MUMBAI : DP World, a leading global provider of smart end-to-end supply chain solutions, announced its m u l t i m o d a l s e r v i c e ‘ S A R A L - 2 ’ , connecting Chennai to the National Capital Region under the 'SARAL' initiative. This service is the first multi-modal daily rail freight service with a capacity of 500 TEUs per week. DP World launched the firstof-its-kind dedicated scheduled Rail Freight Service, 'SARAL' -'Sustainable, Assured, Reliable, and Agile Logistics’, connecting customers from South Gujarat to the markets in and around the National Capital Region (NCR) in November 2023.

NEW DELHI : India is eyeing a significant fleet expansion of large domestically flagged ships amid disruptions to global supply chains and sharpened focus on international trade. Sarbananda Sonowal dedicates first-ever Made-in-India ASTDS Tug

PARADIP : Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of MoPSW & AYUSH inaugurated the 60T bollard pull tug named ‘Ocean Grace’ and the Medical Mobile Unit (MMU), virtually on 2nd March, 2024. The Ocean Grace is the first make in India ASTDS Tug developed by the Cochin Shipyard Limited under MoPSW The Medical Mobile Unit (MMU) is part of port’s commitment to corporate social responsibility. This initiative highlights ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative of PM Modi. The event was attended virtually by dignitaries namely Shri Shripad Naik, Union MoS of MoPSW and Tourism; Shri Shantanu Thakur, Union MoS of MoPSW; Shri T. K. Ramachandran, Secretary, MoPSW & others.

During the event Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said, ‘Paradip Port stands as a shining example of progress and growth. With each passing year, it sets new benchmarks in export import traffic management, symbolizing Ministry’s commitment to efficiency and excellence. ‘

‘Under the visionary leadership of PM Modi, MoPSW is making efforts to fulfil Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. The 'Ocean Grace' built at a cost of Rs. 45 crores, stands as a pinnacle of maritime engineering, equipped with cuttingedge technology and boasting a remarkable bollard pull of 60 tonnes. Its imminent inauguration heralds a significant leap forward in our pursuit of maritime infrastructure excellence, promising years of uninterrupted and flawless port operations ahead’, added Shri Sonowal.

The first ASTDS tug is powered by NIGATA main engines and a Power Z-Peller ZP Propulsion engine, this tug is meticulously designed for optimal efficiency and reliability, guaranteeing seamless navigation and proficient vessel assistance, especially for large vessels like VLCCs and ULCCs.

The goal of the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP) is to convert at least 50% of all tugs into Green Tugs by 2030 and to have Green Tugs operating at all major ports. JNPA, DPA, PPA, and VoCPA will purchase two brand-new green tugs (battery-electric powered) from Cochin Shipyard by 2027 as part of the first phase. Today, PPA fulfilled the vision by coming up with India’s first ASTDS Tug By implementing measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, domestic/short sea shipping ferries, port vessels (tugs/crafts/dredgers), and OSVs/PSVs aim to achieve a remarkable reduction of 50% by 2030 to 70% by 2047.

Under the Maritime AmritKaal Vision 2047, in the coming years’ the Decarbonisation Cell is set to pioneer the development of cutting-edge technology vessels, initiating pilot runs across various categories This ambitious initiative includes the introduction of five electric water taxis, two hybrid electric Ro-Ro ferries, and two hybrid LNG electric cargo carriers. Furthermore, the plan entails deploying a hybrid tug at JNPA, along with three dual-fuel container Ro-Ro ferries. The endeavour extends to incorporating green hydrogen and ammonia-

powered tugs at four major ports. Additionally, the vision encompasses the deployment of a green hydrogen or ammonia-propelled coastal cargo bulk carrier, along with an offshore vessel, showcasing a dedicated commitment towards sustainable maritime practices and environmental stewardship.

