Visakhapatnam Port Authority sets new record, handles 60 million tons cargo V I S A K H A PAT N A M : Raising a high note of expectancy in the N e w Ye a r o n i t s growth momentum, the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) located strategically on the East Coast of India, has achieved a major milestone by handling 60.28 million tonnes, the highest in its 91-year-old journey in playing a key role in transforming Visakhapatnam from a tiny fishermen town into a mega metropolis. VPA as it is popularly known after its name was changed from Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT), set a remarkable benchmark by handling 60.28 MMT) of cargo during the first three quarters of 2024-25, surpassing its previous record of 59.73 MMT during 2023-24. This achievement marks a historic moment in the illustrious 91-year history of the port. Asked to comment on the achievement, VPA Chairman Dr M.Angamuthu told recently: “It’s a significant turnaround performance for the port with improvement in key performance indicators (KPI).” He said the New Year will be challenging and they intend to bring alternate cargoes like manganese, bauxite and fertilizers. Dr Angamuthu said with improved mechanical and engineering development, VPA will improve its efficiency. It is incorporating changes as per the recommendations of various reputed firms including Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The thrust is to ensure faster evacuation of cargoes at a competitive rate by improving techno-economic parameters as per global benchmarks. He commended the team’s relentless efforts, stating: “This historic achievement underscores Visakhapatnam Port’s standing as a pivotal gateway for India’s trade. It reflects our unwavering dedication to modernisation
and sustainability, aligning with India’s vision for port-led economic growth.” This extraordinary feat has been accomplished through a combination of collaborative efforts, strategic planning, and the adoption of advanced logistics and operational systems. It highlights the port’s efficiency in responding to dynamic market demands while consistently delivering exceptional service quality. Key drivers of success, VPA officials point out, include enhanced infrastructure, commissioning of a new 100 MT crane, upgraded equipment by Visakha Container Terminal Pvt. Ltd (VCTPL), a BOT operator for faster cargo handling, deployment of state- of-the-art technology for quicker tur naround times, and implementation of dashboard analytics for real-time cargo monitoring and efficient workflow management systems to streamline operations. VPA, as part of its determination to offer multimodal logistics solutions, has become a major player in upcoming projects like the expansion of port connectivity roads to 10 lanes, construction of internal flyovers, modernisation of existing terminals. These initiatives are expected to further enhance the port’s position as a leader in maritime trade and contribute to India’s economic progress.

India targeting Russia to boost banana exports to $1 bn: APEDA Chairman NEW DELHI : After successfully exporting trial shipments of fresh b a n a n a s t o countries like the Netherlands through sea route, India is now targeting to increase exports of the fruit to Russia, an official said on Monday. India has set a target of $1 billion banana exports in the coming years. At present, exports of most of the fruits, including banana, from India are happening by air route because of lower volumes and different ripening periods. To increase volumes, India is developing sea protocols for fresh
fruits and vegetables like bananas, mangoes, pomegranates, and jackfruit to promote their exports through ocean routes. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), along with other stakeholders, has developed these protocols for bananas. APEDA is an arm of the commerce ministry. “We are targeting Russia to increase banana exports. We are going to participate in buyer-seller meets in Russia,” APEDA Chairman Mr. Abhishek Dev said. He said India exported bananas worth $ 300 million in 2023-24. It was $ 176 million in 2022-23. India, a major producer of
bananas, has been steadily increasing its presence in the global banana export market. The country’s share in global banana exports has expanded from a mere 0.21 per cent in 2013 to 1.74 per cent in 2023. The government has been actively promoting banana cultivation and export through various schemes and initiatives, including providing financial assistance to farmers, improving infrastructure, and facilitating market access. Domestic farmers are also adopting modern agricultural practices, leading to increased production and improved quality of bananas.
Railways handled 1,437 MT of freight in 2024 N E W D E L H I : Fo r I n d i a n Railways, 2024 has been a very exciting year. Indian Railways has benefited greatly this year from the Ministry of Finance’s allocation of approximately Rs 2.6 lakh crore in capital expenditures for the railways. In addition, the year saw the introduction of a number of innovative initiatives that increased the capacity of railroads to handle freight. Between January and November of 2024, Indian Railways loaded 1,473 MT of freight, a 3.86 percent increase over the previous year. The completion of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor and the Easter Dedicated Freight Corridor was a major factor in this. More than 72,000 train runs were made possible by these two corridors. As a part of the Vikasit Bharat 2047 mission, Indian Railways continued its transformative journey in the year 2024, paving the way for a new era of modernisation and progress. In order
to boost investment from industry in setting up cargo terminals, ‘GatiShakti multi-modal cargo terminals (GCT) are being developed across the country. So far, 354 locations (327 on non-railway land and 27 on railway land) have been identified across the c o u n t r y. T i l l O c t o b e r 3 1 , 2 0 2 4 , 91 terminals have been commissioned. In the Budget 2024-25, the finance ministr y announced three new economic corridors for railways. These three economic railway corridors include Energy, Mineral,
and Cement Corridors; Port Connectivity Corridors; and High Traffic Density Corridors. A total of 434 projects have been planned for implementation under these three corridors. In the calendar year 2024, a total of 58 projects out of total 434 projects were sanctioned across three economic corridors, with a combined completion cost of about Rs 88,875 crore and a total track length of about 4,107 kilometers. Indian Railways have achieved total commissioning of 3433 Km from April 1, 2024, till date, which includes 1158 Km new line, 259 km gauge conversion, and 2,016 km of line doubling. Apart from these, the Railways has also undertaken several projects during the year with a strong focus on meeting world-class travel experiences, boosting freight efficiency, and adopting advanced technologies.
