Working on strategy to push growth of exports in goods, services: Piyush Goyal
NEW DELHI: The Government is working on an export strategy to further accelerate the country's goods and services shipments, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said He said the Ministry is working on a "very" targeted manner to take the exports to USD 2 trillion by 2030 by addressing concerns of exporters and identifying areas of India's competitive advantages and strengths
"Export of both goods and services a r e d o i n g g o o d d e s p i t e g l o b a l challenges... We are working on an export strategy to see how we can fast track growth of exports of both goods and services," Goyal was quoted as saying.

Asked about his expectations from the forthcoming Budget for exports, the M i n i s t e r s a i d Pr ime Min is te r Narendra Modi has always been "very" supportive of the exporting community
"I am sure the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister will always be proactive to support our exports," he said.
On concerns of exporters with regards to declining export credit and high interest rates, Goyal said the Ministry is looking at these issues holistically and are engaged with the stakeholders concerned.
"We are continuously looking at working with the banking system and the ECGC (Export Credit Guarantee Corporation) to find solutions to these concerns of exporters," he said.

( F I E O ) , there was a decline of 5 per cent in
export credit between March 2022 (Rs 2,27,452 crore) and March 2024 (Rs 2,17,406 crore).
The apex exporters' body has urged the Government to extend the interest equalisation scheme to help exporters deal with issues at the liquidity front.
T h e M i n i s t e r s a i d t h e y a r e discussing the issue of revamping special economic zones (SEZs) with all stakeholders as well as SEZ units.
"And I am sure a holistic solution will come out to address the concerns of SEZs very soon," he said.
On concerns of dumping of goods from China, he asked the industry to immediately approach the Ministry's arm DGTR (Directorate General of Trade Remedies) if they face unfair competition due to a surge in imports.
"India will not allow any dumping. We will be proactive in our measures," he added.
Shipping Industry set to gain infrastructure status : A boost for domestic shipbuilding and ownership
NEW DELHI : Indian Government may grant infrastructure status to the shipping industry to help improve India’s position to the top five countries countries globally in shipbuilding and ownership by 2047, two persons aware of the development said.
The status would allow shipping entities to secure funds on easier terms with long-term repayment and low rate of interest from commercial banks. This would allow improved purchase of ships from Indian shipyards and raise Indian ownership.
The country ranks 18th globally currently
According to the first of the two persons quoted above, the ministry of ports, shipping and water ways (MoPSW) has asked the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) to consider providing infrastructure status for ships in the har monized list of infrastr ucture, which could be announced as part of budget proposals on 1 February
The infrastr ucture status to shipping will be an extension to similar status already given to the shipbuilding industry, which enables shipbuilding firms to avail flexible structuring of long-term project loans at lower rates of interest for longer tenure equivalent to the economic life of their assets This also enables builders to issue infrastructure bonds for meeting working capital requirements and get tax benefits to increase shipbuilding activities.
But the shipping industry has not been granted infrastructure status so far, which deprives shippers, who also need long-term funds for capitalintensive vessel buying plans, and
support the domestic shipbuilding industry with bigger orders. Better funds access
“Infrastructure sector status would allow Indian companies access to long tenure low-cost funds which will help Indian companies acquire and operate more ships, both for coastal and global shipping operations This will help reduce the cost of operations of Indian entrepreneurs and considerably ease operational cash flows since funds available for capital intensive purchases will match repayments linked to asset’s life spanning 12-15 years This has been a demand of the industry for a while now,”
Mr. Anil Devli, CEO of the Indian National Shipowners’ Association (INSA) wasquotedassaying
“Currently, our foreign competitors have access to low-cost funds and once we get these kinds of tenors that will promote acquisition ships, offshore rigs and expand the country’s maritime footprint,” he added.
MoPSW has already proposed inclusion of coastal shipping as a sector in the ‘harmonized list of Infrastructure’ to make the sector eligible for various concessions and help in attracting cargo and passengers to this mode of transport. The second person quoted above said that the scope of this proposal may be expanded to include the entire shipping sector to bring about rapid growth of the country’s maritime sector.
“It is not just awarding the status, but Government should also ensure and d i r e c t i n f r a s t r u c t u r e f i n a n c e companies such as NaBFID (National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development) or NIIF, to grant access to the Indian shipping industry to such
kind of funds. In fact, the Government must have a mechanism that would help monitor allocation of these kinds of funds to Indian entrepreneurs for expansion of fleet under the Indian flag,” Devli said.
Extending capital subsidy scheme
Apart from infrastructure status, the government is also likely to extend MoPSW’s capital subsidy scheme –Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy (SBFAP) – for shipbuilding by another 10 years under Amritkaal Maritime Vision 2047.
The scheme, which ends in March 2026. provides financial assistance to Indian shipyards for shipbuilding contracts signed between 1 April, 2016, and 31 March, 2026 with the rate of financial assistance starting from 20% in 2016 and diminishing to 11% in 2026.
Also, a mega shipbuilding policy is expected to be announced along with fiscal and non-fiscal incentives including support from a Rs 25,000 crore Mare Development Fund (MDF).
India currently has less than 1% share of the global shipbuilding market (rank 22), which is dominated by China, South Korea, and Japan. It also ranks 18th globally in terms of ship ownership with a fleet size of around 1550 registered vessels and carrying capacity of 13.5 million gross tonnage GT). Under the Vision 2047 plan, India wants to take up its ship ownership to being among the five biggest globally with 100 million GT cumulatively by 2047 Also, the plan is to scale up shipbuilding within the country to be among the top five shipbuilders by 2047 with a production capacity of 4.5 million gross tonnage per annum (GTPA) from just about 0.1 million GTPA now.

