Adani Ports hits record quarterly cargo volumes, jumps 11.5% in Q1 FY24

AHMEDABAD:

India’s largest private port operator Adani Ports and Special EconomicZonehasset a new record on quarterly volumes, by handling more than 101 MMT of cargo in the first quarter of the financialyear2023-24.

The market heavyweight announced on Monday that its total cargo volumes reported a strong 11.5% growth on a year-on-year basis

and clocked an approximately 101.4 MMT during the April to June 2023 period.

Growth was observed across most ports, along with all the three broad cargo segments of Adani Ports, with the Container segment witnessing a 19% growth YoY, the Liquids & Gas segment growing by 7% YoY, and Dry Bulk segment showing a growth of 7% on a YoY basisinQ1FY24.

The Adani giant informed on July

3, 2023, that the company handled approximately 32.8 MMT of cargo in the month of June 2023 alone, which included almost 1 MMT at its port in Haifa,Israel.

Further, the company’s logistics volume also continued to record a significant jump in the June quarter, with the year-to-date (YTD) rail volumes surging by 18% YoY to 131,420 TEUs, and the GPWIS volumesgrowingbyasharp40%jump at4.35MMT.

Govt constructing 10,000 km greenfield expressway projects at Rs 4.5 lakh crore investment: Nitin Gadkari

NEW DELHI: The government is constructing several greenfield expressway projects totalling 10,000 km across the country at a cost of Rs 4.5 lakh crore, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari said. He said that theroadnetworkisbeingsetupunder theBharatmalaPariyojana.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has generated more than Rs 70,000 crore through various models of financing and the amount will be utilsed to build highway projects,henoted.

“The Government has conceptualized Bharatmala Pariyojna of 65,000 km of highway development across the country. The phase 1 road

network is of 34,800 km. We are constructing 10,000 km of greenfield expressways at a cost of Rs 4.5 lakh crore,” he said addressing an event on ‘Management Development Program on Infrastructure Financing’ organisedbyIIMKozhikode.

According to the minister, India’s total National Highway (NH) network has increased from 91,000 km in 2014 tonearly1.45lakhkmatpresent.

Gadkari further said the governmenthasgivenamassivepush to the economy through the national infrastructure pipeline and PM Gati ShaktiNationalmasterplan.

These programs will ensure integrated and holistic development in the country saving cost and time as

these new infra projects will connect remoteareasinthecountry.

“Asset monetization holds the key to infrastructure investment. NHAI has the share of 27 per cent under the national monetization pipeline. We are actually pursuing multiple models of monetization of national highways assets such ToT InVIT and project-based financing,” the ministersaid.

NHAI has generated more than Rs 70,000 crore through innovative modelsoffinancing.AroundRs26,000 crore raised via ToT (toll-operatetransfer) model, Rs 10,000 crore via NHAI InVIT (National Highways Infra Trust) and Rs 34,000 crore via securitizationviaSPVs.

China’s Container Port handle 122 million TEUs in Jan – May

BEIJING:TheportsinChinahave achieved positive growth both in container and cargo throughput duringthefirstfivemonthsofthisyear.

From January to May, China’s portspostedacontainervolumeof122 million TEUs, an increase of 4.8% year-on-year; cargo throughput was 6.75billiontons,agrowthrateof7.9%.

UN Chief urges Maritime Nations to Chart Course for Net Zero Shipping Emissions by 2050

LONDON:TheHeadoftheUnited Nations called Monday for maritime nations to agree on a course for the shipping industry to reduce its climate-harming emissions to net zero by the middle of the century at thelatest.

The appeal by U.N. SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres came at the start of a meeting of the International Maritime Organization in London that’s seen as key for helpingachievetheinternationalgoal

of limiting global warming to 1.5 degreesCelsius(2.7Fahrenheit).

“Shipping, which accounts for almost 3% of global emissions, will be vital,”Guterressaid.

Heurgeddelegatestoagreeanew greenhouse gas strategy for shipping that includes “ambitious sciencebased targets starting in 2030 – both onabsoluteemissionsreductionsand theuseofcleanfuels.”

