Emanuele Grimaldi appointed ICS Chairman LONDON: The board of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), representing 80% of the world’s merchant fleet, today appointed EmanueleGrimaldi, President and Managing Director of GrimaldiEuromedSpA, as Chairman of the Board. Grimaldi, a former president of both Confitarma and European Community Shipowners Association (ECSA), was formally voted in as chair by the ICS Board of Directors, following the announcement of his nomination last year. Alongside ICS Secretary General, Guy Platten, his mandate will include working to find private and public solutions to a range of issues facing the sector, including decarbonisation, digitisation, diversity, and crew change. He succeeds current chair, EsbenPoulsson, Executive Chairman ENESEL PTE. LTD., who has served as ICS Chair since 2016, and who steps down after serving three terms of office. EmanueleGrimaldi, ICS Chairman, commented on his appointment: “I am honored to represent the shipping industry at this crucial juncture in our history. I hope to build on the legacy of my predecessor EsbenPoulsson, and continue to drive meaningful change within the sector and work closely with UN bodies. “The world is changing, and shipping must change with it. Fundamental transformation to our fuel supplies, our technology, and the skillsets of our workforce will define the direction shipping takes this decade. I’m excited to say that we are confronting the challenge head on. “While we are not immune from the challenges that face
the global economy, we are resilient. I am confident that the sector will remain a force for good on the international stage, facilitating the movement of vital supplies to those who need them most.” This Saturday, June 25, the maritime sector will come together to honor the hard work and sacrifice of the 1.8 million seafarers who crew the global fleet, celebrating the UN Day of Emanuele Grimaldi and Esben Poulsson the Seafarer. This year’s theme is ‘Your voyage – then and now, share your journey,’ looking at seafarer voyages, and how they have both evolved and stayed the same throughout the history of this essential profession. Guy Platten, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping, remarked: “I’m pleased to welcome longtime board member, EmanueleGrimaldi, to the position of Chairman. I have full faith in him and look forward to working closely together to advance the maritime sector and support our seafarers. “I cannot thank outgoing chair, EsbenPoulsson, enough for his six years of leadership and companionship. Expertly navigating ICS through several major events, including the Covid-19 crew change crisis, a rise in piracy, and the Suez Canal blockage.”

India’s Engineering exports rise 13.5 % to $9.79 bn in May : EEPC India Analysis NEW DELHI : Exports of engineering goods from India surged by 13.5 per cent to $9.79 billion in May 2022 from $8.62 billion recorded in the same month last year, according to EEPC India monthly analysis of export trends. Cumulative engineering exports for April-May 2022-23 were recorded at $19.39 billion, which is 16.84 per cent higher when compared with $16.60 billion of exports recorded in the corresponding period of the last year. The US remained the top market for Indian engineering goods in May, while shipments to China declined. As many as 18 out of 25 major markets for Indian engineering goods recorded positive growth in May 2022. Exports to the US surged 63.2 per cent year-on-year to $1.81 billion in May this year as compared to $1.11 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year. Among other countries which recorded positive growth in imports from India in the month of May included Germany, Singapore, the UK, Italy, and Thailand. Exports of engineering goods to China, however, declined 52 per cent year-on-year in May 2022 to $217.4 million as compared to $451.7 million in the same month last year. The top 25 countries contribute almost 75 per cent of total engineering exports from India. In terms of region, maximum growth in exports was witnessed in North America followed by the EU in both monthly and cumulative terms. The share of engineering in total merchandise exports was recorded at 25.14 per cent in May while the share was 24.64 per cent for April-May 2022-23. Commenting on engineering exports trends so far in this fiscal, EEPC India Chairman Mahesh Desai said, “Although the trend looks impressive, some concerns are still there.