In the state of Odisha, the Sagarmala Programme has been instrumental in driving significant infrastructural development along its coastal areas. Currently, 53 projects valued at approximately Rs. 54,500 Cr are being monitored, with 21 projects already completed, amounting to Rs. 12,700 Cr An additional 32 projects, valued at Rs. 41,800 Cr, are in various stages of implementation. Notably, 7 projects, partially funded by MoPSW, are underway, with one completed and six in progress. Furthermore, under the Holistic Development of Coastal Districts initiative, nine projects, totalling Rs. 157 Cr, have been identified, focusing on fisheries, skill development, tourism, and urban water transportation. Ongoing endeavours include the transformation of the Paradip fishing harbour into a world-class facility, with a budget of Rs. 108 Cr, and the up skilling of 2860 candidates through the Skill Development Program – Phase II. Looking ahead, upcoming projects aim to uplift the fishermen community by establishing a fishing harbour at Chandipur and improving ferry services between Satapada and Jahnikuda, with a focus on enhancing local connectivity and preserving ecological balance amidst climate change challenges.

Paradip Port significantly contributes to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, encompassing education, environment, healthcare, sanitation, electricity, sports, and culture. The inauguration of the Medical Mobile Unit (MMU) exemplifies this commitment. Costing around Rs 48LPA to operate, the MMU reflects the port's dedication to providing accessible healthcare to underprivileged communities nearby. Staffed with skilled medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, technicians, and pharmacists, the MMU offers various services like maternal and paediatric care, disease management, and health awareness programs. Its mobility ensures healthcare reaches those in need across Paradip and its surrounding areas.

It is noteworthy that Paradip Port’s expansion is at centre stage now. The Western Dock project worth Rs 3,004.63 crore is a crucial step towards enhancing its capacity to over 300MTPA in next two years. The project encompasses the creation of a new dock, equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and handling facilities, tailored to accommodate various dry bulk cargoes Moreover, the project includes deepening the inner harbour to accommodate Cape vessels, necessitating draft depths of up to 18 meters. The project involves deepening and optimization of inner harbour facilities including development of western dock on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode at Paradip Port.

“We want to increase the number of Indian flagged ships by ten times to make the country a formidable force in global maritime trade,” the official said on condition of anonymity, adding that plans to achieve this goal are being drawn up and will be finalised soon af ter the next Government takes charge after the general election, expected to be held in April-May

According to the Shipping Ministry, the country has around 1,500 vessels registered in the country with a gross tonnage (GT) of 13 69 million GT More than twothirds of these are engaged in coastal trade while the rest are operating on

overseas routes. India’s 486 overseas vessels have a capacity of 12 11 million GT while the 1,034 coastal vessels have 1.58 million GT China has more than 5,000 flagged ships and has orders for about 1,500 large ships in the pipeline It is estimated that China has close to 2,200 flagged vessels already engaged in overseas trade, with the ability to stunt global trade.

“While there are many Indian flagged vessels, most of them are engaged in local trade. The focus is to increase the number of overseas vessels as the country expects growing export and global trade,” the official said.

In overseas trade, the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) is the

largest Indian shipping company

It has 57 vessels with 2.85 million GT, followed by Great Eastern Shipping Co Ltd, which has 46 vessels with 2.06 million GT. In line with the new goal, it has also been decided to defer the proposed disinvestment of SCI.

“Recent developments have reinforced the strategic importance of SCI. The Government wants to maintain its presence and grow in the sector. SCI will be encouraged to increase its fleet size and ramp up its global presence,” the official said.

Another concern regarding India’s overseas vessels is the large number of ageing ships. According to official data, 184 of the 486 vessels are more than 20 years old.

India allows export of 30,000 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to Tanzania

NEW DELHI: The government has permitted exports of 30,000 tonne of non-basmati white rice to Tanzania and 80,000 tonne of broken rice to Djibouti and Guinea Bissau The export is permitted through National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL), the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has said in a notification.

Though exports of non-basmati white rice have been banned since July 20, 2023 to boost domestic supply, exports are allowed on the basis of p e r m i s s i o n g r a n t e d b y t h e Government to certain countries to meet their food security needs on request.

