India targeting $1 trillion Exports by 2030: Piyush Goyal Cont’d. from Pg. 4
Goyal said that despite no tourism, travel, or hospitality services due to Covid, India has achieved a historic high in terms of export of services, close to $250 billion. "I want services and merchandise to reach a trillion dollar by 2030, and the UAE will play a very, very important role in this," added the Minister. Speaking on the Comprehensive
Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and the UAE, Goyal said, "The UAE-India partnership is the strategic partnership of the 21st century. CEPA agreement between the two countries is not about trade alone, it's about trade in goods and services. It has a huge geopolitical and economic significance and also, in some sense, a great human element." Goyal highlighted the importance of
the agreement as it gives a brand-new direction to the bilateral relationships, be it energy security, food and nutrition security and overall security of the two nations. "With new opportunities for businesses, job generation, increasing incomes, increasing opportunities for our young boys and girls, our startups, the agreement will set the door for new beginnings and have extraordinary outcomes," added Goyal.
Commerce Ministry relooking at processes to rejig way of working : Piyush Goyal NEW DELHI: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said his ministry is relooking at the processes and rejigging its current way of working and serving businesses and exporters. He said that an exercise is going on to see how the future of commerce should be. The world in many ways is evolving and changing and the Covid-19 pandemic is being one of the periods which has kind of opened “our eyes,” he said. Citing an example of video conferences, he said, it has now become a part of day-to-today working and now has several dimensions which can transform “our” work. “Similarly there are many other things that we see in the world. Within the country, we see in the private sector,
within the Government we see between different Ministries, we learn from each other and therefore the Commerce Department felt that it was appropriate that we relook at all our processes and rejig our current way of working and serving businesses and exporters and people of India. “A n d t h e r e f o r e w e a r e g o i n g through an exercise to see how the future of commerce should be, looking at the future world that we see around,” he said recently. The Minister was replying to a question about progress on a proposal to restructure the Ministry. “Lot of work is going on in that and we are hopeful that in the next few months we will be able to take it to our senior leaders and get it approved,” Goyal said.
The government is planning to revamp the commerce department which will have a more coherent trade promotion strategy with clear targets and execution accountabilities. Under the plan, there is a proposal to set up a dedicated Trade Promotion Body and a Trade Remedies Review Committee. The revamping is aimed at further building on its strategic direction and aspirations for the next decade. A dedicated ‘Trade Promotion Body ’ to drive overall promotion strategy, export targets and execution is proposed to be set up and a stronger active role for missions in trade promotion for market intelligence leads generation and localized research has been envisaged.
Australia close to finalizing free-trade deal with India NEW DELHI: Australia is on the brink of finalizing a free-trade agreement with India with an announcement possible in “coming days,” as the government works to strike a deal less than two months before an expected May election. Australian Trade Minister Dan Tehan said that he and his Indian counterpart Piyush Goyal were meeting daily and “getting very close” to reaching a deal. Tehan said he was hopeful that there could be an
announcement soon. “Both sides are working feverishly to make sure we can get an agreement that’s in both our national interests,” he said recently. A free trade agreement between India and Australia has been more than 10 years in the making, with negotiations beginning in 2011 before being suspended four years later in 2015. Finally in 2020, amid warming ties between Delhi and Canberra, Prime Ministers Scott Morrison and
Narendra Modi agreed to restart negotiations. Two-way trade between India and Australia was worth A$24.3 billion ($18.3 billion) in 2020, up from just $13.6 billion in 2007, according to the Australian government. Experts have said one of the main sticking points is agriculture, with Australia wanting access to the Indian market, but Modi’s government reluctant to put its domestic farmers - a major vote bank at risk.
Egypt to import wheat from India DUBAI: Egypt, one of the largest importers of wheat from Russia and Ukraine, to import Indian wheat amid a sharp dip in global wheat production largely due to the conflict between the two countries, said a senior government official. Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution met the Egyptian Minister of Economic Development Hala El-Said in Dubai where the details of the trade were discussed. In 2020, Egypt imported wheat worth $ 1.8 billion from Russia and $ 600 million worth from Ukraine. India is also looking at increasing its share of exports to countries where it already sends wheat such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Middle East, Yemen, Korea,
Philippines, Nepal and Indonesia. At present India’s wheat contribution to these countries’ import basket ranges between 2-10%. “The idea is to increase our contribution to their import basket sharply.” The official said without wanting to be named. The country is also looking at new export destinations like Nigeria which imports around 13 million Tonnes (MT) of wheat from Russia and Ukraine and Turkey which imports 11 MT and Vietnam which imports 4 MT. India’s contribution to Vietnam is 1 % of its total wheat basket while it does not export any wheat to Nigeria and Turkey. India is looking at a wheat production of 11 MT and its central stock of wheat is expected to be 20 MT by the end of March.
