JNPA welcomes Iranian Delegation visiting India Cont’d. from Pg. 3
H.E. Mr. Jalil Eslami and all the Delegates were taken through a presentation during w h i c h J N PA C h a i r m a n h i g h l i g h t e d v a r i o u s developmental Projects at JNPA. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at Navi Mumbai is one of the Premier Container handling ports in India. Commissioned on 26th May 1989, in less than three decades of its operations, JNPA has transformed from a bulk-cargo terminal to become the Premier Container Port in the Country. J N PA o p e r a t e s f o u r C o n t a i n e r Te r m i n a l s : t h e Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT), the Gateway Terminals India Pvt. Ltd. (GTIPL), Nhava Sheva International Gateway Terminal (NSIGT) and the newly commissioned Bharat Mumbai Container Ter minals Private Limited (BMCTPL). The Port also has a Shallow Water Berth for general cargo and another Liquid Cargo Terminal which is managed by BPCL-IOCL consortium and newly constructed coastal berth.
Recently Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority signed a concession agreement with JM Baxi Ports and Logistics Ltd. - CMA Terminals on July 29, 2022 for JNPCT. Thus JNPA has now become India’s first 100% Landlord, Major Port. The new name of the JNCPT will be NHAVA SHEVA FREEPORT TERMINAL PRIVATE LIMITED.
HMM Headquarter Moves to New Location - Yeodo Shrine House SEOUL: HMM finished 12 years of 'Living in Yeonjidong' and started a new voyage in Yeouido. What will the new building look like, a space where HMM will open another shining era? Introducing a work space that has evolved from work efficiency to convenience.
Yeodo Shrine House Building When we enter the lobby, we are greeted by a message welcoming HMM to Yeouido.
Space where HMM's model container ships and bulk carriers are displayed
The large curved screen at the reception desk fills the field of view, making the vessel appear more three-dimensional.

India seen overtaking China as biggest importer of seaborne Russian crude Overall Russian crude oil imports to India are set to exceed 1 million barrels a day (b/d) in July NEW DELHI: India, fuelled by its appetite for discounted Ural grades, is understood to have overtaken China as the top destination for seaborne Russian crude oil this month. The overall Russian crude oil imports to India are set to exceed 1 million barrels a day (b/d) in July, of which Urals crude has accounted for 880,000 b/d in the first 25 days, according to London-based energy analytics company Vortexa. China’s import of seaborne Russian crude oil is likely to end July below India’s, although definitive Chinese numbers are not available.
“China and India continue to haul in Russian cr ude from the seabor ne market, with India likely to pass China to be the top importer in July. This is the first time Indian imports of seaborne Russian crude have exceeded those from China,” said Emma Li, China analyst for Vortexa. Russian Urals crude going to China on ships has been 300,000 b/d this month. China receives more of the Russian ESPO Blend crude favoured by its independent refiners mainly based in Shandong. China also buys ESPO Blend under a long-term contract via dedicated pipelines.
Russian crude oil travelling through pipelines is not included in this study. However, it is estimated to be only around 10 to 20 per cent of all crude oil flowing out of Russia; the remaining vast majority is through ships on sea, which are tracked by Vortexa. The share of pipelines used to be over one-third before the RussiaUkraine war. Much of it went to Europe. India predominantly buys the Urals grade, shipped from Black Sea ports and Mediterranean, but it has also started taking a different Russian grade shipped from the Far East, though that entails a much longer sea route.

