Duqm Port development deal with Adani Group is open : Oman ofcial

M U S C AT : O m a n i s h i g h l y optimistic about Indian investments in the country, particularly in the development of the Duqm Port by the AD Group, an Oman official said.

Saleh Hamood Al Hasani, advisor to the Chairman of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones in O m a n , h i g h l i g h t e d M u s c a t ’ s ‘ w e l c o m i n g ’ s t a n c e t o w a r d s investments by the Adani Group A l t h o u g h a m e m o r a n d u m o f understanding has been signed, c o n c r e t e p l a n s h a v e n o t y e t materialised.

During the “Invest in Oman” event in Muscat, discussions were held

representatives, which also included visits to Adani’s office in India and the Duqm port site in Oman.

Speaking on the sidelines of the “Invest in Oman” event, an advisor to the Chairman of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones in Oman said, “An Omani delegation has visited the Adani office in India for detailed discussions for port development. A delegation from the Oman side also visited the Adani headquarters.”

When asked if there are any obstacles to the development of the Duqm port project, Al Hasani clarified that the Omani side is

exploring opportunities to attract development

“The deal with Adani is open and we do not close any doors with anyone. We are here to explore o p p o r t u n i t i e s t o b r i n g m o r e d e v e l o p m e n t f r o m d i f f e r e n t countries,” he told.

“India is our strong partner… We are still interested and hope that the Adani management will take a decision and hopefully, we will be able to put things together,” he added.

Earlier, several Indian top officials, including the Indian Ambassador to Oman, Amit Narang and the Navy Chief, R Hari Kumar, among others, visited the Duqm Port.

QUESTION: What is the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) concept? What are the advantages and Disadvantages of MFN? How disadvantages of MFN can be reduced within the boundaries of WTORules?

SOLUTION: You have asked a very fundamental question and most people see the effect in day-to-day life but many times are not aware of the origins.

The Most Favored Nation (MFN) rule is a fundamental principle in various agreements under the World Trade Organization (WTO), particularly in the GeneralAgreementonTariffsandTrade(GATT).

The MFN principle is explicitly articulated in Article I oftheGATT,whichstates:

" With respect to customs duties and charges of any kindimposedonorinconnectionwithimportationor exportation or imposed on the international transfer of payments for imports or exports, and with respect to the method of levying such duties and charges, and with respect to all rules and formalities in connection with importation and exportation, and with respect to all matters referred to in paragraphs 2 and 4 of Article III, any advantage, favour, privilege or immunity granted by any contracting party to any product originating in or destined for any other country shall be accorded immediately and unconditionally to the like product originatinginordestinedfortheterritoriesofallother contractingparties.

Article I of the GATT mandates that any advantage or preferentialtreatmentgrantedtotheproductsofone country must be extended immediately and unconditionally to the like products of all other WTO member countries. This ensures non-discriminatory treatmentininternationaltraderelations.

In trade terms, if you give a specific trade benefit (like lower tariffs or taxes) to one country, you have to offer thesamebenefittoallothercountriesyoutradewith.

Example: Imagine you have a club where members get discounts on drinks. If you give one member a special discount, the MFN rule would require you to give that same special discount to allother members ofthe club.

Union Govt launches mission to boost oilseeds’ production and to reduce imports of cooking oils

GOGAMUKH: Union Agriculture Minister Shri Arjun Munda has said the Government has launched a mission to boost production of oilseeds and reduce imports of cooking oils.

According to an official statement, M u n d a s a i d P r i m e M i n i s t e r Shri Narendra Modi has special emphasis on the development of the Northeastern region.

He said the Government has done the work of eliminating the gaps in the development of agriculture in the northeastern states and bringing them into the mainstream Munda said the Government is working with the resolve to make the country a developed nation by 2047, in which the role of agriculture is very important.

He highlighted that a mission of Rs 11,000 crore is being run to reduce

the burden of edible oil imports and become self-reliant in oilseeds.

“We have to work with the thought that in the coming days, we will not import but export,” Munda said India imports about 16 million tonnes of edible oils annually to meet domestic demand. In terms of value, India imported edible oils worth about Rs 1 38 lakh crore during 2022-23 (November-October).

NEW DELHI: India’s economy has become more robust and resilient and growth is strengthening quarter after quarter; the Q3 growth at 8.4% indicate a strong growth trajectory to continue in the coming quarters too, s a i d M r. S a n j e e v A g r a w a l , President, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in a press statement issued here.

Manufacturing, construction and electricity sectors have become the major growth drivers in the recent quarters, said Mr Sanjeev Agrawal.