Trade war with India will not be in the interest of US, says RIS NEW DELHI: Initiating trade war with India will not be in the interest of the US, as seen in the past, the Research and Information System (RIS) for developing countries said recently. Given the past experience, new policy shifts may cause temporary setbacks in the short term, but these are often counterbalanced in subsequent years," it said in its policy brief on Trade, Tariff and Trump. "This resilience stems from the proactive responses of affected countries, which include measures such as unilateral tariff hikes, appeals to the WTO's dispute settlement
mechanisms, and other strategic interventions," it added. According to the RIS policy brief, these efforts have proven instr umental in mitigating the adverse impacts of US trade policies, ultimately tempering the pressures exerted by the US administration.
Though apprehensive that the Trump 2.0 administration can target India because of the high trade surplus India has with the US, RIS said structural transformations require time. " U n d e r t h e T r u m p administration, a sharp decline in the level of India's trade surplus with the US was recorded in the second year of his presidency, notably in 2018. However, this downturn was short-lived, and India's bilateral trade surplus with the US began a consistent upward trajectory until the conclusion of Trump's tenure in 2021," it said.

India’s goods, services exports likely to cross $800 bn in 2024: GTRI NEW DELHI: India’s overall exports of goods and services in 2024 has estimated to cross $814 billion, an increase of 5.58 per cent, according to a report by economic think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI). In 2023, the country’s merchandise and services exports stood at $768.5 billion. This year, the report estimated that in 2024, merchandise exports are expected to reach $ 441.5 billion, showing a modest 2.34 per cent increase over $ 431.4 billion in the previous year. In contrast, the services exports are estimated to grow by 10.31 per cent to $ 372.3 billion, up from $ 337.5 billion in 2023. “India’s total exports, encompassing merchandise and services, are projected to exceed
$ 814 billion in 2024, reflecting a 5.58 per cent growth compared to $ 768.5 billion in 2023,” it said. GTRI Founder Mr. Ajay Srivastava said India’s export landscape is undergoing a transformation that highlights both opportunities and vulnerabilities. Sectors such as machinery and electronics are gaining prominence, with machinery’s share in the export basket rising to 6.9 per cent in 2024 from 3.8 per cent in 2014 and electronics climbing to 7.9 per cent in 2024 from 3.3 per cent in 2014, he added. “These trends underscore India’s growing capabilities in higher-value sectors, a necessary shift for long-term export resilience,” Mr. Srivastava said. Traditional sectors of exports, however, are witnessing a decline.
Textiles and garments, which accounted for 21.1 per cent of exports in 2004, now represent just 8 per cent, while gems and jewellery have dropped from 16.9 per cent in 2004 to 7.5 per cent in 2024. “These declines not only reflect changing global demand but also point to India’s struggle to remain competitive in labour-intensive industries,” he said. The coming year poses significant challenges for Indian exports, he cautioned, adding that the global trade growth remains sluggish, hampered by slow economic recovery in developed markets and geopolitical tensions like the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas conflict. Disruptions in Red Sea shipping routes further exacerbate supply chain vulnerabilities.
EIC has evolved as a key facilitator of India’s export trade and quality standards compliance NEW DELHI: The Export Inspection Council of India (EIC), which came into being on 1st January, 1964, is a statutory body tasked with advising the Government on quality control, pre-shipment inspection standards, and other related matters. Since its inception, the EIC has evolved to a key facilitator of India's export trade apart from the regulatory responsibility, enabling exporters to meet the stringent quality demands of international markets. EIC has ramped up testing facilities in the country to 78 accredited labs. Number of export establishments approved through the EIC system increased to 1,446 from 794 during the last decade. Export certificates accepted by importing countries has nearly doubled in a decade, surging from 61,000 to over 120,000. The laboratory ecosystem has been expanded from 21 recognized labs in 2013-14, which are ISO 17025 accredited to 78 labs in 2024-25, to ensure timely testing and facilitate export. Te n - y e a r Tr e n d i n r e c o g n i z e d laboratories of EIC The overall approach of EIC is through development of capability of export establishments and promoting the Food Safety Management System, a System based approach, which instilled confidence by importing countries. The number of export establishments approved through this system increased to 1,446 during 2023-24 from 794 in 2013-14; an 82 per cent growth.
Te n - y e a r Tr e n d i n a p p r o v e d establishment of notied commodities The EIC has developed the trust of international regulatory authorities by demonstration of effective official control systems, which are evident in number export certificates accepted by importing countries, grown from 61,000 in 2013-14 to over 120,000 during 2023-24, which has almost doubled in the last decade. Te n - y e a r Tr e n d i n o f E x p o r t Certicates issued The EIC’s certification system is recognized by major international regulatory bodies, including that of European Union, USA, Australia, Turkey, Korea, Japan, etc., reflecting its commitment to international quality benchmarks. Active participation in Codex Alimentarius, ISO, WTO, etc., has enabled EIC to advance science-based standards, reducing trade barriers and fostering seamless international trade. The EIC is set to launch a userfriendly integrated (traceability module, LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) and E-Health) online portal. This will streamline and manage end-to-end processes involved in inspection, testing, and certification for exports. Adopting advanced technologies, like, IoT based sampling techniques. Geographical expansion to improve trade & inspection processes: Kakinada (AP). New Laboratories at Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Faridabad (Haryana), Mangalore (Karnataka). Upgradation of laboratory towards advanced techniques- Species
Identification, Virus / Pathogen Testing, Authenticity & Geographical Origin and Focus on Rapid Testing Methods to reduce TAT.
