PM Modi urges Nordic Nations to invest in India’s Blue economy sector, including Sagarmala project COPENHAGEN: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, 4th May, invited Nordic companies to invest in the Blue Economy sector, including the Sagarmala project and asked the sovereign wealth funds of the Nordic countries to invest in India. As a part of Sagarmala Programme, more than 800 projects at an estimated cost of around Rs 5.48 lakh crore have been identified for implementation. Sagarmala projects include projects from various categories such as modernisation of existing ports and terminals, new ports, terminals, inland waterways, lighthouse tourism and skill development, etc. Cont’d. This summit saw the participation of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark, Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir of Iceland, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store of Norway, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson of Sweden and Prime Minister Sanna Marin of Finland. PM Modi and his counterparts from Nordic countries agreed to work together to fight and address climate change and protect the natural environment in accordance with the Paris Agreement.
The Summit provided an opportunity to review the progress of the India-Nordic relations since the 1st IndiaNordic Summit, which was held in 2018 in Stockholm. “Discussions were held on multilateral cooperation in post-pandemic economic recovery, climate change, sustainable development, innovation, digitalization, and green and clean growth. Discussions were also held on cooperation in maritime sector with a focus on sustainable ocean management. Prime Minister invited Nordic companies for investing in the Blue Economy sector, especially in India’s Sagarmala project,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a press release.
North-Eastern Region is the natural gateway for India to South-East Asia and beyond: President Kovind GUWAHATI: North-Eastern region is the natural gateway for India to South-East Asia and beyond, said the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind. He was addressing the valedictory function of North East Festival, organized by the Ministry of DoNER as a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, at Guwahati, Assam on May 4, 2022. The President said that with over 5,300 kilometres of international borders with several neighbouring countries, North-Eastern region has significant strategic value. With the launch of the Look East Policy (LEP), the security-centric approach towards neighbours in the east gave way to a prioritising of economic issues for benefiting from the common potential for economic growth across the region. In 2014, the LEP was upgraded to the Act East Policy (AEP) which brought about a paradigm shift and marked a significant change in the potential role of the North-East region.
The President said that he was happy to attend the valedictory function of North East Festival which is organized as a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. He congratulated Union Minister for DoNER, Governors and Chief Ministers of all the North-Eastern states as well as the people of the region for their enthusiastic participation. He said that he was impressed by their spirit of “Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahi”! The President stated that the North-Eastern region has immense inherent strengths. What it offers in terms of tourism, horticulture, handloom and sports is often unique. He said that efforts are needed now to place the North-Eastern states on par with the industrially advanced states so that more jobs are created here. Recognising this need, the Government is working with the states to improve their Ease of Doing Business parameters and to facilitate the flow of private investments into the North-East.

NEW DELHI: India’s Services exports set a new record of USD 254.4 Billion in the financial year 2021-2022. The new record achieved in 2021-22 beats the previous high of USD 213.2 Billion in 2019-20. Also, Services exports hit an alltime monthly high of USD 26.9 Billion in March 2022. Telecommunications, computer, and information services, other business services and Transport are the top contributors in Services exports during AprilDecember 2021 (latest available). India’s Merchandise exports had crossed USD 400 Billion milestone in Financial Year 2021-2022 and stood at USD 421.8 Billion which is a phenomenal increase of 44.6 percent and 34.6 percent over 2020-21 and 2019-20 respectively.

M o l l e r Maersk with growth across Ocean, Logistics and Terminals. The increased earnings are driven by freight rates and by contracts being signed at higher levels. While global supply chains remain under significant pressure, we continue to demonstrate superior ability to help customers overcome logistic challenges. In Logistics, we enjoyed strong demand for products and solutions across our portfolio leading to the 5th quarter in a row with organic growth of more than 30%. while Terminals presented its best quarter ever,” said, Mr. Søren Skou, CEO of A.P. Moller – Maersk. In Ocean, revenue increased 64% to USD 15.6bn during Q1 as strong rates more than offset a 7% decline in volumes. Revenue for the full year is expected to continue to be strong as the increase in freight rates on our long-term contract portfolio will add approximately USD 10bn to revenue in 2022 compared to 2021. This will more than offset the significant increase in costs, which were up 21% in the first quarter given higher fuel costs and inflationary pressure on network and container handling costs. In Q1, revenue in Logistics grew 41% to USD 2.9bn compared to same quarter last year as both existing and new customers continue to buy into the full value proposition of integrated solutions. At the same time Maersk continues to invest in acquisitions that add
capabilities within technology and e-commerce and strengthen the portfolio such as Pilot Freight Services, which closed on 2 May 2022. In Terminals, revenue increased to USD 1.1bn in Q1 compared to USD 915m last year and the return on invested capital (ROIC) ended on a record 12.5% before impairment in GPI of USD 485m following the exit of the Russian market. The process around the sale of GPI is ongoing. Results in Terminals are driven by higher storage income in NAM, improvement in revenue per move and a volume growth in the overall contracting market. Market situation and guidance for 2022 Freight rates remained elevated in Q1 as Covid-19 and capacity shortages continued to disrupt the supplyside of the logistics industry. Global container demand declined by 1.2% compared to +8% in 2021 while global air cargo volumes increased by 2.9%. Trade flow growth flattened from Far East to both North America and Europe. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is having a negative impact on trade flows and consumer confidence in Europe. Given this background, global container demand is now expected to grow -1/+1%, compared to an earlier expectation of 2-4%. As announced on 26 April 2022, Maersk anticipates an underlying EBITDA of around USD 30bn, an underlying EBIT of around USD 24bn and a free cash flow above USD 19bn for the full year of 2022. This is based on a strong first half of 2022 as well as higher contracted rates, while the normalisation in Ocean is still assumed to take place early in the second half of the year.
