the issues were sorted out” says Rukhsana Vohra Mithani, Director of Sai Maritime.
Cont’d from Pg. 3
The shipment was booked and professionally coordinated by Sai Maritime, JSI Alliance’ entrusted agent in India over decades.
The performing vessel MV ANNA is one of Type 116 vessels operated by SAL Heavy Lift GmbH & Co. KG, member of the JSI Alliance that includes over 50 selfgeared heavy lift vessels in its fleet.
“Rough seas and swell, lengthy conversion procedures and revision in lifting plans were just some of the challenges that we faced during the loading operations, however thanks to the wonderful co-operation and support shared between all parties,
All appreciation goes to the SAL Engineering team who worked closely with TOTAL Movement’s Engineering Team to ensure the 5 Heavy lifts with tonnage ranging from 243 MT – 711 MT were loaded and discharged safely - keeping in mind the minute details that had to be considered and taken care of, to avoid any miscalculations and unforeseen circumstances.
Precise planning by TOTAL’s inland logistics Team greatly assisted in a quick turnaround of the vessel at discharge ports by ensuring that the Barges were alongside the vessel upon arrival to receive this precious cargo.
Ofcourse none of this would be possible without the excellent performance by the vessel’s Master and crew who spared no efforts to ensure yet another successful voyage, concludes the communique from Sai Maritime.
COPENHAGEN: What if submitting commercial data could speed up your customs processes and help you reach consumers faster? What if safe and predictable border processes could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and food waste? What if digital trade corridors could increase safety, reduce costs and make international trade more predictable? What if an ecosystem of trust for international trade could become a growth engine for the global economy?
From October 2022 to March 2023, Maersk and IBM led a consortium of industry partners looking to answer those very questions through the UK Government’s ‘Ecosystem of Trust’ pilot scheme. Alongside Hutchison Ports Port of Felixstowe, Maritime Cargo Processing, Pure Electric, Quantexa, Westbridge Foods, and WM Morrison Supermarkets, Maersk’s mission was to test a potential future border model that enables ‘frictionless trade’ through the advanced sharing of digital data.
By making supply chain visibility and trust verification data directly accessible to government agencies, one can enhance goods integrity and reduce risk to authorities – ultimately creating a trusted trade lane for border process facilitation.
The consortium ran a pilot that provided the UK Government with additional supply chain data for 700,000 consignments, and found that novel, digital, risk-based methods for border control can provide higher-quality data and decrease decision-making time for goods entering Great Britain by a significant 17%.
The tested model eliminated up to 62% of delays on imported goods that are subject to plant, animal or health
controls – having a positive effect on waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Plus, private sector customs data collection costs can be reduced by 40%, while the enhanced predictability of supply chains makes for more cost reductions through inventory optimisation.
In addition to the industry benefits, access to supply chain data improved Government teams’ confidence in their decision-making, therefore helping employees assess risk more accurately and target their resources more effectively
So what’s next off the back of the scheme?
The UK Government itself is taking forward the best practices to the Border Trade Demonstrator Initiative and the UK Single Trade Window programme. Maersk, meanwhile, is in dialogue with the UK Government and several other countries about extending the implementation of trusted trade lanes, trusted supply chains and digital trade corridors. This is the future of customs and we consider it a proud responsibility to have played our part in shaping it.

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways data showing that, India’s private ports continued to outperform those owned by the Central Government in 2023-24 (FY24), registering double-digit growth compared to 4 45 per cent growth for Major Ports. At 721 million tonnes (mt), Non-Major Ports saw their cargo increase by 11.18 per cent year-on-year in the previous financial year. In contrast, major ports ended FY24 handling 818 mt of goods.
The growth for non-major ports was primarily led by thermal coal, which accounts for 7 per cent of the total volumes of these ports. At 51 mt, t h e r m a l c o a l c a r g o g r e w b y 53 per cent in the previous financial year Iron ore, after a subdued 2022-23, also grew by 44 per cent in FY24. For major ports, growth primarily came through crude oil (5.05 per cent up), thermal coal (up 4.72 per cent), and iron ore (28 per cent).
While private ports under the Gujarat Maritime Board registered a combined growth of 7.9 per cent, the
traffic handled by the Deendayal Port (Kandla) conversely saw a 4.2 per cent contraction in its cargo volumes at 131 mt. This was driven by a nearly 5 per cent contraction in its overseas cargo.