One of the biggest concerns is the Russia-Ukraine war that has severely hampered shipments to CIS nations and may have some ripple effect on the global economy.” He noted that the resurgence of COVID and subsequent damage of business prospects in some industrial cities may also impact the global trade scenario adversely. “Rising oil and commodity prices have added to the uncertainty. A sharp depreciation of the rupee, although can help exports for the time being, continuous weakening may be damaging for the economy. At this juncture, signing of new FTA with UAE and Australia and ongoing negotiations with a number of developed nations may help exports from India to rise,” Desai said. As many as 28 out of 34 engineering panels witnessed positive year-on-year growth in exports during May 2022 vis-a-vis May 2021. Some of the engineering products including `Copper and its products’, ‘ Tin and products’, `Ships, boats and floating structures’, ‘Bicycle and Parts’, ‘Prime Mica and Products’ conceded decline in year-on-year exports during May 2022. Similarly, on a cumulative basis also, 28 out of 34 engineering panels recorded positive growth during April-May 2022-23 over the same period last fiscal. The data shows exports of iron and steel and its products rose 16 per cent in May to $2.63 billion as compared to $2.26 billion. The trend in exports of non-ferrous metals and products were also positive during May with the total exports rising 21 per cent year-on-year to $1.31 billion. The engineering industry has achieved 15.3 per cent of the target of $127 billion (for FY23) in the first two months of
World Bank approves $245 mn loan to modernise India’s Railway logistics LONDON : The World Bank has approved a USD 245 million loan to support India’s efforts to modernise rail freight and logistics infrastructure, the international financial institution said in a statement . The Rail Logistics project will help India shift more traffic from road to rail, making transport — both freight and passenger — more efficient and reducing millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) each year. The project will also incentivise more private sector investment in the railway sector. Indian Railways is the fourth-largest rail network in the world having transported 1.2 billion tonnes of freight in the fiscal ending March 2020. Yet, 71 per cent of India’s freight is transported by road and only 17 per cent by rail. The statement also said that the capacity constraints of Indian Railways have limited the volumes and reduced the speed and reliability of shipments. As a result, it has been losing market share to trucks over the years; in 2017-18, its market share was 32 per cent, down from 52 per cent a decade earlier. Road freight is the largest contributor to GHG emissions, accounting for about 95 per cent of emissions in the freight sector. Trucks also accounted for about 12.3 per cent of road accidents and 15.8 per cent of total road transport-related deaths in 2018. Rail emits about one-fifth of trucks’ GHG emissions, and
with Indian Railways planning to become a net-zero carbon emitter by 2030, it has the potential to eliminate 7.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases each year, it added. “While reducing greenhouse gases, the new project will also benefit millions of rail passengers in India as railway lines get decongested with freight moving to dedicated lines,” said Hideki Mori, Operations Manager and Acting Country Director, India, World Bank. The new Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor-3 (EFDC) is also supported by the World Bank. The statement said that a major focus of the project will be on harnessing commercial financing by engaging the private sector and developing customer- oriented approaches. The project will also support the institutional capacity strengthening of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) as a commercial organisation and equip it to provide multimodal logistics services. “India is increasingly focused on multimodal transport, particularly with railways as the central pillar of efficient logistics in the freight transport segment,” said Saroj Ayush and Martha B Lawrence, World Bank Task Team Leaders for the project. “The project will help leverage private sector efficiency for integrating rail transportation into cargo supply chains.”
Adani JV : Colombo Port West Container Terminal COLOMBO : The Colombo Port’s West Container Terminal (WCT), a joint venture of the Adani Group of India, the Sri Lankan company John Keells (JKH) and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), will be able to receive its first ships in 2024, according to Rohan Maskarola, Chief Executive Officer of the Shippers’ Academy of Colombo. The preliminary works are being carried out and it is hoped that the first berth will be
ready in 2024, Maskarola said. There has been a delay due to the current economic difficulties but work is on, he added. Meanwhile, the website reported that the Sri Lankan partner in WCT, John Keells Holdings (JKH), is to borrow US$ 75 million from a Canadian financial institution through privately placed debentures. Out of this, US$ 70 million will be invested in the WCT.

Govt. to set Export target for FY23 in July NEW DELHI - In a year marred by multiple uncertainties, the Union Government is studying the initial trade trends of the first quarter and plans to set a “realistic” export target for FY23 in the first week of July, a Commerce and Industry Ministry official said recently. Exports estimates assume significance as the World Bank expects a sharp decline in global growth from 5.7% in 2021 to 2.9% this year due to the supply and trade disruptions triggered by the Russia-Ukraine war. “Global macroeconomic fundamentals have not been upbeat lately, especially due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Ever since the Fed began raising interest rates, there is a growing chance global growth could get impacted. So, the ministry is looking at the trend in the first few months. A realistic target will be given to the embassies and export promotion councils, and it will be announced next month,” the official said. Another official said many exporters have not been able to provide a clear picture with regards to what they can achieve. However, he added that the initial disruption in the Russian route has eased and the majority of stuck payments have been unblocked. “Expecting the same export growth rate on a high base would not be realistic. The global disruption will impact trade in Asia. Besides, a prolonged lockdown in China is worrying not only for India but for the entire global supply chain,” the second official added. Commerce Secretary B.V.R. Subrahmanyam was recently quoted as saying that exports during the first quarter could come in at $116 bn and that the first quarter has been encouraging. “First quarter is usually 22% of the total exports. Going by the current projection the total exports of FY23 could cross half a trillion dollars,” Subrahmanyam said.
