The meet commenced with discussion with IWAI/allied partners regardingincreaseduseofInlandWater Transport through River Ganga (NW1) and River Brahmaputra (NW2) via IBP/KMMTTP route. This was followed by an interactive meet of Ministers with the Consul Generals of the neighbouringcountries(Nepal,Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar) of India. The Union Minister commended all stakeholders for their stellar role in the growth of trade & commerce through SMPK and the region as a whole since 2013-14, and through continued collaboration & enterprise aided by multi-prongedinitiatives.

High Container Availability (CAx) points at Container overcapacity at Indian Ports

• Between January-May 2023, Indian ports have seen a surge in inbound containers, attributed to a drop in demand for outbound containers.

• Despite a 13 per cent decline in exports, the Indian government is encouraging an increase in shipments.

• The strengthening India-US trade relationship resulted in a 7.65 per cent increase in bilateral trade in FY 2022-23.

MUMBAI: India has recorded a substantial increase in inbound containers at its ports from January–May 2023 with the Container Availability index (CAx) persistently surpassing 0.75 since the beginning of the year. This rise is attributed to a declineinoutboundcontainerdemand.

The high CAx values imply an excess of containers, which reflects a surge in imports leading to container overcapacity.

In April 2023, the first month of the fiscal 2023-24, India witnessed a considerable 13 per cent drop in merchandise exports, amounting to $35 billion, compared to the previous year. This is the steepest monthly fall in the past three years, indicating a significant downturn in export performance, according to data from ContainerxChange,anonlinecontainer logisticsplatform.

Nevertheless, the Indian Government is encouraging pro-export

industry groups to enhance shipments and increase annual trade volumes. India’s average container price for 40 HC containers and 20 DC containers hasnearlyhalvedcomparedtolastyear, while pickup charges on the India-US trade route have significantly risen. Thissuggestsanincreasingdemandfor containersfromIndia.

The bolstering trade relations betweenIndiaandtheUShaveledtothe latter emerging as India’s top trading partner in the fiscal 2022-23. Bilateral trade surged by 7.65 per cent to $128.55 billion,withamoderateriseinexportsto theUSandanotablesurgeinimports.

Lastly, according to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways of India, the country’s Major Ports handled a record 795 million metric tonnes of cargo in the fiscal 2022-23, markinga10percentincreasefromthe previousyear.

“The Indian economy has been persistently prioritising the promotion

of exports, driving economic momentum. However, container traders, shippers, and carriers in India are experiencing a slowdown in containerised exports. There is a noticeabledeclineinconsumerdemand from the US, European Union, and UK markets. This trend has had an impact on the volume of orders received by exporters,” said Supal Shah, CEO, ARCONContainers.

“Despite the export slowdown in India, there is optimism that export growthwillreboundstartinginJulythis year. The third quarter of the calendar yearisexpectedtobringimprovements asfreshordersandbookingsincreasein preparation for the upcoming festival and new year season. Industry stakeholders are hopeful that this positive trend will drive a resurgence in containerised exports and contribute to the overall growth of the Indian economy,” said Christian Roeloffs, CEOandCo-Founder.

IPEF supply chain pact could shift production centres to India

NEW DELHI: The substantial progress made on a supply chain agreement at the recent meeting of Trade Ministers of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) could lead to a shift in production centres of key goods and critical sectors to India, a statement by the Commerce &

Industry Ministry said.

“The agreement will also lead to deeper integration of India in the global supply and value chains, especially Indian MSMEs,” It said.

At the meeting in Detroit, the Trade Ministers of the 14-member bloc on May 27 had made substantial

progress on a supply chain agreement. Other benefits that will accrue to India by being a party to the agreement on supply chains is upward mobility in value chains; mitigation of risks of economic disruptionstoIndiafromsupplychain shocks and creation of a seamless regionaltradeecosystem.

NEW DELHI: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said India's exports have gone from $500 billion to $776 billion, a 55% increase, in only two years and that the additional exports have addedtojobs.

At an Conclave, he also said the Government is looking at pro-incumbency after 10 years of beinginpower.

"Our exports have gone from $500 billion, which was about Rs. 38 lakh crore, to $776 billion, close to Rs. 62 lakh crore... a 55% increase. That's the growth... this 24 lakh additional exports adds to jobs and Ican'tsaythatthisworkisover,"Goyal said, adding that by 2030, India will see $2 trillion of exports. He said the country is going to go from $3.5 trillion todaytoatleast$35trillionby2047.

The Minister said India's economy could achieve a 7.2% growth in FY23 because of "nine years of the pursuit of a strong foundation of the Indian economy",whichhasstrengthenedthe country'sforeignexchangereserves. "We have strengthened the story on interest rates. We brought down interest rates significantly... inflation alsohasnowcomedowntobelow5%," hesaid.

India’s Russian oil buy is now more than Saudi, UAE, Iraq and US combined

NEW DELHI: India’s import of cheap Russian oil is now more than the combined amount bought from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, UAE and the US, industrydatashowed.

India took 1.96 million barrels a day from Russia in May, 15% more than the previous high in April, according to data from energy cargo trackerVortexa.

The imports from Russia are now more than the combined purchases from Iraq and Saudi Arabia — India’s biggest suppliers in the last decade—aswellasUAEandtheUS.

Iraq supplied 0.83 million barrels per day (bpd) oil in May, while UAE shipped 203,000 bpd. As much as 138,000 bpd was sourced from the US, thedatashowed.

Russia now makes up for nearly

42% of all crude oil India imported in May. This is the highest share for an individualcountryinrecentyears.

The rise in Russian share came at the cost of traditional suppliers in the Middle East. Shipments from SaudiArabiaslippedto560,000tonnes – the lowest since February 2021, accordingtofiguresfromtheshipping analyticscompany.

OilproducerscartelOPEC’sshare in India’s oil imports fell to an all-time lowof39%inMay.

Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), mainly intheMiddleEastandAfrica,madeup for as much as 90 per cent of all crude oil India imported at one point of time, butthishasbeenslidingsinceRussian oil became available at a discount in the aftermath of Moscow’s invasion of

UkraineinFebruarylastyear.

From a market share of less than 1 per cent in India’s import basket beforethestartoftheRussia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022, Russia’s share of India’s imports rose to 1.96 million barrels per day in May, takinga42percentshare.

OPEC supplied 1.8 million bpd out of 4.7 million bpd oil India imported in May. This was down from 2.1 million bpd imported in April, according to Vortexa.

“India’s imports of Russian crude continue to test new highs, reaching almost2millionbpdinMay.

“Russian crude is likely to grow as much as they have room to back off spot crude purchases,” said Vortexa’s head of Asia-Pacific analysis,SerenaHuang.