Govt to facilitate Private sector participation in PM Gati Shakti Master Plan soon : Special Secretary – Logistics NEW DELHI: The PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan was launched last year with the aim to break departmental silos and bring in more holistic and integrated infrastructure planning with a focus on Multimodal M o d a l c o n n e c t i v i t y. A p a r t f r o m bringing Central Ministries and Departments together for infrastructure planning, the master plan is also getting the State Governments onboard. Amrit Lal Meena, Special Secretary (Logistics), Department for Promotion of Industr y and Inter nal Trade, Commerce Ministry was recently quoted as saying that the Government is working on a protocol for private sector participation in Gati Shakti Master Plan and soon the protocol along with facilitation mechanism will be established. On the Progress of Gati Shakti, he said, “after the launch, the first task was to upload data layers on the National Master Plan. BISAG -N (Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geoinformatics), which is developing the National Master Plan, has uploaded more than 900 data layers from different Central Ministries and more than 450 data layers pertaining to the state governments. Now Gati Shakti digital portal is up and running for usage by Central Ministries for their infrastructure planning and it is also being put to use by many of the State Governments. Second major aspect of the master plan is the capacity building and training, which is to be imparted to various Central Ministries and state governments and also to the consulting firms who are associated with different ministries for planning purposes. That exercise has also been extensively carried out. People have been trained,
user ID, passwords have been issued and most of the ministries are now using it. At the national level, the institutional framework envisaged in the form of Empowered Group of Secretaries has already been established, network planning group constituting heads of planning division from various Ministries and Departments have already been set up with more than 25 meetings already been held and a technical support unit to support the network planning group has been set up. Speaking on Participation of States, he said, almost all the States, except for a f e w, h a v e a l s o s e t u p t h e i r institutional framework. So, all these states are fully on board and slowly and steadily adoption at the state level is picking up. The extent of adoption by States, in terms of putting data layers, in terms of its uses for their infrastr ucture planning, that varies from State to State and it depends on the interest shown by a particular State. It is a slow and steady progress. There are a large number of States which can be termed as frontrunners. Some of the States have started using the National Master Plan for their planning purposes. Some of the States have put their land revenue maps. So States like Gujarat, Kar nataka, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Rajasthan have taken active involvement since the beginning. On planning to integrate the private sector into the Gati Shakti Master Plan, he said, “the National Master Plan is for usage by everyone, including the Government Departments. It is meant to be used by the private sector also. Now we are working out a protocol as to how the private sector is to be
involved with regard to access of data and its uses. Very soon the protocol and facilitation mechanism is likely to be established. For the Country as a whole when the private sector uses the National Master Plan data for its decision support system, then efficiency gains would come. If an investor before taking an investment decision is able to visualize the connectivity of a particular geography in terms of transport infrastructure, telecom infrastructure, power, gas infrastructure and so on, then the decision making would be better. Very soon it will be made available to the private sector.” On the progress of 100 Gati Shakti Multimodal Cargo Terminals. He said, “the Ministry of Railways has already come out with Gati Shakti Multimodal Cargo Terminal Policy. As per the latest discussions, 11 such Cargo Terminals have been planned by the Ministry of Railways and for rest they are at different stages of development. The National Highways Authority of India is spearheading the development of Multimodal Logistics Parks. There are plans to develop 35 such parks. Multimodal Logistics Parks will be the hub for the movement of containerised cargo in a articular geography. In this year’s budget, the setting up of four new Multimodal Logistics Parks was announced and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has already started working on it. The connectivity to such MMLPs will be broadly along the expressways or highways. If there are requirements of rail connectivity, that under Gati Shakti will be discussed in the network planning group and depending on the requirements suitable action will be taken.
Railway hike Haulage charge on Empty Containers and Flat Wagons Railways reported 1418 million tonnes (MT) freight loading during 2021-22, 15 per cent higher than the 1233.24 MT loading in 2020-21 NEW DELHI: The Indian Railways has hiked the charge it levies for ferrying empty containers and flat wagons by reducing the discount it offers. Under the revised rates, there will be a discount of 10%. This is down from a 15% discount on haulage charge per twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) for movement of empty containers and empty flat wagons. A TEU is a measuring standard often used for containers.
