Exceptionally Strong market situation expected to continue well into Q4 of 2021 : AP Moller – Maersk COPENHAGEN: Based on preliminary figures A.P. Møller - Mærsk A/S (APMM) reports an unaudited revenue of USD 12.4bn and an underlying EBITDA of USD 4bn and an underlying EBIT of USD 3.1bn for Q1 2021. The continued strong performance is mainly driven by the continuation of the exceptional market situation with surging demand leading to bottlenecks in the supply chain and equipment (containers) shortage. Volumes in Ocean increased by 5.7% and average freight rates improved 35% in Q1 2021 compared to previous year. Consequently, given the result in Q1 2021 and the exceptional market situation now expected to continue well into the fourth quarter of 2021, the full year guidance for 2021 has been revised upwards with an underlying EBITDA now expected in the range of USD 13-15bn (previously 8.5-10.5bn) and underlying EBIT expected

in the range of 9-11bn (previously USD 4.3-6.3bn). The free cash flow (FCF) for the full-year 2021 is now expected to be minimum USD 7bn (previously above USD 3.5bn), while the cumulative capex guidance for 2021-22 has been raised to around USD 7bn (previously 4.5-5.5bn) on back of higher expected capex to provide additional containers to relieve the current bottlenecks and improve service reliability in Ocean and the organic growth in Logistics & Services. The outlook for the global market demand growth for the full-year 2021 has been revised up to 5-7% from previously 3-5%, primarily driven by the export volumes out of China to the US. Trading conditions for the quarters ahead remain subject to a higher than normal volatility due to potential changes in current demand patterns and the current disruptions in the supply chains and equipment shortages impacting the short-term container freight rates.

By integrating biometrics with AI and networking technology, NEC plays a leading role in realizing the true potential of digital transformation in the logistics sector. We own a wide array of AI technologies that can be adapted to a wide variety of sites to gain necessary insights that ensure secure and reliable operations. Our AI technologies also include system invariant analysis technology that monitors unfavorable conditions and detects any deviations or anomalies. We are proud that NEC is one of the first few companies to venture into pan-region track and trace for logistics. NEC currently provides technology for providing Visibility of 100% of India's Export-Import container volume and further publishes monthly data analytics that provide business critical insights to the stakeholders in terms of managing their businesses as well as its performance benchmarking insights provide the stakeholders in assessment of their performances on Pan India basis. The visibility & efficiency provided has contributed in improving India’s rank in the Logistics Performance Index benchmarking tool.

W

hat innovations and digital services have NEC Corporation launched in the last few years to ease the pain of logisticians in different verticals? Ans. NEC strives to offer solutions that combine the technologies we have developed over the years to facilitate robust supply chains, including NEC's logistics visualization solution. We enable comprehensive monitoring and ensure the best practices for enhanced operations. We have implemented Integrated Video Analytics (IVA) and Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC), at various port terminals handling containerized cargo. These solutions are deployed for proactive incident prevention and safety, ease the monitoring of the entire selected area for surveillance purposes, and alert staff in case of any emergency trigger, thereby streamlining the overall process as well as adherence to compliances. Apart from this, a suite of NEC's solutions including Edge computing solutions, image based detection system, yard management system, gate automation system, logistics control tower, etc. are helping businesses in streamlining their business processes and leveraging technology effectively. For instance, NEC Corporation India supported Dubai Port World to transform its port terminals into smart terminals with the help of effective mobility solutions. This smart monitoring, detection and alert system is based on NEC’S high-tech Intelligent Video Analytics platform which is handling day to day operations at yards, gates and helping DP World to ensure compliances and handle safety and security concerns at its port terminals in real-time round the clock . Additionally, during Covid-19 lockdown, NEC continued tagging the Export Import containers at port terminals with RFID tags under its LDB project for seamless information flow related to arrival and handling of essential materials at sea ports. Nearly 600 operators were working round-theclock in 17 ports (with necessary precautions in place) spread across 9 coastal states. The sudden declaration of the lockdown provided little time for the project team to be prepared with all required resources. However, the team quickly took some critical steps, which turned out to be the differentiator in continuing the operations as an essential service. Besides following covid protocols for the staff, NEC designed new SOP so that operators could maintain social distancing while performing their jobs.

