MSC UK expands Ipswich Head Office with New Premises

GENEVA: Mediterranean Shipping Company (UK) Ltd (MSCUK)ispleasedtoannouncethe expansion of its UK head office in Ipswich, with the formal opening of an additional office building onMonday3July2023.

The 17,500 m2 building, part of a global network ofmorethan675officesin155countries,willprovide much needed additional office space along with a staffrestaurantandinformalmeetingarea.

Major Ports declines cargo traffic at 1.96% to 64.63 MT in June : IPA

NEW DELHI: Cargo traffic at the country’s major ports like-Deendayal (erstwhile Kandla), Mumbai, JNPT, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (earlier Ennore), VO Chidambaranar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia), declined 1.96 per cent year-on-year to 64.63 million tonnes(MT)inJune,withsevenports posting a negative growth while five such facilities saw a surge in traffic, an official release said on Tuesday. There are 12 Major Ports spanning acrossIndiaundertheadministrative controloftheCentralGovernment.

“During June 2023, the Major Ports handled 64.63 million tonnes of cargo against 65.93 million tonnes

handled during the corresponding period of last year. The overall fall in trafficwas1.96percent,”IndianPorts Association(IPA)saidinastatement.

Of the seven ports, which witnessed negative growth in June 2023, VO Chidambaranar Port saw cargo traffic declining 14.15 per cent followed by Kamarajar Port (9.55 per cent drop) and Chennai Port (8.62 per centfall),aspertheIPA.

Cargo traffic at JNPT fell 8.56 per cent, Deendayal Port 7.81 per cent, Cochin Port 7.32 per cent and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port (Including Haldia) saw a 5.29 per cent drop in June,IPAsaid.

Fall in cargo traffic of coking and other coal thermal and steam coal,

container tonnage, miscellaneous cargo and other liquids were some of the factors that contributed to the cargo traffic declining at the seven ports,itsaid.

However, New Mangalore Port registered the maximum cargo growth of11.26percent,followedbyMormugao Port at 10.18 per cent, Mumbai Port at 8.56 per cent, Paradip Port at 8.13percentandVisakhapatnamPortat 2.88percent,itadded.

IPA also said that during June, Paradip Port handled the highest volume at 11.73 MT, accounting for 18.15 per cent of the total cargo traffic followed by Deendayal Port with 10.60 MT and Visakhapatnam Port with 7 MTofcargo.

Trio of Iran-Russia-India promotes freight transit through INSTC

TEHRAN: The founding member states of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), including Iran, Russia, and India gathered for the third time here on July 4, 2023 to discuss solutions for promoting freight transit throughINSTC.

Theevent,“IranRah”was attended by senior officials from the three countries including Iranian Transport and Urban Development Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash, Head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) Ali-Akbar Safaei, Deputy National Security Advisor of India Vikram Misri, and Senior Aide to the president of the Russian Federation IgorYevgenyevichLevitin.

Ali Akbar Safaei, the Managing Director of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), speaking at Islamic Republic of Iran News Network said, “Following Islamic Republic of Iran’s initiatives during last year to catalyze economic growth and promote trade through interactions with the neighboring countries, there were two trilateral meetings between high-raking officials from Iran, India, and Russia in Russia and India. The third trilateral meeting was held in Tehran. High-raking officials from these three countries, the ambassadors of Persian Gulf countries and countries east and south of the Caspian Sea attendedthemeeting”.

The main rationale for these

trilateral meetings was to promote freight transit between India and RussiaandotherPersianGulfandthe CaspianSeacountries,Safaeisaid.

Speaking at the meeting, Bazrpash underlined some of the Islamic Republic’s major principles regarding the promotion of INSTC including multilateralism, partnership, transit neighborhood, networking, facilitation of trade, and intelligent and technological development of transit, and called for maximum collaboration for the development of exchanges through theINSTC.

Further in the meeting, PMO Head Ali-Akbar Safaei mentioned some of the advantages of transit through Iran for the countries in the regions and said: “Iran’s joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the EurasianEconomicUnionwillprovide unique opportunities to the country’s trade partners, and the Islamic Republic is determined to remove all its tariff and non-tariff barriers in the shortestpossibletime.”

Elsewhere in the gathering, Deputy National Security Advisor of India Vikram Misri emphasized India’s determination to cooperate with Iran and Russia for completing the INSTC, saying: “India has been a participant in various initiatives and projects regarding the north-south corridor and has always been committed to providing its resources in the best way to the implementers so that this corridor is developed in the best way possible.”

Lavitin for his part called the INSTC a humanitarian corridor and asked the countries of the region to jointhiscorridortoachieveitsgoals.

He underlined the definition of a single policy for trade through this corridor as the most important requirement for the development of tradeinthisinitiativeandadded:“The main issue discussed in this meeting is defining the same framework and reaching a common understanding for all the business operators that are willingtousethisroute.”