These revised charges will be valid from August 1, 2022 to October 31, 2022. I n A p r i l t h i s y e a r, t h e n a t i o n a l transporter had reduced the discount it offers for movement of empty containers and empty flat wagons from 25% to 15%, on the then prevailing haulage charge. A senior Rail Ministry official has told that the objective of these discounts was to encourage the container segment of freight during the COVID-19
pandemic. With record loading being seen in the last financial year, and the container loading showing expected growth, these discounts are being gradually reduced. The Indian Railways reported 1418 million tonnes (MT) freight loading during 2021-22, 15 per cent higher than the 1233.24 MT loading in 2020-21. This was the highest ever freight loading reported by the railways during a financial year till date.

DCSA : The benefits of replacing EDI with APIs in Container Shipping APIs are the modern standard for interoperable, digital data communica on AMSTERDAM: Internet APIs power the apps you use every day. Using your smartphone to do things like order an Uber, send a text message, order a pizza or do a search is only possible because standards-based APIs enable communication over the Internet. APIs are the modern standard for interoperable, digital data communication. The shipping industry, however, still relies mostly on EDI for digital data communication. Developed in the late 1960s, EDI successfully replaced paper with str uctured, streamlined electronic transmission of data. So why switch to APIs if EDI isn’t broken? Here are three reasons. Real-time data exchange EDI is not intended for “real-time” data exchange. It is normally configured to send messages on a pre-set schedule, making it difficult to know what’s happening with a shipment as it’s happening. With EDI, shippers must wait for carriers to notify them about agreed-upon events. Managing exceptions requires processing batches of EDI messages at fixed intervals. In contrast, APIs can automatically send data in real-time to any API-compliant device that connects to the internet. Shippers and freight forwarders can query a carrier’s system or subscribe to automatically receive status updates for any relevant event. If there are delays or other types of exceptions, users can learn about them as they happen and work to resolve them immediately. Faster innovation Implementing EDI is costly and complicated. There are several EDI standards in use today, and each has many different versions. If two supply chain partners want to exchange data using EDI, numerous things must be agreed in advance. Setting up and testing an EDI connection can take multiple software developers 4 to 6 weeks’ time,
and making changes to these connections, no matter how small, can be labour intensive. What’s more, it’s virtually impossible to hire developers with EDI skills, because today, APIs are the tool of choice for modern IT. Time, costs, and scarcity of developers are huge obstacles to innovation for organisations that continue to rely on EDI. In contrast, virtually all APIs that exchange data over the internet use standard protocols and formats. All it takes to connect with a partner is for each party to implement the API, which takes one developer who’s familiar with APIs a few days, not weeks. Once APIs are implemented on both ends, data can start flowing. Think of an API as a bridge, data traffic is always flowing across it. All you need are the right credentials to get updates the moment they’re available. Great customer experiences EDI data transmission standards are highly structured, this often results in each EDI message containing a great deal of data, not all of which may be needed by the receiving partner. The unnecessary data must be processed and eliminated by the receiver, which is cumbersome and resource intensive. Because of this (and the other issues with EDI), many shippers rely on freight forwarders and other service providers to process and manage data for them. However, with standardised APIs, no data sanitising is necessary. Shippers, freight forwarders and service providers can get exactly the information they need when they need it from the carrier via APIs. This saves everyone time and enables freight forwarders and service providers to invest resources in building more valuable services on top of API data. APIs also enable carriers to streamline the onboarding process while providing a better customer experience to logistics partners.