India’s Exports rising signicantly in Global Trade
NEW DELHI: India’s export portfolio is evolving with the addition of new products, such as bananas, ghee, furniture, office supplies, and solar panels, alongside its established exports These new entrants are strengthening India’s foothold in the global market.
Currently, India accounts for 2.5% of global exports, and the government aims to increase this share to 4-5% in the coming years. Targeted markets include the United States, Malaysia, Canada, Russia, Germany, France, South Korea, China, Indonesia, Japan, Italy, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.
In November, export challenges arose for petroleum products, gems and jewelry, iron ore, and fruits and vegetables. To address these gaps, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has focused on diversifying into new products and markets. The export target for goods and services in FY 2024-25 is set at $800 billion.

The country’s share in global solar PV exports increased from 0.4% in 2013 to 2.51% in 2023. Between April and October, India exported $711 95 million worth of PV cells, with 96% shipped to the U.S. Products like registers and diaries

Toy Industry sees 239% surge in Exports and 52% drop in imports

i n d u s t r y h a s e x p e r i e n c e d remarkable growth, with a 52% decline in imports and a striking 239% increase in exports during the financial year 2022-23 (FY23) compared to FY15 This surge underscores a major leap in the quality and global competitiveness of Indian-made toys
According to a comprehensive case study titled “Success Story of Made in India Toys,” conducted by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow at the request of the Department for P romotion of I n d u s t r y a n d I n t e r n a l Tr a d e (DPIIT), the transformation has b e e n c a t a l y z e d b y s t r a t e g i c government efforts to create a more c o n d u c i v e m a n u f a c t u r i n g ecosystem.
The report reveals that from 2014 to 2020, India’s toy industry witnessed
a steady rise in its manufacturing base, with the number of production units doubling during this period. A notable reduction in reliance on imported materials, dropping from 33% to just 12%, reflects India’s growing self-reliance The sector’s gross sales value also saw a healthy compounded annual growth rate ( C A G R ) o f 1 0 % , a l o n g s i d e a significant boost in labor productivity
The study highlights India’s emerging position as a key player in the global toy market, driven by its integration into the global toy value chain. The country’s zero-duty market access for domestically manufactured toys in markets such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Australia further accelerates its export potential.
H o w e v e r, t h e r e p o r t a l s o emphasizes that in order to challenge established toy manufacturing giants
like China and Vietnam, India must continue its collaborative efforts between the government and the private sector Key areas for growth include advancements in technology, embracing e-commerce, and building global partnerships to strengthen exports.
Additionally, fostering cultural diversity in toy designs, investing in brand-building initiatives, and engaging directly with educators and parents will help create a stronger connection with children across the world.