Höegh Autoliners : Strong Q1 results despite volatility & supply chain disruptions Cont’d. from Pg. 1 Adjusted EBITDA of USD 78 million, up 105% Y-o-Y. Net profit of USD 36 million, significantly up from negative USD 7 million in Q1 2021. Solid operational results further strengthened the balance sheet, with book equity ratio of 49% supported by increase in vessel values of 19% since year end 2021. In January 2022, the Company signed a contract with China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. (CMHI) to build the first four multi-fuel and zero carbon 9 100 CEU Aurora class vessels, with option for another eight vessels until July 2023 (as of May 2022, the option to build vessels 5 to 8 have been declared by the Company). The Company expects delivery of two Aurora vessels every six months starting from the second half of 2024. Fleet optimisation continued in the first quarter 2022 through disposal of three non-core smaller vessels and extension of charter party for two medium size vessels. Network size is planned to remain around 39-40 vessels in 2022. CEO of Höegh Autoliners, Andreas Enger, says : “I am very pleased with our first quarter results as well as the progress we have made on our strategic objectives, not least our continuous commitment to being the leader in zero emissions shipping. Extending our green fleet renewal program to eight zero carbon ready Aurora class vessels this quarter, with the possibility of ordering another eight, was a major step on our path to zero. At Höegh Autoliners we don’t just talk about sustainability and becoming green. We continue to act on it.”
Outlook The strong market fundamentals with tight supply demand balance and increased freight rates have continued into Q2. The sharp increase in bunker prices towards the end of Q1 will have negative impact in Q2 as the compensation (BAF) is delayed with 3-4 months. Geopolitical developments, in particular the conflict in Ukraine, COVID-19 lockdown in China and supply chain issues, are closely monitored. So far, we have not seen any financial impact on our business but due to limited visibility, this may change. Höegh Autoliners has a robust financial platform that will be further strengthened following the completion of the refinancing of the existing mortgage debt. On 2 May 2022, Höegh Autoliners’ shares were uplisted to the Oslo Stock Exchange’s main list. Based on current earnings outlook for 2022, the Company is considering commencing dividend payments in the second half of the year.

Stellar FY22 exports driven by petroleum, farm, metals NEW DELHI: India’s record exports of $422 billion in FY22 came on the back of stellar performance of key segments, such as petroleum products, chemicals, agriculture, base metals, electronics and gems & jewellery and textiles and garments, suggesting a broad-based resurgence after a Covid-induced slide in the previous fiscal. While a spike in global crude oil prices in FY22 boosted the export value of petroleum products by as much as 161% from a year before to $67 billion, latest disaggregated official data showed segments like agriculture and chemicals, including pharmaceuticals, witnessed record shipments of $50 billion and $56.3 billion, respectively, despite unfavourable base effect (these two segments had witnessed double-digit growth in FY21, defying the Covid impact). Farm exports were driven by a 273% surge in wheat exports to $2.1 billion, 27% rise in non-basmati shipments to $6.1 billion, showed the commerce ministry data. The chemicals segment recorded a 17% rise on higher shipments of agro, inorganic and organic chemicals, although bulk drugs and formulations exports barely grew, partly due to export curbs on select items. Importantly, buoyed by the performance of the steel and
aluminium sectors, exports of base metals surged 71% in the last fiscal to an all-time high of $47.2 billion. Exports of iron, steel and related products jumped 69% to $31.7 billion in FY22, while those of aluminium climbed 82% to $10.6 billion. Even copper exports shot up by 68% to $2.4 billion. Similarly, following a 28% slump in FY21, exports of gems and jewellery rebounded sharply in the last fiscal with a 50% jump to $39 billion. Exporters say the prospects of the gems and jewellery segment look bright in the current fiscal as well in the wake of India’s free trade agreement with a key market like the UAE. Electronics exports jumped 41% to a record $15 billion in FY22, supported by a 66% jump in despatches of telecom instruments, mainly mobile phones, to $7.7 billion. Exports of textiles, garment and allied products (including cotton) jumped 41% to $42.9 billion in FY22. India’s merchandise exports exceeded the ambitious target of $400 billion for FY22 nine days before the fiscal year was to end, surpassing the previous high by a wide margin. The exports finally hit $422 billion when the fiscal year came to an end, having jumped 46%, albeit aided by a conducive base (outbound shipments had contracted by close to 7% in FY21).

