India mulls connectivity trial runs with Middle East Ports to drive forward IMEC

NEW DELHI: India is exploring connectivity trial with Middle East; and the first phase would involve one port on the country’s west coast with its counterpart West Asia. The trials, a part of the proposed India-Middle East EU Economic Corridor (IMEC) project, will check on associated rail links with these ports, officials partaking in discussion said.

The latest version of Lynx Fleet includes features such as Reefer Health, which uses Carrier’s proprietary technology to monitor near-live reefer unit performance and offers up to a 72-hour forecast. This provides detailed visibility of individual containers' location, movement, and temperature.

In addition, fleet managers can download diagnostic information, gaining insights into the health of their reefers by identifying anomalies, possible causes, and potential solutions.

Furthermore, Lynx Fleet offers API feeds for communication with third-party platforms and user interfaces.

Beyond providing innovative digital solutions, Carrier Transicold offers comprehensive service training to its customers. This includes Lynx Fleet training updates, refrigeration unit operation programs, and other specialized training.

NYK Jointly establishes New Ship-Management Company in Hong Kong for LNG Carriers

OPearl was founded together with CMES LNG Shipping Company Limited ("CMLNG"), a subsidiary of China Merchants Energy Shipping Co., Ltd. ("CMES"), a leading shipping company in China, and CETS Investment Management (HK) Co , Ltd ("CETS"), a subsidiary of the CNOOC Group, a Chinese energy company

NYK, CMLNG, and CETS held a ceremony on April 18 to open the Hong Kong office OPearl is NYK ’s sixth ship-management company for

LNG carriers, complementing those based in Japan, Singapore, the United Kingdom, France, and Taiwan. Opearl will manage LNG carriers, including six vessels will be chartered to CNOOC Gas and Power Singapore Trading & Marketing Pte. Ltd. Through OPearl, NYK seeks to deepen its relationship with CMLNG and CETS and contribute to stabilizing the world's energy supply and lowering carbon emissions through stable LNG transportation.

India mulls connectivity trial runs with Middle East Ports to drive forward IMEC

Feasibility studies are being carried out on identifying rail connectivity gaps and probable solutions to plug them. Also being carried out are studies to deter mine the nature of cargo, the expected volume and other associated factors.

According to the official, the initial phase involve study of the target traffic, infrastructure gaps, operational and regulatory procedures is being carried outtoexploreorevaluatetangible(cost& time)andintangiblebenefits.

The cargo types initially planned is containers, with further expansion into dry bulk, liquid bulk (except POL) “Volume identification is under study,” the official said.

The IMEC, a proposed 4,800 km long route comprising a railroad, ship-to -rail networks, and road transport routes extending across two corridors, was announced in September 2023 in New Delhi on the

Strategically, the IMEC is viewed as a counter to China’s intercontinental Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), although its scale and scope are relatively limited.

Trial Runs

There are major ports on both sides of India and UAE, an official explained. Primarily, the shortlisted ports along the western coast of India include Kandla and Mundra (in Gujarat) and JNPT in Maharashtra; and they are proposed to be connected to Jebel Ali, Fujairah or Abu Dhabi in the UAE.

“So one port in India and another in the Middle East will be shortlisted for the trial runs. The shortlisting process is under-way,” the official added.

As per the original plan, all the three Indian ports are to be connected by sea

links to Fujairah, Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi in the east, followed by the railroad link through Saudi Arabia and Jordan. This route will be extended onwards to Europe in the west by the port of Haifa in Israel, and along with the ports in Marseille in France, Messina in Italy and Piraeus in Greece.

NEW DELHI: The DGFT has sought information from various export bodies on the trade finance eco system in India and related challenges to assess if the government’s interest equalisation scheme for exporters is yielding results and how trade finance can be improved.

The DGFT has been asked by the Finance Ministry to show that the interest equalisation scheme is yielding results It has asked us for certain details for a study on trade finance it is carrying out. We have already provided those details to the DGFT Once all export bodies give their submission, a report would be put together,” a representative of a Delhi-based export body told.

The interest equalisation scheme, first implemented in April 2015 for five years, allows exporters of 410 identified products and all exporters from the

MSME sector, to get bank credit at a subsidised interest rate determined by the government The banks are reimbursed by the government for their lower interest earnings.

The last extension given to the scheme is set to lapse on June 30 2024.

“We not only want the interest equalisation scheme to continue, we want the rates to be increased to the previous levels and have communicated as much to the DGFT The rates were reduced when repo rate was brought down to 4 4 per cent Again it has increased to 6.5 per cent. That’s why 2 per cent enhancement in subvention should happen,” said Ajay Sahai, DG, FIEO.

More Korean SMEs entering India to do business

India benefits from Global Supply Chain Diversifications

Drewry: World Container Index up 151% on a Yearly Basis

Container Index increased 4% to $4,226 per 40ft container last week.

•The latest Drewry WCI composite index of $4,226 per 40ft container is 198% more than average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rates of $1,420.

•The average composite index for the year-to-date is $3,323 per 40ft container, which is $598 higher than the 10-year average rate of $2,725 (which was inflated by the exceptional 2020-22 Covid period).