Engineering goods exports surge for 7th month
KOLKATA: Driven by high growth in exports of ‘aircraft, spacecraft and parts’ and ‘ships, boats and floating structures’, Indian engineering exports continued its growth run for the seventh straight month to November 2024, according to Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC). Other than these two product groups, exports of iron and steel turned positive for the second straight month in fiscal 202425 (FY25) and helped engineering exports to achieve higher growth Electric machinery and automobiles also supported this high growth of overall engineering exports by showing noticeable increase in exports during November 2024.
Export growth was evident in major global regions including North America, EU, ASEAN and North East Asia Engineering goods exports grew 13.75 per cent year-on-year in November 2024 to $8 90 billion as
compared to $7.82 billion in the same m o n t h o f t h e p r e v i o u s y e a r Cumulatively, engineering goods exports during April-November period of FY25 stood at $75.47 billion as against $69 32 billion thus registering a growth of 8.87 percent. The USA remains top destination for Indian engineering exports with cumulative exports during AprilNovember period of FY25 estimated at $12.12 billion.

, Government of India, Share of engineering in overall merchandise exports was at an impressive 27.71 percent in November 2024 and at 26.87 percent on a cumulative basis In November 2024, as many as 24 out of 34 engineering panels witnessed positive year-on-year growth On a cumulative basis, 27 out of 34 engineering panels recorded positive growth.
E x p o r t s o f ‘ a i r c r a f t s a n d spacecraft parts and products’ in November 2024 surged 206% year-onyear to $781 million. At $208.7 million, exports of ‘ships, boats and floating products and parts’ recorded 92% year-on-year growth in November 2024.
Region wise, North America and European Union remained India’s topmost destinations for engineering exports with a share of around 20 per cent and 17 per cent respectively, in India’s total engineering exports. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has forecast moderate growth in global trade, with a projected 2.7% increase in merchandise trade volume in 2024 and 3.0% in 2025. The recent UNCTAD Trade Update published in December 2024 mentioned that 2025 remains uncertain due to anticipations regarding USA’s policy shift including broader tariffs that could impact global value chains.
India’s CAD to remain elevated in FY26 also due to stringent global trade policies
NEW DELHI : India’s current account deficit (CAD) is expected to remain elevated in FY26 due to stringent global trade policies, according to a report by JM Financial.
The report highlighted that the country’s imports have consistently outpaced exports, leading to a widening trade deficit. The risk of a further deterioration in India’s trade balance due to sluggish exports, which will keep the country’s current account deficit (CAD) elevated.
It said, “the global supply chain gets re-aligned with Trump’s trade policies, India’s exports will be impacted the most vs. imports; hence we expect exports to trail imports in 2025 as well”.
In November 2024, the trade deficit expanded to USD 37 billion, significantly higher than the monthly average of USD 23.5 billion recorded during April-October 2024.
The report attributed this trend to the realignment of global supply chains influenced by US Presidentelect Donald Trump’s trade policies. It also predicted that India’s exports will be more adversely impacted than imports, with exports likely to trail imports in 2025 and beyond.
“We are now building in a CAD of approximately 1.5-1.6 per cent of GDP for FY25, and depending on Trump’s policies, it should continue to remain e l e v a t e d i n F Y 2 6 a t a r o u n d 1.4-1.5 per cent,” the report stated.
This persistent deficit is expected to exert pressure on the Indian rupee (INR), potentially leading to currency depreciation.
On a positive note, the report indicates that fiscal consolidation efforts will keep bond yields in check. The government is expected to meet its FY26 fiscal deficit target of 4.5 per cent comfortably
However, this focus on fiscal discipline has led to reduced capital expenditur

x) in FY25, particularly during the election period, when capex intensity slowed.
Going forward, the report noted the government is likely to shift its focus to reducing debt levels, measured as a percentage of GDP , instead of solely prioritizing the fiscal deficit target.
This tight fiscal positioning, combined with the expected rateeasing cycle, is projected to stabilize bond yields. The report anticipated bond yields to average 6.5 per cent (within a range of 6.2-6.8 per cent) during 2025.
While India faces challenges with a w i d e n i n g C A D a n d t r a d e imbalances, fiscal prudence and a stable bond market are expected to provide some relief to the economy in the coming years.
Central Railway’s ambitious plan: Rs. 100 cr infra to boost freight capacity in Nagpur Division
NAGPUR: The Nagpur division of Central Railways is aiming to augment its freight loading capacity from 50 million tonnes to 90 million tonnes by 2030, in line with the objective of the Indian Railways’ future revenue generation and business development vision.
A major infrastructural overhaul of around nine goods sheds, including an auto hub, will kickstart shortly at different locations.
In CR’s Nagpur division, with
budgetary allocations of around Rs 100 crore, work is expected to begin soon at the goods sheds at Ballarshah, Betul, Chandrapur, Parasiya, Tadoli, K h i r s a d o h , M a r a m j h i r i , a n d Mukatban. At the Ajni goods shed, a 5,000 sq metre auto hub parking shed is likely to be constructed
An additional full-length goods shed line will be added along with terminal facilities at Ballarshah goods shed, with budget allocations of more than Rs 10 crore for the facility
augmentation. The labour merchant room and adequate drainage facilities will also be provided. The goods sheds at Ballarshah witnessed around 599 outward rakes of freight in the last financial year
The Mukutban goods shed facility will also see a major facelift with budgetary allocations of Rs 8 crore, which will include concrete platform surfaces, six high mast lights for better illumination, and other basic facilities for the workers and merchants