Notably, in FY22, India exceeded its export target to clock record merchandise shipments of $420 billion. The growth was led by a surge in engineering and electronic goods shipments. However, imports surged at a record pace as well, pushing the trade deficit to a record high. India’s merchandise trade deficit ballooned to a record $24.29 billion in May, driven by a surge in gold imports, exerting more pressure on the domestic currency. Elevated commodity prices in the wake of the war in Ukraine have kept merchandise imp-orts above $60 billion for the third month in a row. Economists said that rising uncertainty due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine could worsen the trade deficit and widen the current account deficit, as global oil prices are likely to remain elevated, while supply-side bottlenecks and rising freight costs may hurt exports. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the need to set long-term export targets. He added that the government has raised export targets and has doubled its efforts to achieve them. “Global trade growth is anticipated to slow to 4% in 2022 as the war in Ukraine further disrupts global value chains, global activity gradually shifts back toward the less trade intensive services sector, and international mobility moves toward pre-pandemic levels only gradually,” the World Bank said in a report. However, global trade growth is expected to moderate to an average of 4.1% in 2023-24 as global demand for tradable goods continues to decelerate, the report further added. Rising food prices have already forced India to announce export curbs on commodities such as wheat and sugar. As per World Bank forecasts, agricultural prices could rise 18% this year, above previous projections.
Exporters’ Rebate scheme to get yet another revamp : Sources NEW DELHI : The Government is looking to overhaul a new-look tax rebate scheme for exporters merely eight months after launch, sources aware of the matter said, after complaints from the industry that the scheme is eroding their margins. The Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies (RoSCTL) scheme, introduced in October, provides rebate against taxes and levies already paid by exporters on inputs. The rebate is not given as cash but as tradeable scrips, which exporters can sell to importers. Importers can then use these scrips to pay customs duty, instead of paying in cash. However, exporters complain these scrips are trading at a steep 20% discount, defeating the purpose of the scheme. As of now, these scrips can be traded even before export realization, with the liability falling on importers. The government feels the scrips are trading at a discount because of this risk component, and plans to make them tradeable only after full export payments are received, which would eliminate the risk factor. It is also likely to double the eligibility of these scrips to 24 months from 12 months now. “We are aware of the issues faced by exporters under the RoSCTL scheme and the fact that they are unable to fully benefit from the scheme. We are analysing the reasons and discussing options to address these. Suitable changes will be made in the current scheme after consultations and review,” a Government source said.
Another official said one of the options is to allow transfer of scrips only after export realization, to address the issue of liability falling on importers who buy these scrips. “If the trading happens only after export realization, the eligibility period of the scrip could be increased from 12 months to 24 months. That way, the government’s outgo would also get spread over two years,” he said. The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), in a statement, said the scheme in its current form is eroding export margins of the domestic textile industry. Garment units say they are facing losses of ?1,200 crore with the discount on tradeable scrips rising from 3% to about 20%, benefitting importers who are taking undue advantage at the cost of exporters. Representatives from the Federation of Indian Export Organisations, an apex body of exporters, met finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman a couple of weeks ago to request changes to the RoSCTL scheme. Ajay Sahai, Director General and CEO, FIEO, said the government is looking into the issue and it is likely to be resolved soon. “It is logical to allow trading after export realization. That way, the government will not even have to monitor the foreign exchange. Scrips should not be allowed prior to realization,” he said. Exports payments are generally realized in two to three months.
Forex reserves fell $11 billion in last three weeks Mumbai - India’s foreign exchange reserves fell by $5.87 billion in the week ending June 17 as foreign portfolio investors continued withdrawing their investments from local equities amid global risk-off sentiment following growing concerns over global slowdown. This is the third straight week of fall in forex reserves after a temporary reversal. In the last three weeks, reserves dwindled by $10.785
billion to $590.588 billion, Reserve Bank of India’s latest data showed. Economists anticipate that India’s forex reserves, which provides a cushion against any external risks, may fall further to about $565 billion by the end of FY23 as the Asian economy would use its capital account to finance current account deficits which is projected to widen to over 3% of GDP in FY23.