I

n terms of Visibility Solutions, the LDB has been one of your agship programs covering many important ports in India? Is there any pipeline of such

innovative solutions in the Ports and Warehousing sector that's worth pitching to the Trade? Ans. NEC has always been a pioneer in offering technology based solutions to address the business challenges and improve the quality of services and overall value proposition across the stakeholders. Logistics Databank project which is managed through NLDS (NICDC Logistics Data Services) is a joint venture between the Government of India represented by National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT) and NEC Corporation. Its formation effectively leverages Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) across the Indian Logistics Sector. It inculcates best practices across the various processes towards bringing efficiency to the supply chain and provides nation wide single-window container tracking solutions aimed at supporting businesses in the space of Containerization and addressing higher transaction costs incurred. Apart from Logistics Databank Project providing Pan India Visibility of export import Container movement, NEC also has wide array of solutions in the space of Warehousing, Gate Automations, Yard management, Asset management, Marketplace models, AI/ML/Block chain based offerings aimed at addressing Indian logistics challenges in terms of process enhancements, seamless movement, adopting best practices and creating value for the overall trade.

H

ow do you see the penetration of digitized solutions like AI, IoT, Blockchain, Machine Learning into India's Traditional or general Logistic sector? And if low, what needs to be done to scale it up going forward? Ans. The Internet of Things (IoT) offers limitless possibilities to revolutionize the world. And that holds for the logistic sector. Billions of tiny computers affixed to containers or ports could monitor processes and traffic patterns. And at NEC, we have already implemented this at various sites in India and abroad. NEC the WISE IoT Platform is a suite of functions for IoT systems based on NEC's cutting-edge AI technologies 'NEC the WISE.' Additionally, our blockchain technologies address problems of security and scalability and are devised specifically to meet industrial standards. For instance, our blockchain platform leverages a high performance Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus layer that is able to process up to 100,000 transactions per second when the network contains 200 blockchain nodes Currently, India is experimenting with emerging technologies in the logistics sector, and we expect that a significant change will take place in this sector especially in overcoming the supply chain issues. According to CII – Arthur D Little December 2020 report, logistics cost in India stands at 14% of GDP, compared to the global average of approximately 8%. India can benefit immensely with the implementation of emerging technologies including geo-tagging, big data and auto-capture. These enable collaboration, better forecasting, and traceability which intern monitors supply chains. We are doing our part by implementing NEC’s in-house solutions in various parts of the country.

W

hat is your message to the Indian trade looking for technological innovation solutions to ease their processes and save time? Ans. The transportation and Logistics is currently very on-site labor-intensive. While the level of service demand increases, the availability of the workforce fluctuates due to the rise in Coronavirus cases. This makes it difficult to maintain even current levels of services. Hence, to improve services, the industry must experiment with digital transformation and automation tools while at the same time work towards enhancing the skills of the labor aimed at upscaling their skills. Visibility & efciency provided by NEC improved India’s Logistics Performance : Girish Kumar Surpur of NEC Cont’d. from Pg. 4

Moreover, to cope with the existing challenges, the industry must employ human-machine partnership harmoniously to facilitate improved operational efficiency while ensuring safe and reliable logistics. For instance, NEC's Logistics Platform includes cutting-edge technologies such as AI, IoT, and image recognition, as well as NEC's supply chain related innovation know-how, which has been cultivated over many years. Hence, industry urgently needs a suite of systems supported by technology to create a logistics network that connects the departments of production, sales, and logistics through innovation of the logistics workplace.

