Policy initiatives to shape India into Global Manufacturing Hub, feel Industry Experts NEW DELHI: Disruption in the global supply chain has opened up opportunities for large-scale manufacturing in India, aided by significant policy initiatives such as production-linked-incentive (PLI) schemes and low corporate tax rates for new manufacturing, among others. Structural issues like cost of land and electricity, lack of adequate infrastructure and shortage of skilled manpower could play the spoilsport if not addressed on time, says industry. "MNCs that manage supply networks have acknowledged the necessity to hedge against future events and have decided to geographically disperse their supply chains. As a result, India has reaped significant benefits," NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said. The government has unveiled a $27 billion worth of PLI scheme for 13 sectors to help integrate Indian companies into the global value chains and tap into the opportunity.
The PM Gati Shakti - National Master Plan (NMP) which brings together 16 ministries to enable integrated planning and coordinated implementation of infrastructural connectivity, is expected to lower logistics costs significantly. The corporate tax rate for new manufacturing has been reduced to 15%. "There couldn't have been a better time for the government to announce various schemes which will act as enablers to create a viable eco-system for companies to invest in advanced technologies in India," Rajesh Menon, director-general of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said. "Auto industry in India is also poised to become a major player in the global supply chain and these schemes would provide the necessary impetus in this regard," Menon added. The MSME sector has also gained in strength and seems in a position to support big investment. "MSMEs have
seen a remarkable improvement in access to finance and power and significant improvement in ease of doing business with introduction of GST," Anil Bhardwaj, secretary-general of the Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises said. V i k r a m K i r l o s k a r, c h a i r m a n (manufacturing council), the Confederation of Indian Industry, feels it is time for the industry to step up. "Government measures can give you added incentive but it is upon manufacturers to improve upon scale and quality." The government and businesses see the opportunity but acknowledge the need for improvement in the enabling framework. "In the medium term to long term, India will have to address its structural issues," Kant said. In the short term, he believes it is extremely important to enhance ease of doing business in manufacturing.
India still waiting for global sugar prices to rise to strike export deals: ISMA NEW DELHI: Indian sugar mills are still waiting for global sugar prices to rise to enter into further export deals, industry body ISMA said. Owing to fall in global prices of raw sugar, not many export contracts happened in the last one month or so, beyond the 38-40 lakh tonne of export contracts which have already been signed, it said in a statement.
"Since almost nine months are left for the current season, mills are still waiting for the opportune time to enter into further export contracts," Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) added. During October-November period of the ongoing 2021-22 season, sugar mills exported over 6.5 lakh tonne of sugar, higher than 3 lakh tonne in the year-ago period.
In the domestic market, ISMA said mills sold 47.50 lakh tonne of sugar during O c t o b e r - N o v e m b e r, a g a i n s t t h e government fixed sale quota of 46.50 lakh tonne for the same period. Total sugar production reached 115.55 lakh tonne during the two months under review, as against 110.74 lakh tonne in the year-ago period.