“Therefore there is a huge scope to increase exports,” the official added. India is also looking at strengthening the quality check on wheat and certifications in order to bag more orders. The country plans to increase the number of government approved labs with better infrastructure to control certain pests. India produces around 107.59 Million MT of wheat annually and major wheat growing states in India are Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Gujarat. State governments are also exploring various measures to increase wheat exports. Madhya Pradesh, the second largest wheat producing state after Uttar P radesh, has called a meeting of exporters to facilitate private wheat procurement for exports.

APEDA deliberates on revised EU regulations on organic products for Indian exporters NEW DELHI: In order to keep pace with the changing r e g u l a t o r y requirements for export of organic products to European Union, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) organized a webinar jointly with the Indian Embassy in Brussels and Denmark. The webinar focussed on the revised Regulations being implemented since 1st January 2022 for imports in EU and the market opportunities for Indian organic products. The European Union is the second major destination for Indian organic food products. Under the National Programme for Organic Production
(NPOP), exports to EU stood at $356 million in 2020-21, accounting for around 34% of the $1040 million worth worldwide organic food products exported from India. While complementing the stakeholders on the milestone achieved by India by crossing remarkable export of more than $ 1billion organic products under NPOP, Dr. M. Angamuthu, Chairman, APEDA, emphasized that the applicable standards need to be adhered to in order to maintain the market acceptance by the end consumers and the national regulators. He also stated that APEDA provides possible means for market penetration of new products and brand building through participation in organic food fairs in EU. In order to address the challenges faced by the Indian exporters in
exporting to EU and enhance the share of Indian organic product shipments to EU, a panel discussion was also held with members of OrganicDenmark, Confederation of Indian Organic Industry, International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) and Organic Processing and Trade Association (Europe) (OPTA). Technical sessions were led by Michel Reynaud of IFOAM and Aurora Abad of OPTA wherein the aspects on new regulatory requirements and emerging market opportunities were detailed. In his address, Shri Santosh Jha, Ambassador of India to Belgium, Luxembourg and EU, highlighted the necessity for the market acceptance for organic products, expectation by the importing countries and emerging opportunities for Indian organic products.
Indian steel-makers step up exports to Europe MUMBAI: Indian steel majors are tapping the export market, primarily Europe, as supply shortage from Russia, Ukraine and China led to a jump in spot steel prices there. Indian steel majors, according to market sources, have seen at least 5 percentage point jump in exports to Europe which now stand at between 30 and 35 per cent of total production. Spot price variation is close to ₹15,000 per tonne (between Europe and India) or around $2,000 per tonne, thereby making exports an attractive proposition. Indian steel majors normally export close to 2 0 - 2 5 p e r c e n t o f t h e i r production, with Europe being a major buyer. JSW, Tata Steel, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AMNS) continue to be the major exporters.
Around 81 per cent of the country’s steel production comes from private players while 19 per cent comes from PSUs. According to data available with the Ministry of Steel, exports (of finished steel) rose 30 per cent y-o-y , to 12.29 million in the 11-month-period of FY22 (April-February). In the corresponding period last fiscal, finished steel exports stood at 9.5 million tonnes. “Yes, exports are moving up and it accounts for around 35 per cent of our production, up from the 25-30 per cent levels during normal times. Considering some of the booking trends, exports could be up to around 40 p e r c e n t i n April,” VR Shar ma, Managing Director, JSPL, was quoted as saying recently. European demand Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has
severely hit supplies in Europe. Both Russia and Ukraine were major suppliers, with close to 3-4 million tonnes of steel supplies per month from each of these countries. With the war, there is now a shortage of “at least 4-5 million tonnes per month”, which is being met through Indian and Chinese imports. Market sources say an impending lockdown in Tangshan in China — known as the steel city— has led to further volatility in prices. Global Times in a report mentioned that the largest steel-producing city in North China’s Hebei Province, had strict traffic controls and other curbs after new Covid-19 cases were reported there, resulting in many steelmakers and related businesses halting production and evaluating impact.
Sky-high box freight rates could increase global ination by 1.5% this year: IMF LONDON: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has looked at container freight rates and crunched the numbers to work out what today’s sky-high shipping costs are doing to global inflation. In the latest blog post on the IMF site entitled How Soaring Shipping Costs Raise Prices Around the World, IMF economists note the cost of shipping a container on the world’s transoceanic trade routes has increased seven-fold in the 18 months following March 2020. The analysis predates the war in Ukraine but isn’t isolated from it with IMF officials suggesting the conflict will likely exacerbate global inflation. When freight rates double, inflation picks up by about 0.7%. Studying data from 143 countries
over the past 30 years, the IMF f o u n d t h a t shipping costs are an important driver of inflation around the world: when freight rates double, inflation picks up by about 0.7%. Importantly, the effects are persistent, peaking after a year and lasting up to 18 months. “This implies that the increase in shipping costs observed in 2021 could increase inflation by about 1.5 percentage points in 2022,” the IMF stated. The IMF study has been published at a time where regulators and
politicians, especially in the US, are looking to take action to rein in liner pricing. It has also come out at a time where many analysts are questioning if the container boom has in fact plateaued with all the major box indices in retreat this month and economists suggesting western consumer demand has eased in no small part thanks to the soaring inflation brought about partially by high shipping costs.

