Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal : Operation commences from Feb 10th

Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal(NSFT), which is jointly managed by JM Baxi and CMA Terminals, has announced that the operations at the terminal of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) will commence from 10th February 2023. The Container Terminal will begintoacceptexportcontainersfrom6thFebruary

NSFT is revamping the existing Container Terminal JNPCT in two phases and is expected to be fully completedbythefourthquarterof2024.

Initially,NFSTwillbeoperatingonberthof340meters with5quaycranesforhandlingcontainervesselsandwill be subsequently strengthened further. The remaining berth area will be increase the rail span from the current 20metersto30meters.

Indiahasatotalof226Portswhich comprise 12 Major Ports. At present, there are 87 operational / under implementation ports which are being considered for assessment in terms of connectivity or capacity augmentation.

For improving first/ last mile connectivitytoallMajor&Non-Major Ports of the Country specifically the operational/ under implementation ports, 55 port connectivity and associated hinterland projects with a total length of 2,779 km have already been initiated by the Ministry and its implementing agencies. As of now, 8

projects of length 294 km have been completed, 14 projects of length 1,645 km are under implementation, 13 projects of length 363 km are under bidding and 20 projects of length 476 km are yet to be awarded. Post completion of these projects, 45 maritime ports will be provided with National Highway or 4 Lane+ connectivity.

MoRTH is working to enhance the ports logistics ecosystem by connecting Major & Minor Ports with National Highways, with NHLML spearheading this endeavour. The programme has been envisioned to connect all Major Ports, Non-Major

Ports as well as inland waterway terminals in the country to create an integratednetworktosupportefficient andunhinderedfreightmovement.

As many as 52 critical infrastructure gap projects identified by MoPSW for connecting Maritime Ports and IWTs (Inland Waterway Terminals) to be taken up under PMGatiShaktiNationalMasterPlan. Currently, DPR of total 56 projects (including11IWTprojects)underthis category with total of 1215 km length are under bidding stage for the feasibility assessment of these projects,whichisbeingcarriedoutby NHAI.

35 MMLPs planned under Bharatmala with an investment of Rs.46,000 crores

NEW DELHI: As part of the yearend review, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways reviewed the planning and development of MultimodalLogisticsParks(MMLP).

The Ministry finalized the Model Concessionaire Agreement (MCA) fortheMMLPstobedevelopedunder the Bharatmala Pariyojana in October 2021 through an elaborate process of inter-Ministerial consultations. The document serves as the Developer Agreements / Concession Agreements for the individual MMLP projects under the Pariyojana. In addition to the MCA,

the Ministry, in November 2021, also finalized and approved the Model RFP document of selection of Concessionaire for development of MMLPs.

A network of 35 Multimodal Logistics Parks is planned to be developed as part of Bharatmala Pariyojana, with a total investment of about Rs 46,000 crore, which once operational, shall be able to handle around 700 million metric tonnes of cargo. Of this, MMLPs at 15 prioritizedlocationswillbedeveloped with a total investment of about Rs 22,000Crore.

These Multi-Modal Logistics Parks shall serve as regional cargo aggregation and distribution hubs for various industrial and agricultural nodes, consumer hubs and Export Import gateways such as seaports with multi-modal connectivity. In certain cases, the MMLPs are also being developed in tandem with the Inland Waterway Terminals under the Sagarmala Pariyojana to further reduce the cost of inland cargo movement at a much larger scale as compared to conventional road-based movement.

Two Major Ports in Chennai handled 3.64 lakh vehicles in CY 2022

CHENNAI:ThetwoMajorPortsin Chennai collectively facilitated the export of almost 3.64 lakh vehicles to variouscountriesduringthecalendar year (CY) 2022, recording an increase of26%year-on-year.

While Chennai Port Trust (ChPT) exported 2.23 lakh cars, mostly those made by Hyundai Motor India, against 1.65 lakh units in CY21, Kamarajar Port Ltd. (KPL) shipped 1.41lakhvehicles(1.25lakh).

With the present numbers, the car export volumes from ChPT had crossed the 2,00,000 mark once again, while that of KPL declined from a similar level on account of COVID-19, said a leading logistics provider.

“Therehasbeenanincreaseincar exports from Chennai Port. Some of the automobile firms have signed long-termcontractswithusandsome are coming up for renewals,” said Sunil Paliwal, Chairman, ChPT and CMDofKPL inaninterview.