Highest-ever exports in a month and in a quarter, touching USD 300 billion in merchandise exports till December, 2021 is phenomenal in itself as it showcases the continuous resilience of exports sector: FIEO President MUMBAI: Reacting to t h e Tr a d e D a t a , F I E O President, Dr A Sakthivel said that the highest-ever exports of USD 37.29 billion with a growth of 37 percent during the month and USD 103 billion during the October-December Quarter of 2021-22 along with an merchandise exports of about USD 300 billion with an increase of around 49 percent during April-December, 2021-22 is phenomenal in itself, as it has broken all previous records of recent times, showcasing the continuous resilience of India's exports sector. The enthusiasm with which the Exim community has impressively performed during the year has further given a boost to the sector, thereby helping the economy further move towards recovery. The forecast of growth in the economy along with the recent GDP numbers also showcases the positive impact of exports, added FIEO Chief. Praising the efforts and hard work of the exporters, Dr Sakthivel thanked the Hon’ble Prime Minister, whose clarion call to exporters further enthused the exporting community for such an outstanding performance. Dr Sakthivel also welcomed the steps taken by the
government under the able and dynamic leadership of the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi and also the Union Finance Minister and the Union Commerce & Industry and Textiles Minister for showing confidence and trust on the exporters during these challenging times. The FIEO President said that the top sectors, which performed impressively during the month were Engineering Goods, Petroleum Products, Gems & J e w e l l e r y, O r g a n i c & I n o r g a n i c Chemicals, Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, Electronic Goods, RMG of All Textiles, C o t t o n Ya r n / F a b r i c s / M a d e - u p s , Handloom Products etc., Plastic & Linoleum and Rice contributing to about USD 30 billion (constituting about 80 percent of exports with a growth of 41 percent during the month over December 2020). Out of these, many of them were labour-intensive sectors contributing majorly to the exports basket, which itself is a good sign, further helping job creation in the country. Looking at the current trend, we are on course to achieving the USD 400 billion merchandise exports target for the fiscal, said FIEO President. Dr Sakthivel also added that spectacular exports growth coupled with orders in
hand will help in pushing India’s exports further during the next fiscal thereby aiming for exports in the vicinity of US$ 525-530 Bn during FY’ 2022-23. However, imports clocking USD 59.27 billion during the month with a very high growth of 38.06 percent, is a point of concern and should be analysed, said Dr A Sakthivel. The FIEO Chief is of the view that though the government has announced a slew of measures to support exports, the need of the hour is to soon announce extension of the interest equalisation scheme and allow transfer of MEIS and expand usages of RoDTEP and RoSCTL scrips. Some of the other major issues which requires the attention of the government are necessary steps with an option to support the sector in case of spread of new variant of Covid-19, encouragement to overseas marketing for exports, fiscal and tax support to address logistics challenges, developing an Indian shipping line of global repute, restoration of facility for import of trimming and embellishments under customs notification No. 2/2021 dated 1st of February, 2021 and services rendered to foreign national and paid in free foreign currency to be given IGST /ITC Refund among others.

PSA Mumbai (BMCT) creates New Milestone in CY 2021 Highest Record since incep on in December 2021
NAVI MUMBAI: PSA Mumbai (BMCT), developed by PSA International, has achieved a New Milestone in Container handling during the last Calendar Year (CY) 2021. It handled 1,172, 110 TEUs during the last year clocking an annual growth of around 42% over its previous year CY 2020. In fact, December 2021, witnessed highest record since the inception with a Vessel Throughput of 1,44,130 TEUs and Rail Volumes of 25,211 TEUs on 138 Rakes in all, informed a recent communiqué from the Terminal.
Historic and Highest Ever Merchandise Export Figures for December - Piyush Goyal NEW DELHI: As per the Preliminary Data for December 2021, India’s merchandise export in December 2021 was USD 37.29 billion, the highest ever monthly achievement, which shows an increase of 37.0% over USD 27.22 billion in December 2020 and an increase of 37.55% over USD 27.11 billion in December 2019.

ONE INDIA joins hands with Saraswatipur’s children
K O L K A T A : ONE India partnered with a small local school in remote Saraswatipur, located in the Siliguri District of West Bengal recently. The initiative was a part of the Company’s CSR program for FY21-22. ONE India’s partnership with this little village goes back to 2019 when the company, along with RUGBY INDIA, had a two-day event focused on sustainable community change for young people. The sport was leveraged as a tool of transformation of underprivileged children. The optimism and talent of the children had an indelible impact on the ONE India team. By the year 2021 the world has changed immensely, reeling under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic that cost millions of lives and livelihoods. This also caused higher dropout rates among young children from underprivileged families.