While policy factors such as export bans on non-basmati rice may have played a part, officials believe that the port may well have lost cargo to its private peers as well. Major Private Ports such as the Mundra Port, Pipavav, and Hazira come under the Gujarat Maritime Board.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, which announced its JanuaryMarch and combined FY24 results recently, saw a 24 per cent growth in its cargo volumes and a 28 per cent increase in its revenue. The company, which closed FY24 with 419 mt of cargo, expects volumes to grow to 500 mt in 2025, particularly owing to acquisitions such as the Gopalpur Port. The Centre had announced in the FY24 Budget that it will focus on coastal shipping in public-private partnership mode.
The Shipping Ministry spent a large part of last year ironing out policy issues with the finance ministry and identifying projects for viability gap funding. In the interim, private ports have cashed in on the growing potential of coastal shipping While Coastal Shipping grew by only 1.97 per cent last financial year for Major Ports, private ports saw a 15 per cent rise in their coastal cargo. In September, this growth was 20 per cent A Mumbai-based sector expert said that industry and shipping lines are opting for private ports for trade purposes due to better efficiency parametersdeliveredbythelatter
This is evidenced by the fact that container cargo, which is a proxy for the trade of finished goods, grew by 6 6 per cent for major ports, while it grew by 17 4 per cent for non-major ports Several acquisitions in the private port space and redevelopment of state-government ports with private parties may widen this gap in growth going forward, as the new ports will unlockfurther capacity

National Highways construction in India is estimated to slow down by 7-10 per cent to around 31 km/day in the current fiscal due to heightened execution challenges, CareEdge Ratings said recently. The pace of National Highways construction in India during FY24 registered a healthy uptick of 20 per cent to 34 km/day.
"CareEdge Ratings expects National Highways Construction to slow down from 12,350 km in FY24 to 11,100-11,500 km in FY25," it said.
However, according to the rating agency, despite the uptick, the pace of
construction fared lower than 37 km per day reported in FY21 due to execution woes and an increasingly competitive landscape.
It said BOT (build, operate and t r a n s f e r ) - H A M r e m a i n e d t h e preferred mode of award, constituting around 55 per cent of the total projects awarded during FY21-24.

BENGALURU: Mango growers in Karnataka are hit by a double whammy this year — low yield and a dramatic surge in air freight charges.
The crisis in the Middle East is impacting the mango business. Exporting the fruit has become more challenging as slots are difficult to come by and freight rates are fluctuating wildly.
The Israel-Palestine crisis, and subsequent developments in Iran, have forced ships to avoid the crucial Red Sea trade route, forcing businesses to take to air routes. As a result, the demand has increased and pushed up the air freight rates.
A c c o r d i n g t o f a r m e r s a n d exporters, air freight was around Rs
awarded after March 2020 amounting to Rs.1.50 lakh crore, approximately one-third of the projects with an aggregate bid project cost (BPC) value of Rs 50,000 crore are facing delays, ranging from 4-6 months beyond the grace period of three months.
These projects have applied or received an extension of time (EOT) of a similar or longer period, it added. According to the rating agency, of the total awards of 12,300 km by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in FY22 and FY23, 20 per cent continue to await the appointed date for more than one year.
250 a kg last year It is between Rs 400 and Rs 550 this year.
Even finding export slots is fraught with uncertainty, and the rates change wildly “Ithasbecomemorevolatilethan the stock market. They quote a price and if we take some time to decide, they pass on the slot to someone else,” said Mr Hemanth Kumar from Asix Organics, anexportcompany.
This is a huge blow to farmers — exporters who don’t get slots are returning the mango consignments to them. Farmers who have exclusively grown export-quality mangoes are the hardest hit since the input costs are high and they incur losses even if the produce is sold in the local market.
“Export-quality mangoes have to
be grown with utmost care. Even a small mark on the fruit results in rejection To adhere to these standards, we have to bag the fruits a n d c o n t r o l
n
e c t i o n s F r o m harvesting to handling, it is a labourintensive process,” said Mr K Srinivas Gowda, President of the Chikkaballapur Mango Growers Association.
While exports of many products are affected, mango farmers say they are the worst hit since mangoes have a limited shelf life, and exporters have a window of just eight to 10 weeks.
