NEW DELHI: Despite global trade uncertainties, India's exports are charting a new course, venturing into uncharted territories in Africa, Latin America, and Central Asia T h i s e x p a n s i o n i s d r i v e n b y a surprising surge in exports of cars, motorcycles, and precious metals, highlighting a strategic shift beyond traditional commodities like textiles and spices

India's export growth story is about more than just established players. The key driver lies in its remarkable success in penetrating 'absolutely new markets.' These regions, previously uncharted by Indian exports, have witnessed a significant influx of $234 million worth of goods, including cars, two- and three-

wheelers, and precious metals, during the April-December 2023 period. This translates to a 5% growth in exports for key sectors.

The focus on new markets extends beyond just value. Geographically, India is witnessing a significant expansion. Previously on the periphery of India's export map, regions like Central Asia, Africa, and parts of the Americas are now contributing 5% of the country's total exports. This reduces dependence on traditional markets and fosters stronger trade partnerships and e c o n o m i c c o o p e r a t i o n a c r o s s continents.

Red Sea crisis: Indian companies take steps to offset supply chain impact

MUMBAI: Indian companies impacted by the Red Sea disruptions have started taking measures after an impact on their overseas supply chains for both imports and exports due to delay in transit time, increased shipping and insurance costs.

This includes creating an additional pool of working capital to buy raw materials in advance which are imported through that route, air freight to meet urgent demand and negotiation with clients, logistics and insurance companies, industry executives said.

Varun Beverages Chairman Ravi Jaipuria told investors recently the company is over-stocking the raw materials imported for safety reasons which is “creating some cost.” He said freight rates have become more e x p e n s i v e e v e r y w h e r e , c o s t o f materials has gone up and some of the shipments are getting delayed. It has increased the company’s working capital year-on-year

C o m p a n i e s d e a l i n g w i t h confectionery said cocoa prices have shot up the roof and they are trying to procure in advance in bulk. Executives said the global cocoa shortage has been exemplified with the Red Sea crisis.

“Even when we are willing to pay a 25-30% premium price, there is no easy availability of cocoa. This price increase w i l l i m p a c t p r o f i t a b i l i t y, ” s a i d Parle Products Senior Category Head B Krishna Rao.

The Red Sea crisis entered its fourth month impacting global trade since this channel is one of the world’s busiest cargo routes whereby carriers have been forced to reroute shipments via the Cape of Good Hope.

Arvind Ltd told analysts that around Rs 20-25 crore of revenue has spilled over into the current quarter from the December one due to the crisis as it could not fulfill all orders due to container logjam. The company is negotiating the freight costs for the goods where it has to bear the freight,

but for most orders freight is on the account of the customer, vice chairman Punit Lalbhai said in the recent earnings call.

Gokaldas Exports management told analysts earlier this month that most of the client brands are offsetting incremental insurance by talking to their logistics partner and some are also air freighting to save time.

Car makers, who export cars or import components through this route, said there has been some disruption in their operations MG Motor India Chairman emeritus Rajeev Chaba said some components come from Europe. “If the crisis continues for long, there will be an impact for sure. Already logistics costs have increased and there is a delay in shipments,” he said.

Maruti Suzuki Executive Director (Corporate Affairs) Rahul Bharti said since the company’s exports are diversified across about a hundred countries of the world, the Red Sea route affects a small part of the total exports “And for that part, we have started shipping our vehicles through an alternate route which may lead to slight increaseincostandtime,”hesaid

ABU DHABI: The volatile situation in the Red Sea increases the need for an alternate trade corridor to ship goods from India to Europe, India’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates said.

India has taken the first steps with the UAE to begin work on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, or IMEC, Sunjay Sudhir said in an interview here, on the sidelines of a World Trade Organization meeting. The two countries want to take a lead in developing the project, he said Yemen-based Houthi militants began attacking military and commercial ships traveling through the Red Sea in November, prompting the US and UK to respond with airstrikes. The report shows that India’s electronics exports as a ratio

of China’s was 3.38% in Germany and 3.52% globally.

Red Sea crisis hurt Global trade volumes: WTO DG

ABU DHABI: The crisis in the Red Sea, one of the world’s busiest trade corridors, hit global merchandise trade volumes in 2023, according to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, DirectorGeneral, World Trade Organization (WTO).