The overall real GDP growth projected at 7.6% in 2023-24 is highest

among the leading economies, said Mr Sanjeev Agrawal.

The manufacturing sector has grown at 11.6% in Q3 2023-24 on the back of strategic reforms and prudent policy measures by the government a n d e f f o r t s o f i n d u s t r y, s a i d Mr Sanjeev Agrawal.

The consistent growth in the construction sector at 9 5% is indicating the creation of new employment as the construction sector absorbs skilled, semi skilled and unskilled chunks of workforce, said Mr Sanjeev Agrawal.

High growth in the electricity, gas,

water supply & other utility services at 9% is inspiring as this will boost the manufacturing activities in the economy, said Mr Agrawal.

The services sector growing at a steady pace of more than 7% is inspiring, displaying that India’s growth momentum will continue, said Mr. Agrawal.

The gross fixed capital formation at 32.4% of GDP for Q3 2023-24, higher than 31 8% in 2022-23 for Q3, is indicating steady capacity expansion for more employment opportunities in the coming times, said Mr Sanjeev Agrawal.

FIATA partners with World Logistics Passport to strengthen and facilitate Global Trade

NEW DELHI: Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Tr a d e ( D P I I T ) , M i n i s t r y o f Commerce and Industry organised a LEAPS (Logistics Excellence, Advancement, and Performance Shield) Valedictory Session in New Delhi. VPA signs pact to incorporate Trafc Management System Services

India, Indonesia bright spots for investment opportunities: BlackRock

NEW YORK: US investment firm BlackRock sees India and Indonesia as two Asia-Pacific countries offering a lot of investment opportunities, its head of research for the region said.

Research, at an investment forum in Jakarta said the two emerging market countries were advantageous due to their large populations.

"Because of large population, large markets, thriving democracy, these are two countries which kind of

stand out where there is a lot of investor focus and attention going in," he said.

He added, however, that India and Indonesia need to deepen their financial markets, including equity and currency markets.

Reconsider 5% Customs duty on newsprint, INS appeals to Govt

NEW DELHI: The Indian Newspaper Society (INS) has appealed to the government to reconsider the imposition of five per cent customs duty on newsprint. The measure will come as much-needed relief to the print media industry, said the organisation, w h i c h c o u n t s n e w s p a p e r s , periodicals and magazines across the country as its members INS said the factors affecting the price and availability of newsprint geopolitical uncertainties, logistics, rupee depreciation and customs duty have created a formidable burden for publishers in the country.

The escalations in West Asian conflicts, as well as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine,

have significantly affected the global supply chain, including for newsprint, the organisation said in a statement.

“Coupled with the Red Sea issue, where cargo ships are being continuously targeted, has further exacerbated the situation, leading to disruptions in the transportation of essential commodities, including n e w s p r i n t R e s u l t a n t l y, t h e newsprint suppliers are cancelling the earlier confirmed orders of the publishers,” the statement says.

The INS said many newsprint mills in India and abroad have either suspended or ceased production, sparking supply concerns. The fluctuating currency exchange rates contribute to the rising costs of importing newsprint,

straining the financial viability of newspapers and publications, it said.

The statement says that the survival of print media is crucial for the largest democracy in the world, as newspapers not only serve as a vital medium for disseminating knowledge and information at low and affordable costs to the people b u t a l s o c o n t r i b u t e t o t h e government’s efforts to inform citizens about policies and social welfare programmes.

“In an era of widespread online misinformation, print media retains a commendable level of trust and credibility, distinguishing itself t h r o u g h r e l i a b l e e d i t o r i a l s , comprehensive reporting, and widespread readership,” it reads.

Over 1,000 Amrit Bharat trains to be made in coming years : Ashwini Vaishnaw

NEW DELHI : Railway Minister ShriAshwiniVaishnaw has said that India will be manufacturing at least 1,000 new-generation Amrit Bharat trains in the following years He highlighted ongoing efforts to develop trains capable of operating at speeds reaching 250 kmph.

Vaishnaw mentioned that the

Railways has initiated the process for exporting Vande Bharat trains He expressed optimism that the nation could witness its inaugural export within the next five years.

On the topic of affordability, Vaishnaw said that India has designed a world-class Amrit Bharat train “It provides 1,000 km of travel at a

price of only Rs 454. That is the kind of affordability that has been provided,” he said. He highlighted the popularity of Vande Bharat trains among the youth. “Practically, every week one Vande Bharat is getting inducted into the fleet. We will be manufacturing at least 400 to 500 of these trains in the coming few years,” he added.
