India Maritime Awards 5th Edition to be held on 1st October in Mumbai MUMBAI: India Maritime Aw a r d s ( I M A ) 5 t h E d i t i o n , organised and managed by India’s oldest Shipping Daily – Daily Shipping Times - is all set to roll out now in Mumbai at St. Regis Hotel on Friday, 1st October 2021 from 5.00 pm onwards, instead of 24th September 2021 announced earlier. Changing guidelines of State Government on Covid 19 led to the postponement of IMA by a Week time. Immense support from the trade continues to pour in which enables IMA to grow bigger and better each successive year. No wonder, the humongous response
received in terms of nominations each year provides the necessary vigour to Daily Shipping Times, to organise this prestigious Awards function to felicitate the Top Achievers of Logistics and Maritime Industry across India. We are indeed very thankful to the trade for having reposed faith in us by filing record number of nominations this year as well despite Covid 19 pandemic. This Award function will bring in some of the leading lights of Maritime and Logistics sector under one roof to cheer and applaud key achievers and hence is a must attend event in Maritime sector. Government is working to make Northeast a growth engine of the Country : Sarbananda Sonowal Sarbananda Sonowal a ended a Stakeholder Conclave on Waterways
GUWAHATI: Union government is working hard to make Northeast a growth engine of the country, and the region is taking speed on the path of development said Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal while addressing the Stakeholder Conclave on Waterways as Engine for growth at Guwahati. Addressing the forum, Shri Sonowal said that Union government is giving topmost priority to Northeast zone. He asserted that since 2014 the Prime Minister of India is working for the growth of the country with a special focus to Northeast region. He further said that now focus is given to the waterway connectivity in the region as a result Mongla and Chittagong ports are now accessible to us. He urged the stakeholders from across the Northeastern zone to take advantage of the conclave and priorities which products from this region can be exported to foreign countries. Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways Shri Shantanu Thakur said that shipping ministry is taking initiatives to develop and use water resources and waterways for the economic development of the northeast zone. On this occasion Chief Minister of Assam, Shri. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this conclave is platform to get an idea how water resource can be used for economic growth and sharing of ideas through this kind of interactions can help the people of Northeast zone in getting the market for their product. Shri Chandra Mohan Patowary, minister of Industries and Commerce, Transport and Skill development thanked Shri Sarbananda Sonowal for organizing such conclave in the state and taking initiatives for the development of waterways in NE zone. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways is also taking initiative to promote river tourism and water sports along
Brahmaputra, Ministry has identified 7 tentative locations (Oriumghat, Bhupen Hazarika Setu, Koliabhomora Bridge at Tezpur, Bogibeel Bridge, Dikhow Mukh, Kalongmukh and Uzanbazar) for development of tourist jetties. Construction of tourists’ jetties will facilitate river cruise tourism, generate local employment and also growth for local business. These jetties would be in addition to the four tourist jetties at Jogighopa, Pandu, Neamati and Bishwanath Ghat, which have already been approved. This Government declared 20 waterways as National Waterways in 2016. The ministry has initiated work on NW 2 (Brahmaputra) and NW 16 (Barak) as more waterways are considered for development. The Indo Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) route developed jointly by India and Bangladesh at an estimated cost of Rs 305.84 crores to provide an alternate connectivity for all North-eastern states from Guwahati and Jogighopa to Kolkata and Haldia ports. The SirajganjDiakhowa (175 km) on River Jamuna and Ashuganj-Zakiganj (295km) of river Kushiyara on the IBP routes are being developed to connect with River Brahmaputra and River Barak (NW-16) in Assam. The development of an Eastern Grid – which will have Brahmaputra and Barak rivers along with Ganga and Sundarbans – will work as a catalyst to boost regional integration and trade with South Asia and Eastern South Asia; including Myanmar and to further, potentially countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. The conclave was attended by State minister Shri Pijush Hazarika, Shri Sanjeev Ranjan , Secretary Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways , Shri Jayant Singh, VC, IWAI, Shri Amitabh Kumar, DG, Shipping, Shri Vineet Kumar, Chairman Kolkata Port Trust, Shri Bhusan Kumar, JS, MoPSW among others.
