Port of Antwerp led PIONEERS consortium takes lead in greening of European Ports ANTWERP: An international consortium of 46 partners led by the Port of Antwerp will receive a 25 million grant from the European Horizon 2020 programme. The PIONEERS consortium representing leading ports, terminal- and transport operators, forwarders, knowledge institutes, technology developers, innovators and public entities will showcase concrete solutions reducing GHG emissions in ports while safeguarding their competitiveness. The project has a timeframe of 5 years starting at the end of 2021. 19 demonstrator projects PIONEERS is a highly ambitious project, rethinking all aspects of port operations ranging from terminal operations, concession agreements, mobility, connectivity, fuels to models for cooperation and production, storage and use of energy. The PIONEERS consortium convinced evaluators with a variety of
19 ambitious demonstrators in the field of clean energy production and supply, sustainable port design, modal shift and flows optimization, and digital transformation. Cont’d. Pg. 4
Asian Ports dominate Global Container Port Performance Index : World Bank & IHS Markit Report LONDON: Asian container ports are the most efficient in the world, dominating the Top 50 spots according to the new global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) launched by the World Bank and IHS Markit. The report scored ports against different metrics, making the efficiency ranking comparable around the globe by assessing and standardizing for different ship sizes and container moves per call.

Port of Antwerp led PIONEERS consortium takes lead in greening of European Ports Cont’d. from Pg. 3
The actions include renewable energy generation and deployment of electric, hydrogen and methanol vehicles; building and heating networks retrofit for energy efficiency; implementation of circular economy approaches in infrastructure works; automation; and deployment of digital platforms to promote modal shift and ensure optimised vehicle, vessel and container movements. Port of Antwerp lighthouse port Port of Antwerp will function as lighthouse port, hosting the majority of demonstrators and showcasing a real life Green Port. The ports of Barcelona, Constanta and Venlo, as fellow ports, will play an active role in maximising the transferability of the solutions and are engaged to implement the best practices from the project. Committed to becoming a carbon neutral port in 2050, Port of Antwerp is convinced that greening ports will only be
possible through partnerships and active dialogue with a wide stakeholder network. The coming years will be crucial to get all stakeholders on board and roll out innovative solutions. PIONEERS is the perfect opportunity to facilitate exactly this and ensure maximum transferability of innovations. Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO Port of Antwerp: ‘Port of Antwerp aims to be the first world port that reconciles economy, people and climate. In order to be climate-neutral by 2050, we need to act now. PIONEERS proves how ambitious Port of Antwerp is in pioneering together with a wide stakeholder network to achieve our goal.’ Annick De Ridder, Vice mayor: “This is an important milestone for Port of Antwerp and the entire port community which shows we are on the track with our ambitions. We want to use this financial leverage to strengthen the further greening and sustainability of the port platform and to position our port as the ultimate Green Port of Europe.”
OOCL Logistics emphasizes use of the CTU Code HONG KONG: The IMO/ILO/UNECE Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units (CTU Code) introduced a guide to facilitate the proper packing, transport and unpacking of cargo transport units (CTUs). These guidelines were published by t h e T T C l u b ( h t t p s : / / w w w. t t c l u b . c o m / n e w s - a n d resources/publications/ctu-code---a-quick-guide/). This guide is aimed to assist in planning and implementing the packing of cargo so that the shipment will be satisfactory to the shipper, carrier and consignee. It will also help in the prevention of pest contamination and damage to CTUs and the cargo conveyed by any transportation solutions. By following the rules of CTUs it reduces certain physical risks to which contents are exposed. Any improper packing method of cargo into or onto such units may result in incidents during handling or transport causing injury, damage to the cargo itself or to the handling equipment, transport infrastructure and to the environment. To prevent costly damage to cargo, ensuring the safety of personnel involved in the movement of the goods and protecting the environment, , OOCL Logistics has designed a set of Posters and Signs to illustrate the proper stuffing of and points to observe during the preparation of the
transport unit. With these Posters and Signs, we are contributing to the security & safety of the supply chain and protecting the environment.
