India needs to improve its Customs clearance framework to become Export hub : DP World Chairman & CEO
NEWDELHI:ThereisanurgentneedtoreformtheCustoms clearance framework in India if the country wants to become an export hub according to Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group ChairmanandChiefExecutiveOfcer,DPWorld
Speaking at the B20 Summit India 2023, organised in collaboration of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Sulayem said, “If you (India) want to become an export country, then the laws have to be changed. You have to be more liberal, to allow people to export and fast track exports,
remove many of the restrictions and Customs.”
He said that while there are rules around Customs clearances, the departments around the world are slow to adopt, hampering trade. “Customs (Department) is key today and they need to be improved Procedures need to be digitised If Customs can coordinate with Customs Departments of other countries, it is better than even free trade,” Sulayem said, adding that the “biggest problem” in every country is Customs.

India, Greece target doubling bilateral trade by 2030: PM Modi
ATHENS: India and Greece plan to double their bilateral trade by 2030, announced Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi during his official visit to the Country The bilateral trade stood at nearly $2 billion in 2022-23.
India mainly exports aluminum, organic chemicals, fish and crustaceans and iron and steel to Greece, among other things. Meanwhile, Greece’s top exports to India are minerals fuels, mineral oils and products, sulphur and aluminium foil.
Both sides will also sign a migration and mobility agreement to improve the flow of people and talent between the two countries. Mint had reported on this development in August. The two countries also agreed to elevate bilateral ties to the level of a “strategic partnership”.
Prime Minister Modi met with his counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece, for leaderlevel talks.
“The discussions covered various dimensions of the bilateral partnership, including trade and investment, defense and security, technology, infrastructure, digital payments, shipping, pharma, agriculture,
migration and mobility, tourism, skill development, culture, education and people to people ties. They also discussed regional and multilateral issues, including the EU, Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean. They called for respect of international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” according to a press release from the Ministry of External Affairs.
Prime Minister Modi also met with Greece’s President Katerina N. Sakellaropoulou.
India and Greece have enjoyed a close relationship for years.
India's heart with US rather than China-led trade pact RCEP : Piyush Goyal
NEW DELHI: At a session with Chinese and US Trade Ministers, Union Minister Piyush Goyal recently said India did not join China-led RCEP as its trade deficit would have widened and New Delhi's "heart" is with Washington, hinting at the trade surplus with the US. The Commerce and Industry Minister's remarks at the B20 summit in the national capital while moderating the 'Trade Ministers' Session' where Wang Shouwen, Vice Minister in the Ministry of Commerce of China and US Trade Representative Katherine Tai were present.
Goyal asked Wang if Beijing regretted that India chose not to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). To this, Wang said China and India's trade relationship has been growing very fast and last year, the bilateral trade reached USD 130 billion.
"If there had been an FTA agreement between China and India, either bilaterally or in RCEP context, the trade potential (that) exists between our two countries will be much further tapped in to the benefit of our two peoples. So, it is your decision to decide whether you will join RCEP but the RCEP door will be always open to India," Wang said.
Responding to the comment, Goyal said the bilateral trade would have gone up, but also the trade deficit.
"We are already concerned that the bilateral trade even though USD 130 billion is largely skewed in favour of China The Indian industry feels that if you had entered into this agreement with the RCEP this trade would have suddenly increased, but it would only have
increased the trade deficit further "
The Indian Minister also wondered how China does the costing and pricing of goods it exports.
"...it's a matter that I think all the Ministers would like to know how you can supply goods at less than the raw material costs," Goyal asked.
In reply, Wang congratulated Goyal for being a very successful Trade Minister for India.
"...even though you are not able to balance your trade with each and every ... trading partner, you have been very successful in maintaining a global trade balance overall for the Country. "So it is natural that you will have trade deficits with countries like China, but you will also have a trade surplus with other countries. It is very good that you are able to maintain your trade balance globally," he added.
With the US, India enjoyed a trade surplus of about USD 28 billion during 2022-23, while there was a deficit of about USD 83 billion with China, as per the Commerce Ministry data.
"The Chairman had retorted that his heart was on the left-hand side. So my heart here is with (USTR) Katherine Tai from the United States of America (who was sitting on Goyal's left side)," the Indian trade minister said amid applause from the audience, largely comprising domestic and global business leaders.
Goyal also applauded the USTR's leadership in bilaterally resolving six out of seven disputes at WTO between India.

Govt to decide on New Freight Corridors soon : Chairman, Railway Board
NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Railways will soon take a call on taking up three proposed dedicated freight corridors (DFCs) worth at least Rs 2.35 trillion, Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board Anil Kumar Lahoti said recently Lahoti was speaking during an internal review of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) when he told the chief general managers of the public sector undertaking (PSU) that the railway board has received detailed project reports (DPRs) for the new corridors
The three proposed corridors — East-West Corridor, North-South Corridor, and East Coast Corridor were conceptualised in 2020 in the wake of the Centre’s aim to increase the modal share of railways to 45 per cent in national logistics by 2030 from the present 27 per cent.
A DPR is the foundational document for any infrastructure project to be undertaken. It contains
geographical estimates, location surveys, compliance burdens, and financial assessments.
Planning for the corridors took a long time due to uncertainties over the future of the plan along with a change in approach by the railway board, where it sought an alternate approach of enhancing existing corridors over building new DFCs, this paper had reported in May 2022.
The proposed 1,115-kilometre (km) East Coast Corridor starts from Kharagpur (near Hijli station of IR), passes through Rupsa, Jakhapura, Haridaspur, Rajatgarh, Khurda Road, N a u p a d a , V i z a N a g a r , Vishakhapatanam and ends near north of Vijayawada Station.
The proposed East–West DFC is p l a n n e d b e t w e e n K o l k a t a (Andal/Dankuni) to Bhusawal in Maharashtra, with an approximate length of 1,868 kilometre.This, earlier, was expected to be integrated with the partly operational eastern DFC which was to be built up to Andal.
However, the Union Cabinet committee on economic affairs recently decided to scrap the DFC and build regular rail tracks from Bihar to Andal.
The third corridor or North–South DFC will start from Vijayawada to Itarsi covering 975 kilometre through Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
According to a projection by railway- owned consulting firm RITES, the East-West corridor is slated to account for 449 million tonne (mt) of freight in the coming years, while the east coast corridor would handle 405 mt by 2031-32.
Currently, 200 trains are running on DFCCIL tracks daily, which will be scaled up substantially over time, Lahoti said at the event.
“The organisation should leverage the liberal Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal (GCT) policy to maximize the number of GCTs along its alignment,” he told the PSU’s officials.