WTO issues new edition of World Tariff Profiles GENEVA: The WTO has recently issued the 2022 edition of “World Tariff Profiles”, which provides comprehensive information on the tariffs and non-tariff measures imposed by over 170 countries and customs territories. The report was jointly prepared with the International Trade Centre and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Summary tables at the start of the publication provide cross-country comparisons of the average "bound" or maximum tariff each economy may apply to imports from other WTO members and the average tariffs it applies in practice. Data is provided for the category of "all products" as well as for agricultural and non-agricultural products. Import and export profiles
provide cross-country comparisons on the value of imports, export diversification, and relevant tariff data. One-page profiles in Part 2 of the report provide more detailed data for each economy, with tariffs broken down by product groups. Each profile also shows the economy's main trading partners and the tariffs levied on their exports by these markets. Statistics on non-tariff measures (NTMs), such as anti-dumping measures, countervailing measures and safeguards, complement the data on tariffs. This edition also includes two special topics. The first analyzes the preferential rules of origin in international trade. It discusses the complexities involved in determining whether available preferential import
tariffs can be utilized and highlights that highly technical and complex rules are among the main factors hindering the utilization of preferential treatment under trade agreements. The second special topic looks at the use of NTMs on "green" and "brown" energy products. It notes that the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy in response to climate change adds an urgency to liberalising trade in green products. The analysis reveals that NTMs are currently more widespread for brown energy products than for green products in terms of frequency of use, coverage and prevalence. One of the reasons for this may be the fact that green products are normally innovation products, and countries have not yet developed regulations for those products.
E-invoicing to be mandatory for businesses with turnover exceeding Rs. 10 cr from Oct 1 NEW DELHI: E-invoicing for businesses with aggregate turnover exceeding Rs. 10 crore will be mandatory from October 1. Presently, e-invoice is compulsory for businesses with an annual tur nover of over R s . 2 0 c r o r e . Fo l l o w i n g t h e recommendation by the GST Council, Finance Ministry has issued a notification
for lowering the threshold. E-invoicing prescribes a standardised format of an invoice that a machine can be read. It is a system in which B2B invoices are authenticated electronically by the Goods & Services Tax Network (GSTN) for further use on the common GST portal. Under the electronic invoicing system, an identification number will
be issued against every invoice by the invoice registration portal (IRP) to be managed by the GSTN. Businesses for which e-invoicing is mandated and if they do not, their invoice will not be valid. UP Govt seeks to take Embassies’ help to boost Exports • Indian embassies will provide the much-needed traction and visibility to our traditional products in key export destinations across the globe • UP merchandise exports had jumped 30 per cent from Rs 1.07 trillion in 2020-21 to more than Rs 1.40 trillion in 2021-22 NEW DELHI: The Uttar Pradesh Government will tap the Indian Embassies in the US and European countries in its bid to double merchandise shipments to Rs 3 trillion in the next 4-5 years. The Indian embassies in the US, UK, Germany, Australia, Israel, Singapore, etc. will promote the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) products, apart from traditional handicrafts and indigenous products, under the state’s flagship One District One Product (ODOP) scheme. “Indian embassies will provide the much-needed traction and visibility to our traditional products in key export destinations across the globe,” UP Additional Chief Secretary (MSME and export promotion) Navneet Sehgal said. Bucking the pandemic headwinds, the UP merchandise exports had jumped 30 per cent from Rs 1.07 trillion in 2020-21 to more than Rs 1.40 trillion in 2021-22, of which the ODOP basket contributed 72 per cent. The UP MSME
department had already tied up with leading e-commerce platforms viz. Flipkart and Amazon to market the state’s merchandise basket and would make a similar pact with e-bay as well, Sehgal said. The state will also utilise the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) channel to foster merchandise exports. Promoted by the Centre, ONDC is mandated to promote the exchange of goods and services over digital networks. It is based on opensourced and open network protocols, independent of any specific platform, thus providing an expansive sellingbuying experience for institutional entities. Among the top-selling UP products are leather goods, carpets, hand woven textiles, brassware, glassware, sports goods, etc. ODOP scheme, which was launched during the maiden UP Fo u n d a t i o n D a y c e l e b r a t i o n s i n January 2018, is themed at promoting the state’s traditional products and creating local level jobs. In fact, the
state government has been organising virtual global buyer-seller meets over the past two years to augment MSME and ODOP exports. “We are also looking at launching exclusive ODOP marts at fuel retail pumps, railway stations, airports, and bus terminals in the Country. We will invite bids from private companies to set up such marts and work on a commission basis,” Sehgal said. The Yogi Adityanath Government is bullish on the potential of the MSME and ODOP verticals to create employment opportunities, and actively contribute to achieving the ambitious goal of UP becoming India’s first $trillion economy in the next few years. The State is promoting the ‘flatted factory’ concept to economise on space for non-polluting MSME industries. A flatted factor y is a multi-storied industrial building, accommodating a host of industrial and assembly units, apart from ser ving as industrial warehouses.