Asian Ports dominate Global Container Port Performance Index : World Bank & IHS Markit Report Cont’d. from Pg. 3
“The development of high-quality and efficient container port infrastructure is a key contributor to successful, exportled growth strategies both in developing and developed countries”, said Martin Humphreys, Lead Transport Economist and Global Lead for Transport Connectivity and Regional Integration in the World Bank. “Efficient ports also ensure business continuity and improve the resilience of the maritime gateways as crucial nodes in the global logistical system.” “Inefficient port operations have a very direct impact on supplies across the country and their populations. During the COVID-19 pandemic we saw port delays causing shortages of essential goods and higher prices. Over the longer term such bottlenecks can mean slower economic growth, higher costs for importers and exporters and even resulting in less employment,” added Turloch Mooney, Associate Director, Maritime and Trade at IHS Markit. Regional disparities East Asian ports dominate the CPPI, led by Yokohama in Japan ahead of King Abdullah Port in Saudi Arabia and Qingdao in China. Algeciras in Spain is the
highest ranked European port, in 10th place. Colombo in Sri Lanka is the top-ranked port in South Asia at 17th place and Mexico’s Lazaro Cardenas leads the Americas at 25th. Canada’s Halifax is the only other North American port in the Top 50. Djibouti, in 61st place, is the top-ranked African port. Key port performance metrics such as minutes per container move show large discrepancies in global port efficiency, with top performers such as Yokohama taking just 1.1 minutes on average to load or unload a container in a standard port call while the average for equivalent workloads in African ports is more than three times that at 3.6 minutes. The Container Port Performance Index is based on total port hours per ship call, defined as the elapsed time between when a ship reaches a port to its departure from the berth having completed its cargo exchange. Greater or lesser workloads are accounted for by examining the underlying data within ten different call size ranges. Five distinct ship size groups are accounted for in the methodology given the potential for greater fuel and emissions savings on larger vessels.

VOC Port Trust invited bids for conversion of Bulk Berth into Container Terminal TUTICORIN: V O Chidambaranar Port Trust (VOCPT) located in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district has invited bids to convert one of its bulk cargo handling berths into a container terminal through the public-private partnership (PPP) route. Singapore’s PSA International Pte Ltd, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, Bollore Africa Logistics, International Cargo Terminals and Infrastr ucture Pvt Ltd and JSW Infrastructure Ltd are expected to participate in the tender. The privatisation of Berth No 9 into a container terminal at a cost of Rs 434.17 crore will boost VOC Port Trust’s container handling capacity by 6 lakh twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a year. VOCPT, the third largest container handler among the dozen state-owned ports, currently has two container terminals run separately by PSA SICAL Terminals Ltd and Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminal Pvt Ltd with a capacity to handle 1.2 million twentyfoot equivalent units (TEUs). The two ter minals handled a
combined 762,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in FY21 compared to 804,000 TEUs in the previous year. The successful bidder will be required to convert the 334.5 metre berth into a container terminal that can accommodate 8,000-TEU capacity ships at a depth of 14.2 metres. About 10 hectares of back up area will also be handed over to the private operator. The successful bidder will be responsible for developing the container yard, construction of terminal road and fencing, erect container handling equipment such as three rail mounted quay cranes, nine rubber tyred gantry cranes, one reach stackers, 18 tractor trailers, IT systems and other works for successful completion and operation of the terminal. The terminal will be awarded to the bidder quoting the highest royalty per TEU to VOC Port Trust. Bidders have time until June 16 to submit their qualification papers. The conversion of Berth No 9 into a container handling facility is part of a
road for the port’s transition into a transshipment hub by 2025. VOC Port Trust also plans to convert berths 1,2,3 and 4 into container terminals to handle 1.76 million TEUs with an investment of Rs2,696 crore. Another 4.1 million TEUs capacity will be created in the port’s outer harbour with an investment of Rs3,744 crore. Currently, nearly 75% of India’s transshipped containers are handled at ports outside India such as Colombo, resulting in $80-100 per TEU higher cost to exporters and importers. Routing containers via other hubs makes Indian industries vulnerable to increase in costs, logistic inefficiencies, congestion issues, and creates long term risks for India’s trade competitiveness, according to the Maritime India Vision 2030, a ten-year blueprint drafted by the government. The share of Indian cargo transhipped in Indian ports should be raised to over 75% from about 25% by 2030 to save the extra port handling charges incurred at the transshipment hubs, the document said.