He also said that recently Maruti Suzuki had entered into a pact with KPLtoexportabout20,000passenger vehicles annually to various destinations such as Africa, Middle East, Latin America, ASEAN and SAARCregions.

During the year, Nissan and Renault exported 81,000 vehicles from KPL, followed by Ford India 28,400, Isuzu Motors 17,400, Daimler India 5,800, Toyota Kirloskar 105 and

others 8,000 units. In the case of ChPT, Hyundai Motor has a longterm contract and exported about 1,45,300 vehicles followed by Kia Motors India 76,910 and Ford India 555unit.

Till a few years back, there was stiff competition between ChPT and KPLintermsofexportsandthelatter had an upper hand. But things changed after the acquisition of KPL by ChPT and due to COVID. Both the portsarenowheadedbythesameIAS officer.

From January to December, 47 Roll-on Roll-off (RORO) vessels visited ChPT. In the month of December, it handled as many as 26,000cars.

Looking Back at 2022

Last year was a year in which I gradually felt the normalization of economic activity and social life from the COVID-19 pandemic. Travel restrictions have been eased almost all over the world, which means we are free to make overseas business trips. Personally, I have taken opportunities to travel overseas since last year, and I was eager to see some of the changes taking place in the world, by exchanging opinions with government officials and businessleadersinvariouscountries.Iencourageeveryone to take advantage of opportunities to communicate directly with customers, business partners, colleagues in MOL group, and others in your business circle and offer constructiveopinionsaboutthefutureofourgroup.

Last year was also a time when the world economy and society were widely and severely affected by the war of Russia and Ukraine since February. Disruptions in supply chains, soaring energy and grain prices, global inflation, and so on—turmoil continues in a variety of fields. Some companies decided to withdraw from Russia-related business, but our group will continue to offer stable transport services, placing the highest priority on securing the safety of crewmembers, cargo, and vessels, as a company that develops a social infrastructure business centered on ocean shipping, transporting commodities essential to people's lives. Considering about strategic importance of energy supply under current circumstances, we will continue our energy transport business, mainly LNG, from Russia, as long as we can, and this is also in line with the direction of the Japanese government'spolicy.Ofcourse,atthesametimeIpraythat the situation will be brought to an end as soon as possible and that the people of Ukraine will return to safety andpeace.

We expect to achieve record high profits for the current fiscal year, benefiting from strong demand for ocean going shippingandtheaccompanyingsurgeinmarketrates,aswe did in the previous fiscal year. On the other hand, freight rates have already begun to decline in some segments, especially container segment, as logistics disruption is coming to an end with the normalization of society. The shipping market is always volatile, and we expect a reversal in market conditions. The global economy is in an overall downtrend, and we have also had to prepare for future market downturns. Regarding our favorable performance for this fiscal year, I believe it was the result of you and your team's efforts to reform its operations and business structure since the COVID-19 pandemic, and to hone its competitiveness. I would like to once again express myappreciationforallofMOLgroupstaff'sefforts.

Outlook for 2023

Looking ahead to the businessenvironmentin 2023, since China announced a review of its zero-COVID policy at the end of last year, I believe the nearly three-year-long turmoil caused by COVID-19 will be over, and the world economy and society will gradually normalize. In the last two years, we have achieved fantastic financial results against the backdrop of a soaring shipping market. But due to the global inflation that has been rising since last year, high interest rates, and the resulting economic downturn, weexpectourprofitsforthenextfiscalyeartobelowerthan inFY2021andFy2022.

This year, we may see the impact of inflationary measures in the U.S. and Europe, and a significant but temporary downturn in the economy, however, we expect a return to a moderate expansionary trend in the not-toodistant future, as the Chinese economy normalizes and the paceofU.S.interestratehikesslows.Weintendforthisyear to be one in which we effectively use the capital we have accumulated over the past two years to prepare for deteriorating financial result and to invest for our future growth.

Organizational restructuring measures

Next, I will touch upon the new organization and structure announced in December 2022. This year's reorganization will be a major one. I want to share two key pointswithyou.

Thefirstistocreateastructurethatcanpowerfullypush our regional strategies, one of the group's main strategies. To expand our overseas regional business, the group will be broadly re-grouped into "corporate organizations", "business organizations", and "regional organizations", each of which will mutually collaborate and cooperate with appropriate checks and balances put in place. As a business execution system to support this organizational structure, the "corporate organizations" will introduce a Chief Officer system to address group-wide management issues related to corporate functions, including strengthening group governance.