Established in 2000 by Iran, Russia, and India, this 7,200-km-long INSTC works as a multi-modal network of ship, rail, and road routes for moving freight between India, Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia,andEurope.

Geographically, Iran’s territory, particularly the Chabahar port, is very strategic for the activation of theINSTCinlinkingIndiatoRussia.

Sarbananda Sonowal lays down foundation stone of Inland Waterways

Transport Terminal at a cost of Rs. 46.60 crores at Bogibeel, Dibrugarh

NEWDELHI: TheUnionMinisterofPorts,Shipping &WaterwaysandAyush,ShriSarbanandaSonowal laid thefoundationstoneofInlandWaterwaysTransport(IWT) terminal to be developed at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh, by the bank of the River Brahmaputra (National Waterways 2) in Dibrugarh, Assam today. The tourist-cum-cargo IWT terminal will be developed at a cost of Rs. 46.60 crores and is scheduled to be completed by February, 2024. Once developed, this terminal is likely to play a pivotal role in rejuvenating inland waterways transportation in the regionforbothcargoandpassengermovement,pavingthe wayforgrowthoftrade&commerce.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said, “It is a momentous day for the people of Assam as we move towards rejuvenating inland waterways transport in the region by further bolstering the capital infrastructure atBogibeel.Thenewjettywillhelpusrealisethevisionset by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi ji towards enablement of waterways transportation as a transformational factor. We must respect & honour the immense potential that ‘Mahabahu Brahmaputra’ possesses, and utilise them in the best possible way to further efficient development & progress without alluding to any ecological or economic cost. Under the Prime Minister’s “Act East Policy”, MoPSW and IWAI has been making transformational changes in the Waterways sector in India over the last 9 years. These measures have led to exceptionally remarkable changes in the country. To development Waterways in the North Eastern Region, IWAI has been making all efforts to maintain the fairway in river Brahmaputra by dredging and other river conservancy works. Navigational aids and nightnavigationsystemarealsoprovidedintheriverupto Silghat. Permanent Terminals have been developed at PanduandDhubri.Duringlasttwoyears,DhubriTerminal has been extensively useful and 385 cargo vessels have moved from Dhubri to Bangladesh. To utilize Pandu Terminal effectively, an alternate road connecting Pandu terminal with NH-27 at a project cost of Rs. 180 Cr. isunderway.

The construction of the Bogibeel IWT, will enhance industrial growth leading to further requirements of transportation needs. It will add to the socio-economic development of not only Assam but the entire NorthEasternzoneasawhole.

Trial run of goods train on Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor

NEW DELHI: A trial run of a loaded freight electric train was successfully conducted between EDFC’s New Khurja station in Bulandshahr and New Khatauli stationinMuzaffarnagardistrict,officialssaidrecently.

The 59 wagons were loaded with more than five tone coal. The goods trains heading to Punjab, through the

135km fully operational track, will move on the DFC alignment till Khatauli, that will save time. “On late Friday afternoon, the train left Khurja junction and reached NabhathermalpowerplantincrossingKhatauli.Thetrain crosses over Delhi-Meerut Expressway on a steel girder bridge,”saidRanvijaySingh,sectionin-charge,DFCC.

OPEC Fund loan to improve connectivity and transportation in India

CHENNAI: The OPEC Fund for International Development (the OPEC Fund) is providing a US$100 million loan to the government of India for the financing of the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road Project – Sections II & III in partnership with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the State of Tamil Nadu. The loan will support the construction of more than 50 km of new roads, helping to ease congestion and commercial traffic to ports, while reducing pollution and travel times. Chennai port handles the second largest volume of containersinIndia.

OPEC Fund Director-General Dr. Abdulhamid Alkhalifa said: “Roads are crucial for socio-economic livelihoodandconnectivityinIndiaastheyarethedominant modeoftransportation.Betterphysicalconnectivityaround Chennai, a metropolis of more than 12 million people, will support economic growth and help meet the rising demand for infrastructure and services. By reducing congestion, the project will also contribute to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The OPEC Fund is keen infurtherstrengtheningitscooperationwithIndia.”

Road traffic constitutes around 90 percent of India’s total passenger traffic, while nearly 65 percent of all transported goods in the country are carried by roads. Indiahasthesecondlargestroadnetworkintheworldand due to its extent and climate challenges the infrastructure requires continuous upgrades. Especially in urban areas thenetworkisconstantneedofimprovementstocopewith agrowingpopulationandadynamiceconomy.

The new Chennai project includes the construction of two sections of a high priority peripheral ring road, as well as related infrastructure including bridges and access roads. The development will connect four national highways and upgrade road transport with an access-controlled road, a separate service road and safe pedestrian and bus infrastructure, improving also road safety.

To date, the OPEC Fund has provided over US$350 million of public sector financing in India for around 20 projects. The loans have supported energy, health, agriculture, education, transport and water & sanitation projectsandpromotedsustainableeconomicgrowth.