Brihanmumbai Customs Brokers Association Celebrates 88th Founders Day with Distinguished Guests and Vision for the Future
MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Customs Brokers Association (BCBA) proudly celebrated its 88th Founders Day on December 20, 2024, at the Indian Merchants' C h a m b e r ( I M C ) , m a r k i n g a significant milestone in its illustrious history. Founded in 1937 with just 25 agents, BCBA has evolved into a pivotal organization advocating for the interests of customs brokers across Mumbai and beyond.
The event was graced by e s t e e m e d d i g n i t a r i e s , i n c l u d i n g C h i e f G u e s t Shri Nitish Kumar Sinha, Chief Commissioner of Customs, Mumbai Zone I; Guest of Honor Shri Vimal
K u m a r S r i v a s t a v a , Chief Commissioner of Jawaharlal Nehru Customs, M u m b a i Z o n e I I ; a n d S h r i U n m e s h W a g h , Chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). Other notable attendees included Shri Sonal Bajaj, Commissioner of Import JNCH; Shri Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Commissioner of Export JNCH; Shri Vivek Pandey, Commissioner of Import NCH Mumbai; and Smt. Priya Goel, Commissioner of Import NCH Mumbai. The Board of Advisors of BCBA — Mr. Sorab Engineer, Mr. Karunakar Shetty, Mr. Rajiv Desai, Mr. George Joseph, and Mr.OmPrakashAgarwalalsoparticipatedinthecelebrations.
The significance of this day was underscored by a commitment to honour the legacy and ongoing efforts of the customs broking fraternity The event commenced with a warm welcome from Shri Paresh Thakker, Senior Vice President of BCBA, who set the tone for the proceedings. Following his introduction, BCBA President Shri Sanjeev Harale took to the stage to share insights into the history and evolution of the customs broking community. Under his strategic leadership, he emphasized the importance of addressing member issues while fostering industry growth.
This year’s celebration involved a unique pinnacle, wherein President Harale introduced an engaging trivia segment that traced the lineage of customs clearing agents from their inception in 1858 to present day This initiative aimed to deepen attendees' appreciation for their profession's rich history. The Trivia was wonderfully carried through by BCBA Committee members Mr Harsh Lapsia, Mr Mihir Bhadkamkar and Jt Secretary Mr Tej Contractor who engaged the audience with the distinctive activity
Guest of Honor Shri Vimal Kumar Srivastava delivered an inspiring speech highlighting the remarkable progress made by the customs department over the years He emphasized its pivotal role in India's journey towards becoming a "Vikshit Bharat" (Developed India), particularly through initiatives like the Customs Integrated System.
Chief Guest Shri Nitish Kumar Sinha addressed one of the most critical topics: the indispensable role that Customs Brokers have played historically and will continue to play in shaping future trade dynamics. His remarks resonated with attendees as he underscored their importance in facilitating smooth trade operations.
Shri Unmesh Wagh further elaborated on future prospects during his address. He shared insights about the new Wadhwan Port project that promises to enhance capacity significantly and position India favourably on global trade maps. His vision for a bright future for Customs Brokers was met with enthusiasm from all present.
The session concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Hon Secretary Nirav Thakker He expressed gratitude to all dignitaries present—especially Chief Guest Shri Nitish Kumar Sinha and Guests of Honor—alongside appreciation for the Board of Advisors, Office Bearers, Managing Committee Members, and attendees who contributed to making this celebration memorable.
As BCBA embarks on its next chapter following this momentous occasion, it remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for Customs Brokers while fostering collaboration among stakeholders in an ever-evolving industry landscape.