Container-shortage causes disruption in rice export NEW DELHI: Growing demand for rice at the international markets is once again giving much needed respite to the exporters of the region as many feargripped countries are buying huge quantities of the commodity. However, non-availability of the containers and lack of infrastructure at MIHAN and Borkhedi ICD seem to be spoiling the game. The region that has registered the highest ever rice export of 4,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in February (this year) has seen the number falling below 2,500 TEUs in April mainly due to lack of empty containers. Prakash Khemka of Bharat Shipping Agency, one of the leading exporters based here, said that the demand for parboiled rice has gone manifold in recent past. “The order booking position of all the region’s exporters is very encouraging
but unfortunately there is disruption in shipping the commodity. There are no containers available here which is discouraging all of us,” he said. Santosh Ku m a r S i n g h , C h i e f M a n a g e r o f Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR), confirmed that the rice export from the region has gone up which has created additional demand for empty containers. However, he downplayed the shortage of containers. “We are doing everything possible to meet the demand. CONCOR is offering a discount of 25 per cent on transportation of empty containers so that the same could be made available here for rice export,” he added. But exporters said that CONCOR is struggling to meet the increased demand of empty containers to facilitate export of the commodity which is directly affecting the trade. In addition to this, inflated ocean freight is
also posing a big threat to the exporters. It has seen hike of 70 to 80 per cent in a short span of three months. It is the second season in a row when the commodity is enjoying significant demand from many Gulf and African countries that are buying rice in the backdrop of the second wave of coronavirsus. MIHAN and Borkhedi ICD together used to contribute rice export of about 1,500 TEUs per month till last year. But when the coronavirus wreaked havoc across the globe, demand for parboiled rice surged dramatically. Last year, the regional exporters managed to ship between 2,000 TEUs and 2,500 TEUs of rice per month. A special variety of rice known as parboiled rice is in great demand in many African and Gulf countries. It is cultivated in many districts of Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh.

India begins exports of organic millets grown in Himalayas to Denmark NEW DELHI: In a major boost to organic products exports from the country, first consignment of millets grown in Himalayas from snow-melt water of Ganges in Dev Bhoomi (Land of the God), Uttarakhand would be exported to Denmark. APEDA , in collaboration with Uttarakhand Agriculture Produce Marketing Board (UKAPMB) & Just Organik, an exporter, has sourced & processed ragi (finger millet), and jhingora (barnyard millet) from farmers in Uttarakhand for exports, which meets the organic certification standards of the European Union. UKAPMB procured millets directly from these farmers which have been
processed in the state-of-art processing unit built by mandi board and operated by Just Organik. “Millets are unique agricultural products from India which have significant demand in the global market. We will continue to carry out export promotion for the millets with a special focus on products sourced from Himalayas,” said by Dr M Angamuthu, Chairman, APEDA. He stated that Indian organic products, nutraceuticals and health food are gaining more demand in overseas market The exports of millets to Denmark would expand exports opportunities in European countries. The exports would also support thousands of farmers that are getting into organic
farming. Millets are gaining a lot of popularity globally because of high nutritive values and being gluten free also. Meanwhile, India’s export of organic food products rose by more than 51% to Rs 7078 crore ($ 1040 million) during AprilFebruary (2020-21) compared to the same period in the previous fiscal (2019-20). Oil cake meal is a major commodity of the organic product exports from the country followed by oil seeds, fruit pulps and purees, cereals & millets, spices, tea, medicinal plant products, dry fruits, sugar, pulses, coffee, essential oil etc. India’s organic products have been exported to 58 countries including USA, European Union, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Switzerland, Israel and South Korea.