These disruptions, coupled with a global economic slowdown, likely led to a less than 0.8% increase in global merchandise trade volumes in 2023, falling short of the WTO’s April projection, Okonjo-Iweala said while speaking at the business forum on the third day of the 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13) in Abu Dhabi.

In April, the WTO had forecast that 2023 merchandise trade volumes will likely grow 1 7% The 3 3% growth projection for 2024 remains steady.

S h e p o i n t e d o u t t h a t t h e immediate shipping disruptions in the Red Sea and the Panama Canal have notably affected growth rates and contributed to inflationary pressures globally

Okonjo-Iweala also said that the WTO is developing an updated global trade forecast, expected to be released in March.

Following attacks by Yemen’s Houthi group, using drones and missiles, on commercial ships at the southern end of the Red Sea, many shipping companies have suspended their operations in the region, and are taking longer routes to reach their destinations in the Middle East and Europe.

It is one of the world’s busiest cargo transit points with almost 12% of international merchandise trade passing through it, according to estimates.

Despite these challenges and political tensions, Okonjo-Iweala emphasized the resilience of the global goods and services trade. She advocated for reaching out to policymakers to support enhanced investment and sourcing strategies that incorporate new geographies,

engage more micro, medium, and small enterprise suppliers, and increase the participation of women in trade.

“The future of trade is green. It is digital. And it must be inclusive. Let’s work together (on it),” she added.

Digital trade refers to production, distribution, marketing, sale or delivery of goods and services by electronic means.

The WTO expects global GDP to grow 2.6% at market exchange rates in 2023 and 2.5% in 2024, according to the multilateral trade agency’s Global Trade Outlook and Statistics released in October

PMI for manufacturing activity accelerated to 56 5 in January from 54.9 in December 2023, reflecting an expansionary momentum while PMI for services went up to 61.8 in January from 59 in December 2023, it added.

“The markers for the month like PMI and GST collections point to a r e s i l i e n t m a c r o e c o n o m i c

environment. “An encouraging signal comes from easing of inflationary pressure, especially the moderation in food price inflation,” NCAER Director General Poonam Gupta said.

The report mentioned about healthy GST collections which reached a value of Rs 1.7 lakh crore in January, registering a year-on-year growth of 10.4 per cent. Sequentially, G S T c o l l e c t i o n s i n c r e a s e d 4.4 percent, it added.

Maersk warns Red Sea disruptions could last into second half of year

Maersk has war ned of disruptions to container shipping via the Red Sea dragging into the second half of the year and of heavy congestion and delays for U.S.bound goods.

Major container shipping companies have switched away from the Red Sea and Suez Canal to the longer route around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope following attacks on shipping by Houthi militants.

“Be prepared for the Red Sea situation to last into the second half of the year and build longer transit times into your supply chain planning,” Maersk’s head of North America, Charles van der Steene, said in a statement.

Maersk, a bellwether for global trade, has added about 6% in vessel capacity to offset delays as vessels take the longer route around southern Africa, it said.

The Copenhagen-based company also told customers, which include retail giants such as Walmart and Nike, to prepare for higher supply chain costs.

Longer sailing times have already boosted freight rates.

“Many customers factor a cost per unit into their budgeting, and if that fundamentally changes due to all of this volatility, it could have a big impact on overall costs,” van der Steene said.

Longer sailing times around Africa have also meant significant delays for vessels bound for the U.S. East Coast, said Maersk, advising customers to consider alternative ports in Mexico, the Pacific Northwest, and Los Angeles for goods bound for the East Coast.

Heavy congestion in Oakland, California, have also resulted in delays for container vessels returning to Asia to pick up goods, Maersk noted.

South Korea hoping to conclude FTA talks with India before possible state visit in 2024

NEW DELHI: India and South Korea are hopeful of concluding negotiations to ‘upgrade’ the C o m p r e h e n s i v e E c o n o m i c Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in 2024 before a possible state visit of the Korean President, Ambassador Chang Jae-bok has said.

“At the last round of negotiations in end of January, we found some w i l l i n g n e s s t o c o n c l u d e t h e negotiations within this year. So each side will present concessions to the other side and then hopefully we will reach a compromise,” Chang Jae-bok told reporters on February 28 in New Delhi.