A

ny other new developments of the company that would benet the Trade in general? Ans. NEC has plans to expand the portfolio and depth of its solutions and services both in the Indian market and globally. Leveraging key capabilities of our Global Development Centre (GDC) across sectors, including telecom, manufacturing, logistics, etc., is one of our crucial growth drivers. We promote an 'India Go Big' initiative by leveraging our solution development and delivery capability from India to aid global business growth. The set-up of the first 5G Open Radio Access Networks (ORAN) Laboratory in Chennai is a part of NEC's plan of 'In India For India and From India For global' strategy. This India lab complements the operations of NEC's Centre of Excellence in the UK. Our India team actively works with NEC's team in Japan to leverage the knowledge and best practices across geographies. Here are some of the latest developments and groundbreaking projects in the pipeline to empower the

Government and businesses: 1. Infusing next-gen technology to safety-securitysurveillance and shaping opportunity landscape across the country and Biometrics in Airports: • To ensure faster check-ins and citizens' safety, we deploy biometric technology at Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport in Varanasi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose airport in Kolkata, Pune airport, and Vijayawada airport. Besides the above four airports where we are currently deploying the system, we had done pilot projects for the solution at Hyderabad and Delhi Airport in the recent past • Awarded project from UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) for the Biometric Service Providers Phase III to provide large scale multi-modal biometrics solutions for the National Identification Program (Aadhaar), world's largest biometric national ID digital platform 2. Demonstrating unparalleled leadership in bringing efficiency to logistics operations: • We launched container tracking services at Pipavav Port, Rajula Saurashtra in Gujarat in November. With this expansion, NLDS would now be operational across 17 ports, handling 100% of India's container volume. 3. Enhancing public transport experience via new-age tech solutions implementation across Metro AFC, Smart City projects, Intelligent State Buses, and Metro Communication: • NEC India signed a strategic partnership with UMTC (a public sector unit under Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs; Government of India) to jointly develop intelligent mobility solutions in rural and urban India • We won the Mowasalat Qatar project for a period of 4 years to procure around 3000 smart buses to be used for Public Transportation during FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

Adani Ports waives charges for ships carrying COVID equipment, gives priority berthing AHMEDABAD: Adani Ports and SEZ (APSEZ), the nation's largest private sector operator of sea ports, has waived charges for ships exclusively carrying COVID-related equipment, and said such vessels will be given priority berthing. Billionaire Gautam Adani's group has also secured about two dozen cryogenic tanks for transporting medical oxygen, from the UAE, Thailand and Saudi Arabia, it said in a series of tweets. India is faced with the world's largest surge in COVID -19 cases, straining its already stressed healthcare infrastructure. Hospitals have faced oxygen shortage, and the private sector has lent a helping hand to aid the government. "In view of the requirement of oxygen and related equipment (medical grade oxygen, oxygen tanks,

oxygen bottles, portable oxygen generators, oxygen concentrators, steel pipes for manufacturing oxygen cylinders, etc.) it has been decided to give priority berthing to vessel carrying Covid-related cargo," APSEZ said on Twitter. Also, the ports operated by the firm "will not charge any storage or handling charges for these types of equipment, Covid-related cargo being handled in any mode of storage." "Additionally, the port will not charge any vessel-related charges for the vessels calling the port exclusively for Covid related equipment," it said. Stating that evacuation of such cargo will be given utmost priority, APSEZ asked all shipping lines and agencies to make a declaration of the subject cargo while declaring the vessel.

These measures, it said, will become applicable with immediate effect and will be valid for a period of 3 months. Separately, Adani Group said it has "secured 7 more cryogenic tanks" from Thailand. "Thank you @IndianEmbRiyadh. Indeed, actions speak louder than words. We are on an urgent mission to secure oxygen supplies from across the world. This first shipment of 4 ISO cryogenic tanks with 80 tons of liquid oxygen is now on its way from Dammam to Mundra," group chairman Gautam Adani had tweeted on April 24. "We would also like to thank Oman Shipping Line, a part of @AsyadGroup for going above and beyond to help us transport the 4 tank containers. Looking forward to our long-term relationship in battling this crisis and future endeavours," the Adani Group said.

Bangladesh suspends entry of people from India through land route but trade to continue DHAKA: Bangladesh has suspended the entry of people from India through the land route for two weeks starting from 26 April in view of the surging cases of COVID 19 in India.

Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen told the media in Dhaka recently that the passenger travel is being suspended for the time being but trade will continue.

International flights including flights between India and Bangladesh are already suspended since April 14 in response to rapid rise of COVID 19 cases in Bangladesh.