Reefer Container freight rates soar but remain outgunned by Dry Box rates : Drewry LONDON: Reefer container freight rates have risen sharply this year but remain far outgunned by the inexorable rise in dry box pricing, according to Drewry’s newly launched Reefer Shipping Forecaster report. Drewry’s Reefer Container Freight Rate Index, a weighted average of reefer freight rates across the top 15 reefer intensive trade lanes, jumped 26% in the first quarter, on a seasonal uptick in cargo demand and rising bunker surcharges. This was its highest level since the Index was launched in 1Q17 and rates are expected to rise further through the second quarter. However, these increases are modest compared to the inexorable rise in dry freight rates, as illustrated in the chart below. “Tight container equipment availability and a shortage of slot capacity have been key drivers in forcing up freight rates, as a recovering reefer trade has struggled to compete for space with higher paying dry cargo traffic,” said Drewry’s head of reefer shipping research Philip Gray. “Despite record levels of reefer container production in 1Q21, Drewry expects equipment availability to remain tight over the next few years.” Meanwhile, container supply chain
Drewry’s Reefer Shipping Forecaster 2Q21
disruption has greatly increased demand for specialised reefer ships, driving time charter equivalents above the 100 cents/cft/30 days threshold, representing the strongest period of trading in a decade. Indeed, trade for these vessels is so buoyant that Drewry expects the fleet to expand this year, breaking a 20-year declining run, though contraction is anticipated to continue thereafter. Meanwhile, the recovery in seaborne perishables trade is expected to be muted this year by the Fusarium TR4 disease afflicting banana production. Worldwide shipments rose just 1.8% in 4Q20 and growth has slowed further since. Over the last 12 months the Philippines, the second largest banana exporter, has been notably affected by the diseases, where exports contracted by as much as 18% in 2020. More recently Peru has reported an outbreak of Fusarium, which has led to a
state of high alert not only in Peru itself but in neighbouring Ecuador, the world’s biggest banana exporter. After contracting 0.4% to 130 million tonnes in 2020, Drewry expects the recovery in seaborne reefer traffic to be l i m i t e d t o 2 . 7 % t h i s y e a r, b e f o r e accelerating thereafter to an average annual growth rate of 4%. Decline in the size of the specialised reefer vessel fleet will see containerised perishables traffic expand at a faster pace over the medium term, to a rate comparable with the dry cargo trade. “Despite modest cargo growth this year, reefer container freight rates are advancing further through the sector’s peak season and are expected to remain high through much of the year, supported by continuing disruption across the container supply chain. The same drivers will continue to buoy specialised vessel
India to import UK apples and pears in new trade link-up LONDON: British apple and pear growers can soon export to India for the first time under a trade partnership announced this week. The agreement is not as comprehensive as a free trade deal, such as those with the EU and Japan, but will reduce non-tariff barriers on fruit and other sectors. Boris Johnson announced the partnership on Tuesday, though it remains unclear when the new measures will take effect. The World Trade Organization was notified of the changes in February and from then it usually takes six months. However, delays are expected due to
India’s Covid outbreak. Nonetheless, growers welcomed the opportunity to expand their currently limited export markets – apples, pears and quince exports totalled less than £13.5m in 2020. “It’s a big opportunity and one that has been on the priority list for British apple and pear growers for some time,” said Ali Capper, executive chair of British Apples & Pears. “India is a very big market and British fruit is certainly something the Indian middle classes aspire to. “The question mark is whether we’ll actually be able to export this season or whether it will have to be next,” said Capper. Brexit disruption has had little effect
on apple and pear growers, who primarily target the domestic market. Their preoccupation in recent years has been building market share in the UK against foreign imports. British shoppers prefer smaller apples, said Capper, with bigger fruits typically used for processing or juice. If big fruits can be exported to markets such as India, then a superior price could become available. The UK government now wants a full UK-India trade deal to reduce or remove tariffs on food and drink – whisky for example is subject to 150% duty – yet some in the industry have doubts.