“Hopefully, before the possible bilateral visit by our President –probably after the elections in India and in Korea – we hope to conclude

the negotiations,” the ambassador added.

India’s bilateral trade with South Korea grew nine percent in 2022-23 to $27.88 billion, although India had a significant trade deficit. While India’s exports contracted by 18 percent to $6.65 billion, imports from South Korea jumped 21 percent to $21.23 billion.

In the first nine months of 2023-24, the total bilateral trade stood at $20.92 billion, with India’s exports down seven percent year-on-year at $4.76 billion and imports from South Korea up one percent at $16.16 billion.

On Febr uar y 28, the South Korean Ambassador said that while he hoped trade would continue to increase, it was up to both sides to “work harder”

“ F r e e Tr a d e A g r e e m e n t negotiations are in general very, very difficult to reach agreement because in each country there are some industries With the conclusion of the FTA, some parts of industries will have a loss and some part of the economy will have some gains. So these are political negotiations domestically. It’s not easy,” the ambassador said, adding that he was not in a position to provide any details as the negotiations are still underway.

According to Ambassador Chang, discussions between the two Foreign Ministers are expected on issues such as defence, defence production and co-operation, economic security, science and technology, and peopleto-people exchanges.

Global Container equipment fleet growth picks up pace : Drewry

LONDON: Growth in the global pool of shipping containers is picking up pace on rising trade prospects and s l o w i n g b o x p r o d u c t i v i t y, a s disruption in the Red Sea and Panama Canal lengthen voyage transit times, according to the latest analysis from Drewry’s recently published Container Equipment Forecaster report.

Drewry estimates that the global box fleet rose 1% last year to 51.4 mteu, as a pickup in newbuild output in the final months of the year boosted inventories that had hitherto registered declines. And for 2024 it has upgraded its fleet projection with the expectation that the global pool will expandafurther2 3%overtheyear

Slightly higher rates of growth in trade and lower levels of box productivity are the key drivers of Drewry’s revised projections The latter has worsened this year as a consequence of ongoing draught restrictions in the Panama Canal and ocean carriers rerouting ships from Suez Canal transits to round the Cape of Good Hope sailings, as a result of attacks on ships in the Red Sea by Houthi rebels.

With containers spending longer

on ships and taking more time to complete their journeys, sales into the secondary market have slowed and the stock of empty containers, especially in depots and factory yards in China, have been largely eroded.

Once again, the liner shipping industry’s vulnerabilities and those of its customers have been exposed by geopolitical events and operational constraints, this time on two of its main arteries. While the impact of disruption in the Panama Canal is not proving to be as significant as that of the Suez Canal, it is estimated that between six-andseven million teu have been affected by thetwoincidents

At the same time, in October and November 2023 factories in China cut prices for new containers as they sought orders for the final weeks of what had proved to be a very challenging year for manufacturers. With prices for 20ft containers falling to about US$1,850 in some weeks, orders increased strongly with ocean carriers the main buyers The availability of capacity in the factories means these containers also being delivered very quickly

On the trading front, Drewry expects 2024 to be significantly stronger than 2023 with global container handling throughput forecast to increase by 2 3% This compares with minimal growth in 2023. Furthermore, Drewry projects that ocean carrier’s box-to-slot ratios will increase in the short term, as buffer stocks of equipment are increased to cope with the current supply chain challenges.

India to explore investing in Land Bridge project: Thailand Foreign Minister

NEW DELHI: Investment in the Thailand Government’s Land Bridge mega project and waiving the visa requirement for Thais visiting India were among the topics up for discussion during Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara’s official visit to India.

Parnpree, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, has been in India since Sunday to meet with local authorities and business leaders. He said that mutual investment opportunities were

discussed during the meeting of the Thailand-India joint committee on economy and commerce, with both sides looking to increase trade and investment value to US$ 35 billion (1.25 trillion baht) by 2027 One of the measures to achieve this goal is to eliminate import obstacles and negotiate more free trade agreements to allow Thai and Indian products to enter each other’s markets with ease, he said.

Parnpree also pitched the Thai government’s Land Bridge project to Indian investors, who promised to look into the feasibility of the project

The two sides will also explore opportunities to integrate the project with India’s marine economy under the 7-nation BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral T e c h n i c a l a n d E c o n o m i c Cooperation), of which Thailand is also a member