TheIMO’scurrenttargetisforthe shipping industry to cut its emissions

byatleasthalffrom2008to2050.

Guterres said the new targets should include all greenhouse gas emissions caused by the industry and backed the idea of introducing a carbon price for shipping. Campaigners have suggested that funds generated from a levy on emissions could be used to help poor nationstackleclimatechange,though the industry wants the money to go toward the development of clean technologies.

NEW DELHI: The disinvestment of Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) has picked up pace in the last few weeks and the governmentisexpectedto invite initial bids for the state-owned transporter byAugust1,multiplesourcestold.

“AM (Alternative Mechanism) approval has been sought for CONCOREOI(expressionsofintent). The three ministers’ file has been sent and approval will be sought.

DIPAM (Department of Investment and Public Asset Management) has giventhego-ahead.Dependingonthe approval, immediately EOIs will be issued,” a Senior Government official said.

disinvestmentconsistsoftheFinance Minister, Minister for Road Transport and Highways and the Minister representing the respective administrative department, to decide on the matters relating to terms and conditionsofthesale.

The alternative mechanism for CONCOR comprises ministers of finance,roadtransportandhighways, andrailways.

“Issues of the railway ministry have been addressed and railways is willing to go ahead with CONCOR EOIs, which is likely in a month’s time,” theofficialsaid.

CONCOR is in constant dialogue with 4-5 potential investors for its disinvestment and a meeting between the government and interestedpartiesisbeingplannedfor thefirstweekofAugust,sourcessaid.

“Two more parties have shown strong interest in the government’s stake in CONCOR,” an another executivesaid.

Based on the company’s current market capitalisation, the 30.8 percent stake earmarked for sale is wortharoundRs12,000crore.

SHANGHAI: CEVA Logistics recently launched a new international road transport (TIR) route along the ChinaKyrgyzstan-Uzbekistancorridor,openingnewtraderoutes in China and central Asia. The opening of the new route is expected to boost trade growth among the three countries anddeliverbenefitsacrosstheregion.

CEVA Logistics held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the launch of the new route as the shipment convoy of six trucks departed from western China’s inland city of Kashgar, crossing into Kyrgyzstan. Loaded with industrialcomponents,autopartsandconsumergoods,the first TIR trucks on the new route successfully arrived in Uzbekistan’s second-largest city, Samarkand, after approximately1,100kilometers.

Joanna Zhu, Managing Director of Greater China, CEVA Logistics, said: “With the successful pilot, CEVA is expecting more regular TIR operations on this new route with around 100 trucks every month. CEVA will continue to optimize ground and rail product portfolios to open direct routeswhilestrengtheningintermodalcapabilities.Wewill develop more trade lanes from China to the west and enhancetraderesiliencealongthecorridor.”

SouthernCorridorfacilitatesregionaltrade

Central Asia is the main passage along the Han-Tang Silk Road. The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Ground Transportation Corridor is concrete example of China’s "Belt and Road" initiative. The opening of a southern passage has the capacity to change the entire transportation pattern of Western China. The southern corridorisexpectedtobroadenthetransportationrangeof the Eurasian Continental Bridge. As more logistics parks settleinKashgar,exportcompaniesshippinggoodssuchas

auto parts, finished vehicles, and consumer and eCommerce goods will greatly benefit from the new route. As the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan route becomes more established, CEVA anticipates making Kashgar a ground consolidationcenterforWesternChina.

In addition to the TIR solution, CEVA continues to explore and strengthen its multimodal solutions and open new direct routes as infrastructure in the region develops. Current plans call for the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway to be completed in 2025 and will make it the shortest freight route from China to the Middle East and Europe. The railway is expected to span more than 500 kilometers—morethan200inChina,250inKyrgyzstanand thefinal50kilometersinUzbekistan.

CEVA Logistics has been an IRU member since 2019, and CEVA’s global leader for cross-border and multimodal solutions, Kelvin Tang, was recently awarded the IRU New Industry Shapers award in acknowledgment of his accomplishments in pioneering TIR transportation in China and promoting Asia-Europe trade.