High freight rate, Container shortage to linger for 8 more months, feels MNSC KUALA LUMPUR: The exorbitant freight rates that were aggravated by the shortage of container supply are expected to remain in shippers’ finances for another eight months, said Malaysian National Shippers’ Council (MNSC). Based on MNSC’s survey in February, the response gathered from shippers indicated that the freight rates have skyrocketed to a historic level of between US$6,000 and US$10,000 (RM41,300) per container compared to US$55 to US$300 per container before the pandemic. “Covid-19 and its ensuing impacts have emerged as the top risk to global trade flow as they affect both supply and demand of goods. “Shippers, importers and exporters have been hit hard with a myriad of issues caused by disruptions in the

supply chain, which has not only severely impacted manufacturing activities but shipping activities as well. “Shippers continue to face container and vessel capacity shortage issues which have led to high freight rates,” MNSC Chairman Datuk Dr Ir Andy Seo Kian Haw was quoted as saying recently. Seo added that the surging freight rates are forcing foreign buyers to delay their orders with the anticipation that the shipment costs will decrease in the coming months to avoid losing out on export revenue. “Shippers are faced with difficult decisions daily on whether to ship and incur high export costs, or not to ship and lose their export markets. “While shippers are struggling with lengthening port delays, cargo rollovers and soaring freight rates, they have

been recently subject to an array of equipment and congestion surcharges including port congestion surcharge, equipment maintenance fee and deficit equipment surcharge imposed by the shipping lines,” he said. The skyrocketed shipping costs were contributed by several factors, including the booming of the Chinese economy post-pandemic, soaring demand following financial stimuli and congestion at main sea ports. The issues have been creating a ripple effect since the global economies began taking the first steps towards recovery at the end of last year. Seo said shippers are coping with the situation by rationalising the limited container, vessel space and cargo with their customers, and navigating rescheduling to the earliest possible delivery date to suit the demand.

Baltic Index hits highest in over 10 years powered by Capesizes LONDON: The Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight index on Monday, 26th April 2021 drifted up to its highest since September 2010, as an uptick in rates for the larger capesize segment offset a drop in panamax vessel demand. The Baltic dry index, which tracks rates for capesize, panamax and supramax vessels ferrying dry bulk commodities, edged up 20 points, or 0.7%, to 2,808, a high since September 2010.

The capesize index was up 70 points, or 1.7%, to 4,262, a peak since July 3, 2020. Av e r a g e d a i l y e a r n i n g s f o r capesizes, which typically transport 150,000-tonne cargoes of coal and steelmaking ingredient iron ore, gained $585 at $35,347. Chinese steel futures closed at alltime highs on Monday, underpinned by robust demand and concerns over

production curbs, while benchmark iron ore prices hit record highs, fuelled by structural supply shortage. The panamax index fell 44 points, or 1.7%, to 2,586. Av e r a g e d a i l y e a r n i n g s f o r panamaxes, which usually carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 tonnes to 70,00 tonnes, lost $396 to $23,271. The supramax index rose 23 points to an over one-month high of 2,108.

Snowman Logistics ends the year on a high note • Well posi oned for mass distribu on of covid vaccine • Expansion plans in high yield loca ons • Dedicated Amazon warehouse at Kundli opera onal • Launched technology pla orm 'Snowlink' to aggregate transport capacity and offer end-to-end solu ons to customers BENGALURU: During the quarter ended March 31, 2021, Snowman Logistics Ltd recorded a revenue of INR. 64.11 Crores as against INR 60.98 Crores for the same period in the previous year. EBITDA increased to INR 17.80 Crores from INR 15.99 Crores for the same period in the previous year and PAT increased to INR (0.42) Crores from INR (1.17) Crores in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. On an annual basis, revenue during 2020-21 was INR 237.10 Crores as against INR 240.20 Crores during the previous year. The revenue drop was mainly in the transport vertical due to vehicle movement restrictions during the initial lockdown period. EBITDA increased to INR 68.47 Crores from INR 64.06 Crores mainly due to margin improvements in warehousing i.e., from 38% in FY20 to 42% in FY21 and