Lifting the curtain on the reverberations of the Suez blockage : Maersk Insight COPENHAGEN: On Tuesday March 23, a 400-meter-long container vessel ran aground and became lodged sideways across the waterway in the Suez Canal. Almost a week in and with a staggering cost of $9 billion a day in lost commerce, everyone took a collective sigh of relief when the vessel was refloated. However, the relief was short-lived and soon after, shipping lines started to warn about ripple effects. So what does this entail? If one vessel is one week delayed and one is on time – they will be sailing in parallel on the same service – causing the ripple effects to start. Affecting near 50 Maersk vessels, the impact is significant. • They will arrive to the terminal at the same time, which creates congestion at the terminal berth. • Trying to discharge the vessels simultaneously will trigger yard congestions. • Gaiting the containers out of the terminal on truck or by train creates a bottleneck that continues throughout the logistics chain – in the warehouses, the distribution centres – the list continues. It also impacts the available capacity to move cargo. To recover approximately a week’s delay, vessels must either call fewer ports, consolidate port calls, turn back before end rotations OR slide the entire service – meaning that all the coming vessels will be delayed. In both these scenarios, the capacity is lost in totality or capacity is lost in certain markets – either way it impacts customers. Catching-up a 5-10-hour delay requires hard work from dedicated teams, catching up almost a full week’s delay with upstream and downstream impact requires intense commitment from a full organisation for weeks, possibly months. Another ripple effect, but equally significant is the repositioning of empty containers. Factoring in all the vessels that were late from Europe into Asia with dry containers and all the vessels that were delayed from the Middle-East into Latin America with empty reefers, it equals a significant drop in availability - at a time where empty stocks are already severely impacted due to the demand pressures of 2020. What is Maersk doing to mitigate the impact? The first and most immediate part is working together with our customers to proactively plan the handling of delayed cargo, prioritising the most urgent/critical goods to be shipped first. The second part is how we manage our short-term booking acceptance. The integrity of our products and customer promise is paramount to serving all our customers and we must ensure that what we sell, we can deliver. The new normal is still being determined, and while we are deploying all our current capacity, we expect the situation to remain tight into the third quarter and we will need to carefully manage our intake for weeks still to come. Given the extraordinary market conditions triggered by both the global pandemic as well as the vessel blockage at the Suez Canal, we are accelerating the injection of new dry containers into our fleet. By the end of the second quarter we will have added around 260.000 TEUs. This comes after the 400.000 TEUs already added to our fleet from July 2020 to January 2021.
In addition to these larger plays, continuous efforts are ongoing in all part of the organisation to adjust and mitigate where we can to ensure reliability in our operations. Our aim is that come start of Q3, we’ll be in much better shape to once again cater to all the needs of our customers. What can I as a shipper do to be better prepared for future disruptions? While disruptions are not welcomed, they do happen. To be as prepared as possible, simulate your supply chain needs and focus on the elements that are critical. Building that mid-term plan and identifying possible issues early on will allow you to plot out your supply chain and will make it easier to react quicker and make decision based on data versus time. Business leaders can further prepare for disruptions by building resilience in their supply chains and end-to end visibility. Supply chains are global and vulnerable, and the tactical element is to establish resilience in e.g.: • How products are sourced and that critical components are dual sourced • Regularly testing and building alternative means of transportation • Different stock holding options The key is that the resilience is scalable and agile – to be switched on and off as needed, not only from a supplier perspective, but on a company level. The strategical element is to build end-to-end visibility and being able to connect supply with demand. If this does not flow in synergy, timely and right decision cannot be made when disruptions happen. Partnership is key Integrated logistics holds some of the most untapped potential to business growth in this decade. Working with partners that can provide detailed supply chain insights can permanently transform supply chain management into a competitive advantage. Partnering with Maersk provides a fast track to that potential by gaining control and getting access to an unmatched combination of physical assets, new digital platforms and unique competencies. As an example, Maersk is building robust supply chains for customers such as Novo Nordisk and H&M, who demand integrated and sustainable solutions that ensure a timely delivery of essential medicine and clothing to patients and consumers globally.