•Freight rates from Shanghai to New York increased 6% or $372 to $6,835 per 40ft container. Likewise, rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam swelled 5% or $271 to $5,270 per feu. Similarly, rates from Shanghai to Genoa rose 4% or $199 to $5,693 per 40ft box Also, rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles increased 2% or $113 to $5,390 per feu Also, rates from Rotterdam to Shanghai inched up 1% or $4 to $677 per 40ft box. Conversely, rates from Rotterdam to New York decreased 1% or $19 to $2,222 per 40ft container Meanwhile, rates from Los Angeles to Shanghai and New York to Rotterdam remain stable. Drewry expects freight rates ex-China to continue rising next week due to the onset of the early peak season.

India to be the fastest growing major economy in 2024-2028, says EIU

M U M B A I : T h e E c o n o m i s t Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Outlook report has forecast India to be the fastest growing major economy in 2024-2028, with its growth expected to outpace China’s.

The report suggests that as India’s economic heft expands, there would be a crossover in the mid-2040s with BRICS nations taking over the G7 in terms of nominal gross domestic product (GDP).

The EIU has revised its forecast for real GDP growth for 2024 to 2.5 per cent compared to 2.4 per cent previously “ growth will be unchanged rather than slowing from 2023. Growth is proving surprisingly resilient in the face of high interest rates and geopolitical risks,” the EIU Global Outlook report said.

Over the next five years, EIU has projected the global economy to grow

b y 2 8 p e r c e n t , w i t h m o r e fragmentation and regionalisation in the world economy dragging the growth potential.

“The return of industrial policy, including sanctions and the provision of new incentives, will push firms to adopt more inefficient supply chains, stoke trade tensions in strategic sectors and make it difficult to c o m p e t e a c r o s s t h e g l o b a l marketplace,” the EIU report said.

The Finance Ministry’s monthly economic review for April said that a f t e r a s t r o n g g r o w t h w h i c h surpassed market expectations in FY24, early indications suggest a continuation of the economic momentum in the first quarter of FY25.

Maersk : Is India the new global supply chain leader? Here’s what

When it comes to the supply chain, China is the big name that comes to mind. With a massive workforce and systems that are tried and tested, China has been a reliable source for supply chains worldwide for over 50 years. However, as other countries focus on their development and economic goals, potential has arisen for people to look to other countries as options and even overtake China as the biggest supply chain hub. India is one of the countries that has recently come into conversation as a potential outlier With a workforce to match China’s political ambitions, we believe the country's potential is a possibility to explore what opportunities India has to take over the mantle and what barriers are in their way. Opportunities for supply chain management in India

• In early 2024, India was reported to be the world's fastest-growing economy. The country is expected to have an 8.4% GDP growth using various strategic moves to keep the growth going - an effort that is recognised by big business players like Apple and Tesco moving their investment focus to India. There are numerous reasons why India was observed to have made such a leap with two of the biggest reasons being structural reforms and strategic economic moves such as global partnerships and policy changes. The Indian government has implemented several reforms to make the business environment more conducive to foreign investment. Policies like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme are aimed at boosting manufacturing and exports.

• The potential of a growing middle class. The middle class in India have been reported to be the fastestgrowing demographic group with a 6.3% rise between 1995 and 2021 The middle class is estimated to represent 38% of the Indian population by 2031. This shift in demographics is the driving force of the economy leading to higher volume growth, an evergrowing demand from a pool of consumers, more competition and lower prices including a large working force at the ready empowered by education. Already India is leading when it comes to Englishspeaking STEM graduates and it’s estimated that 65% of the population is under 35 years of age.

• Strategic alliances. Along with Apple and Tesla who have moved their investment focus to India, Walmart and other large organizations have also changed their focus to India In November 2023, Walmart was reported to have reduced its imports with China and upped its Indian partnerships. Reuters reported that Walmart was “Importing more goods to the United States from India and reducing its reliance upon China as it looks to cut costs and diversify its supply chain.” Walmart has had a significant interest in India proven by the $3.5B investment towards their stake in Flipkart showcasing their support and goals in India. The telecommunications firm Cisco has also made the decision recently to start manufacturing in India stating that “Fueled by a rapidly developing digital economy, India is a focal point of innovation and business for Cisco.&rdquo

• Independence and influence Unlike China and Vietnam, India is not dependent on other countries for its manufacturing goals. Vietnam resources most materials from China and is used as a primary assembling hub, while for India, most of the raw materials needed are made there and are easily accessible. The Make in India initiative that was

introduced in 2014 has focused on boosting the country's manufacturing capabilities including electronics, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. India is also strategically located making it an ideal spot for global trade routes.

Barriers for supply chain management in India

• Don’t forget Vietnam. According to this CNBC article, China is not the only country standing in the way of India becoming the leading source of all supply chains - Vietnam has been a consistent player, especially in the technology and garment manufacturing space, owing to the lower costs, workforce and reduced red tape Other than middle range to smaller organizations preferring to work with tried and tested methods, India also has the barrier of being larger than Vietnam which means more states with different policies that need to be navigated as well as higher taxes. “One hurdle for India’s manufacturing hub ambitions is the country’s 10% import duty for information and communication technologies,” reports CNBC, “This is higher than Vietnam’s average import duties of around 5%.”