India exports 7 mn tonnes of sugar so far this marketing year; may touch new record of 9 mn: ISMA NEW DELHI: India, the world's second largest sugar producer after Brazil, has exported 7 million tonnes of the sweetener so far in the ongoing 2021-22 marketing year, and exports from the country may touch a new record of 9 million tonnes, industry body ISMA said recently. Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), in a statement, said the country's sugar output has risen to 34.23 million tonnes till April of the cur rent marketing year, from 30 million tonnes in the year-ago period. Sugar marketing year runs from October to September. The Country had exported a record 7.23 million tonnes of the sweetener in the 2020-21 marketing year with much of the shipments undertaken with the help of Government subsidy.
"As per reports from the trade, around 8.2-8.3 million tonnes of sugar export have been contracted for so far. Out of that, about 6.8-7 million tonnes of sugar is estimated to have been physically exported from India up to April," ISMA said. Accordingly, it is estimated that the "Indian sugar industry should be able to export over 9 million tonnes," it said. The sugar being exported this year is without the Government subsidies. On sugar production, ISMA said it has risen by 14 per cent to 34.23 million tonnes during the October-April period of the 2021-22 marketing year, from over the year-ago period.
Amazon doubles cumulative export target from India to $20 billion by 2025 BANGALORE: E-commerce company Amazon expects cumulative exports from its platform in India to reach USD 20 billion by 2025, a senior company official said recently. In January 2020, the company had set a target to facilitate export worth USD 10 billion by 2025. "In January 2020, we had taken a pledge to enable USD 10 billion in cumulative exports from India by 2025 with our global Selling program. "Excited by the momentum in businesses joining the global selling program and by the growing demand for Made in India products across the world, I am super excited to announce that we are doubling down and raising our pledge to enable USD 20 billion in cumulative exports by 2025," Amazon Senior Vice President for India and Emerging Markets Amit Agarwal said.
"The Government had set an ambitious target of achieving USD 400 billion in annual merchandise exports and for the first time in history, India has breached this target. India's merchandise exports touched a record USD 418 billion in 2021-22. The Government's unwavering commitment towards exports has been very encouraging," Agarwal said. Amazon has launched the e-commerce export programme Global Selling in 2015, which has over 1 lakh exporters. "At our end, we are super excited by the momentum Amazon Global Selling is witnessing; the exporters on the program are on track to surpass USD 5 billion in cumulative exports. Importantly, the program took about 3 years to enable the first billion dollars in exports, while the last 2 billion have come in just 17 months," Agarwal said.
Schedule Reliability improves in March, says Sea-Intelligence Despite being the highest 2022 reliability figure so far, the score is s ll slightly below the 2021 level COPENHAGEN: Global schedule reliability continues to slowly inch upwards, recording a marginal month-on-month improvement again with the March 2022 figure reaching 35.9%. Despite being the highest 2022 reliability figure so far, the March score is still slightly below the 2021 level, according to the latest update from Sea-Intelligence. "The average delay for LATE vessel arrivals declined again, this time by 0.32 days, to 7.26 days in March. Despite the improvement, the average delay figure has now been over 7 days since August 2021, and continues to be the highest across each month when compared historically." With a schedule reliability of 50.3 percent, Maersk was the only carrier with a score of over 50 percent, followed by
Hamburg Süd with 45.9 percent. There were seven carriers with schedule reliability of 30-40 percent and five with schedule reliability of 20-30 percent. Wan Hai had the lowest schedule reliability in March 2022 of 22.6 percent. "On a Y/Y level, only three of the top-14 carriers recorded an improvement in schedule reliability in March 2022 with the largest improvement of just 1.6 percentage points." The analysis by Sea-Intelligence overs schedule reliability across 34 different trade lanes and 60+ carriers.