This year, therefore, ONE INDIA as part of its CSR program supported the children of Fr. Paul Taverna Memorial School (A Don Bosco Institution) where many children of Saraswatipur study. Father Davis Veliyan, the Principal of the school laments, the number of children in the primary school has dropped to 100 from 150 children due to the ongoing pandemic and lack of funds”. ONE India extended support to the children with clothing and hygiene kits and will also help them with educational items when the academic session begins. The smiles of these beautiful children and a promise of their better tomorrow was the most rewarding part of this initiative for ONE INDIA.

India’s merchandise import in April-December 2021 was USD 443.71 billion, an increase of 69.27% over USD 262.13 billion in April-December 2020 and an increase of 21.84% over USD 364.18 billion in April-December 2019. The trade deficit in December 2021 was USD 21.99 billion, while it was 143.97 billion USD during AprilDecember 2021. Value of non-petroleum exports in December 2021 was 31.67 USD billion, registering a positive growth of 27.31% over non-petroleum exports of USD 24.88 billion in December 2020 and a positive growth of 34.92% over nonpetroleum exports of USD 23.48 billion in December 2019. Value of non-petroleum imports was USD 43.37 billion in December 2021 with a positive growth of 30.22% over non-petroleum imports of USD 33.31 billion in December 2020 and a positive growth of 50.20% over non-petroleum imports of USD 28.88 billion in December 2019. The cumulative value of non-petroleum exports in April-December 2021 was USD 257.14 billion, an increase of 39.82% over USD 183.91 billion in April-December 2020 and an increase of 24.74% over USD 206.13 billion in AprilDecember 2019. The cumulative value of non-petroleum imports in April-December 2021 was USD 325.73 billion, showing an
increase of 56.41% compared to non-oil imports of USD 208.25 billion in April-December 2020 and an increase of 21.78% compared to non-oil imports of USD 267.47 billion in April-December 2019. Value of non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports in December 2021 was USD 28.69 billion, registering a positive growth of 28.64% over non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports of USD 22.30 billion in December 2020 and a positive growth of 36.21% over nonpetroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports of USD 21.06 billion in December 2019. Value of non-oil, non-GJ (gold, silver & Precious metals) imports was USD 35.57 billion in December 2021 with a positive growth of 34.68% over non-oil and non-GJ imports of USD 26.41 billion in December 2020 and a positive growth of 47.75% over non-oil and non-GJ imports of USD 24.07 billion in December 2019. The cumulative value of non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports in April-December 2021 was USD 228.25 billion, an increase of 36.66% over cumulative value of non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports of USD 167.02 billion in April-December 2020 and an increase of 28.12% over cumulative value of non-petroleum and nongems and jewellery exports of USD 178.15 billion in AprilDecember 2019. Non-oil, non-GJ (Gold, Silver & Precious Metals) imports was USD 263.66 billion in April-December 2021, recording a positive growth of 47.33%, as compared to nonoil and non-GJ imports of USD 178.96 billion in AprilDecember 2020 and a positive growth of 17.20% over USD 224.96 billion in April-December 2019. Top 10 major commodity groups covering 79% of total exports and showing positive growths in December 2021 over corresponding month of previous year.
Business activity remains high at the cusp of third wave: Nomura MUMBAI: Even as India is at the cusp of third wave, business activity has remained high last week, a Japanese brokerage firm said recently. It said that even though the impact of the new wave would not be as severe as the previous waves, but Omicron-induced restrictions could derail the recovery in contact-intensive sectors in the January-March quarter. The Nomura India Business Resumption Index which tracks and compares the activity for a particular week inched up to 120.3 for the week ending 2 January from an upwardly revised 120.2 during the prior week (119.8 previously).
“India seems to be on the cusp of a third wave. While early signs point to a lower mortality rate, it bears close monitoring, Nomura said in a statement. The restrictions could derail the recovery in contactintensive ser vices in Q1, but global experience suggests a smaller impact than previous waves and a swift growth rebound once cases peak, it said in a statement. In its previous report, it had suggested that the economy remains on recovery path despite fear of surging omicron cases, tightening policy by central bank and inflationary pressure.