In addition, an executive officer responsible for regions, dedicated to "regional organizations" will be assigned in each region to promote business development and operation in "regional organizations". Another essential issue in driving regional strategies is to speed up the decision-making process for specific business projects, particularly for new investments. To this end, it is essential to delegate authority to "regional organizations" and detaileddiscussionsarecurrentlyunderway.

Finally, I want to pledge my commitment to safe voyages for all MOL Group-operated vessels. I wish you and your families a very happy New Year, as well as good health, happiness,success,andprosperity.

Indian exports will be moderately impacted by weak global demand in 2023: GTRI

NEW DELHI: The Indian economy and exports will be moderatelyimpactedin2023byweak global demand and recession in large economies and to improve its current account, the country should aim at reducing energy import bill, economic think tank GTRI said on Tuesday.TheGlobalTradeResearch Initiative (GTRI) said that in 2022, India will pay USD 270 billion in imports of crude oil and coal, which is about 40 per cent of total merchandiseimportbill.

“India must re-energize exploration of local oil fields and enhance production through coal mines. Any development will cut the energy import bill substantially and improve the current account,” it added. It also said the US effort to create alternate supply chains excludingChinaisgraduallyleadingto restructuring of global supply chains

and relocation of few large manufacturing firms shows that India isinagoodpositiontobenefitfromthis trend.

India should do so without compromisingitsstrategicautonomy, it said adding that in various free trade agreements (FTAs) under negotiations, India should carefully evaluatetheimpactofnewprovisions on domestic policies. Developed countries including the US and the EU use such provisions in creating non-tariff barriers against exports frompartnercountries.

Talking about the outlook for 2023, it said “The Indian economy and exports will be moderately impacted byweakglobaldemandandrecession in large economies. To improve its current account, it should aim to cut energy import bill”. On trade data, it said India’s exports are expected to touch USD 440-450 billion in 2022

despite the global uncertainties as againstUSD395billionin2021.

India’s merchandise imports are also likely to be around USD 725 billion in 2022, higher than USD 573 billion in 2021.“India is set to achieve the highest ever export turnover in 2022. Its total (merchandise and services) export turnover will be in the range of USD 740-750 billion. This calls for celebrations as the achievement comes despite gloomy conditions worldwide. Merchandise exports are expected to be in the range of USD 440-450 billion,” it said. Services exports are expected to be USD 295-300 billion in 2022 as comparedtoUSD254billionin2021.

The Commerce Ministry, which releases the trade data, has so far released the data till November 2022. In January-November 2022, merchandise exports crossed USD 405billion.

theGDPwillbeapproachingcloseto20 trillionUSDollarstoo.India,therefore, will be a transformed society," a press release from the varsity quoting Debroysaid.

Remarking that basic necessities have been provided to the people and more so in the rural areas by the government, he said the economic indicators after the COVID have improved in India. Everyone is now looking to see the rate of growth in 2023-24 andthegrowthofeconomyby 2047.

According to him, India may witness volatilities in forex markets and capital markets and exchange ratesduetosomeoftheuncertainties around the world such as RussiaUkraine conflict, growth prospects in EuropeandtheUSA.

Debroy opined that India

needs need a simplified GST and direct tax as these are the areas on which everybody should think and the research that helps in making policy decisions much informed.

PlastIndia urges Centre to lower import duty on polymer

NEW DELHI: PlastIndia Foundation (a body of the major association, organizations, and institutions connected with plastics) has asked the Government to lower import duty on polymer and increase the custom duty on finished plastic productsintheUnionBudget2023-24.

In his pre-budget expectations for the plastic and polymer industry, Jigish Doshi, President of PlastIndia Foundation, said the import duty on polymer should

be between 5-7.5 per cent.

Statingthatimportisinevitableas India does not produce enough polymer, he said import duty needs to be lowered to make the Indian plastic industrymorecompetitive.

Custom duty on the finished plastic product should be a minimum of 20 per cent or more to support the domestic plastic processing industry, hesaid.

Stating that the Government is focusing on renewable energy,

Doshi said this presents an opportunity for the plastic industry. However,atpresent90percentofthe components for solar panels and windmills are imported and the productsareonlyassembledinIndia.

To encourage the local manufacturers, the Custom duty on theimportofcomponentsshouldbeat least 20 per cent. He said the plastic industrycanplayanimportantrolein manufacturing of some of the components.