Indian Govt may impose temporary ban on cotton export MUMBAI: The next 3-4 months may be difficult for the Indian textile sector due to limited availability of cotton in the Country. In such a scenario, the government may temporarily ban export of cotton if prices continue to rise, Upendra Prasad Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, has given indications for the same, but there is no timeline from the Government. The textile industry had been demanding the removal of duty on import of cotton for several month, for which the Government finally agreed and removed around 11 per cent duty in mid-April. Immediately after the removal of duty, ICE cotton recorded a sharp rise on the prospects of India’s higher import. In addition, the fear of drought in US’s Texas state
also contributed to lifting of ICE cotton prices. Taking cue from global prices, domestic cotton prices in India also surged. Thus, instead of softening, cotton prices increased immediately after duty cut. Industry associations had complained the two-month delay in arriving at the decision of import duty cut led to increase in price from Rs. 60,000-70,000 per candy of 356 kg to Rs. 95,000 per candy. Recently, Singh told reporters that cotton prices are unlikely to soften until October when the new crop will arrive. As a result, the textile industry will have to face exorbitant cotton prices and limited supply in the global market.

MSC overtakes Maersk on Asia-Europe Trade Lanes : Alphaliner LONDON: In terms of tonnage deployed, MSC has overtaken its 2M partner Maersk. The shipping giant led by Soren Toft, last month deployed 1.02 mn TEUs of capacity on the Asia-Europe trade lane, representing 18.7% of all TEUs slots on the route. Evergreen and CMA CGM have led the capacity growth over the past 12 months on this main east-west trade lane, adding respectively 147,500 and 118,700 TEUs slots. This in turn has seen the OCEAN Alliance surpass 2M as the largest grouping on the trade. While there have been many headlines about new entrants onto this tradelane in recent months, the actual numbers of new names are minimal when compared with the transpacific. Alphaliner reports
the fleet of all newcomers stood in April at 25 ships with a combined capacity of 64,700 TEUs or just 1.2% of the market. The average vessel size of these ships was less than 2,600 TEUs, which compares to an average of 15,600 TEUs for the whole fleet on this trade route. Overall, citing April data, Alphaliner counted 348 containerships deployed between Asia and Europe, representing a total capacity of 5.45 mn TEUs, which is an increase of 10.4% compared to April last year. While Maersk might have lost its lead on this tradelane and in the overall global rankings this year, it has recently overtaken CMA CGM and COSCO as the largest tonnage operator on the transpacific.
APSEZ crosses record 28 MMT throughput in April MUMBAI: APSEZ Ports handled a cargo volume of 28.64 MMT in April 2022 as against 24.46 MMT in April 2021, a y-o-y growth of 17%. Coal volumes bounced back and registered a 23% y-o-y growth, while agriculture cargo and fertiliser handling saw a 350% increase y-o-y. Last month, the Government of India had announced that the
Country is likely to see record wheat export this financial year. China’s decision to cap its steel production has boosted India’s steel industry, which is reflected in the 35% y-o-y jump in coking coal volume at APSEZ ports. Overall, April was the second consecutive month with cargo volumes crossing the record level of 28 MMT, highlighted a release.
Ocean Network Express posts record Profits of $16.8 bn in FY‘22 SINGAPORE - Ocean carrier ONE has reported a record net profit of US$16.8 billion for its financial year ending March 31 - but for the full-year 2022, its outlook is beset with uncertainties. Overall, liftings were flat, at 12.1 million TEU, mainly due to port congestion on the US west coast, which saw volumes from Asia to North America plunge by 412,000 TEU, to 2.35 million TEU. However, this reduction in liftings on the transpacific was mitigated by increased carryings on other trades, including 156,000 more TEU on headhaul Asia to Europe routes, to reach 1.71 million TEU. ONE's revenue soared by 109 per cent on the previous year, to $30.1 billion, for an average rate of $2,495 per TEU, on the back of continued high spot rates and "significant" increases in its long-term contracts. This produced an EBIT of $17.2 billion and a net profit of $16.8 billion, compared with a net of $3.5 billion for the previous year.
"Despite the impact of seasonal factors, including the Chinese New Year, Russia-Ukraine hostilities and China's recent lockdown, the strong cargo demand continued through January to March," said ONE. CEO Jeremy Nixon lauded the per for mance, particularly the fact that the carrier's EBIT margin was "ahead of ONE's competitor industry peer group". Nevertheless, he was less bullish on the outlook, saying: "It remains cautious, as there are still many trading uncertainties ahead in addition to further expected economic headwinds." He also expressed concern regarding cost increases, which, for example, saw ONE's average bunker price soar 54 per cent during the period, to $512/tonne. "Additionally, there is still a strong need for further investment in decarbonisation and digitalisation over the course of 2022 and beyond," said Mr Nixon. ONE said it was "extremely difficult to announce a reasonable business forecast for the coming financial year" and that its forecasts were "yet to be finalised".