Shanghai Port continues to rank 1st in Container throughput Worldwide BEIJING: The container throughput of Shanghai Port exceeded 47 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2021, ranking first globally for 12 consecutive years despite the COVID-19 impact on the shipping industry, port data showed. Last year, the port handled 32 million TEUs in foreign trade and 6.3 million TEUs in domestic trade. The throughput of international transit containers at the port exceeded 6 million TEUs for the first time, or a year-on-year increase of 13.4 percent, according to
the Shanghai International Port Group Co., Ltd. Technological support such as automatic terminals and intelligent heavy trucks has played an important role in achieving the growth amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a port source said. The port is speeding up its digital transformation and production mode transformation to improve the operation potential and ensure the stability of the industrial chain and supply chain, the source added.
Ceylon Shipping Corporation to operate Container Feeder Service between Colombo and Bangladesh COLOMBO: The Ceylon S h i p p i n g Corporation plans to operate a Container Feeder Service between Colombo and Bangladesh and this will be followed by a second service between Colombo and Oman. Ceylon Shipping Corporation (CSC) Chair man Sudhammika Wineendra was quoted recently as saying that they have already approved an MoU with the Attorney General to be signed with the Bangladeshi Shipping Corporation soon. In addition, we have successfully had talks with the Oman Ambassador in Sri Lanka to launch a feeder service from Colombo to Oman for containerised cargo as well. He said that they plan to hire two container ships that could carry around 1,000 to 1,500 TU’s to launch this operation. “We will soon be calling for RFP’s in this regard.” He said that both these countries don’t have large deep ports similar to Colombo and they wanted to exploit that advantage in bringing additional business to the Colombo Port and revenue to the CSC. “Since there Colombo Port is attracting large shipping lines regularly our objective is to take containers out of them and reship them to Bangladesh and Oman from the
two smaller vessels we plan to take on lease.” He identified raw materials from Colombo to be shipped to Bangladesh and mostly apparel exports from Bangladesh to be shipped to Europe and US via Colombo Port. With the pandemic, freight charges have shot up and we see this business to be very lucrative. Wineendra who was also the former Vice Chairman of Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) said that there were some issues with Sri Lanka Ports Authority and these too have now been ironed out. Ceylon Shipping Corporation will continue their operations for Coal transport through their two fully-owned two vessels M.V. Ceylon Breeze and M.V. Ceylon Princess (pictured) and during the offseason, they would be deployed to transport other essential supplies ensuring that they are not docked but in waters and bringing the much-needed revenue in dollars to Sri Lanka. During the pandemic, there were suggestions to dock them due to health concerns but I was against it and operated them under added health precautions. “I must also thank former Shipping Minister Johnston Fernando for taking a bold decision to open and function the Colombo Port even during the peak of COVID -19 lockdowns while several other ports were shut down.
India and UK may start formal negotiations for FTA this month NEW DELHI: India and the UK are likely to launch formal negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) in the second week of this month followed by the first round of talks after a week, people aware of the development said. "The idea is to launch the negotiations and the first round of talks this month," an official said recently. While a delegation comprising representatives of the UK's trade ministry and businesses is to visit India to launch the negotiations, the two sides may consider doing a virtual launch amid rising Covid-19 cases, sources said. The two sides plan to put in place an interim agreement by March 2022 followed by a comprehensive agreement. The interim trade pact would involve early tariff or market access concessions on certain key high priority products and services, they said.

India also wants enhanced mobility for its professionals. The UK is keen on tariff reduction on Scotch whisky and a bilateral data adequacy agreement prior to the finalisation of a full-fledged free trade agreement. Reduction or removal of tariffs on automotive products, and removal of barriers to trade in food and drink, services, and healthcare and medical device sectors are among the objectives of proposed agreement, sources said. “The UK is keen to ink trade agreements after Brexit and India is a natural partner for it," said the official cited above. The India-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee (Jetco) would also meet during the launch of the negotiations.