World Economic Forum : 3 Digital Innovations making Global Trade easier, faster and safer • • • •
Global trade has been disrupted by the war in Ukraine, COVID-19 and other supply chain blockages. In the digital age, new tools and systems can help streamline global trade. These include non-fungible tokens, digital IDs and digital trade agreements. A single digital identity that could allow any organization to trade globally is the ideal, says the World Economic Forum.
DAVOS – The Global trade is under pressure. The war in Ukraine has led to worldwide disruption, with global output predicted to drop 1%. And that’s after COVID-19 triggered some of the biggest falls in global trade since World War II. But the pandemic also showed us the power of digital technology to keep the world going. For international importers and exporters, digital trade systems and tools offer huge opportunities. Here are three developments helping to make global trade smoother and safer. Non-fungible Tokens Non-fungible tokens – NFTs for short – are a form of secure digital ownership. They are unique digital tokens that can be used to buy, own and sell digital or physical items online, according to business news website Business Insider. This might include real estate, art or music. It might be an image, 3D model, document, or anything else, says FinTech Magazine. These digital signatures can’t be altered or faked in any way, meaning new possibilities for handling sensitive data. NFTs can also streamline international trade by removing document fraud and the need for multiple regulatio ns a nd hu m a n interventions along supply chains, FinTech adds. In 2021, more than $17 billion of NFTs were traded globally, up 21,000% from $82 million in 2020, reports payments news site PYMNTS.com.0 seconds of 1 minute, 41 secondsVolume 90%
Digital IDs Before trade can happen, businesses need to verify each other’s identity. Instead of using paper documents like passports and driving licences, digital IDs are a way of verifying identities remotely over digital channels, explains research specialist, McKinsey Global Institute. The World Trade Organization (WTO) says digital IDs can apply to people, organizations or things. They’re now critical to a wide range of international trade transactions and processes. For example, drawing up contracts, exchanging
data, bringing new suppliers or partners on board and complying with regulations related to the environment, counterterrorism, finance and other areas. Digital ID systems are typically used by government agencies like customs and business registration. But as trade becomes more digital, so does the need for a digital ID system that works globally across borders and not just in specific sectors, the WTO says. In its work on Global Trade Identity, the World Economic Forum explores the use of a single digital ID that could allow any organization to trade globally.
Digital Trade Agreements Digital trade agreements are a package of measures between governments designed to make trade easier in the digital age. In February this year, the United Kingdom signed a digital trade deal with Singapore that includes shared digital systems for e-invoicing, e-payments and other electronic documents, according to law firm Pinsent Masons. The UK government said the deal would “end outdated rules” for exporters of goods and ser vices, cut costs and “pave the way for [a] new era of modern trade”. Singapore has also signed a digital trade agreement with Chile and New Zealand. The deal is designed to help trade flow between different regimes, with benefits including enhanced security, quicker cargo clearance and faster payment processing. The World Economic Forum is working with partners to develop a unified set of global rules for digital trade. In a blog, Ziyang Fan and Mike Gallaher of the Forum’s digital trade team say: “Existing digital trade rules are outdated, complex and fragmented, if they exist at all.” They argue that modernizing digital trade rules would advance digital trade, create more jobs, lower costs and reduce inefficiencies.
China delivers World’s largest 24,000 TEU Containership SHANGHAI : The World’s Largest Container Ship, the first of its kind made by China, was delivered on last Wednesday in the coastal city of Shanghai. The Ever Alot has a capacity of 24,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), the measurement used to determine cargo capacity for container ships and ports and based on the volume of a 20-foot-long (6.1-meter) standardsized container. It was designed by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation, with complete independent intellectual property rights. The ship is 399.99 meters long, over 60 meters longer than the largest aircraft carrier in the world, and 61.5 meters wide, with a deck area of 24,000 square meters, equivalent to 3.5 standard football fields.
With a cargo compartment of 33.2 meters deep, it can carry 240,000 tonnes of cargo packed in more than 24,000 standard containers at a time, a global high. Containers can be stacked to a maximum height equivalent to a 22-story building. The vessel also features energy-saving designs. The shipbuilder has adopted the latest hydrodynamic optimization technologies, allowing the vessel to carry heavy loads at high speed with low fuel consumption. It will serve the route from the Far East to Europe after put into operation. Hudong-Zhonghua has previously delivered nearly 70 container ships with a capacity of above 8,000 TEU and is working on a total of nine ultra-large container ships of 24,000 TEU, ranking first among major Chinese shipyards.

