tonne per annum (MTPA) by 2030 and capacity utilisation to 80% in next three years, apart from scouting for inorganic opportunities.
“The capacity additions would be in two phases of three years each Our short-term target is to get to 260 MTPA in next three years, and then take it to 400 MTPA in the next phase, which includes the total estimated capex of Rs 30,000 crore. T h i s w o u l d b e
JSW Infrastructure Joint MD & CEO Arun Maheshwari was quoted as saying recently
“Our balance sheets are strong enough; we don’t have any debt. In case we need debt, we can raise that too. Funds would also come in from the follow-on public offering (FPO), which has to be completed within the next 2.5 years,” he said.
JSW Infra had raised Rs 2,800 crore through an initial public offering (IPO) in September last year, offloading 11% stake. Now the firm has to divest another 14% stake through an FPO to meet regulatory requirements.
Earlier, the company had plans to double its present total cargo handling capacity to 300 million tonne, w h i c h i t s e l f w o u l d b e n e a r l y equivalent to what the firm had built in the last 20 years.
“This is now being revised to Rs 400 crore as we have more confidence in increase in cargo movement on rise in businesses,” Maheshwari said.
JSW Infra’s capex for FY25, including the sustainable capex, would be about Rs 2,500 crore and depending on the needs, the firm is likely to revise it. The firm also looking at hiking capacity utilisation to about 80% from thepresent65%inthenext2.5-3years.
“We are increasing capacity utilisation by 10% every year,” he said, adding a part of capex would be used for it.
JSW Infra continues to scout for inorganic opportunities, including placing bids for privatisation of ports. The firm has already emerged a s a w i n n e r f o r t h e R s 7 , 0 5 6 crore-outer harbour project by VO Chidambaranar Port in Tuticorin, while a concession agreement for JNPA has already been signed.

H e a d d e d t h a t a l t h o u g h i t i s b e i n g p r o j e c t e d t h a t conceptualising the expansion of the port and its construction will take 10 years, efforts will be made to complete the project at the earliest.
Wagh said the expansion project of the JNPA is in its final stages and with increased efficiency, the current capacity of about 6 5 million containers (twenty-feet equivalent unit) is likely to reach 10 million TEU.
“Given the country’s industrial development and rise in exports and imports, it is necessary to build a port at Vadhavan from a future point of view,” said Wagh adding that the proposed port at Vadhavan has been approved by the environment department and but the approval could not be taken from the cabinet as the Model Code of Conduct came into effect.
Explaining the importance of the proposed port at Vadhavan, Wagh said the depth at JNPA is 15 metres and it can only dock ships with a capacity of 17,000 container TEU. However, Vadhavan has a natural depth of 18 to 20 metres and it will be possible to dock more than 24,000 container ships at the port, thus ending India’s dependence on Singapore, Colombo, and other international ports.
Wagh further added that after elections, the skill training work for the locals of Palghar and Dahanu will be undertaken and once the Centre gives its approval for
port at Vadhavan, they will start the construction of a hospital and trauma care centre here “As compared to Nhava Sheva, there is 43% more space available at Vadhavan We will make effective use of the space,” said Wagh.
The JNPA Chairperson also said that in the next five years, non-diesel vehicles will be phased in JNPA A parking lot has been constructed on the premises of JNPA and drivers here are being provided free healthcare and food at cheap rates. Also, high-quality educational facilities and development plans are being implemented by the social responsibility department in the villages in the area. Schemes for the protection of the environment and green cover have also been proposed. Construction of integrated food storage facility
Wagh said JNPA has planned to set up an integrated processing and storage facility for agricultural commodities on 25 acres. A proposal of the project has been sent to the Centre for approval and the firm, which is awarded the work, will be allotted space at a nominal rate for a tenure of 30 years. The estimated cost of the project will be Rs 300 crore.
Stating that this will be the first-of-its kind project in the country that will help reduce the wastage of perishable goods, Wagh said once the integrated processing and storage facility is in place, it will help store foods such as mango, grapes, pomegranate, banana, and other products such as fish, mutton, etc.