IMF : How soaring Shipping costs raise prices around the World WASHINGTON: The sea carries more than 80 percent of the world’s traded goods, most of which sail inside 40-foot-long steel containers stacked by the thousands atop some of the largest vessels ever built. The shock of the pandemic underscored just how crucial the maritime container trade is to the global economy. From Shanghai to Rotterdam to Los Angeles, the coronavirus upended supply chains. Ports lacked workers who were home sick. Truck drivers and ship crews couldn’t cross borders because of public health restrictions. Pent-up demand from huge stimulus programs during extended lockdowns overwhelmed the capacity of supply chains. Besides causing delays in getting goods to customers, the cost of getting them there surged. As the Chart of the Week shows, the result of those challenges was that the cost of shipping a container on the world’s transoceanic trade routes increased seven-fold in the 18 months following March 2020, while the cost of shipping bulk commodities spiked even more. Our new research shows that the inflationary impact of those higher costs is poised to keep building through the end of this year . Our analysis predates the war in Ukraine but isn’t isolated from it: the conflict will likely exacerbate global inflation. Studying data from 143 countries over the past 30 years, we find that shipping costs are an important driver of inflation around the world: when freight rates double, inflation picks up by about 0.7 percentage point. Most importantly, the effects are quite persistent, peaking after a year and lasting up to 18 months. This implies that the increase in shipping costs obser ved in 2021 could increase inflation by about 1.5 percentage points in 2022. While the pass-through to inflation is less than that associated with fuel or food prices—which account for a larger share of consumer purchases—shipping costs are much more volatile. As a result, the contribution in the variation of inflation due to global shipping price changes is quantitatively similar to the variation generated by shocks to global oil and food prices. Our findings also reveal some of the mechanisms at work. We show that higher shipping costs hit prices of imported goods at the dock within two months, and quickly pass through to producer prices—many of whom rely on imported inputs to manufacture their goods. But the impact on the prices consumers pay at the cash register builds up more gradually, hitting its peak after 12 months. This is a much slower process than what is seen after a rise in global oil prices, which drivers feel at the
pump within a couple of months. Rising shipping costs affect inflation in some countries more than others. First, our research shows that the structural characteristics of an economy matter. Countries that import more of what they consume see larger increases in inflation, as do those who are more integrated into global supply chains. Similarly, countries that typically pay higher freight costs—landlocked countries, low-income countries, and especially island states—see more inflation when these rise. Second, a strong and credible monetary policy framework can play a role in mitigating the second-round effects from import prices and inflation. Our analysis shows that keeping inflation expectations well-anchored is key to containing the effect of soaring shipping costs on consumer prices, particularly core measures that exclude fuel and food. Our results suggest the inflationary impact of shipping costs will continue to build through the end of 2022. This will create complicated trade-offs for many central bankers facing increasing inflation and still ample slack in economic activity. Moreover, the war in Ukraine is likely to cause further disruptions to supply chains, which could keep global shipping costs—and their inflationary effects—higher for longer.
Shanghai Port congestion at new high : Vessel Value Data SHANGHAI: There has been an almost five-fold increase in the number of ships waiting to load or discharge at Shanghai in the last two-and-half weeks, according to data from VesselsValue. Authorities in Shanghai imposed a strict two-stage lockdown of 26 million residents, closing bridges and tunnels and restricting highway traffic, following increasing Covid
cases, Reuters reported. Vivek Srivastava, Senior Trade Analyst, VesselsValue, in his latest update, said: "With roads, bridges and tunnels between Pudong and Puxi areas blocked for at least a week, Shanghai International Port Group, which manages the city's ports, released a statement saying other than in cases of extreme weather, 24-hour operations would be maintained."
India at 8% growth can double economy in 7-8 years, says NITI VC NEW DELHI: India can double its economy in about 7-8 years if it grows at 8 per cent, which is feasible as the country has sustained a growth rate of 8.5 per cent earlier for a long time, NitiAayog Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar said recently. "If things remain normal, and we are not witnessing the fourth wave of the pandemic or any ghastly outcome in Ukraine then we can achieve 8 per cent growth because we have done that. If we can do it, we can achieve the doubling of
the economy in about 7-8 years," Kumar said while speaking at an event. He said that the target of becoming a $5-trillion economy is not rhetoric, adding that the country is already a $2.7 trillion economy and it just needs to double it. Noting that India has sustained an 8.5 per cent growth rate in 2003-2011, he said, "We must recognise the fact that India is the only country which will have to achieve this growth (8 per cent) while fully taking care of the environment."