Action plan is in place to protect the port’s cargo traffic: VPT Chairman VISAKHAPATNAM: The Andhra Pradesh government approving Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited’s (APSEZ) proposal of acquisition of 10.4 percent stake of Gangavaram Port Limited (GPL), the landscape of maritime transport is all set to witness a transformation in Visakhapatnam. Once the regulatory approvals are received for the acquisition, the Adani Group will have 100 per cent stake in GPL in the eastern seaboard and the move is likely to slice a part of the cargo traffic away from Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT). Earlier, the APSEZ agreed to acquire 58.1 percent stake in GPL from DVS Raju and family followed by 31.5 percent stake from Warburg Pincus. However, the aggressive marketing strategies adopted by Adani Group, faster turnaround time, competitive pricing and attractive discounts offered have a larger scope for affecting the business volume of the VPT in future. With the Build-Operate-Transfer terminals of the Visakhapatnam Port such as Vizag General Cargo Berth Private Ltd (VGCB) and Vizag Seaport Private Ltd (VSPL) already being hit by the GPL, it may not take long for the APSEZ-controlled Gangavaram Port to cannibalise a considerable chunk of volume growth from Visakha Container Terminal Private Ltd (VCTPL) as well. As big players are looking forward to sizeable discounts in tariff that match up with the rate offered by the GPL, Chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Trust K Rama Mohana Rao
says such differential pricing leads to loss in cargo handling and fails to be viable. “To overcome the challenge, an action plan has been readied to protect the cargo traffic from slipping away to GPL,” said VPT chairman. The 50 percent discount on lease rentals of short-term allotment of land up to 11 months, 50 percent discount on terminal charges for mechanised and manual handling of iron ore rakes, equipping of two berths with 100T harbour mobile cranes, capacity augmentation of the oil-handling jetties to accommodate Panamax size tanker vessels and discount on vessel related charges for cape vessels form a part of the action plan the VPT has in place. This apart, development of adequate storage area for stacking six grades plus two sub grades of different coking coal, extension of conveyor system to enhance bulk mechanical handling system, electrified railway lines to improve turnaround time of the rakes and reduce haulage charges are in the pipeline for the VSPL. Once GPL commences its container terminal which is expected to take shape in 2022, Visakhapatnam Port Trust’s business equation, in all probability, may vary. In order to counter the predatory pricing offered by the GPL, the VPT Chairman says, measures will be taken to equip VGCB with complete mechanised operation and adequate stacking area for storage of different grades of coal, while alternative transshipment options with foreign hub ports will be explored by the VCTPL.

China’s two-week port closure to have a mixed impact on India’s trade NEW DELHI: China’s Ningbo Port being shut for 2 weeks is having a mixed impact on India trade, as the port blockage is hurting local electronics market at one end, while container shortage issue in the domestic market is getting addressed albeit for a short period. “Some empty container vessels from China had to be diverted to India upon port closure and this has improved (empty) containers supply for the domestic market. Though this supply ease would last only for another three weeks, we (industry) are expecting at least 10 percent of the shortage to be addressed in this span,” Arun Garodia, vice chairman of EEPC India, told. India has been facing acute shortage of containers since November 2020 leading to ocean freight rates having zoomed 5-7 times within a
span of 8-9 months. “Though the availability of empty containers is improving for India, there is no respite from high ocean freight for the industry,” Garodia added. China’s Ningbo Port was forced to close its Meishan container terminal two-weeks ago after a worker tested positive for COVID -19. The port terminal was reopened on August 25. Alongside, the blockage has already begun to take a toll on the local electronics market, said industry officials. Currently, all key components like chipset, compressors for ACs and refrigerators and television panels (LED & LCD) are being imported from China – at least 70 per cent of the local demand. According to industry executives, hardly any containers are now coming
from China as a result there is severe shortage of these components in India. This has led to many leading brands cutting down on their festive season plans. Usually, they stock up for higher demand during the festive weeks, by ramping up production during July, August and September. “The shortage of components like chipset and panels is hurting. The issue is unlikely to be resolved anytime soon and this is likely to lead to shortage of TVs during the festive season. Moreover, as the Indian Premier League and the ICC T20 World Cup are scheduled in the festive months, we will most definitely witness shortage of TV sets in the market this year”, said Avneet Singh Marwah, Chief Executive O f f i c e r, S u p e r p l a s t r o n i c s – Manufacturer and Brand Licensee of Kodak & Thomson Smart TVs.