Amid the Middle East crisis, disr uptions in sea trade have prompted exporters to take to air routes, thereby escalating costs.
NEW DELHI: The Indian trucking industry finds itself on a rough path again as reports from the All India Transporters Welfare Association (AITWA) indicate a widespread shortage of trucks across various c a t e g o r i e s a n d s e c t o r s T h e underlying cause? A mass exodus of drivers many of whom are flocking to their villages for weddings or to exercise their voting rights leaving a significant portion of vehicles idle.
Driver scarcity has long been a simmering concern in the supply chain industry – both internationally and in India, however, domestically this has been exacerbated by a lack of concerted efforts to address the root causes. Despite assertions of rising unemployment rates, the shortfall in truck drivers persists, underscoring systemic challenges within the profession.
A primary catalyst for the ongoing exodus is the arduous conditions under which truck drivers operate across the country. The dearth of
adequate infrastr ucture along highways, including facilities for rest, sanitation, sustenance, and parking, perpetuates a sense of insecurity among drivers, who grapple with concerns not only for their cargo but also for their own safety and wellbeing.
While the gover nment has unveiled plans to establish 1000 truck pitstops in the forthcoming years, the efficacy of such measures remains a subject of skepticism as the industry contends with escalating challenges in real-time.
Compounding the issue, truck rentals have surged significantly across various regions, despite a diminishing requirement for vehicles. The proliferation of commercial vehicles on roadways juxtaposed with dwindling driver numbers portends a bleak trajectory, with projections hinting at a burgeoning pool of idle vehicles in the foreseeable future.
The confluence of these factors underscores an urgent need for
holistic interventions to revitalize the tr ucking sector and avert the looming crisis. Solutions must entail a m u l t i f a c e t e d a p p r o a c h , encompassing enhancements in infrastructure, regulatory reforms, and initiatives to bolster the welfare and dignity of truck drivers.
Fu
streamline operations and optimize resource allocation could serve as instrumental levers in mitigating the prevailing challenges plaguing the industry
In navigating these tumultuous waters, collaboration between government stakeholders, industry players, and advocacy groups will be indispensable in charting a path towards sustainable growth and resilience in India’s tr ucking ecosystem. Failure to address these pressing concerns risks precipitating far-reaching ramifications not only for the logistics sector but also for the broader economy at large.
NEW DELHI: The Government is likely to initiate a first of its kind survey to arrive at robust and timely estimates for the cost of logistics incurred by businesses, said people familiar with the matter
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) plans to engage the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) to conduct a primary survey to assess cargo movement patterns and the cost of logistics for each component involved, they said.
Last year, the think tank had estimated India’s logistics costs in 202122 at 7 8-8 9% of the GDP , based on secondary data “We will do another
exercise along with the NCAER because the previous one was based on secondary data This time, it will combin
ginal surveys,” said an official, who did not wish to be identified.
A memorandum of understanding is b e i n g
t h e department and the council for this, the official said Capturing origin-destination pair-wise, commodity-wise, geographywise data is critical for accurate estimations. The department is also working on improving India’s ranking in the World Bank Logistics Performance Indexfrom38in2023tobelow25
The Government aims to come up with a methodology to address the twin
objectives of timely and robust measurements of logistic costs, and ways to reduce such costs by removing bottlenecks.
The survey will help shed light on logistics cost per tonne per kilometre on each of the routes under consideration and differential in logistics costs across routes, modes, products, types of cargo and service operations.
Origin-destination route surveys of selected products to obtain information on the relevant time and cost of t r a n s p o r t a t i o n a n d s t o r a g e , administrative bottlenecks at customs, warehouses and freight and forwarding agents, and ports are being deliberated, according to people in the know

NEW DELHI: India will lifted the ban on onion exports after about half a year, according to a notification from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. The move is expected to be a shot in the arm for traders in Maharashtra that accounts for a significant share of onion crops and it comes before the next
phases of Lok Sabha elections where several areas of the western state are set to go to polls.
While the prohibition for onion export has now been removed, DGFT has set the Minimum Export Price (MEP) for onion at $550 per tonne.
especially from Maharashtra, have been urging for the ban to be lifted, saying that it would assist farmers in obtaining better prices. However, the government had remained hesitant, fearing that the export of this crucial kitchen staple could lead to a surge in domestic prices.