Drewry : Smart Container fleet to expand 8-fold over the next 5 years LONDON - The global telematics enabled container equipment fleet is forecast to grow 8-fold over the next 5 years and account for 25% of global box inventories by 2026, driven by wider adoption across the dry container fleet. This is one of the main conclusions from Drewry’s latest Container Census & Leasing Annual Review & Forecast 2022/23 report, to be published later this month. Smart containers have increased in prominence following the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and resultant supply chain disruption which has highlighted the need for better cargo visibility to cope with longer and more volatile transit times. And the pace of adoption of smart containers is expected to accelerate over the next five years. A container becomes “smart” when fitted with a telematics device that provides real-time tracking and monitoring, enabling operators to increase turn time of their containers and so improve equipment availability. It also allows beneficial cargo owners (BCOs) to understand the location and status of their cargo so that they can better control their supply chains. There are a number of factors driving this market growth. Continued supply chain disruption and port congestion, which show no sign of abating, are driving the need for improved visibility of cargo flows and container fleet management. Carriers are flush with cash to invest and see opportunities to improve the efficiency of their operations through the deployment of smart containers. Drewry estimates that by the end of 2021 around 3.6% of the global container equipment fleet was fitted with smart technology devices following growth of over 30% through the year. However, take-up varies considerably by equipment type, with penetration already strong in reefer and intermodal containers but much lower in the dry box sector. Already as much as a third of the maritime reefer container fleet is smart-enabled, while the figure is over 40% for intermodal containers, according to Drewry estimates. Drewry forecasts that the number of smart containers in
the global fleet will accelerate in the five years to 2026 to reach over 8.7 million units, representing as much as 25% of worldwide box inventories. As technological innovation lowers the cost of devices and enhances their value to both transport operators and BCOs, uptake is expected to hasten.Smart fleet acceleration will now be driven by strong uptake in the dry container fleet where penetration is currently as little as 0.3%, according to Drewry estimates. Hapag-Lloyd’s recent announcement that it intends equipping its entire dry box fleet with smart devices will force other leading carriers to follow suit. Shipping line return on investment will come from the potential to optimise their box fleet and cargo operations. Past initiatives to develop the dry smart fleet failed because they relied on BCO demand which was deterred by additional fees and lack of integration into carrier IoT service offerings. Furthermore, digitising their container fleets will enable carriers to better control maritime supply chain information flows, enhancing their cargo visibility offering and so tethering BCO clients into longer term contractual commitments. They face increasing competition from alternative tracking solutions such as removable devices or predictive analytical tools. But to achieve this step change will
require further investment to integrate smart containers into carrier IoT systems and collaboration among industry stakeholders to enable data sharing, particularly between carrier alliance and VSA partners. In the meantime shipping line focus will be on building critical mass of smart device installs to leverage operational benefits across their container fleets and cargo operations, while readying for the next step change in supply chain visibility service offerings.
Amazon invests Rs 375 crore in its Indian Logistics arm BANGALORE : E-commerce firm Amazon has invested Rs 375 crore in its Indian logistics arm, Amazon Transportation Services, according to filings sourced from business intelligence platform Tofler. The cash infusion happened on June 16 through Amazon’s entities in Singapore and Mauritius – Amazon Corporate Holding Pvt Ltd and Amazon.com.incs Ltd. The investment comes at a time when Amazon is on boarding more local sellers on its marketplace. Amazon India Country Manager Manish Tiwary told that the company would need “a couple of million more sellers” to attract 500 million more customers to Amazon. Amazon India currently has 1.1 million sellers on its
platform. Its total user base is more than 100 million. Last month, Amazon launched Smart Commerce, an initiative that will help offline stores set up their own digital storefronts, in addition to selling on its India marketplace. This is similar to what Canada-based Shopify does. Amazon will enable these stores to sell on its marketplace and other platforms and logistics is one of the services provided through Smart Commerce and will enable sellers to sell on platforms outside Amazon. Through Smart Commerce, Amazon said stores of any size can now tap Amazon’s expertise in shopping, logistics, digital payments, and other areas to serve their consumers better, both digitally and in physical stores.