GMR Hyderabad Air Cargo starts handling next gen Containers HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Air Cargo (GHAC) has said it has handled a shipment using the next generation temperature-controlled air cargo containers, Envirotainer Releye RLP, which has made it the first cargo terminal in India & South Asia region to do so. GHAC, which is a division of GMR Air Cargo and Aerospace Engineering Limited, is a hub and partner station for Envirotainer in India. GHAC team worked closely with the Envirotainer team and partner airlines to ensure that all the infrastructure,
protocols and procedures were in place to induct the RLP containers which is being done for the first time in India at the GMR Hyderabad Air Cargo Terminal, the company stated. Envirotainer has introduced the RLP size for the first time in an active container in the industry, it said. The start of Releye RLP handling by GHAC will now allow leading pharma companies and other shippers in India to easily access the next generation active cooled container solution to move their temperature-sensitive shipments easily and effectively, it said.
GHAC team worked closely with the Envirotainer team and partner airlines to ensure that all the infrastructure, protocols and procedures were in place to induct the RLP containers which is being done for the 1st time in India at the GMR Hyderabad Air Cargo Terminal, it stated. With Hyderabad region being home to one of the largest concentrations of COVID -19 vaccine manufacturing globally, the introduction of the Releye RLP containers in the market will further strengthen the global supply chain for the movement of these vaccines, GMR said.
SEA demands Govt to permit GM soymeal import via Mumbai Port Trust & Tuticorin Port NEW DELHI: The government, which has allowed import of 12 lakh tonne of GM soyameal through Nhava Sheva Port, should also permit shipments via Mumbai Port Trust and Tuticorin Port as the later can handle bulk vessels, edible oil body SEA said recently. The government has permitted soymeal import vessels and containers to be offloaded only at Nhava Sheva Port, also known as Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) in Maharashtra. “Nhava Sheva only handles container cargo and looking at current container scenario worldwide and with freights touching the sky, we feel hardly any goods
would come to this port in containers,” Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) said in a statement. A representation in this regard has been made to the Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhwan and Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) Amit Yadav, it said. Nhava Sheva port has not handled bulk vessels for a very long time and the infrastructure for handling bulk vessels is totally missing, it added. In this backdrop, SEA requested the government to “include Mumbai Port Trust also as the discharge port as it can handle bulk vessels”.
SEA also demanded the government to allow discharge at Tu t i c o r i n w h i c h i s c l o s e r t o consumption centres in order to cater to the southern parts of the country. “We feel it would be possible to monitor the arrivals of these ports quite comfortably by the government,” it said. In any case as the window for importing soymeal till October 31 is also very small, it will be very difficult to achieve even 12 lakh tonne arrival, it added. The government has allowed import of GM soymeal to check domestic prices amid shortages.