Corporate Affairs Ministry to seek lenders nod on SCI demerger scheme M U M B A I : To e x p e d i t e t h e privatisation process, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs will hold a meeting with lenders to The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd (SCI) to gauge their views on the revised demerger scheme, that entails transferring Rs1,000 crore from the firm’s surplus cash to the non-core company spun off from the listed entity ahead of sale. Banks and financial institutions that have exposure to SCI will be called for a meeting with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs which is tasked with vetting the demerger scheme, multiple government sources said. State Bank of India, Export-Import Bank of India and Standard Chartered Bank are the main lenders to SCI. “The lenders will be asked to offer their views – consent or dissent – on the
revised demerger scheme during the meeting,” a Government official briefed on the plan said. This is a departure from the process followed while seeking a no objection certificate (NOC) from the lenders for the earlier demerger scheme which involved transferring Rs450 crore of surplus cash to the non-core company named Shipping Corporation of India Land and Assets Ltd (SCILAL). For the earlier demerger scheme, SCI had sought and secured consent letters from each lender. “For the revised demerger scheme, we are not seeking individual consent from lenders because it is fraught with delays. This is being done to expedite the demerger process and fast track privatisation of the company,” the Government official, who did not want to be named, said.
Lender’s approval is a key requirement of the demerger scheme, per norms stipulated by the market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India or SEBI. After the Ministry of Corporate Affairs signs off on the revised demerger scheme, it will be filed with the Registrar of Companies to make it effective. In December 2020, the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), which manages asset sales for the government, initiated the process of privatising Shipping Corporation of India, a ‘navratna’ public sector undertaking, by selling the Government’s 63.75 percent stake to a strategic buyer. SCI is India’s Biggest Shipping company by fleet size, running 59 ships of various types.

Ocean Network Express reports record Q1 profit of $5.5bn SINGAPORE: Ocean Network Express (ONE) reported more than doubling of profit at $5.5 billion for the first quarter ended June 30, 2022 on higher freight rates. Revenue increased 56 percent to $9.01 billion from $5.8 billion in Q12021. Bunker price zoomed 61 percent to $750/MT from $465/MT in the corresponding period last year. Liftings declined 5 percent at 2.9 million TEUs compared to 3.1 million TEUs in Q12021, according to a statement announcing the results. “Compared to Q4FY2021, the lifting on Asia-North America E/B increased due to some improvements in port congestion but liftings and vessel utilisation on Asia-Europe W/B slightly decreased. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the liftings on both Asia-North America and Asia-Europe decreased." The congestion has eased in Los Angeles and Long Beach but worsened at other North American ports (Vancouver, New York and Savannah, etc.), the release said. "Also, inland congestion is deteriorating
again. Congestion in Europe (Hamburg etc.) continues. "In China (Shanghai, Shenzhen etc.), reoccurring lockdowns have caused trucker shortages and yard congestion. Although the lockdown was lifted in June, subsequent strict measures have made recovery slow." Initiatives for 2022 "ONE is implementing its ambitious fleet growth programme, and in May confirmed a $1.6 billion order of 10 Very Large Container Ships," says CEO Jeremy Nixon. "Scheduled to be delivered in 2025, the orders will be fulfilled by Japan's Nihon Shipyard and South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries yards. Each vessel will have a capacity of 13,700 TEU. "Addressing the continued global container shortage, ONE has already purchased 3000 reefer containers and 30,000 dry containers in 2022." Though there are some improvements, there remains an excessive strain on the entire global supply chain, the statement added.