Grapes exports will likely rise 10% this year despite high freight costs

Nashik - India’s fresh grape exports are seen rising by over a tenth in the 2023-24 season on strong demand from Europe, its main market. The increase in shipments is notwithstanding the higher freight costs, which have more than doubled t o t h e r e g i o n o n a c c o u n t o f disruptions in the Red Sea region. Supply issues from South Africa have helped push up demand for Indian grapes in Europe, exporters said.

Cochin Shipyard builds on success with addition of new Dry Dock facility

KOCHI : Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) was in the national limelight recently when Prime Minister ShriNarendraModi inaugurated ₹4,000-crore worth infrastructure projects in Kochi He expressed confidence that the port city in Kerala would soon become South Asia’s largest ship-repair centre. With the addition of a new dry dock and international ship repair facility at a cost of around ₹2,800 crore, the public sector unit is raring to achieve new highs.

Mr.Madhu S Nair, Chairman and Managing Director, CSL, says o p p o r t u n i t i e s a b o u n d i n t h e shipbuilding market, given the growing demand globally “We are inspired by the PM’s speech during his recent visit, which is a major i m p e t u s f o r C S L a n d I n d i a ’ s shipbuilding infrastructure. We are not expecting any immediate outcome after the PM’s statement. But we believe it would help us pick up

further orders,” he says.

The shipbuilding sector is set for greater growth primarily due to the challenges faced by ageing fleets the world over in meeting the new regulatory requirements, thus accelerating the demand for fleet replacements.

India commands less than one per cent of the $140-billion global shipbuilding market. “However, going by the order intake over the past 2-3 years at CSL and other yards in the country, we could be looking at much better numbers in the coming years,” Nair says.

In the area of ship repair, an estimated $20-billion global market, India’s share is about one per cent. CSL’s share in the Indian ship repair market is about 50 per cent The yard’s new international ship repair facility adds about 25 per cent capacity, he says.

Maritime India Vision 2030 to position India among the world’s top 10 s h i p b u i l d i n g a n d s h i p r e p a i r destinations by 2030 It also aligns w i t h t h e r e c e n t l y a n n o u n c e d ‘AmritKaal Maritime Vision 2047’ initiatives, which include expansion of port infrastructure and maritime trade, and promotion of sustainable practices, he says.

The new dry dock at CSL is 310 m long; the international ship repair facility is equipped to hoist vessels weighing up to 6,000 tonnes. The large capacity will not only buttress Kochi’s prowess in shipbuilding and repairs but also facilitate the development of a business ecosystem in the region that encompasses micro, small and medium enterprises, as well as ancillary facilities. Larger vessels like aircraft carriers and LNG carriers can be accommodated, thereby cutting India’s dependence on foreign nations for their construction and repair.

Moody's raises India's 2024 GDP forecast to 6.8% from 6.1%

MUMBAI : Global rating agency Moody's raised India's GDP growth projection for 2024 calendar year to 6.8 per cent, up from the 6.1 per cent earlier.

The increase in estimate was attributed to India's robust economic performance in 2023 and diminishing global economic challenges, reported PTI, citing the Moody's report.

S u r p a s s i n g t h e a n a l y s t s ' expectations of 6.6 per cent, India's economy grew 8.4 per cent during the October-December quarter. Moody's attributed this strong growth to the government's capital spending and vigorous manufacturing activity

However, the gross value added (GVA), which is a measure of the total value of goods and services produced in the economy and

excludes indirect taxes and subsidies, grew 6.5 per cent, prompting economists to say that GDP data overstated growth trends.

"The wide divergence between the GVA and GDP in the OctoberDecember quarter was mainly due to a sharp fall in subsidies in that quarter largely because of lower payouts on fertilizer subsidies like Urea," reported Reuters, citing a senior Government official.

The divergence was at a 10-year high, said Neelkanth Mishra, chief economist at Axis Bank, who does not expect this to continue and sees the economy growing 6.5 per cent in the next financial year