DGFT recommends anti-dumping duty on melamine from China NEW DELHI: The Commerce Ministry’s arm DGTR has recommended the extension of antidumping duty for five years on imports of Melamine, used in beauty and utility products, from China to protect the domestic industry from cheap inbound shipments. The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has recommended the duty after conducting a sunset review investigation on the imports. It concluded that the imports from China in relation to total imports, demand and production continued to be
significant despite the anti-dumping duty being in existence. DGTR also said that there is a likelihood of continuation and recurrence of dumping from China and consequent injury to the domestic industry in the event of cessation of the current duty. “A c c o r d i n g l y, d e f i n i t i v e a n t i dumping duty…is recommended to be imposed for five years from the date of the notification to be issued by the Central Government, on all imports of subject goods…originating in or exported from the subject country,”
DGTR has said in a notification. It has suggested a duty of USD 161 per tonne on imports. For the first time in 2004, the duty was imposed to guard the domestic industry against cheap Chinese Melamine. It was extended in 2010 and then in 2016. The existing duty will exist till September 30. In a separate notification, the finance ministry has extended the antidumping duty on imports of “Axle for Trailers” originating in or exported from China. Axle for trailers is used in vehicles.

Containership order book doubled up in 2021 : BIMCO 2021 is a spectacular year in Container Shipping OSLO: Freight rates are record high, more cargo than ever before is shipped on the transpacific trade lane specifically and globally in general, and the previous annual record on new orders for container ship capacity has just been breached – in less than eight months. 619 container ships are now on order for future delivery, 381 in 2021 alone, and never has 3.44m TEU being ordered in such a short time span. Still, it’s not a record for the total orderbook, as 6.8m TEU were on order by the end of July 2008, compared to 5.3m TEU today. “Today the container ship order book holds 5.3m TEU of shipping capacity. This set to be added into the fleet from 2023 and onwards. Going into 2021, the order book only stood at 2.5m TEU. Since then, a record high 3.3m TEU has been ordered. Ship owners really like to invest in the business they now. Size still matters, but it’s no longer the only thing. Your ships must be ready to fit emerging trade lanes – and many of them will be scrubber-fitted,” says Peter Sand, BIMCO’s Chief Shipping Analyst. A 16,000 TEU ship was the most popular order 60 container ships with a cargo carrying capacity of 16,000 TEU each were ordered in February, March, April, and June by just five different owners. The one half of them was ordered by two Top-4 tonnage providers and one minor, and the other half by operating liner companies. “It’s very much a sign of times too, you go big, or you don’t go at all. You place order for 4, 5 and 6 ship or as much as 20 units in one go, at one yard only. The buying power when you’re spending USD 2.5bn is significant,” says Peter Sand. As owners see a somewhat different trade pattern developing in recent years and very much right now, due to the US-China trade war and the COVID-19 outbreak, the more ‘versatile’ 13,000-16,000 TEU have been preferred to the Ultra-Large Container Ships (ULCS). No more than 22 ULCS was ordered during the initial seven and half months of 2021. In February, 14 units of 24,000-24,100 TEU ships were ordered and in June another 8 units of 23,500-24,000 TEU followed. Fitting a scrubber to your newbuilt proved popular too In particular for the larger ships, those that lower their voyage costs the most from consuming the less costly heavy-sulphur fuel oil (HSFO). Out of the 168 container ships that was ordered, with a
capacity of at least 11,800 TEU, 117 will be delivered with a scrubber fitted directly from the shipyard (71%). 29 units will be scrubberfitted but also LNG-ready whereas 34 units will be delivered as ‘LNG-capable’, meaning that they will run on gas from day one. 17 appears to be without any such modifications upon delivery. Ships are never delivered as scheduled in the orderbook Container shipping capacity of 1.5m TEU has been ordered so far in 2021, for delivery in each of the years 2023 and 2024. As the scheduled orderbook for 2024 today stands at 2.15m TEU, it’s worth noticing, that the record delivery year, date back to 2015, where 1.66m TEU entered active service on the global container lines’ networks. Due to this inherent bias, BIMCO always account for a certain delay in schedules deliveries, when we aim at forecasting what will actually get delivered in any given year. Our current estimate suggests that the 2015 delivery record will not be broken. For an update on this, please see our quarterly Shipping Market Overview & Outlook, the third of which this year is due in early September. “On top of orders for container ships, we have also seen some liner companies securing air cargo shipping capacity for the short and longer term. To me that is in interesting development, as it indicated that liners are serving shippers, to a greater extent than before by moving more cargo in more ways going forward,” concludes Sand.