On Gautam Adani’s 60th Birthday, the Adani Family commits Rs 60,000 Cr to charity Dona on to be u lized in healthcare, educa on, and skill development HYDERABAD: On the year of the centenary birth anniversary of Gautam Adani’s father Shri Shantilal Adani, and Gautam Adani’s own 60th birthday, the Adani Family has committed a donation of Rs 60,000 crore to a range of social causes. This corpus will be administered by the Adani Foundation. To utilize the potential of India’s demographic advantage, there is an ever growing need to focus on the areas of healthcare, education, and skill development. The shortfalls in each of these areas are roadblocks for an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat.’ The Adani Foundation has gained rich experience in working with communities focussed on integrated
development efforts across all these areas. Addressing these challenges can significantly enhance the competence and competitiveness of our future workforce. “In addition to being the 100th birth anniversary of my inspiring father, this year also happens to be the year of my 60th birthday and therefore the family decided to contribute Rs. 60,000 crores towards charitable activities related to healthcare, education, and skill development, especially in the rural regions of our nation”. said Mr. Gautam Adani,
Chairman, Adani Group. “At a very fundamental level, programs related to all these three areas should be seen holistically and they collectively form the drivers to build an equitable and futureready India. Our experience in large project planning and execution and the learnings from the work done by the Adani Foundation will help us uniquely accelerate these programs. This contribution from the Adani Family intends to draw upon some of the brightest minds that have a passion to make a difference in the Adani Foundation’s journey to do more towards fulfilling our ‘Growth with Goodness’ philosophy.” On this occasion, Mr. Azim Premji, Chairman of Azim Premji Foundation and Founder Chairman of Wipro Limited and widely recognized as one of the greatest philanthropists of our times said, “Gautam Adani and his family’s commitment towards philanthropy should set an example that we can all try to live Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of Trusteeship of Wealth at the peak of our business success and need not wait for our sunset years”. He further added “the challenges and possibilities of our country demand that we work together as one, cutting across all divides of wealth, region, religion, caste, and more. I wish Gautam Adani and his Foundation the very best in this important national endeavor” Over the years, the Adani Foundation has responded to society’s changing needs in alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – be it sustainable livelihoods, health and nutrition, and education for all or addressing environmental concerns – with an enhanced focus on the e mpo we r me nt o f w o me n, wo r k ing w ith mu ltiple stakeholders at the grassroots. Today, it covers 3.7 million people in 2,409 villages across 16 states in India.
Höegh Autoliners is sailing for sustainability OSLO: “With our almost 100 years of maritime experience, Höegh Autoliners’ roots are Norwegian, but our perspective is global. And green. Sustainability is very much at the core of our operations. At Höegh Autoliners we don’t just talk about being green in 10- or 20-years’ time. We act on it. Now. Every day we focus on reducing the emissions from our existing fleet. Every improvement - also small ones - counts on our path to zero. Since 2008, we have improved fuel efficiency in our fleet significantly and are well on track to meeting IMO’s 2030 target of 40% improvement. We are proud of that, but we don't stop there. HöeghAutoliners has a clear ambition to reach net zero by 2040. That is why we have initiated an extensive green fleet renewal program with the launch of our zero-carbon ready Aurora Class vessel design. The Aurora Class vessels will be the first in the PCTC segment to receive DNV’s ammonia and methanol ready notations with main engine provided by MAN and bridge system supplied by Kongsberg. The vessel’s design includes 1500 square meters of solar panels. In addition, the Aurora will be ready for receiving
electric shore power for zero emission operations while vessel is at port. By being the largest (capacity to carry up to 9,100 cars) and most environmentally friendly car carriers ever to be built, our Aurora newbuilding program is a definitive step in our commitment to a net zero emissions future by 2040. The Aurora class has been designed with flexibility in mind enabling us to be the first mover to use ammonia as the main fuel as soon as it is available for deep sea operations. The Auroras represent the future of our business and that of our industry.” “We want to be the preferred green partner in deep sea shipping. We are constantly looking for new ways to reduce both our own and our customers’ carbon footprint and this is yet another concrete and decisive step. We are committed to building a more sustainable maritime industry in close collaboration with our partners and customers,” says Höegh Autoliners’ CEO Andreas Enger. “We are looking very much forward to the delivery of the first two Aurora Class vessels in the second half of 2024. And the expected delivery of two more Auroras every six months through to first half of 2026, eight in total. We retain options for another eight Auroras - all of which will be built by China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. (CMHI),” said the company release.