LONDON: The month of April set a new record for box ship deliveries as newbuildings continue to flood into the market.
April 2024 saw some 50 newbuilds delivered with what analyst Alphaliner described as a whopping 330,000 TEU in capacity.
To put that number in perspective its higher than the entire capacity operated by the world’s 12th largest container Pacific International Lines, and equivalent to a 1 1% share of the entire global market today
The April record follows deliveries of 41 newbuilds in March with 260,000 TEU of capacity
Cosco Shipping in the largest volume of deliveries with five ships and total capacity 58,700 TEU, and MSC just
behind with five ships totalling 58,600 TEU, according to Alphaliner.
As Ocean Network Express noted in its annual results diversions via the Cape of Good Hope due to the Red Sea crisis have reversed a demand and supply picture that was deteriorating up to the end of 2023 as increasing numbers of newbuildings were delivered.
“A few years ago, many had predicted that liner shipping would run into a massive overcapacity situation in 2024, but so far the market has absorbed all the new capacity fairly well,” Alphaliner noted in its weekly report.
“Vessels diversions via the Cape of Good Hope and additional slow-steaming due to stricter environmental regulationshave‘artificially’createdfreshtonnagedemand ”

Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) have created history by handling MSC TERESA, the largest ever Container Vessel to call at any Indian Port on the East Coast (with LOA 365.50 mtrs. & Beam is 51.2 mtrs.) on the Early Hours of 03.05.2024 with Capacity of 14604 TEU’s, according to a post on X.
The vessel was berthed at VCTPL by Capt. T. Ravi Kiran & Capt. R. C. Sarma, Dock Masters under the Captainship of Dy Conservator Sri T Srinivas.
NEW DELHI: India’s agricultural exports plunged nearly 9% in the first 11 months of 2023-24, prompting authorities to work on fresh strategies to push shipments of perishables and fruits, especially to offset the impact of the country’s bans on rice, wheat, sugar and onion exports, a senior official said.
Curbs on shipments by the world’s second-largest producer of wheat, rice and sugar to cool domestic prices, the Red Sea crisis and the knock-on effects of the Ukraine war have led to an 8.8% fall in exports to $43.7 billion during the 11 months for which latest data are available. In the previous year, total exports of farm produce were valued at $53 billion.
The government is unlikely to lift the bans on shipments of key staples due to continued risks of high food prices, prompting the government to rework its export strategy, the official said. India’s exports have fallen mainly because of a ban on staples. The country is otherwise a major exporter of rice, which makes up for more than 40% of global rice shipments. In 2021-22, the country exported nearly 22 million tonnes of the grain, about a sixth of its total domestic output.
Despite a fall in overall farm-produce exports, shipments of long-grain basmati rice rose 22% to $5.2 billion during April Feb FY24 Basmati rice currently attracts a minimum export price.
As part of its plan to boost exports, the country is adopting a two-pronged approach. It will continue to
diversify exports and push so-called “unregulated items”, which refers to farm produce not regulated by trade policies.
The government has identified 20 such agricultural produce and products with high export potential in markets such as United States, Europe and Japan. These include bananas, mangoes and alcoholic beverages, according to a second official.
According to an internal review, global exports of these items are worth over $400 billion, which the country will have to tap into since India’s share in these products is just 2% and valued at only $9 billion.
Authorities are also looking to ramp up shipments of fresh fruits and processed food items through sea routes since most perishables are shipped by air, which is expensive and plagued by capacity constraints.
For newer sea routes, protocols are being developed by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), a wing of the Agriculture Ministry, the first official said.
The country is looking to ship oranges, bananas and pomegranates especially to US and Europe through the sea route. The country recently shipped bananas to the Netherlands US and pomegranates to the US via sea. Shipping via sea channels, in contrast to air cargo, can increase export volumes substantially, the second official said.