PAT increased to INR 6 Lakhs from a loss of INR (1501) Lakhs during the previous year. Speaking about the quarter performance, Mr. Sunil Nair, CEO, Snowman Logistics Limited said, “Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, we ramped up operations to ensure that there are no ser vice disruptions, and we continue to meet the demands of our clients. Our ECommerce business model has started contributing to our revenue, and we are quite optimistic about it. In addition, we have launched a tech platform to aggregate refrigerated transport fleets across the country and offer end-to-end solutions to our customers. This will help small truck operators to be part of the organised sector with us. We see a promising model here benefiting all the stakeholders i.e., transport partners, our customers, and Snowman." Commenting on the results, M r. Pr e m K i s h a n D a s s G u p t a ,

Chairman, Snowman Logistics Limited said, “The year has ended on a high note for us. We are now present in 16 cities and have successfully implemented a new service vertical for managing the backend for e-commerce fulfilment centres. The dedicated Amazon warehouse at Kundli, serving Delhi, is operational now in addition to Mumbai and Pune with plans to expand in more locations in the coming year. Furthermore, we have created a new pharma vertical and have started h a n d l i n g d i s t r i b u t i o n o f C OV I D vaccines in some regions, with plans for Pan-India storage and distribution for which we are in advanced talks with all relevant stakeholders. Our new projects at Siliguri & Coimbatore are under construction, along with expansion in the existing facilities of Mumbai & Krishnapatnam due to high demand. We are confident that Snowman will continue to remain the leader of its industry.”

Panama Maritime Authority approves Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) to conduct remote surveys M U M B A I : Leading flag administration, Panama Maritime Authority has authorised Indian Register of Shipping Mr. Vijay Arora ( I R C l a s s ) , a n international ship classification society, to conduct specific surveys through remote inspection techniques. As the maritime world continues to reel under the shadow of the pandemic induced travel restrictions, IRClass ensured that ships continue to stay compliant with various IMO conventions and sail with valid certificates. Alternative means were adopted for evidence compliance by IRClass since 2020 when the travel restrictions were first introduced. IRClass has developed remote survey capability for specific types of inspections using an online remote

survey application backed up by a dedicated team which can support vessels anywhere in the world. It has developed the necessary remote survey guidelines which were released earlier this year. A dedicated facility with the requisite IT infrastructure has been put in place at its head office in Mumbai. Fo l l o w i n g t h i s authorisation, IRClass can now conduct Interim ISM/ ISPS & MLC audits, occasional in-water surveys and radio surveys which have been attended by a radio firm for ships under Panama Flag. Any other remote sur veys will be undertaken after receiving specific authorisation from Panama Flag on a case-by-case basis. IRClass shall also be approaching other flags to be able undertake such surveys. Mr. Vijay Arora, Joint Managing Director of IRClass said: “We are glad to receive the authorisation from Panama flag for conduct of remote surveys for Interim ISM/ ISPS & MLC

audits, occasional in-water surveys and radio surveys. This authorisation will help us provide our services during the continued pandemic condition till the situation normalises to enable conduct of physical surveys. Our customers can benefit from access to our surveyors from any location in the world, faster completion along with documented evidence of survey completion. With the help of documentation, images, video (livestreaming and recordings), inputs provided by the Ship Manager and crew, IRClass provides the same level of assurance as an on-board survey.”

Oxygen shortage: Govt imports 20 cryogenic tankers, allocates them to States NEW DELHI: The Centre has imported 20 cryogenic tankers of 10 MT and 20 MT capacity and allocated them to states to address the shortage of oxygen tankers in the country as it deals with spiralling cases of COVID-19. As mapping of liquid medical oxygen (LMO) from manufacturing plants to different states is a dynamic process

and transportation of medical oxygen through cryogenic tankers is becoming a bottleneck in making available LMO from the eastern part of the country to other parts, 20 cryogenic ISO ISO containers of capacity 20 MT and 10 MT have been imported to augment the transportation of oxygen, the Union Health Ministry said recently.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in consultation with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade under the overall guidance of the Empowered Group-II have mapped the allocation of these containers to suppliers in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi, the ministry said in the statement.
