KOLKATA: JSW Infrastructure Ltd
Indicated that they are still interested in the mega Tajpur Deep Sea Port in West Bengal, and it remains open to re-evaluate its strategy for the project “if the project comes for re-bidding”, a senior official said.
JSW Group had failed to emerge as the winning bidder in the last tendering round, where Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd (APSEZ) had emerged as the L1 bidder in October 2022, and a Letter of Intent to Award (LOIA) was handed over to the company
Moreover, Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee’s announcement at the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) in November 2023 that a tender would soon be launched for the development of the port which has led to a cloud of uncertainty around the mega deep-sea port project. Smt. Banerjee had announced that the proposed deep-sea port at Tajpur is ready for tender, which would attract an investment of $3 billion or Rs 25,000 crore.
JSW Infrastructure Joint Managing Director and CEO Arun Maheswari told, “We will re-evaluate our strategies. Previously, when we bid, it was 2-3 years back.” He was in Kolkata to attend a CII Young Indians event.
Since the CM’s announcement, there has been no official word on the next steps, though Adani officials said they were in touch with the state administration. “There has been no official clarification since the CM’s announcement. However,
it comes for re-bidding’
we remain committed to the project and are still waiting for an award,” Adani group sources said, declining to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter
The Tajpur deep sea port project is a challenging one, and the state government needs to be forthcoming to make the project a reality, sources said.
APSEZ is the country’s largest private port operator with an installed capacity of about 550 million tonnes per annum, while JSW Infra is also a major player boasting an installed cargo handling capacity of 170 million tonnes per annum.
The proposed port’s main features include a location five km from NH-116B and around 170 km from Kolkata The port will have a deep draft of 12 1m, an 18-km channel, and tidal support of 3 9m, enabling large capesize vessels of one lakh DWT
The project is expected to entail an investment of Rs 15,000 crore, with an additional Rs 10,000 crore for related port-led infrastructure development, totalling Rs 25,000 crore It is expected to create around 25,000 direct jobs and over one lakh indirect jobs.
The Tajpur deep sea port was touted to usher in a new era of growth in the state, extending its benefits to the hinterland areas. As a deep sea greenfield port, its linkage to the Industrial and Economic Corridor from Dunkuni to Raghunathpur, being developed by the state, will enhance regional logistics and export efficiency, unlocking vast industrial and economic opportunities once operational, the state had said in the past.
HYDERABAD: Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, held a meeting with tobacco farmers, manufacturer’s exporters at Novotel, Shamshabad, Hyderabad On 29.06.2024. While addressing the gathering, he expressed his satisfaction for realization of record high price for the flue cured Virginia tobacco by the farmers as well as record high export performance for the Indian tobacco for FY 2023-24. He shared that as on 27/06/2024 an average price of Rs.269.91 per kg has been realized by the farmers for the sale of 112.35 million kg of FCV tobacco in electronic auctions conducted by the Tobacco Board. He also informed that the export value of un-manufactured tobacco and tobacco products surpassed all the earlier records at Rs.12005.80 crore (1449.50 million US$). This is higher by 11.3% in rupee terms and 19.5 % in dollar terms.
The participants thanked the Hon’ble Minister for the opportunity and informed the problems being faced by tobacco farmers in tobacco production such as shortage of labour, lack of assistance for farm mechanization, higher cost of sulphate of potash(SOP) fertilizer, penalty on excess tobacco production, increased fuel cost for tobacco barns and sought necessary technological/financial assistance from the Government. Traders submitted that tobacco exporters are not covered under any scheme that provides export incentives and requested to extend support to tobacco exporters by including them under the RoDTEP scheme They also requested the government help in curtailing the unauthorized production and use of chewing tobacco in India due to which there is a huge loss to the Government exchequer. They also informed that there is an increase in illicit cigarette sales.

SHANGHAI: China has asserted its leadership in port automation technology and its application scale, as highlighted by the Ministry of Transport in a recent announcement The ministry revealed that China currently boasts 21 automated container terminals and 28 automated terminals for dry bulk goods. Additionally, construction has commenced on 7 large-scale automated ports in the first half of this year alone. These initiatives collectively position China at the forefront globally, both in terms of established automated ports and those currently under development.
The ministry emphasized that China’s advancements in port automation are supported by a robust framework of industrial technical standards For instance, the country has formulated and issued specific design specifications tailored for automated container ports. These standards play a pivotal role in facilitating the construction of smart ports across China, ensuring
efficiency, reliability, and technological innovation in maritime logistics.
Furthermore, China’s technical programs for automated container port construction have gained international recognition and adoption. They have been implemented in several other countries, underscoring China’s role not just as a leader in technological development within its borders but also as a significant
infrastructure.
This strategic focus on automation underscores China’s commitment to enhancing port efficiency, reducing operational costs, and bolstering its competitiveness in international trade The ongoing expansion of automated port facilities reflects China’s proactive approach to modernizing its maritime infrastructure, aligning with global trends towards digitalization and smart logistics solutions.

NEW DELHI : India and Iran plan to fastrack the development of a new rail connectivity route between the Chabahar Port and Zahedan city to leverage the strategically located Iranian port as the gateway to the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC), two officials aware of the development said.
The INSTC project aims to provide the main trade channel for Central Asian and Eurasian countries located on the eastern side of the Caspian Sea and Afghanistan
They said accelerated progress of the new rail link is being considered now as port operations have now become viable with a pickup in the movement of both container and dry bulk cargo and Chabahar becoming a major trading channel for India.
‘Gateway for INSTC corridor’
“ Wi t h i t s s t r a t e g i c g e o g r a p h i c a l l o c a t i o n , Chabahar port can be positioned as a gateway for INSTC corridor The port is presently connected to the hinterland through road network. Feasibility of connecting Chabahar to Zahedan and further to the existing railway network of Iran was examined by Iran, in consultation with other stakeholders. With the likely increase in traffic, as projected by various global agencies, seamless road and rail connectivity from Chabahar port to facilitate transportation of cargo will become very important Focus of the INSTC member states, including Iran and India, is therefore on strengthening the connectivity of the Port with the hinterland,” said the first of the two officials quoted earlier
Recently Shipping Secretary T K Ramachandran said that the long-term contract between India and Iran signed in May this year provides for mechanization and operation of the terminals at the port and that India is
committed to providing facilities as per the agreement.
The second official quoted above said that with its geographical advantage, being located just outside the Strait of Hormuz, the Chabahar port offers financial and operational benefits to the Central Asian and Eurasian Countries located on the eastern side of the Caspian sea and Afghanistan Therefore, efforts for improving rail connectivity for Chabahar port towards the eastern side are on to make the port the preferred link among traders.
This official added that India may again get involved in construction of this railway line that would provide Chabahar with all forms of transportation links including road and rail.
Located in the Sistan-Baluchistan province on Iran’s south western coast, the Chabahar port is an important point on Arabian Sea with easy access from India’s west coast. Kandla port in Gujarat is the closest to the Chabahar port at 550 Nautical Miles while the distance between Chabahar and Mumbai is 786 Nautical Miles. Since 2019, it has handled container traffic of more than 80,000 TEUs and Bulk and General Cargo of more than 8 million tonne.
The port’s integration with a special free zone augments its appeal, while India’s incentives, such as concessions on vessel-related charges and cargo charges, bolster trade flows through Chabahar, fostering economic growth and cooperation.
Chabahar is envisaged as a crucial link in the eastern route of the INSTC corridor, facilitating the movement of goods between India and Central Asian countries This collaboration between India and Iran on developing infrastructure and logistics along the 7,200 km INSTC aims to reduce transportation costs and time, thereby promoting trade between these regions.
